Dennis & I were roaming in West Winnipeg today, but all was quiet in all the peregrine haunts out that way. The air was clear and sunny so had they been around we would have had wonderful photos! Well, maybe soon ....

First kid home looks to be Jules (one band, didn't look coloured, right leg). Spotted at 1145 hrs today on the Diner and I was back with a scope and camera within 10 minutes and Dennis arrived with his camera not long after when work happened to be in the area and he had a few minutes before his next client. Light was flat, we were looking into the sun so no fantastic shots, just enough to start narrowing down the field. Bird flew off to the nestsite (almost lost sight of it as a result) and then back again echupping for his/her mate. Sat quietly, head swivelling for the next couple of hours before settling down for "the long wait". We'll be back out from time to time to keep an eye on who and when and where.

Went for a little drive today, and there she was, sitting very prettily on one of her favourite spots. Got some pictures, but they need some cropping, and Dennis' shots are way better than mine.

Dennis has been watching Jules in the West Winnipeg territory, she's still by herself but very attached to the location so hopefully her mate will be back soon and she can hopefully be more successful this year.
Just a note on this location, we are going to install a second nestbox on a building in this territory in the hopes that this pair will move from the spot they tried last year. Don't have any schedule on that but we will keep you in the loop. However, we will not be providing location information unless they move to the new location ... so keep your fingers crossed!

No sign or sound of Jules today in West Winnipeg but that's not too unusual at this time of the year. She's here by herself for the moment so she might be taking advantage of the amazing weather - sunny, warm and very little wind - to find herself some more interesting (more interesting than pigeon) food a wee bit further way. We went by all their favourite West Winnipeg haunts twice (at different times) but no sign of her. I should mention that it does look like she has visited the nestbox installed a couple of years ago in the area ... hopefully this is a good sign ...

Ivy's home but he's not where he's suppose to be ... he's annoying his mother downtown ...
If Princess accepts him, Jules will hopefully find another mate this year - there are usually birds flying through/by so not an impossibility.
If Princess doesn't accept him and manages to hold her territory until Trey or another male turns up, then Ivy would probably end up back out west with Jules.
If Ivy and Jules decide they want the downtown territory, they will have to force Princess out and hope Trey doesn't return.
Such a peaceful time is Spring ...

Oh, do like him, he's survived all these years, is on mate number 3 and he's still returning to the city ... we do need young boys to come home otherwise there is the real possibility that we will lose our family line. We have never had a Manitoba female at the Raidsson, Jules is from we don't know where. Hurricane and Phoebe are the only Manitoba hatched females to return in the province and be successful nesting. Our boys are few and far between - there are no Manitoba males, other than the ones here in Manitoba, that we know about ... so do like him, he's in a rare and select company!

I agree TPC, most sites have falcons they never knew growing up so it's kind of exciting and unique that this one has stayed in the family so far. Just another way of looking at it :-*

Spoke with Dennis a bit earlier and he was passing by the West Winnipeg site and no sign of Jules. I didn't see her either this morning or yesterday morning on my way to work. Could be that she is taking a little extra time to go hunting during the day or going further afield to hunt as she doesn't have a "man" waiting for her back on territory.
Do I think she is leaving? No. Just that she's off somewhere hunting or whatever. Without a male she's not in find a nest, lay some eggs mode, but its still her territory and she's been there for two years, so no reason to immediately assume that because Ivy has been downtown for a week that she will be looking for greener pastures already ....

Hey Ya'll........I think it's about time we get Back on Topic.
Just wanted to thank Dennis, TPC and BccS for your eyes and updates (aka air quality checks ) about our birdies.
It is so wonderful to have onsite updates of what is happening in the "now".
We all wish that it would have been different, but it is what it is. We must take joy and delight in what we have, and not dwell on what we wanted to have.
Are we not lucky that Princess has accepted Ivy and that chicks are coming?!
Are we not lucky that it appears that Jules may have found a mate?!
So, instead of mourning for Trey (which we shouldn't be), we should be taking joy in that fact that nature prevails, and that Trey and Princess' son, Ivy, is continuing the bloodline.
Let's all enjoy these moments, and move forward.

1100 hrs today - no one at the favoured perches in the West Winnipeg territory, but it is a beautiful day for hunting, warm not much wind (for a peregrine) and things are moving around so there's plenty of variety!!
Note, the forecast calls for increasing wind this afternoon, gusts up to 50 km/h but at least the chance of rain seems to have disappeared!!

Yesterday while Dennis and I were "snooping" on the birds, we discovered a rather unusual visitor in the West Winnipeg territory. It was/is a young peregrine near to the Bed & Breakfast. The bird was hanging out and while Dennis was able to get some photos we can't say if it had bands or anything like that, it wasn't quite that cooperative. What we can say is that it looks like a juvenile male peregrine falcon. I use the term juvenile specifically because the bird looks just like our chicks at fledge age. At this time of the year, I would expect to see a bird with adult or adult with some juvenile features, but this bird was brown and gold, no white, no black, no slate grey. Not something I've seen before. Anywho, going to farm the question out to those who know more about it than I and will let you know what I hear ...

Based on plumage, bird is no way near breeding age. The light was very good, he was on the top of a building, we could see with binoculars and Dennis' amazing telephoto lens. The breast pattern was strong vertical stripes, colour was brown and gold, no white whatsoever! As for the photos, Dennis has them, will see if he is going to post or if I will ...

Really really looks just like a peregrine. Too broad a malar stripe for a prairie, too big for a merlin or American Kestrel, too small for a gyrfalcon. Not a coopers or sharp-shinned unless I was having eye-strain ... will be posing it to the birding community here just to see what they say though. Again, will let you know what I hear ...

In parrots its all in the lighting controls. If they think its spring due to controlled lighting and exposure, they'll go into breeding mode..

Well, I work on Portage and figure that, between the various photos and the posts in this topic, I could probably figure out where the site is. Decided, though, that, if TPC thinks it's better to keep it a secret, I'm okay with that! Obviously there are enough people who know where it is and are checking on the birds regularly -- they don't need me there, too!

The Diner is the name we have given to the building where the birds like to eat ... and no, there is no restaurant in it or any of the buildings surrounding it :)
The Bed & Breakfast is where we would like the birds to nest (they haven't so far).
The Bleachers is where the birds like to watch the world from ... and launch attacks at unsuspecting pigeons et al, a bit like the Roman Colliseum!!

Camera as in webcam that the world can watch or camera as in webcam that I can watch? :D We will probably try to install a camera for security on the nestbox but it is unlikely that it would go live to the internet. Keep in mind that webcams are brutally expensive. We are very very fortunately to have CBC Manitoba and Shaw as our partners on the Falcon Cam, we couldn't do any of it without them!

Yes, I was watching a video on the CBC-B.C. website regarding this. Webcams are ENORMOUSLY expensive to set up and maintain, etc. :o We are very fortunate to have CBC Manitoba and Shaw supporting this endeavour! :-*

Well, just as soon as the webcam is up and running on the Radisson and the Kinderchicklets have had a chance to view the peregrines and ask TPC a few questions, I have plans to put out a fundraising "challenge" again! ;)

To be honest, TPC, I confess to being very ill-informed about webcams in general and their costs in particular. Until your comment (and, of course, Bccs's on another thread), I didn't realize that the costs were prohibitive. So, given that information, I'll take back my question. A camera for security would be great -- and, of course, you could post the interesting photos! Forgive me for getting carried away with the enthusiasm of watching "our" birds and not thinking about the real life (i.e. $$$) difficulties. And thanks for bringing me down to earth so gently!

Jules had a gentleman (based on size) caller last night and he was still around this morning. And no, it is most definitely not Ivy!! She's still stuck on the old nestsite, but I'm not sure how keen he is, he didn't seem to want to visit there. Smart bird. They were back on the Diner talking, so looks like courting at the least. They took a fly around the whole area, then headed south and didn't come back ... I left after 1.5-2.0 hours ...

She's still stuck on the old nestsite, but I'm not sure how keen he is, he didn't seem to want to visit there. Smart bird. They were back on the Diner talking, so looks like courting at the least. They took a fly around the whole area, then headed south and didn't come back ... I left after 1.5-2.0 hours ...
Good news that Jules has herself a suitor and a smart one at that. We can only hope he can convince her but you know we women have a mind of our own. ::) 1.5 to 2.0 hours....WOW TPC, now that's patience! :)

That is certainly the first consideration and the only one the peregrines really are interested in helping with. Other consideration from the Project's perspective is that the site is secure, that a box can be installed that will be safe for the building's occupants as well as anyone below on the sidewalk/street/parking lot, that we can maintain/repair the nestbox without an inordinate amount of work, that the birds will be able to go about their normal activities without harm in the new location (not being disturbed/stressed) and that the building managment and occupants are willing to try to live with an endangered species on their roof.
What exactly makes a box have "Nest Appeal"? ???
If I knew, we'd be up to our knees in appealing nests and peregrines!! Mostly its just a feel which for me I suspect is as a result of so many years of looking at what is appealing about nestsites!
We'll have to see how appealing the new "condo" is ... Jules may be a hard nut to crack when it comes to getting her off her "old" nestsite!

