Title: West Winnipeg - 2009 / Ivy & Jules
Post by: The Peregrine Chick on April 06, 2009, 12:59
At the end of last week as I was going home, what should I spot? (yes, its rhetorical) There on one of the West Winnipeg pair's favourite perches were two large dark birds.  Unfortunately I didn't get a really good look at them, but usually doesn't take much for me. But erring on the side of caution (you know me, Ms Spontaneous Project Coordinator), I mentionned it to Dennis and the two of us have been keeping our eyes on all their favourite buildings ever since.

So while I have been inside working today, Dennis happened to going past one of the buildings during the course of his work and he looked up (can't think why  ::)) and lo and behold, there were two peregrines on the corner of another of their favourite buildings.  Hopefully these are them back for the summer rather than migration tourists.  This building is very (very) popular with migrating birds, great location, great hunting, great nap perches and far enough away from the Radisson birds that there isn't any territorial misunderstandings.

Dennis & I will be keeping an eye on these birds and the buildings to see what transpires.  We will of course  ;) keep you all informed!

Wow, how great is this!  Why is it that the Winnipeg birds return earlier than the Edmonton birds?  And....if I remember correctly you don't share with us where the west-Winnipeg birds are??  Do they have a nest?  Have they ever used it?  Should I do my own reasearch perhaps??   ;)

i think the west is kept secret because of it's location .yes?   i remember last year no one would say, so I assumed it must be on an apartment block ..or somewhere people wouldn't want to be bothered with crazy peregrin people milling about.

Below is a quote from one of Tracy's posts last year.  I'm not sure how to change the color for this thing so we'll see once I post if it worked.  Otherwise here's what she said.  Doesn't mention the success of any eggs/hatchlings.

Quote
Not going to tell you I'm afraid.  The problem is that the birds are hanging out on some buildings that are perfect for them but their presence is not always so easy for building management or building occupants.  Also, if it is Lucy and Ivy or one of them with someone new, they are a new pair and so far the track record in this part of town has not been great.  What is great is the location and the willingness of the people involved to welcome the birds and all the necessary "baggage" that comes with them.  So, in order to give the birds and the people a break, we are keeping the locations anonymous for the time being.  Will happily keep everyone informed on the birds' and their maybe babies progress though!

While I would love to share everything about all of our birds with everyone, the peregrines, their safety and the recovery effort take precedence.  I hope everyone understands the reasons for the Project's decision, even if you don't necessarily agree with the decision.

I've seen them!
I also won't say anything as it's private  :-X
Sorry everyone.. I just find it absolutely wonderful that we have more than one pair of fabulous falcons in Winnipeg.
Maybe this year will bring more chicks in our mix   :D

To Trey & Princess......ahem ~ NEST ON THE WEST!

No we aren't divulging where the birds are hanging out, not because we don't want to share but because it makes it difficult for the building managers to do their jobs.  If the birds decide to nest and if the building management & occupants don't have a problem become a focus of potentially intense public attention (which includes things like increased security and safety), then I will reconsider the Project's decision.

Safety of the birds , always first.  and of course the privacy of the building they occupy.

someone asked why your birds are returning and not Edmontons, yet.  we are further North and it depends where they winter.
that could be one reason.

Well said, T.  I, for one, will not try to figure it out.

I don't know why our birds are back faster, but I think the fact that they didn't successfully raise chicks last year may well have something to do with it.  I'm inclined to think that they were early returners and were on this side of the bands of snowstorms that pummelled Minnesota and the Dakotas (and southern Manitoba) and that they surfed their way into town right before they hit us here.  We have seen transmittered birds stall when they hit storms so there is no way that Trey and Princess flew through them.

I have been keeping an eye on the hawkwatch results and there have been almost no peregrine sightings report - well there have been some but there have probably been 50x more kestrels and many more merlins than peregrines.  And we know that there are peregrines nesting (in some cases lots nesting) where these hawkwatches are located.

Trey and Princess were back early - and since they haven't nested yet, it looks like they may have taken a break before getting down to the business of courting, but time will tell if that is right.  If they lay their first egg about the 18th, then they will be nesting pretty much as per the norm.  I would be getting concerned that the birds weren't going to return if we didn't see anything by early May.  We have had them nest later - and Radisson in Edmonton did nest later last year - so we are far from running out of time!

Okey, dokey.  Today (Easter Sunday) was a banner day for the WW birds.  Its a pair, same as last year.  Male is Ivy, Trey's son from the 2005 hatch from the nestbox on the Radisson.  He has been coming back to the City every year since he hatched.  In 2006 he nested unsuccessfully with his sister Lucy in WW.  The following year he hooked up with a different female but we could never get her band number - heck we could never get close enough to either of them to be absolutely positive in 2007!  In 2008 however Ivy returned after Princess and came to visit her at the Radisson, Trey "escorted" him out when he (Trey) returned a few days later.  This morning I was able to read his band clearly and its him.  The female will be a mystery, maybe for good, maybe just for awhile.  She doesnt' have bands per se.  She has a breeder's band or ringband on her right leg and nothing on her other leg.  Saw her here last year and got a very good look at her feet today.  Unfortunately, the only way we might be able to identify her is if we get very close AND if there are some identifying numbers on her band.  Something to look forward to.

And no, you guys don't get to name her.  We need to figure out her personality some before we start to narrow down our options.  If we find out she had a name we can hyphenate it later on.

You know this is the second time in the past few weeks, I've read about a falcon on a nest possibly being a breeders bird.  I can't remember the other place I read about it but it was somewhere in the US and was a female as well.  I know this will sound awful but all I could think was 'yay, she escaped and she's free to soar the skies now'..!

Glad to hear about Ivy too... :D

Okay, still not telling you where the birds are nesting in West Winnipeg, so in order to tell you stories, I am giving landmarks (man-made structures of all  sorts) other names which I will use consistently from here on in.  There are three in this story  - The Diner, The Bed & Breakfast (The B&B) & The Bleachers ....

