Title: West Winnipeg - 2011 / Beau & Jules
Post by: The Peregrine Chick on March 17, 2011, 07:37
No idea if it is a resident bird or if Sandy from the Radisson is having a wander, but there is a peregrine perched on the corner of the building right beside last year's nestbox.

Dennis - does Wowzer need to get out for a walk yet??  ;)

Looking at the timing, looks like WW birdie was Sandy inspecting our other nestboxes ... she disappeared from the WW nestsite and reappeared at the Radisson within a couple of minutes.

So no new birds in Winnipeg it looks like ... but remember, we are still two or more weeks early ...

Saw somebirdy around 2:20 on the R - east side of the Radisson- nasty wind, too!
Checked around the West Nest right after - no sign of anybirdy - but couldn't see into the nest and it was very windy!
Warm sunny weather needed!
Must be great to have those 2 cams, TPC!

About and hour later Pam calls and is watching Sandy/we think having lunch...since it's about coffee break time I tell Pam I will call her back.
A few minutes later I put a call into the glass tower...do you a bird I ask, Pam's reply was yes  :D

Took the little one tobogonogoning for one more time after skool and spoted, I'm sure anyway, 2, yes 2, rather peregrinish boids riding the breeze around the westnest spot, exibiting all the traits of a berd that makes the rules.  Could I be wrong....... a small chance.  Am I ?  I doubt it .......

Dennis and I have been out trolling through town since 9 this morning.  No birds at all in the West Winnipeg territory, but we did find Jules hanging out in the Radisson territory, northwest of the Radisson and then on the HSC campus.  Dennis took photos with Wowzer so they should appear in his gallery in a while (no pressure Dennis  ;D)

No birds at all at any of the WW favourite locations however and no Beau with his bright red band (yet).

The second bird was probably the second bird that is now downtown ... you'll have to go check the Radisson thread for more on him/her ...

Haven't seen any one on their favourite buildings in the West Winnipeg territory or on the cams at the nestsite for the last few days.  Dennis is pretty sure he saw Jules north of the Radisson territory on a communication tower yesterday so maybe she's just waiting for all the snow to melt in the nestbox or maybe its warmer there.  I know that Madame often used to be found near Garden City when it got very cold downtown when she overwintered here.  Less wind we believed.

Here's our first note from our West Winnipeg Watcher ...

Hello again!

I have been absent from the forum so far this year (2011) due to some family medical issues.  This time it was my father; just about lost him in Feb but he somehow managed to pull through.  Prognosis is not great - 6 months to a year - but hopefully we can extend that.  I don't know how I would manage any more grief after having lost my beloved Musska last fall.

I also do taxes every year, so I am mostly away from work until after April 30th.  However, I did stop by my business today and had a look out the back door.  I'm sure that you are aware that we have at least one bird here so far.  I waited around for quite a while looking for #2 but no luck.

I will not be here much over the next month, however after that I plan to be active on the forum again this year, and will be happy to help out with fledge watch duties when the time comes.

Until then, sorry for my long absense, sorry for my next month of absense - (Yes, I do miss everyone!).  Looking forward to a happy and healthy nest full of falcons again this year!

Nope, not so far.  Just Jules hanging out at the B&B and the Diner and at a "new" location a long way north which we will call the "crow's nest".    Despite its name, its not suitable for a peregrine (or any other kind of bird) nest on.  She likes it I think because she can see a long way from it when hunting.

We are only now at the time that most of the Manitoba peregrines return, so no worries if it takes another week for Beau to return.  In fact, Beau was the last bird to arrive last year and they did just fine in the end.

Did you have any luck or is that Wowser's job this year? ???

Not so far ... and I'm not sure that even Wowzer can read her band but we will keep giving it a try.  Imagine a washer and a nut (hardware kind of nut).  Jules' ring band is somewhere between the two widths and the numbers on the band are written around the circumference.  And there are 6-8 numbers.  We will need to get very lucky to read all the numbers with any kind of camera, but we will persevere.  ;D

This sounds like a different type of band than what I remember seeing placed on chicks (although I have very limited experience with this). Is this unusual? Are there specific places where they use these bands? It sounds like you would have to be actually holding the leg in your hand to be able to read it.

Jules' band is called a "ring band" or a "breeders band".  Its not used on birds for release, rather birds in breeding programs or falconry birds.  Until we know technically who she is and where she came from, we can only speculate on why she still has it on.  A possible explanation is that she was a falconry bird or part of a breeding program and it was decided to release her and she wasn't given the coloured/aluminimum bands we put on all our birds.  Could have been an accident, oversight or maybe she managed to escape during banding.  The other explanation is that she's an escaped falconry bird, but many falconry birds (or maybe all of them now) have radio transmitters on them so that they can be tracked down by the falconer.  Falconers spend alot of time care for and flying their birds on a daily basis so they take care to keep track of them in case they get into trouble.

My husband and I were out on our scooters this afternoon, taking in the sun and having a snack. On the way home at about 3:45 we swung by the nest building (is that the B&B?) and saw one of the peregrines scanning the area from their usual ledge. Suddenly it took off, then we saw two peregrines circling the skies and one was very high up. While the peregrine was perched my husband waved at it, he does humor me alot.