We will be doing a "chick-check" for eggs tomorrow ... the pair have reappeared after almost of week of virtually no sightings. Now he is tempting Jules with food offerings ... methinks he has definite opinions about where he wants to nest ...

New boy and Jules have been hanging out alot at the Bed & Breakfast over the last couple of days and they have put a very deep scrape in the nestbox that is there. No egg(s) yet, so could still choose the Diner's condo. We will just have to wait and see. I have a photo, but am on the job today so it will have to be posted later. And no, from the photo you can't tell where the box is located ;)
We don't have an ID yet, but we do know that his band has a sideways 8 on it. We'll get it yet ... maybe soon since they seem to be back from their wandering and he might sit still long enough for us to get a good look at him! But he is a very pretty bird, nice dark full black cap - more even than Ivy's.

Don't take this as gospel, but from their behaviour today (I was visiting with them for hours today), they seem to like the B&B nestbox alot. Or at least today they did. Yesterday they were having a hissy fit over at the Bleachers and I thought they were going to consider nesting there!! I'll have to see where they hang out tomorrow ... but I do think that they should start egg-laying this week. I checked the B&B box today and nothing there yet.
I know, not the yes or no you were looking for, but enough to keep you all guessing!

I'm sorry, forgot to post that Jules and her boyfriend were reveling in the winds this afternoon. They were happily talking to one another on the B&B and soaring overhead on the winds. Watching them was a great way to spend a couple of hours.
And yes, they are currently in the middle of "baby-making" as a very young fan of the peregrines' insists is the correct terminology for this activity. :D So after the foul weather we are to about to enjoy has past, I will hopefully find one or more eggs in one of our two nestboxes!!

Red band means captive-bred and released either by a project like ours or by a breeder. Jules on the other hand could be either - won't know until (if ever) we get a real identification on her.

Dennis passed throught the West Winnipeg territory this morning and left me a message ... only one bird visible (him he thinks) so she could very well be in the box, she's been sitting in it alot over the last few days. Don't suspect there will be much of anything but the essentials today. Cool and damp. Real rain is forecast for late tomorrow and Saturday (35-45 mm).

I'm still not clear on what "captive bred" means and the difference between that and having been in captivity? :-\ Does that mean they were owned by someone, like, say, a Falconer? ??? And I have also read about "hacked bred" on other threads... What exactly does that mean? ???

the vast majority of all the anatum peregrines are the offspring of peregrine falcons in breeding programs in Canada and the USA. We were down to single digit breeding pairs south of the about 50 degrees North as I recall. So breeding programs were set up - the Wainwright facility in Alberta was probably the most productive over the years, but there were a couple of others, one at the Saskatoon Vet College and the other at the Raptor Centre at McGill University (both of these programs had different names but in 30 years, they've changed so I've omitted them here). About the time the species was downlisted federally, the Wainwright breeding facility closed and I believe both McGill's and Saskatoon's operations are much smaller now. There are some private breeders now that provide them to projects like ours (remember the foster chicks in 2008?) and/or release them into the wild themselves. Since breeding peregrines uses alot of falconry techniques, lots (if not most) breeders are falconers as well.
So captive-bred means, bred in captivity either for falconry purposes or for release into projects like ours.
There is no such thing as "hack-bred" but rather "hack-released". Hacking is a technique recovery projects like ours has used to release fledge age birds into an area. All of our early releases were hack releases of captive-bred birds. Hacking involves putting fledge age birds in a kind of peregrine jail for a week so that they become imprinted on the location. Food is provided by unseen humans while in "jail" and then one day, the bars are removed and the young birds fledge just like wild chicks. Because they are imprinted on the location, they return there for food. The trick with this is to not let the birds imprint on the humans feeding them. So food delivery is done when the birds can't see you. For example, birds hacked from the roof of a building like we have downtown, can't learn that opening the roof door means that someone will come out with food. In fact, the birds can't see humans delivering food at any time, that way humans remain a threat and are to be treated as targets.

They were at a falcon breeding facility in Saudi Arabia and they were artificially inseminating the falcons. It was so weird, they had this huge tray - kind of like those large grey egg trays you sometimes see at farmers markets - and all the eggs had numbers written on them. It looked a bit like a falcon farm .... I wish I had seen the entire segment but I must say it struck me as strange to see them breeding them like that for sale to falconers. Which is what they said they were doing. I just always thought they bred them in pairs but I guess times have changed and they do AI now. Seems like a large market there for purchasing falcons.

Artificial insemination has/is used in our programs as well, I think when a bird has imprinted on humans ... The breeders use a hat to collect the semen - looks a bit like a cross between a tilley hat and one of those baby bibs with a trough at the bottom.

TPC worked day & night, feeding, transporting, watching, she put the 3 chicks in the nestbox & babysat them there. - There are some great photos and the whole fascinating story in the Peregrine Chick Blog, you must read it!!! ;D.... (Check out the 2008 Blog 'The Parent Trap - Days 1-8) Unfortunately, P&T said 'Thanks but No Thanks' and the chicks had to go back. :-\ The Phanatics found out via the Blog story after it was all over, it was a top secret project! 8)

Yes! We have the band colour and one of the digits but the other one is giving us trouble. We have some photos, but the top digit is frequently hidden under his leg feathers so we haven't been able to confirm it yet. And yes, if he does have a name, we may well change it or hypenate it as they do out east.

Since he was likely to be a father this year, and doesn't seem to like the location of last year's nestsite (he's been encouraging Jules towards the nestboxes), we thought he needed a more dignified name ... :D

Well now, I was out and about this morning and as I was walking to my car I heard a very familiar sound. ;D Then I heard 2 very familiar sounds. ;D ;D
Jules and Beau, circling over my head, yakking up a storm, playing, riding thermals, chasing each other, in slow lazy circles. I went to a better vantage point and there they were, no more than 100 feet above me. Wow oh wow. Spent 20 wonderful minutes just watching and smiling.
The B&B is a wonderful site, lucky, lucky, me.

Spent a couple of hours this morning trying to read Beau's band number ... he was cooperating but the wind made it difficult to keep the scope steady AND see through his fluttering feathers at the same time!!

Could very well have been, its part of their territory and Unicity is close to the river where they like to hunt. Could also have been a bird passing through on their way further north - the tundra birds are moving now .

Went for a little ride after work and found Jules at the B&B. She was having a grand old preen, not a care in the world. Didn't see the boy however.

They haved decided to nest on the B&B in the older of the two nestboxes in their territory. And when I say older, I mean that this building has had a box of one type or another on it for most of the last 20 years. A couple of years ago, the newest incarnation of the box was installed when it became apparent that we had a pair - at the time Ivy and Lucy - using the West Winnipeg site. We thought that the new box and new design might appeal to them more than the older design. Ivy and Jules visited it last year but opted not to nest there. This year, Beau took a shine to the location pretty early in their relationship and despite Jules' repeated requests for last year's site.
As for the street address, we are keeping that confidential again this year. If we can get them to nest successfully here perhaps in the future we can "spill the beans" but for the moment, we are giving them their space in the hopes that it will increase their odds for success.

Yes, I do understand about the need for their nesting location to be kept confidential, TPC. I was really just curious as to whether they chose the older nestbox or the new "upscale" condo, that's all. ;)

The males make a number of scrapes but yes, the female chooses. But the male influences her decision. Beau did not like her choice, she'd keep returning to last year's spot and he wouldn't join her often. A few times, the building is very peregrine friendly for roosting but he didn't like the site for nesting and he kept leaving her. She'd cry then follow after him - at first right away, then she was more stubborn, then she followed him more often again. They are much calmer where they are now that's for sure, its much less noisy/busy.

There's a bit of wind but not much - it seems to be from the west and they have a full wall on that side of their box - and the roof is broadest there. All in all, they look like they are not having many/if any problems at all from the wind today ...

As far as we know...they are still incubating!

Jules and Beau are fine, still incubating 4 eggs and looking to have gotten the hang of it very well. During the foul weather this morning, Jules was velcroed to the nest and didn't move at all from the time came up until the sun came out at 10-11 am.

Had a quick peak at Beau or Jules on the eggs, couldn't tell as there was some rain on the camera lens. It will dry very soon (its getting warmer here as we speak) and I'll check again. But it looks like yesterday morning ... wet adult peregrine velcroed to 4 eggs in West Winnipeg. Which is an excellent thing!