So the day started with Dennis giving me a call to let me know that there was a peregrine at The Diner.  We chatted, I mentionned I was thinking of taking my spotting scope to try and read band numbers (The Dinner is high but has nice clear angles for reading bands) even though the light was very flat - makes it hard to photograph and to use scopes for detailled work.  I got ready and was about to head out the door when Dennis called again to say that in fact both birds were there and good luck since he was off to photograph Great Horned Owls.

I arrived at The Diner about 10 minutes later and both birds were still there (not a foregone conclusion, they do have wings and know how to use them) so I parked and thought about the best location for viewing since it was quite cold and the south breeze was too brisk to be at all warm.  Suddenly both birds took off from the The Diner and headed off to The Bleachers and started some wonderful courtship flights and I just parked my butt on the hood of my car and watched them.  After a minute or two I decided to call Dennis to see what he was up to since this is exactly the kind of thing he photographs well - even though the light conditions sucked.  Dennis abandonned his owls and got back to The Diner about 4 minutes after the most picture perfect ... umm, snuggle ... took place.  I felt terrible but had to tell him if only because chances are we would get another chance to photograph it if we waited.  So the Ivy and his lady took up positions on opposite corners of The Diner and Dennis and I settled in to wait.  I was rewarded about 10 minutes later when I got a look at her feet and was able to confirm the ringband and Dennis was rewarded another 10-15 minutes later when more snuggling occurred.  Now young Ivy is a cute little bird - he has features of his Dad (Trey) and features of his Mom (Princess).  He has a fuller darker cap than he used to but I couldn't see if he still has some of the lighter coloured features (from Princess) on his crown.  He has darker banding on his breast and belly - definitely from Princess.  Nice white chest though - again Trey's, but I couldn't really see if any of Princess' speckles are still there.  I hope not, but I'm biased.  :D

Anyway, back to the story ... Ivy is a clever little darling too, he had food stashed away and he went to his pantry on The Diner and brought back a treat for the female.  It was amazing to see them side by side because she is a large female and he looks to be on the smaller side for a male - in other words, large size difference! Lots of talking and then they both retired to their corners - she with her lunch, him with a great deal of satisfaction.  Another bout of copulation then they both took off to The Bed & Breakfast and we were just able to see there with our binoculars and spotting scope.  Were glad about that since The B&B is where the nestbox is and where the pair of them spent most of last summer.

Dennis and I decided to follow them over there but shortly after we arrived they headed back to The Diner again.  We naturally followed, and glad we were that we did.  They were both back there and we watched another bout of gift-giving, some more copulation, then they moved over to The Bleachers again.  The landed on The Bleachers and just as Dennis & I were hopping into our vehicle to follow, I heard & saw another peregrine zip by in the opposite direction.  Just as we were on our way a merlin bombed through and though I was sure I had heard a peregrine I wondered if maybe the wind had screwed up the sound and I'd been wrong.  So we arrived at The Bleachers and both Ivy and his lady were perched out of the wind but a bit closer to the ground and I was able to confirm his band number right before he bolted back toward The Diner and that is when I spotted the third peregrine.  The female then bolted from The Bleachers to join the melee and by size we realized that the new bird was a female and the battle was on!  The two females dove and hit one another and began flying and fighting their way back toward The Bleachers with Ivy pitching in.  Gave us an opportunity to get a great look at them as they came back past us again.  We hoped that they would come around The Bleachers again, but no such luck.  It got quiet, then the female returned and was none too pleased with our presence on the ground and she was making some quiet, but seriously defensive flights about 40-60 feet over our heads.  Ivy arrived after a few more minutes and rocketed through not much higher before they both returned to The Diner and then both headed off in the direction of The B&B.  And that's when we lost them.

He's promised to make me a CD of them and then we can post them on our gallery and I'm sure he will be posting them on his gallery as well!  Will be sure to leave a post here when they are up and ready for viewing!

Nuts, now I actually have to MAKE a new gallery for these birds  ;D

The birds haven't started nesting yet and there was not attempt to take over the territory, just seemed like a peregrine passing through, or perhaps even Princess being informed that the real estated had been sold so to speak.  There was alot of flying, flipping and yelling and then Ivy and the female were back no fuss.

April 2009

Our resident male is Ivy, a 2005 wild-hatch from the Radisson Hotel.  His parents are Trey & Princess.  His female sibling was named "Lucy" and his male sibling was not named that year.  The female is not named as yet as she has a breeder's ringband which can't be read unless one is very very (6 inches away) close.  We hope as they settle to nest that we may get an opportunity to get a closer look at her bands and maybe find out who she is.

Interesting -- this year it was Ivy escorting mum out of the house, not Trey escorting Ivy!

As for

Maybe not, but it sure sounds like there's a lot of "makin' whoopie" going on! :D  It won't be long before she's decorating the house.

WOW TPC...what a day! Great explanations on everything!

First, I'll start off by writing, I really don't want territorial battles to happen.  I know, I know, it's nature, but I hate it when one gets hurt (especially hearing about Mariah today  :'().
Hard to believe that last year, Ivy was escorted out by Trey from their territory, and this year, Ivy and his mate are settling in quite nicely....and Ivy's mate doing some impressive aerial acrobatics to show this intruder she means business....what a year this will be.  I will make sure to keep my eyes and ears open as I live in West Winnipeg!  Yay for me...I live here and pass through downtown everyday.  Just can't get enough of our peregrines!   ::)
Question to you TPC...
Since we know Trey & Princess' nesting site and roosting sites...if you were to outline a radius of that territory and have the center of that radius at the Radisson, where does it stop?  Just curious...

Territories aren't circular so radius isn't a good descriptor, particularly in urban centres where some landuses are ignored so to speak when it comes to determining territory sizes.  And territories aren't of equal size, its all dependent on what is in a territory and how much food is available.  The Winnipeg birds are very firm about their territorial boundaries but seem to be not particularly murderous in territorial defense/conflict/take-overs.  As far as we know, we have never had a death or major injury due to territorial clashes in Winnipeg.  The only female to be usurped was seen months later & the following year.