Went for a drive at 5:30 after work, swung by the Dinner and spotted one of the birds, then swung by the bleachers and spotted the other. Did a little shopping then swung by the two spots again just before 7:30. They were in the same spots as before and seemed to have little concern about the snow coming down.

Beau and Jules are currently hanging out at the site Jules tried to nest on in 2009 and where she lost all her eggs.  We do have a nestsite nearby so we are positive yet if they are seriously considering the site or just hanging out there because its pretty sheltered from the wind.  We hope they aren't seriously considering it of course, so we'll be keeping and extra close eye on them for the next little while ...

It does amaze me though how they would go there with what I think ought to be numerous other options in the city. Surely Beau (or Mr. X) would not even know of that place's existence, so I'd think Jules would have to have been the one who led him there. It's all so interesting.

Either Beau or Jules was camped out on the Diner (think it was Beau) when I went past early this morning, but s/he was gone by 9-9:30 when Dennis checked.  Didn't see their significant other anywhere, but that might just mean they were off getting breakfast ...

Its called "the Bleachers" MsD.  :)

And just for reference for folks from away, the Bleachers, the Diner and the B&B (where they nested last year) are all within a minute's flying time of one another ... we still don't like when they hang out at the Bleachers.

Drove by last year's nest site yesterday afternoon, no sightings but did ask a workman about work being done.  Window washers were at the highest windows on one side.  Apparently roofing had just finished on a nearby building, more roofing to be done on a larger flat-roofed area nearby, and bids were in for other buildings including nesting one.  Bidding to working takes time and owners have been co-operative, so just keeping you up to date on what a worker told me.

Spent about an hour hanging out with Beau and Jules this evening before the sun went down and other than a little loving at sunset, it was pretty much just hanging around and not doing much.  Might indicate that they are about to start laying eggs or it might take a wee bit longer.  They were not giving any hints as to what they are going to do where.  I'm afraid that it will take that first egg to before we'll know for sure!

West Winnipeg birds may have started to lay but have not started to incubate.  We are having difficulty accessing the site at the moment but hopefully this week we will be able to get a clear look at the nestsite.

Both birds are fine and doing all the things a peregrine does in the spring  ;)

We don't actually even know if they have chosen a site, won't know until we can see if they have started laying.  We haven't been able to access the site we suspect they are using but when we do, our plan is to set up a camera to keep an eye on them again this year.  And yes, we do have all the tech prepped and ready to go.  But we must wait until we can actually check out the site.  Just a logistical glitch at the moment, when we get it sorted, we'll be able to get up there and then things should tick along quickly.  We think they are on the same time line as the Brandon birds and they have just started incubating.  We know that the WW birds haven't started incubating so we still have 1 month+ before hatching.  And the delay is not criticial just annoying.  If they are laying, better to leave them to it.  If they were incubating the chances of them abandonning the site because we visit it is low, in part because they are committed at that point and in part because we won't be staying long.  So annoying because we don't know for sure what they are doing and where they are doing it, or at least not yet.

So its just plan and be ready to go when we need to go.

At about 5:30 my husband and I swung by the bleachers to see if the peregrines were there. As we got close one falcon flew overhead and landed on the usual rail next to the other falcon. I finally got to see both Beau and Jules in a way that I could compare sizes.

They were talking to each other for a minute, when Beau then hopped/dropped to the floor of the balcony they were at. Unfortunately since we had ice cream melting in the car we couldn't hang around to watch any further. ???

Still no word on Beau & Jules?  Shouldn't they have started laying eggs already?

We hope so.  They have been so unsettled over the last couple of weeks that we have backed off plans to disturb where we think they are/considering nesting.  We just want them to lay and start incubating and then we can do what we need to.  When they start incubating they are less likely to abandon the site - and from last year, we know they are good at their job once they get down to doing it.  Its just the getting down to do it part.

The cool wet weather is also a time we try to avoid bugging any of our pairs ...

TPC - Do you think the new pair in town is making them so unsettled?

There are two new pairs in town and about 4 migrating birds recently but the answer is "no".  Neither Princess nor Ivy are any more unsettled than usual.  And Princess and Ivy look just like Trey and Princess when they were incubating together.  Can't say that they look like Madame and Pop/Simba/Trey but that was because Madame was an entirely different kettle of fish!

The Brandon birds are about 10 days behind the Radisson and the only real difference is that the Radisson birds are bored in the box and keep looking for things to clean.  The Brandon birds have lots to clean but haven't really seen them doing much of it, perhaps they are waiting for the boredom factor to hit its zenith!

Sorry, multitasking at the time.  Don't think the other pairs are a problem as they are even further away from the WW birds than they are from the Radisson ones.  Beau and Jules are twitchy by nature though they are better.  They have moved their nestsite this year it looks like and the spot they have chosen is far from optimal and I suspect that is what is making them stupid, well more stupid, about nesting.  She was the same kind of twitchy in 2009.  In 2010, despite being the first bird back and getting a new man quickly, it too these two forever to nest.  Last year they laid between May 8-14th, so they aren't late just annoying :)

Well it is unfortunate that they didn't chose last years site. What actually binds them to a site? As to what binds a bird to a nestsite, it can be a building or success or something we don't know about.  They would have used last year's box this year if they could have but there is construction going on there so too much disturbance for a nesting pair. Hopefully with the site quiet again next year they will go back there - or use box # 2.