We lost cam 2 a few days ago but couldn't repair/replace it because of the foul weather. Can't access the IP address right now, so can't tell you want is happening there specifically. Having said that, was by their nestsite about 10 minutes before the rain began and there was a shift change, Beau out, Jules in. She might have known what was coming and decided to cut short her "break". She's a very quiet bird unless she's defending her nest and she came in yelling at him and when he didn't get out fast enough, she aborted her landing, yelled again then dropped right into the box. Going to love seeing that on the recorder so long as our current cam problem is just my access as opposed to my access AND the connection between the camera and the recorder.
I did watch her on video during yesterday's morning rainfall and this morning's and she was velcroed to the eggs not moving a muscle for hours. She'll be wet but I think that will be the extent of it. And she's not entirely in the open, not as far under cover as Princess and Ivy have been the last couple of days, but still not entirely in the open either.
And for those wondering, no I will not be going up to check on her or her eggs until after the weather passes. The last thing she needs is to feel the need to defend her nest in this weather. Too dangerous with the winds for her and probably not something the eggs need either at this stage of incubation. So we will wait until the weather improves to check and repair/replace the camera. We will keep trying to access the camera remotely. They will probably be fine, they have made it this far, they will probably be okay until this weather passes.

Sitting so safe, warm and dry in the house while I listen to the rain pour down, seems to make the plight of these birds, especially Jules and Beau, dreadful.
I know they do this on cliff tops every year but these are «our» birds and I feel more involved.
Your reassurance goes a long way to making things better, even though we know that nature will have the last word.

I just realized that I haven't been checking in on the Wpg.west falcons during this bad weather. Guess I feel as though eggs get through this kind of weather better than chicks, as long as parents are attentive and vigilant and Jules and Beau seem to be. Thinking about you guys!

No behaviour to view I'm afraid Ibis, the weather was just too foul for birds or humans. One bird was tucked down on the eggs, other bird was tucked up under cover. Quick breaks to find food when it wasn't raining and then back to the box or cover.

We did replace the cameras this morning and had a look at the eggs and the box. Box is fine, not problems with the storm, but then the box has been up for more than a couple of years and its survived a couple Winnipeg winters! We have three eggs here now, no sign of eggshells or anything else, so this is the point when non-viable eggs "disappeared" from the Radisson and Brandon nests, so probably the case here too. Jules and Beau were very vocal and very protective, very nice to see!
We expect the eggs to hatch in the next 10-14 days at last count ....

They are a new pair, so suspect it will be around the 14th ... a little earlier I don't think, a little after more probable as I'm not sure when they started hard incubation ...

Just as well they aren't ready to hatch yet, they don't have complete shelter so it's better to wait til all this ridiculous WEATHER is over and done with!!! ::)

Their roof is a different shape, triangular rather than rectangular, but its pretty close to being the same footprint as the Radisson. Jules and Beau however have not really moved their eggs any since they laid them in the middle of the nestbox. When they hatch I'm sure they will figure out that in the back left corner is the best place to keep the kids corralled.

Last check of the nest via cam, everyone looked fine - fluffed a bit because of the wind, but she, Jules, was tucked up and napping. A big THANK YOU to Larry, our feed to the cameras on the Jules & Beau has been restored and all looks good, she's tucked down on the eggs mostly out of the wind and mostly out of any rain that is slated to fall today. Think these two have figured out the whole eggs-need-to-stay-under-during-incubation thing!
Just a note for those of you keeping track, looks like these eggs will be hatching about the time we are banding the Radisson chicks ... won't know for sure until they actually hatch, but looks to be around that time ...

First hatch this morning about 0915 hrs this morning ... Jules is playing sunshade at the moment. As of 1130 hrs there had been no additional hatches. The other two eggs look fine and are still being incubated.
Will snag some images when the adults give me an opportunity, its very bright in the box in the mornings so may need to wait until mid-day to get some with decent contrast. Since we will be on our way to the banding at the Radisson, don't expect to see any images until this evening at the earliest. Will post a couple here as well as links to the photo and video galleries when they are available.

Only two chicks hatched as of dark tonight. Took them a bit of time for a first meal but the chicks had three by the end of the day. Took a bit of time for the adults to get the hang of feeding their chicks too - they lack skill but the chicks made up for the lack by being very hungry and understood the "big thing" had the food. Will be interesting to see how they do tomorrow ... or rather later this morning :o

Half the box has a roof but she's not making best use of it. Gravel in the box drains as fast as it rains so no worries there. As a result, Jules is wet and fluffed up by the wind but she's fine. Its obvious she still new at this game, she moved more into the open yesterday but with the good weather that was fine, now she's damp and velcroed on her chicks. so they all seem fine.
And as of 1153, chick number three just broke his/her shell and she is in the process of stuffing the little darlings well under her.

How did this "lack of skill" show?
The whole tab A in slot B process. Neither is particularly confident feeding the chicks - its a bit of an art form that one learns with experience. The chicks barely have enough strength to keep themselves upright - that's why they lean on each other and any unhatched eggs for the first couple of days - so being able to put food in a very small, moving target takes some practice. They have been fed twice already this morning - nothing for the last couple of hours because of the rain but that is the standard response to lousy weather and young chicks.

TPC, great description of how it goes with feeding very new chicks by first time parents.

1410 hrs - Jules just stepped out fo the nestbox for a moment and in came Beau to watch over the chicks. Poor guy, he was really bewildered about what he should be doing ... would she be gone long enough that he would need to brood them, what the heck are these round things blowing about the box, why are the white things wiggling ... at which point Jules came back, check the tots out (not like they could really get up to anything in her absence) and now she is stuffing them under her again. Its dry at the moment but the wind is up and she gets fluffed and buffetted abit when she's standing. When she tucks down on the chicks s/he are more protected from the wind because the box itself is recessed a bit.
1411 hrs - Jules is off again, chicks are in a wee pile out of the wind. Usually means she is off to get some food, hopefully she will be back in a minute or two ... so long as it isn't raining, they will be fine for a few minutes ...
1412 hrs - Beau is back and just as confused though he is getting stuck in there now ...
1413 hrs - Jules is back, Beau is off. Jules is attempting to stuff again ... if she could just get the little darlings more toward the middle of the box it would be so much easier for her to get comfy ...

Chicks are too small to feel the wind, it passes right over their little heads. She's getting better, at the feeding thing, so too are the chicks getting the hang of it. Helps when there are three of them, its like a little chick-tripod, even when one is asleep it works!

Do new parents generally get things figured out fairly quickly? Is there ever a case where one remains totally at sea the whole time? I vaguely remember someone mentioning a bird that wasn't too bright. Beau did push for the nest site, so maybe he's not al that bad.

Oh Beau is far from bad :D he moved Jules and he's very attentive and seems to be a good provider, but like many new dads, he's a little intimidated by the white wiggly things. Ivy was a little freaked too as I recall. The females usually stick close to the chicks immediately after hatching but he will get his chance, have no worries. Would rather have Jules velcroed to the chicks in this bad weather than a new dad who is inexperienced with slot A into tab B.

0925 hrs (local) - blowing like crazy around the nestbox - this roof is windy on gentle breeze days so its been blowing some all night. The box is recessed some (think Tuppernest from last year at the Radisson) so unless the adults put their tails up at the box's edge, they are able to tuckdown and out of the wind. They haven't moved the chicks back further undercover but the babes are still very young and the adults are equally new at this game. But they are velcroed to the little darlings and all is going very very well at the moment. They have fed the chicks once for sure this morning and the most recent shift change was very slick (am downloading video of it and will put on the gallery in the next hour).
Beau and Jules may be getting wet but they have managed to hatch out three chicks and so far so good. Another 24 hours and they will have at least a few days of much better weather - even Monday with 60% chance of rain is better than today's wet & wind. Upside ... rain and wind gusts are forecasted to taper off this afternoon.
Will also see about capturing a few still shots and posting them here on the thread ...

This is great news to hear, TPC -- I've been thinking of Beau and Jules and their little ones. Knowing that both are new to parenting, it's especially good to hear that they've been managing to keep the chicks fed and covered.

It's definitely a learned skill - her first feedings were not nearly so confident or efficient. They both seem to catching on quick, which is a good thing!

Got the first glimpse of the WW beauties today. You do such a good job Tracy. I hope the rain will stop soon and not rains for weeks.

1419 hrs (local) - watching Jules as she's sleeping on the chicks. The rain drips off the roof of the nestbox and drips onto the back of her neck and wakes her up. Insult to injury. She is half-inside, half-outside right now but I think perhaps they have managed to move the chicks about 1-6 inches more "inside". If the forecast for tomorrow is correct, both Jules and Beau should be able to bake in the sun on the edge of the nestbox while their chicks get to lie uncovered in the sun - what a change in 24 hours!

1545 hrs (local) - whomever was brooding (Jules I think) suddenly leapt off the chicks and tossed the chicks into a little line across the box. In came a totally soaked Beau who kept an eye on the little ones until Jules returned with food. Now, these guys are really too small to move easily and can barely see (their eyes are closed when they first hatch) so Jules started feeding the middle chick and the two outside chicks had to work their way into the middle in order to get some food. At the moment everyone is back together and Jules is feeding everyone nicely. And I think they have even moved another couple of inches further under cover.