About the Radisson territory - it appears to run south to about McGillivray and north to wherever.  Don't know exactly about the eastern boundary as the birds don't travel that way too often and there is no pair there to enforce the line.  But I do know where the western edge is ...  ;)

That would be the Nest in the West, as opposed to NEST ON THE WEST!
I can't guess about the north and east, but any chance the southern limit has to do with Fort Whyte?

Nope, southern limit has to do with the U of M territory.  T-Rex used to hold the U of M one when his Dad (Pop) held the Radisson territory.  Found them one day sitting near to each other on the Royal Bank at McGillivray and Pembina Highway.  Only time I saw them near one another after 1989 when T-Rex hatched.  In 1995 when Pop disappeared while Madame (his second mate) was incubating T-Rex turned up a day later and started feeding Madame and incubating her eggs.  It should be said that T-Rex and Madame were together (not nesting) for a year at the U of M before she moved into the Radisson territory when Maud died after collided with a high-tension wire - don't know whether that previous relationship was the reason Madame didn't abandon Pop's eggs and/or T-Rex adopted them but it is what happened.

Oh, and the U of M territory?  It hasn't been occupied since Trey left thought we do keep hoping.

So there is a possibility that Winnipeg could handle a couple more pairs of peregrines - one pair south terrritory and one pair in north/east territory - if there were enough food for all.

So I went for a little walk this afternoon to confirm my suspicions about where the West Winnipeg pair are hanging out.  :-X  And don't worry folks I didn't go near the buildings, wouldn't want to ruin a budding romance.  Now here is the funny part.  I realized when I got home that I can actually see the tops of these buildings from my back door.  ACK! They have been so close for years and I haven't managed to see them.   ::)  Until the leaves come out I will be keeping a distant eye out.

Not quite that easy, there are habitat requirements besides the amount of food.  Need to have the food they like/prefer in abundant supplies on their doorsteps, as you leave the downtown, that (pigeons) decreases.  As you go west, you still have the river but also the airport and water treatment plants.  Down south its pigeons supplemented heavily by seagull.  As you go north, there is nothing but Oak Hammock Marsh.  As you go east, you haven't really got anything.  And the peregrines will only nest a certain distance from a waterbody and in this City, that's either the Red River or the Assiniboine River.  The rest are too small.  And you have to have high buildings with suitable surrounding buildings/natural features for all the things a nesting peregrine needs.  Think of the Radisson, they hang out on the Sterling, Paris & Richardson Buildings in particular, they hunt over the exchange district and they cruise along the Red River for prey.  Not many other places in town that meet those needs AND appeal to peregrines.

Had a pair there one year, but they were too close to the Radisson and they lost their eggs.  They moved to Legislature the next year and it was still too close - they managed to raise chicks but it got a little hairy at times figuring out if everyone would fledge safely.  That was the year Trey was hatched from the nestledge and may explain why T-Rex and Madame used the nestledge that year - they wanted to be out of sight of the Legislature Birds.  Also had one on the St Boniface Basilica the following year - the female was T-Rex's first mate and she followed him downtown then hooked up with a young male from Brandon but the building was too low and it was exceedingly stressful for her as Madame used to buzz her location and the Basilica bells rang frequently (not just hourly) each day that summer.  She and Trey hung out there the next year but she was content to just roost as no courting/nesting behaviour/attempts were observed.  Basically, just too darn close and the Radisson pairs are the dominant pair in Winnipeg.

What an incredible gallery of photos Dennis.  ;D  Ivy is certainly a very handsome young fellow, just like his rockstar dad.
The photos of the encounter between the three adults are amazing.  I don't know how you managed it, given the speed at which all of this happened.  8)

Ivy and his female were playing at the B&B today.  Dennis and I tried to sneak onto the roof to check the box without them noticing but no such luck.  They are defensive of the nestbox (a great thing) and there is a nice scrape in the gravel - looks perfect for a clutch of 4 eggs.  Nothing yet, but we will be keeping a close eye on the site.

Dennis did manage to snap some photos, but they were flying very fast (but close) and the light was flat which makes detailed photos difficult to capture.  You may or may not have new Dennis photos to see shortly but I have a photo or two of the scrape, but I'm not sure how "viewer-friendly" they are but I'm sure I'll post them in the next couple of days.

To help you ID the West End Birds other than by size when seen together. Jewel (female) being larger and the thin Breeders Band that can not always be seen. She has more yellow around the eyes towards her beak. As well her beak seems more yellow than Ivy's...perhaps a breeding time thing ?? Perhaps Tracy could fill us in on that.
I'm only able to see this after looking at photos.

Great shots Dennis...I love the ones where the falcon is "dropping" off the railing.  They truly are magnificent!

Any word or idea who the intruder was??  Hopefully just a falcon passing through and only made Winnipeg a rest spot.

Peregrines pass by here all the time on their way to the marshes and lakes north and west of here - very popular places with non-breeding (too young, too old or no mate yet) birds.  Hang out at Oak Hammock Marsh in a couple of months and you will probably see a peregrine there on any given day - sometimes even "ours".  T-Rex, Trey's Dad, was seen out there quite frequently during the breeding season - off shopping for the incubating Madame ...

As for the interloper, haven't had any reports of injured/dead peregrines recently and haven't had any other sightings.  If we do, no worries, I'll post them!

Just went and checked my dates, Hurricane was spotted at the Smiley Tower in Grand Forks on April 8th and that was the only day they saw him.  Dennis and I saw the interloper buzz through on the 12th but it was the same size as our new female so I don't think it was Hurricane.  But the timing could have worked ....

I will of course let you all know what/if anything I hear about either the interloper (probably just a tourist) and Hurricane.

Okay, I have decided (unilaterally) on a name for the female in West Winnipeg.  The name follows the usual convoluted logic that usually applies to names of our birds.

Female has a one ring band rather than the kind of bands we put on the chicks, its the kind of band I have only ever seen used by breeders or by falconers, so it could be that she decided she wanted the wide open skies more than she wanted guaranteed food and shelter.  In any case, unless we can get a very up-close (< 12 inches) look at her band
AND if the band has markings, we won't be able to tell who she is or when/where she came from.

So, here is the stream of consciousness that named our newest female ...