So are you saying that they have not chosen a nestbox, TPC, not the newer one or the older one? ???

So far it doesn't look as though they have chosen anywhere yet ... were we thought they were laying they weren't defending today when they should have been.  So we will have to go back on the hunt again.  If we are very lucky, perhaps they have finally decided to go to box #2 which they have been ignoring up to now.

We are a bit puzzled by this pair actually.  They aren't defending territory and are mostly not even around so we really don't know what they are up to.  No reports recently from suspected nestsites but it has been a bit so we will need to get access to the locations again very soon.

These guys are running out of time, another couple of weeks and they will be making it very difficult for themselves to raise young this year.  Hopefully they have realized that in the last few days and we'll find them somewhere unexpected with eggs ...  :-\

We finally were able to get to this year's nestsite and yes, Beau and Jules are trying to nest this year.  Four eggs have been laid, don't know if any of them will turn out to be viable in the end but two I think are iffy, two are possibles.

We have installed a nest tray under the eggs and Jules took to it within minutes so no worries there.  The location is sheltered but the substrate is poor so the eggs haven't had any real protection.  The nest tray (aka tuppernest) has solved that problem.  We will just have to see what happens.

And yes, we can "see" we have installed two cameras for monitoring purposes only - just like last year, we will not be streaming this nestsite to the 'net.

Its a waiting game now.

Oh, this is such good news, to hear that Beau & Jules have finally nested and layed some eggs! ;D Fingers crossed that maybe a few of them will be viable. Great news, also, that you were able to install a tuppernest to protect the eggs and that E-S was able to install a spy camera, for you to keep an eye on them, TPC. :-*

They would have used last year's box this year if they could have but there is construction going on there so too much disturbance for a nesting pair. We hoped they would use penthouse nestbox # 2 but no.  Hopefully with the 2010 site will be available in 2012 - we are going to do our darndest to make this year's site unavailable next year.

Jules and Beau are quiet, but this year kind of spooky silent.  Even on strafing runs she didn't make a sound today.  And they building has been having work done on it for the last couple of weeks and the birds have not been attacking the workers.  If it were the Radisson or Brandon birds, someone would have gotten a good scare by now and would have auditory nightmares after listening to the birds scream at them by now.  Last year, Jules and Beau came so close to hitting us when we were retrieving the chicks for banding but this year they aren't doing what we would expect, even just based on last year's performance.  I have to assume its the location affecting how they responde to perceived threats.  It would be great if next year if they would go back to last year's site and then we could see how they behave ...  :-\

Even if spooky silent, at least they have finally produced eggs, despite the nonstart at either the 2010 nest box or the penthouse site, and the false start at the unsuitable site.  It's great that you were able to track them down to provide them with the Tupper Nest, TPC.  We will be looking forward to reports of what they are up to thanks to Eye-spy's monitor cam.

"The Diner" is a nickname we have given to a building the West Winnipeg peregrines like to eat at.  We don't say where it is specifically because we are still having some problems with the safety and security of this pair.  And this year they aren't helping us any.

so you know how long the eggs have been there or is that a guess.

Because no one has been able to access the site, or check on it for us, we aren't really sure.  There are four eggs, she is incubating so it is probably a week, maybe a bit more.  We will just have to count backward if the eggs hatch.

If only!  They are constantly in a state of not-quite-nervousness, but rather hyper-awareness I guess.  They seem to be always on guard which isn't good for their stress levels at this site.  We will defintely be keeping them off here next year!

That is too bad. I wonder what would make them pick a site that they did not feel secure at. Maybe they had to quickly , to get eggs laid.

HOpe all turns out well. :-*

We have finally managed to access the West Winnipeg site and found Beau and Jules incubating four eggs - two of which were damaged beyond hatching.  The remaining two looked okay in a quick visual survey but we will have to wait and see what happens.  We installed a nest tray to protect the remaining two eggs and cameras to monitor the site since access is difficult.  Neither Beau nor Jules have had any problems with the nest tray and so far the two damaged eggs have been discarded and the two undamaged eggs continue to be incubated.  When will they hatch, perhaps about June 10th but we don't know for sure since we aren't sure when incubation began.  So a real waiting game here!

Perhaps Moonstar, problem is the location itself and security/privacy issues.  We also have some electronic distortion which isn't a problem as we are using the equipment to monitor rather than share.  But I will see what I can do, best promise I can make I'm afraid.

Okay, TPC,I'm curious. So how does one make a site (assuming a roof top) unavailable ??? Or less desirable ???  Stand there 24/7 with a large sign saying "Peregrines not welcome" ??? ;D, make owl noises ???, or what ???

Oh and one other though, do they have any coverage at this site or is the tuppernest out  in the open like it was on east Radisson?

Basically yes.  Seriously though, you aren't wrong.  You just make the building too busy for the birds to be comfortable on or too difficult for them to access (the Kodak Building was off limits last year I believe as an example).  We did it last year at this site and it worked.  Didn't work this year.  This year the 2010 nest site has construction all over it, so its way to busy and in fact the birds have rarely visited it.  And we don't install a nestbox - the tuppernest is short-term and for use when they already laid eggs and we are just trying to up the odds of the eggs hatching.  We don't leave the tuppernests once they have served their purpose.