1853 hrs (local) - its mealtime again and the chicks look good, dry and fluffy. Jules looks like a wet cat but she's enthusiastically stuffing food into their little mouths. One thing she hasn't learned to do is to exit carefully when she's going to retrieve food for the chicks - she tossed one of the chicks again and he is missing out on some of his dinner ... but there is still lots to go it looks like and they got fed a couple of hours ago so he/she should be okay until the last meal for the day in a couple more hours! Tomorrow will hopefully be easier on them all!
1856 hrs (local) - chicks one and two and fallen into a post-dinner stupor and chick three is getting some chow - s/he's also improving his/her "scooting" technique and has made his/her way back to the two-chick-pile. Looks like these chicks have good survival skills, they are following the food and sticking together!!

1220 hrs (local) - they were fed about an hour ago and are now sprawled out uncovered in the nestbox shade. Jules was acting as their umbrella up to a minute or two ago so now I have a full vew of the little chicks in a pile half in the sun/half in the shade. They are getting more active now and have able to move themselves onto or off-of each other depending on if the sun is out or not. There are some big cumulous clouds showing in the edge of the cam image but they look more white than dark and there is still lots of blue sky.
Last weather report from Environment Canada says no rain today but chance of rain (30%) and perhaps thunderstorms tomorrow night (not sure of the pop). Tuesday looks to be rainy but back to sun Wednesday and Thursday. Think Jules and Beau have the "keep the kids dry" concept worked out so don't really have much concern about that anymore.

Jules and Beau and the kids are doing fine - she's moved them all a bit more under cover but not fully so she is still getting very wet when it rains. The chicks are fine by all appearances, eating lots and being kept dry and warm. At this point we are half way through the very vulnerable first 10 days - after 10 days the chicks can thermoregulate on their own and are therefore much less in danger from the kinds of rains we've been having - they will also be more mobile and should walk themselves out of the rain which means Mom will go with them which she'll figure out keeps her drier too!

I tend to count from the oldest chick except when it comes to banding dates when I use the age of the youngest chick because we really need to make sure the chicks are old enough to be banded.
So, the West Winnipeg chicks are on Day Eight - oldest two chicks are eight days, third is seven days old.
They can thermoregulate at 10+ days so the rain will not be as big a danger. At 10 days they can move on their own, tend to move into the shade/under cover when the weather changes - and the West Winnipeg site has a roof they can get under to avoid both rain, sun and winds from most directions.

Banding is between day 21 and day 25 ideally. We have a tentative date for banding, will have it confirmed on Monday as that is when all the players will be in one place. Will let y'all know when its confirmed.

1800 hrs (local) - the chicks have been tucked up in a pile at the back of the box with Jules or Beau sitting on the ledge beside them. A couple of minutes ago the chicks all sat up and reassembled their pile and the adult (I can only see their back at the moment) popped down into the between them and the outside. Now the bird is channelling Trey and cleaning up the nestbox - I think perhaps it is Beau now that I can see the bird next to the chicks ... anyway back to the story, adult jumped down into the box at about the time that I heard the first roll of thunder in my neighbourhood ....

It has suddenly gone very dark in West Winnipeg ... and no, the camera is still working just that the light is going very fast ... and Jules (this time) is trying to get the kids corralled in case she needs to plunk down on them. They are tucked up in the back corner under the roof so more protection this time than for all the earlier storms!

The chicks are snoozing all in a row in the sunlight (yes there is sun in western Winnipeg right now) and look fat and happy. Starting to see little bits of brown feathers through the white ... the babies are growing up :'(

Just to let you know that the West Winnipeg chicks are real "Artists"...they have now decorated the two side of the box as well the ledge on both sides with their famous "Peregrine Poop Art"...will have to take photos of this display for sure...lol

So far Dennis has amazing images from the Radisson banding, the Brandon banding and Loki's fledge adventure, so I can't imagine his West Winnipeg banding images being anything less than stellar!!

Dennis is working late today so probably no photos for awhile I'm afraid, though I do have one or two that will turn up on the blog tomorrow. As for the video, Eye-Spy is going to put it on a disk for me along with the Radisson banding and I will get it in as soon as I can.
Chicks were very quiet, the protested our banding them but they didn't scream at us as the Radisson chicks did. Not unusual, some nests are just quieter at banding age than others. Jules and Beau have done a nice job with them, they are all about the same size (yet another nest of them!) - 1 male, 2 females according to leg size. We have put coloured tape on the male and one of the females but on the left leg rather than the right leg in case the Radisson chicks are still around town when these little guys start to fly in 3 weeks.

One of the chicks (female I think) decided to see what was up on the ledge and took a short stroll...perhaps she thought it was a long ways down and soon returned back to the box. All three now settled down for the night...counting pigeons.

Cute chicks! Hope they fledge okay and won't need to be handled by anyone............may have more injuries! At this age they sure can capture your heart...........just have to remember that they are wild and will fly away!

The chicks were born June 16 and June 17, which puts them at 30 days old. Loki fledged at what, day 40...?
Does that mean fledging starts in about a week to week and a half... Is that right?

It appears that all three chicks can now get themselves out of the nest box and on to the ledge. They are starting to find and work their wings and the white feathers are being replaced with dark feathers.

I'm planning on switching my hours for fledgewatch, going to go to work later so that I'll be able to be there from about 5 to about 8. I just might even consider taking a half day holiday here and there. ;D
It's great having flex hours ( and I'm the boss, so I'm not saying no to my plan. )
And I do know where the location is, so I can position myself to cover a bunch of flyways.

I guess there is a big fear that hundreds of people with go in droves to the location and bother the residents.
Funny though .. everyone knows where the "Radisson Family" are and the Radisson isn't bothered by Hundreds of Falcon Watchers.

Demon # 1 wandered down the roofedge ledge and out of camera range last night just before sunset. Caught sight of him (I think its "him) just before it got too dark roaming around exploring on the roof proper. This morning, the girls followed his lead and the box has been empty and quiet all day. Occasional parent, but not for long.
Suspect we will see him/them again on camera just before they fledge ... him I suspect weekend, early next week as he'll be 40 days old on Monday. Girls should go on/before the August long weekend.

Oh ya, names - Nero, Annie & Aggie. Dennis will have photos of the bands/colours and names on his photo gallery this week - we'll post the link here ...
Nero - in honour of Bob Nero who started the project 30 years ago and who was responsible for the first releases in the provinces in 1981 coincidentally (or maybe not) from another building elsewhere in the West Winnipeg territory. Bob was also the reason I got involved in the project 20 years ago. The name is also in honour of the Bob's wife, Ruth, who passed away just recently - sometimes we forget that for everyone who works with peregrines as we do that there is usually someone at home making sure our lives don't go completely off the rails in our fixation with the birds!
Annie - in honour of this the Project's thirtieth anniversary
Aggie - the first releases in Winnipeg back in 1981 were from the old Agricultural College Campus

Safer in most ways, more difficult to fledgewatch however because of the surrounding environment - more space, lower buildings. There is still vehicle traffic, but it ain't the same as downtown!! More like Brandon is someways, safer than Brandon in others.

Middle of last week Nero jumped/flapped his way up 6-8 in. to the roof ledge...well done. A couple day's later his sisters figured out how to do the same thing. Over the week-end they enjoyed the ledge just in front of the nest box...well that wasn't good enough and a boy being a boy heads of on an adventure !
Now his sisters soon fallowed and today they spent time running around the roof top.
Nero returned a short time ago to the ledge...now he has made it up 20-24 in. from the roof to the ledge perhaps waiting for Mom or Dad to bring a meal...that a BOY !
The girls have been running around under the nest box/roof...wondering just how he got back up there ???

And now the little tot is napping in the nestbox - he's all by himself, lying on his belly. Every so often he plays with a feather, then goes back to snoozing. Methinks perhaps he didn't get much sleep all by himself last night.

number of young peregrines fledging in the province? or just those that hatched and fledged in the province? for the first eight years we didn't have any hatches, all releases of captive-bred birds. For the next 4-5 years we had a few hatches and continued with the releases. For about the last 15 we have had all hatches.

Nero was up and awake and perched looking out at the world on the edge of the nestledge (the inside ledge) by 0335 (oh dark thirty to quote one of our members ;)). One of the girls came toddled along the roof to the nestbox then called out for her brother and he scampered down the nestledge and out of sight of the camera.
Okay all three kids are back - they have all figured out how to get up onto the ledge and one of the girls has figured out how to jump up on the camera support and then onto the roof of the nestbox - smart girl. Haven't seen the colour of the tape yet, but will. One of the girls has spent a chunk of time napping in the nestbox, don't think she enjoyed the nighttime adventure as much as Nero and her sister, now she is back out and sitting on the ledge while Nero pokes around in the feathers for something to nibble on.
All in all, a happy little band back from their travels ...