... ring-band -- ring -- diamond ring - diamond - gem - gem is too cute name for carnivorous peregrine -- (back one step) -- diamond -- jewel -- jewel also too cute name a name for screaming, whacking, protective mama bird -- (back one step) -- diamond -- ruby -- emerald -- (way too cute names, back stepping again) -- diamond -- jewel (again) -- Jewel & Ivy -- (good rhythm) -- Ivy & Jewel -- (female bird has boat loads of personality from what I've seen so far, needs a good name) -- Jewel -- (still can't twitch when I type name) -- Jewel -- (spelling change like Trey and Ivy's names perhaps?) -- Jewel -- Julie -- (ack, 'nuff said) -- Jewel -- Jule -- (better) -- Ivy & Jule -- (not there yet, still too cute) -- Ivy & Jules -- (like that) ...  Jules & Ivy .. (works that way too) ...

Ladies, Gentlemen & Phanatics ... I am pleased to introduce our newest, hopefully soon to be nesting in West Winnipeg, peregrine pair ... Ivy and Jules.

And if we do manage to find out who she is/was in her previous life, we can give her a hyphenated name or she can be "Jules, the peregrine formerly known as <insert former incarnation's name here>".  Seems to me though that if she was a breeding or falconry bird, this may be a new life or the resumption of a previous life, both of which are deserving of a "new" name.

This comes under the heading of - just when you are not looking for them - I saw Ivy this afternoon.  I was out shopping and saw a very familiar looking building (thanks Dennis) with what looked like a stuffed animal on a balcony rail midway up.  I had my binoculars in my backpack and whoa, there was the little rockstar himself looking every bit as handsome as his dad.  He was probably either having a midafternoon siesta or else watching for a pigeon to come by.  There is a plentiful supply in the neighbourhood.  I didn't hang around even though I was in a public parking lot, because it seemed a little like invasion of privacy, for the people there I mean. It is different for the Project people to be documenting them.   I am sure that Ivy and Jules don't care, afterall they were doing the wild thing in one of the most public locations in the city.  :D
Great name by the way Tracy.  And yes, I had the wrong set of buildings the other week although they fit the criteria, plus falcons had visited in the past and a falcon did fly by when I was in the vicinity. C'est la vie. :D

On my way home today, I thought I saw a falcon trying to hunt a sea gull.  There was some pretty fancy flying happening and some stooping.  All I saw was a falcon and lots of gulls scatter  8)

Don't worry...I decided to pull into a parking lot to watch all of this unfold  :P

Oh, they like gull, some birds more than others and some nestsites more than others.  At the Radisson we get more shorebird remains, same at the Diner in West Winnipeg.  At the U of M however, we were hip deep in gull parts when the birds nested there - it was just a couple of minutes from the bend in the Red by St Norbert where the gulls congregate so they were like the pigeons downtown.  When we had birds hanging out more regularly on the Legislature, we used to find, almost exclusively, the wings from blue and green winged teal (a smallish duck).

Glad to hear you pulled over Allikat!!  :D

It's a great building Ballywing. We just moved here a little over 2 years ago and they gutted and redid the place to our specs. Till the new Hydro came along, we had the greenest one in Wpg. Even our water is collected from rain and then filtered and used throughout the building.
The neighbourhood can be a little rough, but everything is a tradeoff.

Our 'tower' birds here in mississauga at the St Lawrence plant live on seagulls ( being right beside Lake Ontario).  the guy who i talk to there told me that they are forever wiping seagull heads off their cars ( must not taste good.. or too crunchy) and finding corpses in the lots under the silos.  (yum)..

Could be anywhere between the Hydro Building (two blocks west of the Radisson) and Headingley .. and north/south to the Perimeter Highway.  And no, not going to be more specific.  Don't fret about the exact location folks - build a territory in your mind with three locations in it - The Diner, The Bleachers and The B&B.  Most folks online aren't in Winnipeg so this is exactly how they are envisioning our discussions of the Radisson territory downtown.  And keep in mind that the peregrines' environment doesn't look like our environment even though they occupy the same footprint.  So create the territory in your head and then add detail as the peregrines' story unfolds and as we are able to get decent photos.  Since peregrines aren't that easy to see even when you know where they are/will be, this may in fact be a much more fulfilling way of following along on their adventures.

Between 4 & 7 pm is a pretty good time...just look at the usual spots.  If you happen to see a lot of sea gulls around..or scattering around, you just might see falcon doing some fancy flying trying to catch lunch/dinner.

Not sure if you can go down in the morning hours, but I always seem to luck out!  I pass by around 7:30am and there is usually one perched on the building or the sign of the building!

For a second I had a vision of the volunteers wearing jackets and sweatshirts with Fledge Watch written on them.  Then I reread the comment and understood.  Might be a cool idea, though probably not in the neighbour hood where the nest is a secret!

Wonderful photos as usual Dennis.  They are so clear and show so much detail.  Thanks.  I think I have figured out were the West Pair are.  I need to make time to go there find a place to park and watch.  Hopefully I will finally see a Peregrine in real life.

No where near the west, I'm talking downtown. And you could sport almost any type of clothing and nobody would bat an eye.
The west is safe from publicity. Up to Tracy to spill the beans on that location :-X :-X

Sorry, little busy yesterday, couldn't get online at all, so I'll try to answer questions that have come up recently ....

First is, if you have or think you have figured out where the West Winnipeg birds are, keep it to yourself - that includes on posts, private messages and emails.  The last I know I have no control over, but my not naming the location has nothing whatsoever with making this a contest or a game.  I chose names that were descriptive of the structures' purpose for the peregrines so that it would help you all to develop a mental image of this pair's life and activities.  You are all so familiar with Trey & Princess' life that with photos and reports, I hope to be able to keep you all up to date on the pair's activities even though I can't bring them to you via webcam or take you all for a guided tour.  It is a question of the birds' security and the privacy of the occupants of all the buildings/structures involved.  I'm not saying all this to be mean to those of you who haven't or won't get the opportunity to see the WW birds, I wish I could share everything as we have done at the Radisson but every location has its own set of circumstances and until/if the situation changes, this is the way we are handling the WW peregrines.  Keep in mind that I could have been even less accommodating about where this pair, and I am very good at keeping some things off the radar until/unless necessary and only then if it is in the best interest of the birds.