And we'd use signs if they could read and Cowboy and Kate ignored recordings of peregrine defence vocalizations at the CSC this year.

Oh and one other though, do they have any coverage at this site or is the tuppernest out  in the open like it was on east Radisson?

They aren't in the open at all at this site, most certainly not like the 2010 site.  This one they are squirrelled away under cover behind obstructions but because they are so short, their view is relatively unobstructed once they get on the nest.  Don't ask me how they found this location but they did ...  ::)

TPC I have a question............when you found the nest and put the eggs in the "tuppernest" you stated that you thought only two eggs were good.  How did you arrive at that fact?  Can you tell by the weight of the eggs at the time or is there a definite feel as to density of the egg?  Perhaps you answered this somewhere but If you did........ I guess I missed it!  Just a "need" to know kind of person ::)

No weights, no magical powers I'm afraid.  One of the eggs had a dent and a couple of fine cracks, the other had just the very fine cracks, both as a result of rolling and hitting something solid.  Its why we put the tuppernest in place.  With the gravel and the scrape in the gravel the parents don't causes the eggs to roll wildly away when the adult exits the nest quickly, usually in response to a threat or a perceived threat.  With the gravel, the eggs can't roll far no matter how explosive the departure.  I should also note that the two uncracked eggs just "felt" different in the minute or so I had them in my hands - nothing scientific, just an impression.

As of 0500ish this morning there are still two eggs, no sign of a pip or hatching yet ... the cameras are a bit different at this site, so we may or may not actually be able to see pips like we saw on the Brandon or Radisson cameras - different locations and different angles and different needs so different cameras.

Yup, sometimes its one of the "boys" who get to be lucky one watching the camera at just the right time.

As of noon, there were still two eggs in the box, no pips not nothing that I could see.  About 1400h herself started talking to her toes which as we have all come to realize is either a peregrine being goofy or its a Mama talking to her baby-in-waiting.  For Jules it was the latter.  And at 1748h, we had our first hatch for the West Winnipeg pair.

Lousy location that cost us two eggs, but the first of the two that they have been taking great care with in the tuppernest just made a perfect entrance in the late afternoon sunshine.

0403h - Jules left and Beau came to check out his offspring - hung out until Jules came back with a meal - European Starling and newly caught I believe - today was not a good day to be the "early bird".

0415h - chick's first meal, both Jules and the chick seemed to have the mechanics very well worked out - not alot of food but not alot of misses or fumbles either.

0937h - still just one chick from what I can see ...

Chick one is fine, chick two appears to have passed away at this point.

And no, it wasn't a question of weather, the box is high and dry, so no need to worry about the surviving chick, s/he looks great, active and strong and getting fed well.

As for the chick that died, that it survived to hatch at all was a long shot, but Nature doesn't play the odds.  Usually those kind of small miracles are a great thing.  Not in this case I'm afraid.  And no, there was nothing that could be done.

How could you tell that they knew something was wrong?

Usually they tuck everyone underneath, particularly the new ones and they tend to over do it right at the start.  She wasn't.  Chick hatched at night and was under her through the night but by the next morning, she had her/him out where she could watch him/her (daytime temps were warm so no real worries there).  The other chick was under and out-of-sight, the sick chick was where she could watch it.

Does that help?

Because of the current site, I'm not sure that photos are going to be possible ... in part because of the location, in part because the camera we are using here is not like the ones at the Radisson and Brandon - its for monitoring so it gives us an image that works great for that reason, but it won't provide you all with the images you want to see.  When we band the chick we will definitely take images and we will happily share those with folks.  This year's site is just not like last year's site I'm afraid ...  :'(

Having said that, I will see what I can perhaps find, just in case ... best I can promise folks ...

Jules has been monopolizing time with the chick over the last couple of days ... don't know if its her preference (like Princess) or if its because she's feeling more defensive.  Chick is growing by leaps and bounds though, it was doing some clumsy preening it looked like a bit earlier ...

Our WW chick has been uncovered with a parent nearby almost all day, not on him/her but on the edge of the tupperbox above him/her.  Watching that I realized that this chick is 9 days old as of today and almost old enough to fully thermoregulate on their own.  Over the next week s/he will be get much bigger very fast and will be starting to get that fluffy marshmallow look they get right before banding age.

They are all growing up so fast  :'(

Yes, we will definitely be banding this "solo" chick bcbird.  And yes, we can get the chick out of sight for the procedure.  Have no idea if we will be filming it but Dennis will take photos so everyone will eventually get a really good look at him/her.

Title: Re: West Winnipeg - 2011 / June
Post by: The Peregrine Chick on June 26, 2011, 11:20
Beau and Jules have been stressed at this site this year, despite the best efforts by the building tenants to disturb them as little as possible.  Last time Jules tried to nest here, she only made it half way through incubation before she realized her eggs were too damaged to be viable.  So she's never been here this long or rather been so protective/defensive for this long.  Last year's site wasn't disturbance free (no site is) but it was better than this.  I'm hoping that that will help to deter her from this site ever again.  Last year we managed to keep her off, this year with the loss of the 2010 site, I think she just wasn't going to take any chances with a "new" site and it didn't matter what we did.  Next year we have new plans to keep her from this particular location.