1511 hrs (local) - all the kids are home and napping in/at the nestbox. Bit of a breeze but they seem to be figuring it out which is good since the site is most often windy

Kids are playing around and on the nestbox today. Wind is so light this morning that one of the little darlings managed to jump from the roof up onto the camera that looks directly down on the nestbox - hasn't moved the cam any (thanks for making sure it was on tight Eye-Spy) but I can see tail feathers in the top right corner of the image. One has decided to go run the ledges (not sure who though) and the other is just on the corner of the nestbox roof so I can see his/her shadow on the roof but only 1/3 of their body in the image.

First day of fledge watch here. Nothing much happening, very little flapping, but lots of walking along the edge. The kids would yak their heads off whenever an adult was in sight, "bring me food ". Saw a feeding, and heard the feeding, more yelling from the kids. ;D. Jules and Beau were around most of the time and he was doing a bit of yelling too.
Hanging out with Pam and Dennis, the best !!! They both took tons of pictures and I'm quite sure they'll be posting some soon.

1448 hrs (local) - two of the three kids are back in the nestbox keeping out of the rain. Came scooting back along the ledges, it was very cute. Not sure where the third one is hanging out, maybe under the box or its taking them a bit longer to come back along the "birdie high-way" ;)

2115 hrs (local) - all the kiddies have been back at the nestbox for the last 1/2 hour - sitting on the box roof and on the roof edges that surround the nestbox. During the rain both the girls were napping on their tummies in the back corner of the box out of the rain. They are very much still the three musketeers - one goes, they all go, one comes back, they all come back. And none of the stealing food and nibbling on toes and beaks that was so very much the norm this year at the Radisson. They are a very cute bunch.

Day two and Dennis and I were on watch again. Very little wingercising by the chicks.
6 am seems to be a feeding time. Saw the kids lurching along the ledge, it makes me laugh out loud to watch them walk. ;D
Beau finished feeding the kiddies and then ate the leftovers. They were yakking tons, but I heard the famous "chup, chup ' for the first time. What a difference in sound from the yakking. Softer and not harsh at all, almost a talking sound. Wonderful!!
We were just packing up and in flew Jules, it looked like she was bringing food, but she flew to the other side of the building and we lost sight of her.
Great way to start the day, thanks for the company Bob. ;D

We're getting rain, they are calling for t-storms and more rain this afternoon and this evening. Oh yeah and the humidex is 41C at the moment. Those kids are smart heading for cover when it rains!

The chicks won't be 40 days old until Monday, so a few more days until fledging would be the norm. And they can fledge at any time of the day, but overwhelmingly prefer first thing in the morning, not a bad thing as winds tend to be lighter (on average) earlier in the day.
And one of our kids is a real little homebody. When it rained early this evening, s/he ran straight back to the nestbox and tucked up under the roof until the worst of it passed. And s/he is back now, sitting on the north edge of the building watching the world roll by. A few minutes ago, she was lying down on her tummy napping in the back corner of the box again. Very cute and homey!

Five cameras meant I have been spending most of my spare time just downloading video and as you mentionned on the Edmonton site, it takes more time to upload video so downloading is my priority at the moment!! Hate the idea of losing a second of the chicks' progress!!

Just back online for the first time in a couple of very busy days, so here is the update that Bccs alluded to earlier ...
Saturday - Bccs & Gail were on the early shift and were joined by Eye-Spy. The first of the three chicks fledged before 9am, got grounded and the gang managed to corral her and get her into a box courtesy of Bccs who has been through this before this year. They called me and I went out to check if there were any reason the chicks shouldn't be returned to the nestbox, and after a look at the wings and her (it was Annie) ability to flap etc, back up she went to the roof. Dennis joined us and managed to get some cute photos of them running the edges, sure they will turn up in his gallery soon. We spent a couple more hours watching them run along the edges and yelling at their parents for food. We also answered lots of questions from locals in the area who know about the birds and wanted to know how they were doing. I had to leave earlier for another appointment but the gang hung out for a while after but no one else fledged.
Sunday - Bccs back on the early shift and joined once again by Gail, then Eye-Spy and then Little Bug. One of the females (we now know) had flown across to another nearby tall building just before Bccs arrived so the gang were able to watch female 1 (probably Annie) then female 2 (probably Aggie based on flight skills) shuttle back and forth between these two buildings, improving their skills with each flight. Nero took his flight sometime between 1030 and 1100 hrs I believe (the gang will have to correct me if that time is late) but didn't manage to maintain altitude like his sister and ended up on a ledge on the 7th floor near a window. Managed to encourage him to try flying again from the inside (weren't sure if he would get caught up in some window edge mechanisms) and off he flew to a much lower, but much more open building nearby. He hung out there for an hour or two, then took off to the west and we lost him. The difference with this location and downtown is that as you might imagine in the western part of the city (for those who know the city) it is alot more open, more lower buildings but also big, wide, open spaces, so young birds can go much longer distances very easily! We spent the next couple of hours combing nearby streets and buildings in ever widening circles. Eventually we had to acknowledge that he was out-of-sight for the moment and chances are, okay for the moment. So we all converged back on the building. Bccs and Dennis had had to finally leave due to other commitments, now Gail, Eye-Spy & Little Bug had to do the same and I decided to take one more swing near to the nestsite, and lo and behold, there was the little terror on the ground. So the gang reformed and tried to corner the little "darling" to put him back up on the roof. But he is fast on the ground as well as on the wing and he was having absolutely nothing to do with it, and he was off and flying (low but flying) and he wound up on yet another low building, but with a shady, hidden little corner and after a little bit of exploring he tucked himself down to nap in the shade and out of sight of anyone who didn't already know he was there. We watched him for a bit longer to be sure he wasn't going anywhere right away and then we decided that that was all we could do for the moment. It's very hot and humid out right now, Annie and Aggie are napping in the nestbox and I don't suspect that Nero is going anywhere for a few hours. I'll be back to check on him when it gets a bit cooler and quieter and we'll see how he's doing. At the moment, he's safe, out of the sun, we know he has no problem flying, just not good at it yet and he's close to home. Can't really ask for more.
Will post more observations after I go by tonight ...

I've been sitting in my air-conditioned office all day, checking and checking for news on the ww birds, telling myself over and over not to worry, that no news was probably good news. I can relate to the humidity, we've been sweltering in it for weeks on end here and I remember thinking a few days ago how hard it would have been to do a fledge watch through this heat.

Today sounded much more intense! Again, thank you to who was present to help out our falcons! I write it again, still am very surprised that the females went first, but things happen for a reason.

What an eventful weekend! With everybody fledging and two of the three causing some anxious moments, I'm sure all of you were ready for a good night's sleep at the end of Sunday. Glad to know that, despite a few minor hitches along the way, all three are doing well!

The wind is up significantly from the last week or more, and the West Winnipeg site is very affected by the winds. Two of the chicks are at the nestsite (though just out of view of the cameras :'() but Nero is off adventuring somewhere. Found him again last night just where I left him, but he wasn't around this morning. Hunted for him a few hours this morning but no luck. Now the temps are going up (its 32 with the humidex at 1100hrs CDT) and the winds increasing and getting gustier and the two chicks at the nestsite haven't moved all morning - they are tucked down low out of the wind. Heck even Jules & Beau weren't flying. So I've given up on the hunt for now, will go back out later in the day and try again. He was a smart cookie yesterday and found himself a quiet, sheltered, shaded spot, so I'm sure he'll do the same again today. He can fly, so who knows, next time I'm out he may have worked his way back and up to the nestsite like the Radisson chicks did.
Will keep an eye on the cams and keep you all in the loop.
And before everyone panics, Hurricane was the first of our chicks to fledge at the Radisson in 2007 and we didn't see her again after day 2. And she's the only one from that nest we've "seen" since.

Hate hot and humid weather when I'm looking for chicks - have to move slowly carrying bucket, blanket (thanks Gail) and there is just no way I can stop until I've exhausted all my options. So, eventually had to give up on my second search of the day after my meeting for work. Made it back to my 'puter and started trolling through the recorded video and almost exactly half-way between the end of my first search and the start of my second, I caught a bird in the nestbox eating "old" food like it hadn't eaten in weeks. Wondered if it could be Nero, then reined myself back and said a) they all eat like that these days, b) hadn't seen any of the chicks in the box at any other time of the day, c) Nero had been 25 stories lower last I saw him and d) usually don't get a clear look at either band when the chicks are in the box because they aren't there very long.
In the end, a) bird was very hungry, b) had a 1 in 3 chance of it being Nero, c) true, but one must always be optimistic, d) bird walked right up to the box cam and hopped up on the ledge showing me its black coloured band. And the answer is, Nero dropped into the nestbox for a late lunch of leftovers.