Now having read the riot act, I will let you know that I will see what I can do about making the site more public but that part isn't my decision.  Depending on what we can do, we may be able to bring you some video of the birds nesting etc on a regular basis but we are working on that and it is by no means a certainty.  Heck we don't even know if/where they are going to nest yet so we are getting ahead of ourselves here.

did they install a nest box for the newlyweds?
There is a nestbox on the best structure in the area (The B&B) and they have made a scrape in it which is promising, but no guarantee as we have seen at the Radisson over the last 2 years!  They have been hanging out alot on The Bleachers and The Diner but neither of those locations are optimal for nesting so we don't have boxes there.  Depending on them this year, that may change however ... we will just have to see ...

ok, I asked tpc about fledge watch and what I should do if... She's pretty busy right now, but your reference to towels, jackets etc. seem like a good idea. I'm there early 5:30 to 6:oo am, so any tips you could give me would be great.

We don't even have eggs yet so I don't tempt fate talking about fledging which won't happen until the end of July or early August ... but when we get to banding (~ 3 weeks after hatching - so if they laid today, 7-8 weeks from now) we can really get rolling on plans ... and yes, they can include "gear"  ;)

I also wanted to ask her how man nestbox's we have in the city...
We had more, only a couple now as we are in the process of replacing them at the moment.  Costs money and the buildings in a territory change (new buildings, additions, etc) so when our boxes got "old" they were removed and we are updating them.  Box locations aren't random, they need to have certain conditions and support the core (nest area) of the pair's territory - we don't want nests that are too far away to be considered by a pair but which might attract an additional pair in which case we are encouraging the potential for territorial disputes.  I have one more territory in the City I'm working on this year.  It hasn't been visited in 10 years, but as more of our young birds are returning maybe we can get a bit ahead of the next return.  More on that as we go along ...

No no..the open invitation, so to speak, fledge watch was for our downtown pair.  I respect the fact the WW's location is secret.

For our non-Winnipeg viewers, Winnipeg isn't that big in actual fact.  From every nestsite used in this City, you can see the other sites without optical assistance in fact.  There is a building, not quite in the middle of the city that I might be able to get a 360 degree panoramic view of this year ... that might give folks a better sense of the size of the city and how big/not big the territories actually are ...

.. may have to talk to Dennis ....

0800 hrs (local) - both Jules & Ivy are on the bleachers again - they like to go hunting from there and it was 2nd breakfast time (first breakfast is about 6 am at this time of the year).

Since both are still around, they may not quite yet be ready to lay.  Will see if I can't make the 'rounds in the next day or two to see if we have any good news to report ... one location may have to wait until the weekend though ...

1130 hrs (local) - Dennis was passing by the Bleachers and spotted who he thought was Jules but no Ivy.  He has photos and will be processing them this evening so he askes that we don't quote him on the identity until he has had a chance to check the images.

On this same subject, Dennis and I are working to figure out the quick and easy field mark differences between Jules and Ivy so that they are easier to identify at a distance or from any angle.  When we have it worked out, I will post images on the portrait gallery with the differences identified below.  Ivy has changed some since we saw him last year and the year before, he looks much more like his Dad (hallelujah!)

Hopefully we will find eggs for them in the next week - that would seem to be about the schedule.  Even if we don't we will keep looking until its well past the time for eggs. Over the last couple of days, I have mostly just seen 1 bird at a time, which might indicate that calm before incubating but until we find eggs, its all supposition.  This pair last year never did produce eggs, so we are keeping our fingers crossed that perhaps the female was just a bit too young last year.  Wait and see, wait and see .... From the Peregrine Chick - I will shortly be scooping up all "how do I" comments from the Observation threads and putting them in the "How do I" thread on the Forum Board.

It still does not work for me. Never has. Frustrated here.!!!!

Dennis & I pay for space on pbase for our photos so mostly they are recompressed to save space and are about 600 x 400 pixels.  If you open one of the photos, under it there will be the photo's date & the photographer's name, then the title and description below that, then "other sizes: small, medium, large*, original".  On my gallery, whatever size is in white is the size you are looking at - if there are larger sizes (in gold on my gallery) click on them to see a larger image.

If you are still having problems Bev, do a screen print of our screen at the point where you can't get the photos any larger and email it to me and I can tell you whether you are seeing the full-sized photo or not.

* the large may be missing if the original photo is less than pbase's pre-defined dimensions for "large"

Dennis and I chased the little darlings around West Winnipeg for more than a couple of hours yesterday.  They weren't in any the spots we expected and in all spots we had hoped against. The Winnipeg peregrines (all of them) owe me big time this year.  On Friday both birds were together so we knew they hadn't started incubating but perhaps they had started laying.  On Saturday, we watched and watched and watched, in part because the watching was so good, cool but not fridgid (nice change), breeze not windy (nice change), sunny not overcast (very nice change for Dennis) and with clear sight lines (very nice for all of us).  Jules really is one of the prettier females we have had in the province.  Anywho, Ivy came through briefly before bombing off to who knows where to kill who knows what - no other reason for that kind of departure.  And Jules stopped, dropped and rolled out of sight and was gone until after we left.  Sooooo, it looks like she's at the very least laying, perhaps starting to incubate.  That puts the West Winnipeg birds 10 days/2 weeks behind the Radisson birds as a guestimate.  Now we have to get access to the site, confirm a nest, scope out access & options then plan, plan, plan.

We will of course keep you all updated and if we go public with the location, you all will be the first to hear.  And I'll be adding some of Dennis' photos to our gallery along with an ID guide as soon as I can.

Okay, I'm a bit late with this, meant to post today but didn't have computer access until now.  Here's the latest ... Jules and Ivy are nesting not anywhere we wanted them to.  But they are in the drivers' seats and they have chosen a less than perfect location.  Not a problem for us like Trey's & Princess' location, just not ideal for incubating eggs/brooding young chicks.  But they have three eggs as of yesterday and so far, so good.  They are out of the weather so no worries there.

