Title: Videos: Peregrine Falcons
Post by: Vortimaxx on June 03, 2008, 17:27
I looked for a good spot to post this and found no "General" or "About Falcons" section. I saw these clips about Peregrine Falcons and just had to share them. They could be in Manitoba. ::)

Don't know about "in Manitoba"  ;) but they sure are great videos!

Here's another one:  Ultimate Killers: Peregrine Falcon Sky Dive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnT2joxnkqY)  (BBC Video on YouTube)

Guess or no guess, great shots of a stoop.  They don't always hunt by stooping, just the most impressive!  What I liked was all the guys on the balloon all getting ready for theis great event and even with the hood off, the bird is the only one totally non-plussed by where it is and what's going to happen.  And have no doubt, that bird knows its going to be flying and catching something as soon as that hood comes off!

The PBS program Nature put together a very good series on peregrines (actually raptors) including several videos of Peregrines.  Have a look here!

Raptor Force

I found this while checking my messages on deviantART, someone I watch posted about this:
"The PBS show "Nature" shows us what happens when you strap a video camera on the back of a Peregrine Falcon. One of the most amazing videos showing how these Raptors hunt, incredible footage."

Amazing video taken by tiny spy cameras strapped to the fastest bird on the planet, the Peregrine Falcon, and the best handling, the Gos Hawk.

Thank you. Beautiful, especially the PF hanging on the wind. We see so much nest box action that it is really cool to see them nesting in the wild; and how wonderful to see something so beautiful from Japan while we ponder the tragedy that is unfolding there.

Video:  The Original Duck Hunters
Run time: 14 minutes, 12 seconds

CAUTION - Ducks die in this video - it's quick and efficient but they do die and a couple die close to the camera/cameraman.  It's not gory, it's just nature being nature.  If you aren't sure you can watch it, wait and see what others say and then make a decision.

http://youtu.be/G-FZdIrKyBk

This video isn't of peregrines but rather prairie falcons and gyrfalcons hunting mallards in the fields near Calgary.  I decided to try it out here first so that folks wanting to see peregrine videos didn't miss the opportunity to see this, it's an amazing video and peregrines would hunt exactly the same way had they been there to be filmed.

It was a little bit shocking since I don't care to see anything hurt or in pain, but you are right it's nature being nature. Thanks for sharing.

I don't think that this is a Peregrine as it is nesting in a tree but what a neat story. It's unbelievable how fast these birds dive bomb this guy. I guess they don't like his hat! Thanks for posting this.

Last year, my son had a similar situation delivering mail in River Heights. He said the bird looked like a falcon, but flew up into a tree. The photo he sent me was forwarded to TPC and she thought it most likely was a merlin. It did look like a falcon. My son has a knack for attracting birds. This year, delivering mail in St James, he was dive bombed by a crow. ;D ;D

Falcon attacks mailman

The bird in Texas could have been a merlin but since they don't make nests of their own they would have needed to use another bird's nest.  Might also have been a Coopers Hawk - they build their own nests in similar kinds of habitat, have a similar profile with falcons, are bigger than Merlins but more streamlined than peregrines.  None of the photos showed the profile well enough nor the markings well enough to be sure.  I think both Merlins and Coopers Hawks go that far south, but I don't know about nesting ... going to have to do some investigating I think ...

Wow, to see the bird diving at such incredible speeds, is amazing.

It gave me a glimpse into the world of our peregrines when they are off camera.

Thanks.

It *is* very interesting. I noticed that the dog does not get too close to the falcon's beak. S/he probably learned that lesson the hard way!

Snowy Owl vs Peregrine Falcon

No one gets hurt and the owl is smart, s/he keeps his/her eyes on both birds so s/he doesn't get caught by sneak attack ... great video, wonderful watching the snowy up close and the peregrines are just annoying him in the hopes s/he'll leave ...

Apparently the Weather Network (www.theweathernetwork.com) will shortly have a peregrine video from Edmonton on their website online.  I check and couldn't see anything yet but something to look for if you are visiting TWN.

HAPPY WORLD WETLANDS DAY 2017!!

As you all have heard me say in year's gone by, wetlands and peregrines go together like PB & J.  In Canada, more than 600 species of plants and animals make wetlands their home - more than a few of those are favourite menu items for the peregrines.  No wetlands = a lot fewer peregrines, particularly here in Manitoba!

Speaking of food ( ;D ) here for your viewing pleasure are a couple of peregrines hunting shorebirds at a wetland in Washington State - https://youtu.be/y_G_K5TU8cQ

Be impressed, these birds fly very fast so being able to keep them in-frame is fantastic, keeping them in-frame and in-focus is amazing!

Enjoy.

Wednesday, Nov 21 @ 8pm CST

See the world through the eyes of nature’s fastest animal: the peregrine falcon. Though once perilously endangered in the U.S., this spectacular predator is now thriving again in American cities and on every continent but Antarctica. What is the secret to its predatory prowess? To find out, follow a young family of peregrines in urban Chicago as the chicks hatch and learn from their parents to fly and hunt. And join expert falconer Lloyd Buck as he trains a captive peregrine and puts its hunting skills to the test. What’s the secret behind the peregrine falcon’s blistering speed, able to reach nearly 200 mph?