I think Beau really (really) hates this site now.  He spends almost no time with the chick these days, its all Jules.  During incubation he used to come in at night and stay awake all night on the egg and when the chick was a couple of days old.  Almost never saw him during the day.  Haven't seen him at the nest in 4-5 days, but have watched him hand-over food mid-air and do some straffing runs at the building but until last hour, I hadn't seen him on the cameras, day or night for days.  He stayed for about 20 minutes then he left.  Jules came in a few minutes later and was parked on the chick for 1/2 hour and now she's off again.

Little solo chick is not so very small anymore, sitting up, looking around, wandering the tuppernest, starting to preen and napping.  Likes to nap does this one.  Prefers to nap at his/her parents' feet though whether they are actually in the tuppernest with him/her or perched on the edge.  Chick is ten days old today but Jules is so protective that I suspect she'll stick closer for longer.  And being a solo, this chick won't fuss about it - Mom and Dad are its chickpile after all.  On the other hand, being a solo, this chick will probably (yes, this is a generalization) fledge early because s/he doesn't want to be left behind anymore.  We have had 4 nests with solos and they all fledged a bit early as I recall.  Ibon and Ena were incident free.  Sherpa went very early, went to ground, was re-released as he was uninjured - he turned up in Winnipeg a few years later.  Heather was our only solo Brandon chick - she did injure herself at or shortly after fledging and was non-releaseable.

Awwww!  I feel so sad for these solo chicks!  We can't see this one, but Tracy, you describe his/her circumstances so well it's just like being there.  I feel badly for Jules and Beau as well, with this less-then-ideal nest site.  Once again, I'm struck with the perseverance and stoicism of these birds.  Of all Nature in fact.  :-*

Checked out the WW birds at about 2:30.

Saw one sitting where I expected. This one started to get very vocal, so the other one popped up and joined the first. The first one continued to be vocal, jump off the railing, did a quick circle and returned to the railing. The second one dropped out of sight for a moment. When this happened the first one dropped down, rousted the second, and then once again both were on the railing. All the while the first one was cacking up a storm. Then the first one took off, headed toward the diner. The second one dropped back down out of sight. So I swung around and headed toward the diner to see if the first one made it there. Sure enough there was the first one on the NW corner of the building. Then it was time for me to head home.

Interesting report, but if you caused such a disturbance, I would think twice about doing it again.

Interesting report, but if you caused such a disturbance, I would think twice about doing it again.

The birds wouldn't have been reacting to Dupre, Linderlou, would have been something closer to the actual nest. Actually, given that the birds were vocalizing, I suspect it was at or right beside the nestsite.  Fortunately activity at the nest doesn't happen often. Because of this nestsite's location the adults are always getting disturbed and there is nothing to be done about it.  Mostly Jules and Beau are reacting to noises, but because they can't see where the noise is coming from, their first reaction is to bolt off the nest and defend.  More than half of the time there is nothing there but they are hardwired to do it anyway.  Its why this site is such a poor location for nesting.  From where Dupre was watching them, the birds notice you but we aren't close enough to be a threat.  Dennis and I camp out there when we watch from ground level and they know we are there but they don't do anything but give us a very suspicious look as the fly overhead.

I wish I could provide everyone with photos and details on the site, it would make it so easier to visualize these kinds of in-person reports!  I really hope the birds get back to their nestbox next year :-\

Today our little solo chick has mostly been by him/herself.  One of the adults stayed on the edge of the tuppernest until first breakfast (0443), alone until second breakfast (0704) and alone again (napping) until mid-morning snack (1030).  Nothing since, but that is a very usual pattern for meals, lots in the morning, a longer interval through the mid-day and then a couple in the late afternoon/evening.  Same routine as in Brandon ...

Chick is mostly on its own now in the tuppernest but one or the other of the parents have taken to sitting nearby on an object higher than the nest.  The adult is between the tuppernest and the outside world.   Chick hasn't decided to escape from the tuppernest yet, but that maybe because its not competing with anyone and Jules and Beau are still delivering to the box.  At the moment, it is sound asleep on its belly at the back of the tuppernest in a corner where there is lots of "cover".

Good. :-* I was wondering if it had much "cover" from the elements.

The chick may decide that he/she likes it there - although he/she won't get to meet many potential mates if he's an adult Peregrine living the the tuppernest depending on his parents for food.  ::)  lol

Hasn't quite been finalized, but end of this week, beginning of next.  Extra planning required for this one, but first we have to get all the players lined up!  :)

If we get a tornado...I don't think it will matter where anyone or anything is.  Hopefully it will just be rain and some thunder and lightening and a little wind if there needs to be any wind.

Chick hasn't even tried to leave the tuppernest yet and its almost banding age.
Hopefully it will be this prudent when it comes to fledging, solo chicks are notorious for fledging earlier than they should.

Maybe this break for freedom by the chick will be remembered as a big negative for this site next year when she is choosing where to lay eggs.

We are hoping we can get access in the next day or two to get our little solo chick banded.  Jules is very protective so its going to be a bit hairy alright, but he/she is safe at the moment and looks to have been developing nicely.  We tend not to be able to see the chick all the time, it likes to wander out of camera range!!

As for a transmitter, the chick is a candidate but it will depend when the time comes.  We have a very small window of age - they have to be big enough that they have their juvenile (brown) feathers on their backs and breasts so that the transmitter doesn't interfere with their growth but not so old that they are hanging out on the roof edge, we won't take the risk of any chicks fledging prematurely.  So not for at a couple of weeks if at all.  We will have to see what the WW chick is doing and where when s/he is old enough.