We are planning to help the birds out a bit with their nest so hopefully that will improve their odds of hatching out their eggs.  We don't have all the details worked out yet, these things take time to organize but I will let you know what we plan to do and how it goes, no worries.  Photos too as we have them.

Last note - we officially will NOT be publicizing the location of this nestsite.  This is primarily to ensure the safety of the peregrines and their chicks.  As I mentionned, this is not an ideal nest location and we don't intend to make it any more difficult for the peregrines.  We will make every effort to provide you all with updates and photos but this is as much as we can do this year.

That's not why I'm shouting Dennis  ;D  Actually Dennis wanders off and I keep wondering what the heck he's up to then he wanders back with his camera around his neck and a little smile on his face.  Then some time between 24-48 hours later I find a little CD in my mailbox ...

Sorry Mother Hen, missed your question ... Ivy is a 2005 hatch of Trey and Princess at the Radisson.  He wasn't seen anywhere in 2006 but then returned in 2007 and nested (unsuccessfully - 3 eggs) with Lucy his sister (same year) in the West Winnipeg area.  In 2008, he was back again but with a new female, Jules, but they didn't initiate nesting just hung out in the same territory all summer.  This year Ivy and Jules are back again and they have 3 eggs as of last Monday.  Estimated hatch date is the end of May.  We are going to try to improve their site a bit in the next week as their current site doesn't make incubation easy for them.  But more on that after its done  ;D

0800 hrs (local) - both Ivy and Jules were sitting on the railing by the nest.  Hopefully this is just shift-change behaviour because they need to be seriously sitting on these eggs at this point.  They can't keep hopping on and off or their eggs are going to bake.  I'm hoping its just because its morning and activity and that they get back on the eggs for the day.  That shouldn't hurt the eggs.  Will keep you all up-to-date.

Post by: allikat on May 11, 2009, 19:36
Not sure.
There have nested in a covered spot (I believe that's correct), but I think kinda forgot that they needed to be able to easily incubate their clutch..don't think that happened.  TPC has somethin' up her wing   :P

Post by: The Peregrine Chick on May 11, 2009, 21:46
These little dipsticks have chosen a location where they are easily spooked - they are both very quiet birds (that may change if they manage to hatch their eggs) and Jules is much more skittish than Ivy.  He's more willing/able to stick it out.  They would have started to incubate with egg number three they just aren't as stick-to-it as Trey and Princess.  Not unusual for young/inexperienced parents and yes, we have plans to perhaps help them out a bit this week.  Not sure that it will work but its at least an idea that might make it easier for them to do get into the groove.  Since Dennis will be there, you can be sure there will be photos  :D

I have no idea Ballywing, I think its just to make up for our abbreviated year last year.  Still don't know what the Brandon birds are doing - last week they hadn't shown signs of settling down yet but our man in Brandon will get back to me when he has news.  As for the WW birds, no idea, even they should know that their current location is not ideal.  As for Trey & Princess, I think its because they think I need some excitement in my life - using the penthouse condo would have been way to easy  ::)

hopefully your plan will help them out here Tracy. I know last year Radisson did not incubate right away.(being her first year) But our experienced male took over and then she came around very nicely. this year a different story. both doing well.

They face west but are tucked in pretty deep in a corner so they might well be wet from rain blown in by the wind.  But to answer your question, yes they are protected, they have an overhang and aren't near an edge.

So, somewhere in West Winnipeg, I was doing errands and noticed a crow flying towards a high rise building (not the nestsite building) and then heard that distinctive kaking (sp?) sound.  I looked up in time to see a falcon launch from the top of the building and dive at the crow.  Another crow joined in and after some low flying aerial acrobatics over a road they all disappeared behind some trees.  A minute later the peregrine reappeared flying up to the top of the building and sitting where it could do a little preening in the afternoon sun. So, crows seen off, territory successfully defended.  A very good afternoon.  Don't know what the drivers thought though as this unfolded in front of them.  :o A bit of a driving distraction I would think. ;D ;D ;D

Sorry for the inconvenience of you having to wade through our occasional misplaced silliness, MaggieBlue.
As the author of the hockey and cheese threads, I did start them in the members only section.  Sometimes though, we might get a bit excited and refer to those members only comments while in the general forum area.
When you login and go through all the unread threads, it might seem that there is too much non peregrine chatter, but most of it is actually in members only sections. TPC usually starts a members only thread and shovels the comments out of the bird related sections.
Hope that kind of explains what happened here.

So far as we know, doing okay.  We don't have "eyes" on this nest but their behaviour, when we can see it, looks right.  We hope to go by and get a look at the birds/nest from the building on the weekend, but have to get that confirmed at this point.

Dennis got some wonderful photos folks don't let him fool you.  And while Dennis was snapping pics, Larry and I were busy installing a nest-tray under the eggs and a camera so that we can check on the eggs/nest-tray without having to access the site every other day - access isn't convenient and we don't want to scare the birds off the nest any more often than we need/needed to.

Anywho, Jules watched us for a little while when we arrived but didn't hop off her eggs to berate us until we actually started to install the camera and the nest-tray  I did the box, Larry handled the technology.  Jules took to the new tray after checking it out very (very) thoroughly.  We also installed a little shield to provide her with a bit more privacy which might help her to not leap off the eggs whenever she gets spooked.  We hope this will help her as a first-time mother in a less than ideal peregrine nest site.  She got back on her eggs eventually (or it just seemed like eventually) and settled down to incubating.

She's pretty protected from the wind - certainly from the north and east, so that's a help.  They are now down to one egg, we found the third egg on the other end of the nest-site ledge with a concave break on one side.  Can't tell how long its been "out" but its definitely gone.

Dennis and I have some photos on our cameras, not sure when I will get the first of the cam images, but will post them all when I can.

Sorry folks, obviously I was a little confusing - Jules & Ivy had three eggs, now down to two.  The two eggs I transferred to the nest-tray looked fine so we will keep our fingers crossed for them.