We have a viewer who is in the area around the West Winnipeg site frequently each day and she has started to send me updates which I have promised to post her. So here is our first post from the West Wpg Watcher:
Wow, sounds like I missed all the action over the weekend!! Thank goodness for the dedication, quick thinking and heat resistance of our dedicated fledgewatchers.
I was just at the site around 1:30pm and noticed two of the kids enjoying the view looking southwards. One of them was sitting just a foot or two away from the cam, chillen & enjoying life. The other had wandered all the way to the far end of the ledge. Happy wanderer was doing constant wing stretches - stretch, gengle flap gentle flap, tuck. Repeat.
I was at a bad angle so couldn't see leg bands but am confident that both were juveniles. No one flying around that I could see.

Here's a later report from WWW:
At around 2:30pm today I got to enjoy quite a little show at West Winnipeg. I just had my naked eye so couldn't identify anybirdie but enjoyed anyway. First I saw one juvenille enjoying the view towards the south. I also heard a lot of cacking so scanned the sky until I found what had to be another juvenille doing circles around the building. I could tell that this bird was a young one just based on the motions in flight - a little erratic and not nearly as smooth a flight as the adults. This little one appeared to be coming in for a landing but didn't have enough height to land on the roof. For a minute it looked like s/he was going to land on a lower level ledge but pulled away at the last minute. (thump went my heart!). S/he then did another circle at very low altitude (another heart-thump as I thought s/he was going to hit some trees!). It was very windy at the time and I could tell that the bird was having difficulty getting altitude. On the third pass we had success, little one landed right on the camera arm! The entire time there was non-stop yakking & squawking. At first it sounded a little like "hey, look at me, I can fly!!!" Then it sounded like "crap, how exactly do you get yourself back up that HIGH!!!!" Once landed, the complaining continued - sounded a little like "who knew flying would be so much fun, but such hard work!"

And hot it was Alli! For those of you not enjoying our weather, it was 30 with the humidex by about 8am this morning according to Environment Canada. And the wind, strong as it was, didn't seem to cool things down much!

Yes it sure was hot and humid today! Still is, even though it has rained a bit where I live here in North Kildonan. When I was driving around town today doing a few errands, I happened to catch the weather report on CBC radio around 3:00 PM and they reported 40 with the humidex at that time! :P

I am so happy Nero made it back to the nest box. I have been so worried about him. I am just going to sleep so much better tonight.
I know you are not supposed to get attached to these wonderful birds but I do. Tonight I was talking to my daughter before I knew Nero was safe. (I was afraid to read here and maybe read the worst) She said to me "But Mom it is nature...you can't always save a protect them. They are wild birds and sometimes things don't work out the way you want them to".
Well anyhow I am just so happy to hear they are all fine and I hope they stayed safe while this brief storm blew through here a little while ago.

I've been stupidly busy again and just realized that I haven't given y'all an update lately.
So here goes.
Yesterday not much happened, bit of flying to and fro, but more yelling for food than moving their wings.
Today......... very different. Found 2 kids and 2 adults very quickly, kids yelling, parents ignoring.
Looked around for # 3 chick but no luck. After about an hour of waiting and watching the 2 chicks do some aerobatics ( not very gracefully I might add ) I heard a plaintive chick call from another direction.
There he/she was, about 6 stories up, calling for food. ::)
It finally realized that delivery didn't go there, so off it took, gained great height and landed back on the nest box building, on the far side. He/she yacked his/her way all along the ledge of the building, doing the Mr. Burns crawl with a bit of flapping thrown in, finally making it back to familiar territory. It proceeded to yell it's head off for more than half an hour, gave up and had a snooze on the ledge. And that's where I left them, all three kids and the parents back home where they belong....... for the time being. ;D
I'm going out every morning for the rest of the week, so I'll try to do a better job of keeping you all in the loop.

Apologies for the lateness of this post, its been a long day. Here are Tuesday's observations from WWW :
Zipped by the nest around 10am and spotted 4 birds on the roof ledge. Two were hanging out about a foot apart just under the cam, one was all alone way at the other end of the ledge squawking non stop. The last one occupied what I believe is the West Winnipeg Prime Falcon Real Estate - the pirch on top of the cam! This spot seems to be the most popular on site - it is occupied by a bird just about every time I am here.
I had a look at the West Wpg Nest a few times this afternoon but must say that it has been VERY quite here. The wind is blowing quite strong from the west. This may be why I have not seen any fly-bys. I normally see the kids perched on either the pipe (see Dennis's photos) right by the cam or else on the ledge that faces south, but was not able to spot anyone all afternoon. I've also enjoyed a lot of yakking lately, but not today! It is so quiet here that I'm convinced that everyone must be napping this afternoon.
Sorry everyone - I have squat to report from this afternoon!

I've been very quiet with posts on the forum for the past few weeks, but please know that I have been reading with keen interest all the other posts. So nice to see everything progressing smoothly.
I have a question but am not sure if this is the best place to ask. I'll ask anyway, feel free to comment or TPC can move the post where it best belongs.
Does anyone know if Peregrines dine on black crows? I know they eat pidgeon, which we have a lot of in the city, but we also seem to have a lot of black crows. Seems to me that a crow, being larger, would make for a nicer Peregrine meal. However, I always see the crows in groups that can be agressive. Would this make them less desireable? Why risk a fight with crows when Pidgeon fast food is so easy? Just wondering.

For some reason, Crows don't seem like they'd taste very good - softer, quieter, less aggressive pigeons seem like they'd be yummier...Don't crows also eat road kill...? :P

I have a question but am not sure if this is the best place to ask. I'll ask anyway, feel free to comment or TPC can move the post where it best belongs.
Does anyone know if Peregrines dine on black crows? I know they eat pidgeon, which we have a lot of in the city, but we also seem to have a lot of black crows. Seems to me that a crow, being larger, would make for a nicer Peregrine meal. However, I always see the crows in groups that can be agressive. Would this make them less desireable? Why risk a fight with crows when Pidgeon fast food is so easy? Just wondering.
Crows are about the same size as peregrines so they aren't a first choice though it has turned up a few times on prey lists, though I'm not sure its turned up on ours over the years. Pigeons are much smaller and easier to transport, crows are very large and would take alot of "work" to get them into smaller packages for transport. And there are lots of species that peregrines eat, pigeon is only one though it does appear to be popular when feeding hungry chicks - easy to catch and transport (hence why they are called "Peregrine Kraft Dinner). This pair are very fond of shorebirds - rails, soras, snipes and grebes. From prey remains, common snipes appear to be most popular pre/post nesting in the West Winnipeg territory.

Such a nice day for flying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First I'd like to mention that yesterday around supper time(ish) I had a quick look at the site. At first I could not see or hear anyone at all from either of my 2 best viewing spots. After a few minutes I saw a tiny black spot very very high up in the sky. At first I thought it was a spot of dirt on my glasses but then realized that it was doing very graceful circles higher than I have ever seen a peregrine fly. I'm sure it had to be an adult; it was still very windy at the site, I could not imagine one of the kids getting up so high, and the movement was much to graceful to be any of the kids. Simply beautiful.
This morning I didn't spot any action however around noon I got to see two kiddies having a blast, possibly playing TAG. I saw 2 juveniles (sorry folks, not good enough to be able to distinguish between chicks) doing practice circles around the building. They seem to be flying higher today that I have seen them fly before. They are much less choppy with their wing movements - but not yet nearly as graceful as the folks. Landings still need more practice as well. I have also noticed that the flights are a little longer in duration and farther away from the nest.
Peregrine Tag: One bird up on the roof. Second Bird takes off and does a very large circle around and beside the building. This process involves a little bit of yakking that may translate as YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!! Upon completion of flight, land near bird sitting on the roof ledge after much erratic wing flapping. Within about 10 seconds of landing, second bird takes off and goes for a spin.

Do the young peregrines/ fledglings ever fly at night or much into the dusk? It seemed that in the morning the Radisson chicks would fledge and or take off often at first light. Oops I just remembered one of them took off in the evening. Was it still light? I'll look back.

I was out tonight and dropped in to see the WW birds tonight. Sat there for about an hour. Saw all 3 little ones and one parent. They were very vocal and seemed to take turns in a little flying. They were doing pretty good with the wind. To me it looked like they had to work a bit harder going back to the roof top. My heart stops everytime one of them takes flight. Saw one parent there who was sitting down on the ledge below the roof. The parent was out of site of the little ones because when they saw him/her they would really start to squawking. I think there might have been a feeding while I was there. A parent flew in barely stayed on the roof and all three left the edge facing the parking lot, there was a lot of squawking and were gone for a little while. Parent then perched on the corner ledge below the nest.
I just can't believe how addicting it is to watch them.

Spent a lovely couple of hours at West Winnipeg this morning.
All 5 present and accounted for. Not much flying, but lots of yacking. ::)
One kiddie, whom I've nicknamed "The Brat " continues to harass Beau by flying around him and then either trying to land on Beau or knock him off his perch. It's very effective, and Beau ends up moving either way. The brat keeps yelling and flying until Beau is out of sight.
One of the kids was pancaked on the edge of the ledge, one wing hanging over the ledge.
Talk about nonchalant ;D ;D
Very calm day, nice blue sky, what a great way to start the day.