Checked out the WW site at 5:30. Both adults at the site. Spent a little extra time checking it out with my binoculars. Could not see the chick at all, that is probably a good thing, but could see the spy cam and a poop streak over the ledge edge. Came back to the site about 6:00, one adult still at the nest site and one on the wing :)

Little solo chick is doing fine, Jules and Beau are still wildly protective. We are now 2-3 weeks before fledging so the Brandon chicks should be all up and acrobatic before this little guy starts walking the edge of his ledge!  Whew, one fledging at a time!  :D

Yes, it does seem that there have been lots of chicks named "Solo", when they are the lone chick at the nestsite. The NSW chick at Charles Sturt U in Australia this past year was named "Solo". But "Polo" sounds like a great name, TPC, for all the reasons you have mentioned. :) And who knows, maybe he/she will become an explorer like Marco "Polo"? ;)

Good choice TPC. Isn't Polo a sport of the rich just like falconry is? I believe Prince William played Polo on his trip to north America last week so you could say the name Polo has a royal connection. :)

I know what you mean, susha. But Solo in NSW, Aust. did quite well this past year, even with an injured leg/foot and the parents did take very good care of him/her for quite awhile, long after he/she fledged. (She/he was never banded so I don't think they knew for certain if (s)he was male or female.) All this to say that Brooklyn & Hurricane seem to be good parents so I'm sure he/she will be okay, touch wood and talons crossed. :)

Little chick has been banded - his name is Polo and he's doing very well right now.  Dennis has some photos of the banding that he will be posting shortly, so you will all get to see him soon - he's cute.

At the time of banding we had to move him to another building nearby (not the 2010 site), as he has gotten bigger, it was more and more dangerous for him roaming around at the old site.  It was also making Jules crazy and she was starting to take some big risks when she thought he needed defending.  They made the move like pros and already the adults' behaviour has returned to the way it was last year which is more how it should be.  They are still relatively quiet for peregrines, don't know if Jules picked that up from Ivy (who is making Princess quieter than she was with Trey) or whether she's quieter naturally.  In any case, they are much more vocal now and much less stressed.  Hadn't seen Jules and Beau hanging out together at the same place for more than a month, now they are together more often than not now, which is good for their pair bond.

Polo has a nestbox to use or to get under if he prefers as well as lots of safe space to exercise his legs and wings, and opportunity he didn't have at the old site.  Didn't take him long to take the ramp down out of the nestbox and start running around, it reminded me of the Radisson chicks and their rain dances.  We have cameras mounted but like every site, we can't see everywhere on the roof and at the moment, he's tucked himself down out of site.  We don't have a microphone at this location either so I can't hear him though we can occasionally hear him from the ground but it depends on the wind and urban noises nearby.  I'm hoping we do in fact get some rain today and the heat/humidity drops some, I'm sure he'll come out to visit with his parents, one of whom is always stitting on the roof edge.

When Jules insisted on nesting where she did in 2009, I despaired of her common sense.  Watching her in 2010 I was impressed by how quick she picked up being a great mother.  This year I wondered about her common senses again but watching how quick she was to move with her chick, I realized that with a good nestsite she's a star, with a poor site she has to work too darn hard.  Hopefully next year she will choose from one of the two (hopefully soon three) sites we have for her in the West Winnipeg territory.

I have a strong feeling that TPC was at this site yesterday, the chick has been banded, maybe fitted with a transmitter and TPC, knowing the Radosson cam was watching Dollarama, thought she would make it possible to view the nest prior to announcing that the cams could/would be shut down on July 25th or sooner. Welcome to the Winnipeg Family Polo!!!  :-* :-* What a cutie patootie!!!  No fierce in that face yet!  ;)  Funny story... I was looking at the photos and clicked on the first one of Tracy holding Polo.  My immediate reaction was "Hey, there's 2 chicks, since when are there 2?!  And yet, one looks younger...".  I swear I thought there were 2 chicks until I realized one was the chick on Tracy's tshirt!  LOL.  I had to laugh at myself.  Silly, silly me!  Also noticed the date on the photos... last Tuesday eh?  Kept that little secret from us for awhile didn't 'ya?  I know, you had to wait to make sure the re-nest was OK.  I understand.  So, that makes 6 boys and only 1 girl for Wpg/Brandon.  Funny how it's skewed so much to boys... wonder why?

Little Polo has come out from under his overhang and is now hanging out in the shade on the north side of the roof.  For whatever reason, he likkes to hang out where the cam cables are attached, something to play with perhaps.  He was sleeping on them last night.  He isn't impressed with the humidity, he keeps finding wide open places to sprawl out to keep warm.  At the moment he's napping upright, I'm sure he'll sprawl soon though.  It would be great if we did have rain today, it would sure cool him off!

Polo the Solo is bored, he's been napping and now his playing/nibbling (more play, less nibble) on the cam cables.  Soon those instincts are going to be used to go after the local bird population!

Oh nuts, there he goes again ... little roadrunner, zip, poof, he's gone. And back again.  Got a little extra energy right now, flapping away, puffaloons blowing in the breeze he's making.  Suspect another sprawl is imminent.