Estimated hatch watch start date: June 1  - we think they began hard incubation on the 4th, but the weather has been cold and she's twitchy and at the beginning of incubation jumped off the eggs at the drop of a hat (no, no one is dropping hats on her  ;)) just very excitable.  She has calmed down now and is sticking better.  Question will be if she has spent too much time off the eggs and/or if the cold will slow the hatch down.  We will let you know what we see ...

And Eye-Spy our techno-god, doesn't forget anything ... its kinda spooky actually.  We'll be doing something, something unexpected arises and techno-god must solve and I think, oops, don't have a widget, but I have some duct tape that might save the day!  I offer it to His Excellence and lo and behold, from beneath his copious robes magically appears a widget, and not just any widget, a widget that takes dictation!  :o

Truly a techno-god is our Eye-Spy!

I wish I were exaggerating, but I'm not.  This happpens everywhere I work with Larry regardless of the situation, whether he's been there before and was able to plan ahead (or not as in the WW case).  It's very, very cool.  And I'm never expecting it so I get the Eye-Spy equivalent of a smack on the back of the head, aka, a hairy eyeball  :P

If you offend the 'chick'
you'll feel her 'stick'
otherwise known as her 'hoe'
out of the sandbox you'll 'go'
if you hear a 'beep beep'
you'll know you are in 'deep'
so you'd better scrape and 'bow'
or you'll feel the 'pow'
both friend and 'foe'
and now you 'know'.

Nope!  And I think ballywing was saying the same thing.  I've seen one sitting in a few places, but have yet to see flight at all.  I guess I'm just spoiled this year because we're so far ahead.  Last year, we were just getting started at this time!  I'm sure (hope) that when the eggs hatch, they'll spend more time at the hotel, and then I'll see them.

Oops, didn't mean to change the topic of this thread.

Post by: The Peregrine Chick on May 28, 2009, 09:46
Sad news, we lost the two remaining eggs at the West Winnipeg site.  Not sure what might have happened, we hope that perhaps the digital recorder we had on the camera monitoring the nest might be able to provide us with some information but if it happened at night, I'm afraid we just won't know.

Jules and Ivy are a young pair (we'll we know he is) but they are new together so hopefully having tried, even unsuccessfully this year, they will be more inclined to try it again with each other next year.  Its not unusual for unsuccessful pairs to split and try their luck elsewhere with other mates - that's what might have happened between Ivy and Lucy, despite their being siblings.  So we will just have to hope that Jules and Ivy stick long enough to be successful, they seem like a good fit as a pair - except for their nest site choices of course.

More on what's next in West Winnipeg later today ...

Post by: maggieblue on May 28, 2009, 10:01
Very sad for them  :(  I hope that they stay together too.  Perhaps after their experiences this year they will choose a better location, preferably one of those deluxe nest boxes.

Title: West Winnipeg - 2009 / May
Post by: The Peregrine Chick on May 28, 2009, 10:21
No, but have no idea if this pair would even consider it because I don't know what kind of parents they are ... we'll watch for copulation though, that might indicate they are considering another attempt ....

Yes, but that's not unusual -  one minute there, one minute gone.  Hopefully the camera will have caught all or part of what might have happened.

Title: West Winnipeg - 2009 / May
Post by: The Peregrine Chick on May 28, 2009, 15:45
We don't believe so, the site is very inaccessible and we know who has access and haven't had any concerns so far!  So the likelihood of them disappearing into a human pocket, is virtually nil.

Larry (Eye-Spy) is checking out the video and we know who screwed up the angle on our camera - Jules.  With a whole ledge to land on, she sat on the camera, even though we put it too low (we thought) for any peregrine to sit on it, before getting up on the "exit" ledge.  Means we won't know exactly what happened to the eggs as the cam was perfectly aimed at the nestbox for the last little bit.  But we are close enough that we should be able to rule some things in or out.

Keep you all in the loop ...

And Jules and Ivy are fine, they have still been spotted in all their pre-incubating favourite spots ...

Beautiful shots as usual Dennis!
Thank you for that series... that courtship most likely happens so fast that observers on the street would most likely miss all of that.
Thank you so much!

Dennis and I spent a few hours yesterday hanging out with Jules & Ivy - Dennis more than me, so when I got peckish and remembered I had brought a banana, I shared ... Dennis' views on happiness are so zen-like ...  ;)

The little terrors are hanging out back on the Diner and the Bleachers and occasionally on the B&B.  Oh, and they have been hanging out at the nestsite again.  The whole food-transfer-in-the-air thingy that Dennis caught on film is part of their pair bonding rituals.  We haven't seen any "hanky-panky" in the last little while, but we might have missed it if these two are going to try again.  We hope to be able to get access a wee bit later this week to the old nestsite just to see if they have been up to some mischief since they lost their eggs ....

Enjoy all the photos you send Dennis and once again want to let you know that I love receiving them and am amazed at some of the shots that you are lucky enough to get.

For those that couldn't open or run the power point...you need to have Microsoft Office installed on your PC. You will have the same problem when TPC puts up the link. What you need to do is download a free power point reader from Microsoft. When installed you can only view power point presentations. Here is a link to do so...if you are interested.

Its unfortunate you had trouble Moka.  And the file wasn't encrypted technically, it just had a lock on it so that it couldn't be "opened" (vs "run") to take it apart for the photos.  It was designed to run automatically but not to be "opened".  Dennis is very generous with his photos, but some photos he deserves to be able to keep copyrighted.   ;D

To all the phanatics that have taken the time to post comments...thank-you. Not all photos are of printing quality...but will give you an idea of what can unfold in mere seconds. This is the reason that many photos have been posted. A Bird's Eye View...so to speak for those that are unable to view Birds in action.
Do to other events and circumstances at this time I'm unsure when I will be able to get to the West-End Birds again. These Peregrines are the most easily photographed birds do to their surrounding/location. Sorry that Trey & Princess didn't nest in a location like this to give easy access !!
Now, perhaps I should rent my own crane and platform...with tent and hang out with the birds ?? A lift for a morning cup of "Tim's" that Phanatics would provide of coarse...just kidding.
Looking forward to the "Banding Day"

Cheers !