Hello Ian. Not knowing what an American Kestral is, I did a google search and came up with a You Tube video called American Kestral Release. If anyone cares to watch........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J84lWCgHa48 Very fascinating, A mini peregrine. When the person put his/her hand in the box, the Kestral hopped on his hand like a parakeet. Took awhile for it to fly off. Acted more like a pet than a raptor. Welcome to the forum and thanks for your post. Brave little soul going up against the crows. GCG

gem: This year during our banding ceremony, a little American Kestral started attacking our mom here ! It was hilarious and fortunately mom was more distracted by the banders and just regarded the kestral as a fly...there is video of it under the Etobicoke topic from back in June when we did the banding.

On the question of food groups and favorites, I saw what was left of the bottom end of something with webbed feet on the Radisson today. That's a first for me. I'm going to assume duck, as too small for goose. Maybe Princess is following Tracy to the marsh (swamp) and is a little jelous of her other "friends".

Little rainy this morning and therefore rather quiet In west Winnipeg. However, about 7:30 the fun began. All chicks were sitting on the ledge, looking rather drenched. Then it started to clear and Jules deciided to dive bomb someone on a neighbouring roof. The kids heard her and started yelling for food. Finally Beau shows up with breakfast and the feeding is on. Yelling, flapping and feathers flying everywhere. Beau lands farther along the ledge and sure enough, the brat appears from the other side of the building, circles around and tries to land on dad's head. Quick exit by Beau, the brat lands and calls for food, which neither parent gives it.
I left about 9, all are accounted for and doing fine.

I didn't have many chances to check on our West Winnipeg family today due to a veterinary emergency at home. I did manage to check in around 11am and although I couldn't see anyone from my vantage point, boy oh boy could I ever hear them!!! I don't know what the excitement was all about but can only think that it was feeding time for the three amigos. I have not yet witnessed a feeding but think, based on what BCCS said in her posts, that this must have been what was going on.
Sheesh - and I thought human children were noisy!

The West Winnipeg chicks have been very civilized in their flying, they wait until it is light. Most birds won't fly in the dark (nocturnal species notwithstanding) though some resident peregrines have been observed hunting by city light pollution or raiding their caches to feed hungry chicks in the pre-dawn hours.

1713 hrs (local) - one of the kids is lying in front of the nestbox cam (all you can see is wings and tail and back) as that is the spot on the roofedge that is in the shade from the box's roof. Very cute. I suspect (for no particular reason I can explain and I can't see his "tape") that it is Nero.

I just got home from spending a wonderful morning watching the birdies. So nice not to have to leave at a particular hour to get to work.
I was standing in the parking lot and up rolls Dennis. Had a nice chat with him and along comes Eye-spy. Well the three of us started with the witty reparte that we have become quite well-known for and laughing our fool heads off. Sweet ;D
Dennis was taking pictures like mad, ES and I were talking with passers-by.
It was a fairly quiet morning for our birdies. The Brat has been identified by Dennis as Nero, our boy-bah-boy. And yes, he went after Beau a couple of times today.
After Dennis left, we just sat back in our lawnchairs and watched the birdies.
At one point, Beau started to yack and fly around the building. He was agitated about something. Sure enough, over our heads from behind, came Jules chasing a hawk. No kidding y'all, a hawk. :o :o
Beau joined Jules and they both escorted the hawk out of the area.
Were the kids grateful for having their parents be so protective of them....... nope, they just yelled for food. ::)
And that was the watch for today.
I'll be back to the nest site again tomorrow and will fill you in then.

One of the chicks was hanging out in front of the box cam after the rain ... funnily enough, no one in the box during the rain, just one after the rain.
Interestingly, Annie was the one hanging out by herself yesterday on camera ...

1600 hrs (local) - two of the chicks have been asleep in the nestbox for the last hour - keeping out of the sun. One of the adults dropped by and was sitting on the roof of the box then jumped down to take a drink from a puddle on the roof a bit beside the nestbox. First time I've seen any of our birds do that at this site ... with the rain we've had, that shallow puddle comes and goes ...

After a busy day doing things other than birding...I had a look at WW to find.
6:40-Nero feeding inside the nest box, not sure what it was...smaller than a crow (and no black feathers) larger than a sparrow ! Appears to be a whole bird ???
6:50- A sister shows up and perches on the lower camera.
6:54-Sister catches some ZZZZZ's
After 20 min Nero is still eating...and sister is still watching >:(
7:03-Sister is into to the nest box looking for left overs :)
Nero leaves the meal and it appears to be Annie that has come for left-overs :-\
7:21-Annie drags the remains up out of the nest box and leaves it on the ledge ???
With the shadows and low light it's even hard to see the color bands ( yellow/silver)...if I'm wrong TPC will correct me !
Just my observations this evening !

The last photo in the West Winnipeg Fledge Watch was in fact was a Swainson Hawk Chick. Trying to do 3 things at once doesn't always work and I didn't check the photos till well after I returned home this evening.

1115 hrs (local) - all quiet on the western front. Hot has Hades out there but no one has come to the box to get out of the sun - now that the sun is higher in the sky, not so much shade at this time of day as there used to be. Later in the afternoon, I'm pretty sure we'll get a look at one or two of them again napping in the nestbox shade on the ledges ... so nice to see, the Radisson chicks were not nearly as accommodating!

Nothing to worry about kinderchick. Every year we have one that just loves the nestbox and comes back to lay down in it and nap..it's usually one of the girls that does it... :)

So, what happened today you ask??
It was grand. Quiet for the first hour or so and then the kids started showing off their flying skills. And skillful they have become. Talon touching, sideways flying, aerobatics, catching thermals, you name it, they pretty much did it. Hard to believe that they've only been flying for just over a week.
As TPC said, very hot out there, but it was worth the discomfort. Dennis again got some outstanding photos, Eye-spy was entertaining and Little spy was a joy.
I can't believe that I'll be going directly to work tomorrow and not going out there to see the family. :'(

I'm absolutely thrilled about what happened this year! Yes, there were many questions, comments and remarks in the beginning, but, look what happened in the end!

Different sites, different rules. The Radisson has alot more places for the chicks to go play on, not so many in West Winnipeg and the West Winnipeg site has alot more space for the chicks to do all sorts of things - practice jumping up/down, flying, landings/take-offs, etc. Probably why the chicks come back to hang out near the box, just a really nice place to hang-out. Their parents visit the spot all through the breeding season, one of the reasons we put the nestbox there.

Report from WWW from yesterday ...
Today it is windy at West Winnipeg. I did not spot any of our birds this morning but did get to see one of the kids flying around this afternoon.
It was around 2pm when I ped by; I again didn't spot anyone on the roof or on any of the usual ledges or perches. After a few minutes of watching I did see one of the kids flying circles quite high up in the sky. You can see that the flyers are much stronger and more confident by the day, and they now go much higher than before. I've also noticed that the effects of the wind are now much less visible, and that they fly her distances from the nest than they did at first.
Whereas flights used to be choppy and a little frantic looking (IE: flap flap flap GLIDE, flap flap flap flap, flapflapflapflapflap. . . .) they are now more elegant (IE: Strong flap, strong flap, GLIDE, GLIDE, GLIDE, GLIDEeeeeeeeeeeeeee, flap, glideeeeeeeeeeeeeee).

Aggie had it first, Annie wanted it and neither one is willing to let go - Aggie is currently tyring to pull it out of the box and therefore away from Annie. I think they are also worried that Nero might find out they have treats ... no sign of him on-camera so they make finish it off before he realizes what he's missing ...

I have very little to report from West Winnipeg today. I was at the site just before the rain started this morning and spotted our independant wanderer all alone on the ledge at the far end from the nest box. S/he (in my mind it's probably Nero) was not doing much other than sitting on top of the world enjoying the view. I did not spot any others flying or hanging around.
I managed a quick look this afternoon as well, I knew they were around based on TPC's food-fight posts, but was not able to spot anyone. I guess they must be right in or around the nest box which I am not able to see from the ground.
Hopefully there will be more of an air show tomorrow!

I do have alot of shots ... am currently working on setting up a proper photo gallery for WW photos, this is really our first year for them so need to set it up so y'all can find what you want to see easily - also in the hope that Jules & Beau will be back next year and we will have more photos to add to the collection!