I imagine Polo has changed a lot since banding day. Just looked at those photos again -- the one of him sprawled on his back in the bucket is priceless (all are good, of course, but that one makes me smile every time)! He sure won't look like the same fluffy ball of white running around the rooftop!

Polo has spent the afternoon napping in the shade where there is a bit of a breeze.  He's also had himself sort of propped up, or tilted or something I can't really describe but it does look as though he may be getting some breeze under his belly as well as over his back ... its hard to tell though as I'm looking straight down on him - he's right below the camera

Just got back from checking on Jules and Beau.  When we got there Jules was on the letter P. She sat there for a long time preening herself and then she moved to the U.  All of a sudden Beau came around the corner of the building and sat on R (I think).  They were sqwaking at each other for awhile and then Jules turned her back on Beau.  They kind of took turn flying around the building and then Jules landed on the corner and sat there for quite awhile.  Beau was still on the letters.  There was an truck there for some electric company and the two guys kept looking at us and finally their curiousity got the best of them and they had to come over and see what we were doing.  He asked if we were watching the planes coming in and then we would race to the airport to see who got there first.  We told him to look up and he says "your watching birds, what do you expect them to do"  We said fly and gave a brief bit of information.  I am sure he thought we were nuts as he walked away.  Oh well.

Generally banders tend to be consistent with which band they put on which leg.  We have two nests in relatively close proximity and in a month, all our chicks will be up and flying in basically the same air space.  When we are trying to identify who is who after everyone has fledged, knowing that Polo's black band is on his right leg can speed up the identification process.

Sorry, I was going to post early this morning, but work got in the way.
At 6:20 I saw Beau on the roof of the building and was so very lucky to see Jules playing in some thermals, circling and watching.
After 5 minutes I lost sight of her, but sure enough, as soon as I got going, I saw her on the same building, different corner. The two of them looked like majestic statues,

Guess who I saw tonight ;D ?  Hehe... yup, I saw Beau and Jules!  I was heading out to do some errands around 6pm so I made a very small detour to where I thought they might be and low and behold, there they both were sitting pretty as can be on the letters.  I'm not sure who's who, but one was on the S facing in towards the building while the other was on the R facing the other way.  They both looked like they were being buffeted pretty good by the wind! After a few minutes of watching (and one man coming up and asking me what I was doing) I headed off to complete my errands.  On my way back I took a different detour... same bird was still sitting on the S (I'm thinking it was Jules by size) and after looking around for a few minutes I happened to discover Beau (?) sitting on the corner of the building facing in... I'm fairly certain there was a little somebody  ;) on the roof below him and they were having a nice visit.  ;D

Little Polo is 37 days old and is currently napping on one of the sidepieces of the nestbox.  He's out of the wind for the most part and in the sunshine and looks very comfortable.   Jules is hanging out nearby, Beau was around a bit earlier and now is off-site or just perched out of camera range.

He's been up on the roof edges already and running about and since he's a solo, I expect he won't stay too long before he wants to follow after his parents.  Having said that, his parents are much more attentive than either the Brandon or Radisson parents - he's never gone more than a couple of hours without a parent 100ft or less from him.  Might make him hang around a bit longer, if one is around, he doesn't get as lonely as solos usually get.

Polo is doing the rain wing-dance.  He's perched on the corner of the roof of the nestobx getting soaking wet and playing with his wings in the rain.  I should not that he is facing directly into the wind so the air is blowing over and under his wings, flying without leaving home so to speak.  Mom is directly behind him, in direct alignment with the wind but smart enough to keep her wings in and her tail down.  AT the moment, both of them (and the camera) are really getting buffetted by the wind.  The rain is kinda diagonal right now, occasionally horizontal.  Going to be a wet couple of birdies shortly.  Will be interesting to see how long until he goes undercover ...

So, TPC, do you think that Jules and Beau are staying closer to Polo than the Brandons or Radissons because he's on his own or because that's just their nature?

Thanks susha, I was going to ask the same question.  Are they really that more attentive because there is only one chick?  I always saw at least one parent near the chicks in Brandon when I was watching.

Jules and Beau are staying closer because they had such a hard time of it earlier in the season.  They are much more relaxed now and behaving more like they did last summer but they still aren't going far from Polo, too much time spent protecting him to quite get out of the habit so quickly.  He's 38 days and looks very ready to go and here it is nearly 11am and Mom is sitting not 18 inches away from him.  They had breakfast together about 20 minutes ago and then she cleared her remains (he was till working on his) and then she came back.

He's napping on the platform at the front of the nestbox right now and Mom is still within him, watching the world go by.

It's a great picture -- Mom vigilantly watching over chick -- even if chick is about ready to leave the nest and fly. Is the roof relatively low, or does it just look like that in the picture? Whether Polo decides to take off today or wait another day or so, my fingers are crossed for safe flights in his future!

1704h

Its windy in West Winnipeg and Polo is napping on the shelf on his nestbox in the sun and mostly out of the wind.  This morning he was a crazy little boy bird playing with bits of meals in his nestbox (these birds are extremely neat this year) but for most of the day, he's been hanging out inside the box out of the sun.

Mom and Dad visited throughout the day, napping, watching, chatting with kid ... at the moment I suspect an after school snack is about to come in ... usually happens that way, kid is asleep, parents wake him up with food, kid can't get back to sleep and has delusions of flying ....  :o

Sad news this morning ....

Polo fledged last night just before we lost the light to the cameras.  He ended up on the Viscount Gort which is where we found him this morning.  He was on the lowest roof and Dennis and I were discussing what would be his best (aka safest) routes off the roof and he chose one that was not the safest.  He was okay until he tried to land on a decorative standard (like a light standard) and couldn't get a grip and fluttered down to the ground.  Had he landed on the median and stayed there for a minute or two we probably would have been able to get to him in time to prevent him from running afoul of the traffic.  Unfortunately, he didn't.  He fluttered down and into traffic and was clipped by a car that didn't have time to react it was that fast.  He died on impact.  Dennis and I got to him a minute or two later but it was too late.

This is the same kind of accident that Fyfe and Carson experienced and the kind that kills the most fledgling peregrines, a low roof and a poor choice.  For Fyfe it was a nearby building, for Carson it was luck he didn't hit hard enough to kill or paralyze himself and for Polo it was inexperience and a poor choice of direction.

Yesterday about 10:45 or so I was practicing Tai-Chi and looked out the window and saw a PF flying towards me with a meal in its mouth. It was coming from the direction of Assiniboine Park and Tuxedo Golf Course so it could possibly be the one I saw in the park a week or two ago. It was quite low and I thought it may have been going to land on St. Demitrios Church.

Early Monday morning I went by the nest site. I saw Beau on the north-east corner, Jules and Polo on the north-west. I sat and watched them for a bit and saw Polo do some wingersizing which annoyed Jules. She flew to the south-west corner and , that's the picture that is imprinted in my head and will never leave. 3 beautiful falcons standing sentinel over their domain.

Today I saw Beau on the north-east corner, no sign of Jules.

It was a lonely sight.

How disappointing.  How quickly the excitement turns to sorrow.  From witnessing a successful fledge to only watch it end in tragedy.
Beau and Jules will continue to guard their domain and circle their sky.  Perhaps next year, we will watch their chicks fly!
:)  Very Poetic Allikat.  So very poignant.
Thank you newchick!
Sweet words Allikat, and what we all hope for next year. Thank you

Actually, not as much as I worried they might.  Could be because they were there with Dennis and I when Polo died.  They have been at the nestsite but only occasionally have they visited the nestbox, which is interesting as this is where Polo spent most of the day out of the sun and where they usually found him.  What is a good sign is that Beau has been more successful in his efforts/desire to pair-bond with Jules than Ivy has been (so far) with Princess.  And by good, I mean positive and hopeful.  Jules and Beau have had a hugely stressful year this year, much worse than any of our other pairs ever.  It is a hopeful sign to see them interacting like this and that they will have time to recover before heading off on migration in the fall.

I am relieved and very glad to hear this. I was worried that they may become discouraged and give up on each other. Do pairs ever remain together during the migration period, TPC?

Hard to know, getting one band number on migration is a rare event, getting two is not something I've ever gotten I'm afraid.  But its possible someone, somewhere has.

Well, I suppose the only way to know for sure, would be with tracking devices as are on Rain & Rosser in Brandon. But I don't imagine there have ever been adult pairs, each with a tracking device on. Now that would certainly make for an interesting study, I would think.

She might have nibbled through a strap on the backpack, the strap material might have failed or it might have been put on too loosely and she was able to get out of it if the strap material stretched a bit.  (think dog-harness on a small dog, they wiggle out of those easier than you think unless they are done up "properly")

Nothing is every perfectly secure - at least one of our peregrines managed to get a band off - metal with two rivets (before my time, but I've seen the photos).

No, we can't put the nestbox back out until the work is finished.  And the work is continuing, it's just taking a long, long time.  Originally I heard it would only be for a year, now I've heard anecdotally that it will take longer than a year.  I hope to find out more information from management when I talk to them later in the summer.

Actually we have never observed any of them (adults or chicks) paying any additional attention to their bands.  We see them cleaning their feet all the time and the feathers along their legs and occasionally see them cleaning "bits" out from under their bands.  When we catch banded birds, their legs and feet are clean and fine.

Must be something like us with glasses or contact lenses -- or dentures -- or anything like that -- foreign bodies at first, but very quickly we become accustomed to them and never think of them. And, of course, they're banded so young.

Last I heard the 2010 location would still be having external repairs, but that was a couple of months ago and I noticed a few days ago that there is a second "lift" working so perhaps they will be done sooner than we thought.  But I still don't know if that will be in time for next year.  And we are going to see about ensuring that Jules can't go back to her 2011 site to nest - to visit after she's nested will be fine, but not to nest ...

As for alternate sites, where we moved Polo too will hopefully be a possibility for them, both the adults have been to/in the box over the summer, Jules was there a couple of days ago (sitting beside it, not in it) and it would make a great site.  We have been eye-balling another possibility but we will need to talk to the management company but it's a possibility, even if just for the short-term until we can (hopefully) get back on the 2010 site.

Ultimately, it will all be decided upon by the birds - either they will use the site or find somewhere else.

That sounds like the black/green banded female who's been at the Radisson - the one I think is Sandy (she's not cooperating to confirm its still her).  Her breast right now has this rusty coloured wash over the white feathers, makes it look a light brown, though oatmealy is actually more accurate!