Those little stinkers, they have been hiding on me!!!
I spent some time at the West site today and noticed for the first time one of the birds on a small ledge lower down on the building. It was in the shade and blended with the building so I don't even know how I spotted it. I have to wonder exactly how long this particular spot has been in use without me noticing!
Later in the evening you could see three birds up on the roof with two apparently playing TAG. One would swoop out of the sky almost onto the head of the one sitting on the roof ledge. Then that one would take off as the flyer grabbed the spot that was vacated. The new flyer would then do a few air circles, which by the way are as strong flights as the adults now - just a little choppy during the landings.
Just before sunset I noticed that two birds were very close together on the lower ledge again. This appears to be a favorite spot now, and I think there may even be a food stash there (seriously - HOW DID I MISS THEM AT THIS SPOT BEFORE??). Like I said, those little stinkers have been hiding right in front of my eyes. A third bird was bedding down for the night just under the pole that is often used as a perch.
I'll try to have more complete observations now that I know where else on the building to look for them

As an addendum to WWW's post, the lower ledge she is talking about isn't big enough for a food stash, its just a wonderfully sheltered location that is one of the major reasons this site has been very popular with migrating birds for more than 20 years, and one of the reasons we installed a nestbox here. It will be interesting to see who turns up after Jules and Beau have started on their southern migration ...

I stopped by there on my way home yesterday. I also thought at first there was no birds around. Then I spotted on sitting on a ledge below the roof. He/she took a little fly about and then landed back there. I only stayed for about 5 - 10 min. When I left he/she was still sitting there.

Today was an odd day for watching the birdies. Got there around 9, one other watcher was there. Within half an hour, we were joined by 3 others and then finally got to meet WWW. We had a grand time watching the building ::), no birdies to be found anywhere.
Many people came by to talk with us and were so very delighted that the peregrines had nested there this year and have been so successful. Met a couple with two standard poodles and boy oh boy, we learned tons about poodles. Nice dogs and very nice owners. They stayed for about 20 minutes, asked great questions about our family and seemed to be hooked as they were talking about coming back later today or tomorrow and watch for a while.
Still no birdies. :(
Then we see a man on the roof, I said wait for it, and sure enough, within about 45 seconds we heard the yelling and then saw Jules and Beau telling the man to get off THEIR roof..... NOW.. ;D
Never saw the man again, but in come two ( could have been all three for all the circling that was going on ) chicks and they are also dive-bombing and yelling.
They settled down after about 20 minutes and I have to tell you, the two hours of watching with none of them showing up, was worth the twenty minutes of aerobatics.
So all in all, a very nice morning. Lovely birds, great phanatics and so very nice to meet new people.

As bccs said the 2 hours of no birds was worth the wait to see them flying about. It was like they came from no where. You could hear them before you could see them. Very vocal bunch.

Friday the 6th observations from the West Wpg Watcher ...
Friday evening there was a bit more action at West Winnipeg. For about a half hour there were a few flying around the nest but they were way to high for me to determine if they were the parents or the kids. At one point though it did look almost as if it may have been two of the kids playing air-tag. I was also not able to determine the other flyers based on the flight movements - the kids are now quite strong flyers. Yup, not as strong as the parents - but quite good.
Also spotted one on the roof ledge, one lower on the building on a smaller ledge. It is nice to see that they are still coming back to the nest building at night. This "family" seems to be a little more tight knit than the Raddison nest. They appear to put up with and maybe even enjoy each other's company fairly well.

WWW's Saturday the 7th observations ...
Wow, I'm not sure exactly what happened at West Winnipeg around 4pm this afternoon, but something sure got the bird's attention.
I was walking nearby when suddenly I heard squawking like I've never heard them before! Something had two of the birds quite upset - maybe the man bccs saw on the roof was there again? The two birds were dive bombing a zillion miles per hour then looping around agressively, yakking all the way. It only lasted about a minute or so, then suddenly they were both gone and all was quiet.
I'll tell 'ya, if I was the guy on the roof and those two birds reacted the way that I got to see today, I'm pretty sure I would have wet my pants..........or worse.

Might not have been the guy, there's a pair of Swainson Hawks not very far away and I've seen them get very mad about their presence in the area. :-\

0800 hrs (local) - went by the Diner this morning and there were two of the West Winnipeg kids sitting on two sides of the building - not in their parents favourite corners, but mid-way along each wall. Nice to see them exploring a bit further from the nest site!

What do you think out peregrines will make of the meteor showers? Notice, but no perceived threat? Watch like a drive in movie/ or at least thunderstorms(Hurricane and others)?
If your camera is still working at the site and they happen to be in the nest, please let us know. I'm assuming it still keeps recording??

Sadly, I have not been privy to many goings on at West Winnipeg so far this week. I have spotted one or two birds several times, but each time they have been sitting and napping or enjoying the views. I am normally at the site more during daytime when it is hotter, so it appears the (smart) birdies are a little less active. Will continue to keep an eye on them and let you know about any goings on. For today - just basically checking it.

Meteor shower - don't think they will even notice, just not big enough/close enough to catch their interest. The Radisson birds tend not to pay any attention to the firework displays downtown thought the 2007 Radisson crew seemed to enjoy lightning storms (we had a lot that year) - so lightning entirely possible, meteors unlikely.
If your camera is still working at the site and they happen to be in the nest, please let us know. I'm assuming it still keeps recording?? Perhaps they are already used to them!
Camera is still recording but we have only had a couple of visits on camera over the last week so I'm probably going to get the recording part turned off shortly. I'll still be able to watch for a bit longer, but we will have to removed the equipment in the next little while so the the building management company can finally get window-cleaners on the building and do some other annual roof maintenance that they have been putting off until the birds left. They haven't quite left the building yet, folks are still getting dive-bombed on the roof, but that shouldn't be an issue by about the end of the month, or not much of an issue.

Ran by a couple of hours ago and there was an adult sitting on the "letters". No one flying around the area that I could see.

Was in the area this morning. Stopped to see what was going on. One bird was leaving as I got there and one was sitting on the corner with his/her back to me. Looked to be a fair size. No one else showed up, he/she did not leave. I sat there for a little while and then left.
Very fresh morning out there.

Dennis spotted all three there this morning but I didn't manage to get there before # 3 took off ... I suspect s/he took off for a more sheltered location, though I'm not sure where, couldn't find Jules, Beau or the third chick ... Dennis didn't have his camera, but I did :D

An early morning visit finds Jules at the nest site...with one chick and Beau at the diner. The chick was having breakfast and feathers flying like snow flakes.

Hard to believe I know, but that is how it was. Actually, he was the smart cookie, it was raining and blowing, I had a sweatshirt on (didn't think to wear a rain jacket in my rush to get out there) and I had on a toque - yes a toque on August 15th - darn near froze my eardrums anyway. Smart Dennis without his camera sat in his van and stayed dry, me, I'm braced against a wet vehicle to counter the wind, holding my hand like an umbrella over the lens of my camera, rain dribbling down the back of my sweatshirt and the wind blowing across the back of my wet neck. Even if he had had his camera, not sure he would have admitted it me ... ;)

There are always two or three peregrines in or near their nest area in the half hour around sunset- at least on the usually 4 times a week I go to check. I've never checked in the rainy weather!

Hello Phanatics!!
I've been keeping my eye on the West Nest for the past few weeks, and am happy to report that everything seems to be fine here. I still see both adults & kiddies; mostly flying around but also sometimes perched on "their" building. They seem to prefer the ledges as opposed to the nest box area lately. All in all it appears that they are happily growing and enjoying themselves.
One thing did strike me this morning as I paused to have a look at the site; I could hear geese flying in the air so looked up and sure enough there were two groups / rows of them doing practice flights. As I scanned the sky looking for more, I spotted a Peregrine on the corner of the building that also appeared to be watching the show put on by the geese. If I had a camera, I could probably have caught all the birds together in one shot - would have made an interesting pic.

There was 3 perigins at their old stmping ground. 2 flyong circles high up over traffic, and one sitting on the south east corner of one of their hangouts.

Checked the site just before 7:00 this morning. Walked around the site and saw 5 falcons
When I completed the walk around, the first falcon - the sentinel on the right was gone, the others left flying purposefully away over the next 10-15 minutes, so I still think there were all 5 at one time, but the "sentinel" which I saw 1st was simply the first to go. All had left their spots by 7:25.
I was lucky enough to see some aerobatics there on my way home Saturday.
They were putting on a great show in the wind from about 4:00 to at least 4:30. Mom was there and at least 2 young ones just circling, holding position , sailing around. One chasing the other at one point. Just having a great time using the wind! And motionless often.
And then at times bring their wings in a bit and darting through the wind,then swooping around the building corners above and just below...you get the picture.
So fabulous.
Sorry to have missed the picnic, but happy that the route between the 2 things I had to do on that day took me close enough to check on them.

WWW emailed me with an update last night ....
I have not sent an update for quite a long time! There has not been too much to report, most days at this site are fairly quiet with late afternoon/ early evening being the usual best time to view or hear some action. Not every day though - just if you're lucky.
I have noticed during this week though that there has been a lot more going on. The birds seem to be more vocal in the mornings than they have been for the last little while. Both yesterday and today there was major morning squawking going on. I've also spotted birds hanging out on the building at varrious times of day. Not sure if this apparent change in behaviour means anything?

Saw 2 there tonight just before dark - one sentinel and one tucked in a little lower down..Tried to get a better look at the one above - the breast seemed on the dark side, but given the 7:15 to 7:35 it was really hard to be sure. Great to see them anyway!