Sorry about that...as TPC noted, these two hang out at their usual spots.  I look for them every morning and afternoon and seem to luck out and find one of them and sometimes both of them...
I'm happy that they are both hangin' out together...which probably means that they are officially a couple.  Let's all hope that next year Ivy and Jules will be back and raise some beautiful falcons.  Other spotters will have to keep an eye or two out for them as I won't be able to.

Woo hoo! A sighting (maybe)! Somebody (Ivy? Jules?) atop a building while I was driving east on Portage. Given that I was driving and my distance vision is not the greatest, I can't be sure but it certainly looked like it should be a peregrine. That's the trouble with bad eyes. Which leads to a question for another thread - can someone who is very short-sighted help with fledge watch?

This morning, as I was stopped at a light, saw Jules fly and swoop up, actually folks more like warp speed flying here....all I can say is WOW!  Falcons are amazing!
She swooped up to her regular perch, she was cacking up a storm.  Ivy was on his regular perch facing another direction.  Maybe she was giving him the gears for perchin' all morning.   ::)

Jules on her corner at the Diner and no sign of Ivy. After stepping out of the truck for a couple of minutes...off the perch she comes...makes a couple of circles and then behind the Bleachers. Then another loop around the Bleachers, but didn't come back.
Change my location hoping to locate...yep ! Both now perched on the East side of the Bleachers...then Ivy takes flight and does a couple of turns and heads towards a near by tower.
Checking my watch...I still have some time before work.
The clouds start to clear and the early morning sun makes him glow...out of the truck...click,click,click,then Jules fly's in. More click, click, click...with a lot of keee keee kee kee ke ke ke ke going on...what a sight to see and hear on a early Tuesday morn.

Hmm, not sure what happened to a post BccS and I made on Monday August 3rd......however,

Today, I saw a fabulous display off flying by the two West Winnipeg birds, Jules and Ivy.  For a moment, I thought I saw more than two falcons flying around, so I was a bit concerned.  I pulled over for a moment, but they were just so fast, I couldn't get a great look at them, plus, I wasn't able to get into the best position to spot them all.  It was just the way they were all flying and their behavior.  There was no aerial battles taking place, from what I witnessed, but again, I did not have open sky to watch.
I do know that there were pigeons scattering about so I would like to think that the two of them were stooping for supper.  I wish I could report more than that but, that's all I saw.

Your original post had too many details on the location of the West Winnipeg pair so it self-destructed (with a little help).

That's what I figured...sorry about that TPC.
When I post, I try really hard to NOT disclose anything about the area as I respect the reasons why.
I can't even remember what it was that I wrote, so all in all, no harm, no foul, or as the master says, no fuss, no muss!   ;)

Heya Allikat, specially for you. ;D
Saw your boy Ivy on the way in today. He was sitting on the south sign, looking very content and very much like Trey. Might go have a look round this weekend to see if I can find her. Will keep you updated. :-*  B

This month started out with Jules and Ivy on the Diner first thing this morning as I drove past.  Actually, they buzzed the Bleachers then settled onto their usual corners on the Diner ... just like the old days!

Oh...am I ever happy that you saw the both of them TPC!!!!!   Love hearing about Jules and Ivy.  It's weird though, I feel a little lost as I always watched for them every morning and late afternoon.  Okay, I'm having falcon withdrawals here...
Off topic here...same goes for the Radisson pair!  I also would stop to see them every morning and afternoon, to and from work and some weekends with BccS....more falcon withdrawals!!   :'(

Dennis found another hangout for the WW birds and since I saw Jules there this morning, I think it probably deserves a name, so, lets go with "the Look-out".  So while she was happily looking east from the Look-out, Ivy was tucked up on the Bleachers - almost missed him in fact, he was tucked so close to the wall!

0750 hours (local)

Rockstar Junior was parked at the nestsite this morning - his white breast made him very easy to see as he had decided to look "out" (e.g., out from the building) rather than "in" when all one sees is his grey back and frequently that just gets lost against the back ground.  But not today .... pretty bird, good paternal genes ... but I'm not biased ...

Biased....No, not at all!  ::)
But I know what you mean TPC, Ivy is just like his Dad.  He can tuck himself in so well, just like Trey can but when they want to be seen, they just know where to perch!  Boys (Falcon).......

The sad bit about the eggs seemed new to me, I didn't realize one egg was accidentally broken by the parents.  Otherwise it was a great article, and with good choice of photos.
It is exciting to realize this year there were seven leaving.  Wonder where they are now?

Don't know for sure the parents broke the egg, could have been attacked by crows, had a single hole in it - could have bashed against anything when it rolled.  Why would it roll you ask, because Jules & Ivy were nesting on a hard flat surface with no scrape in the gravel to keep their eggs contained.  And they were scared off the eggs frequently it appeared to us - not intentionally, just not a great nestsite and they were constantly on alert.  As for the other two eggs, the article is a bit wrong ... the eggs disappeared and we assume they were "disappeared" either by the parents (like Trey & Princess) because they were not viable OR because a crow or something similar got to the nest, spooked off Jules/Ivy, got the eggs and poof.  As I said, not an ideal nest location!!  I think the "parents took them" was a cross-over from the Radisson story where Trey or Princess removed one egg after about a week of incubation.  No worries though, it's nice to have a great piece like that.

One thing that is actually two related things is that the bottom photo isn't of Ivy, its of Jules and I really wish they had identified the photographers.  I gave them the middle image but the first was taken from our photo gallery and is a photo taken by Pam and the bottom was taken from Dennis' photo gallery.  The photo I provided that they didn't use was one of the chicks, which is one they asked for specifically but hey.  What bothers me more is that none of them have photo credits.  I will email to see if they will add them and will let you know how I make out.

Jules and Ivy were a treat to watch fly across the West Winnipeg sky!
Ivy looks more and more like Trey everyday!
Jules is a beauty and I hope she can calm down and not spook so easily so there will be little white fluffy cuties.
Oh how I will miss the falcons in the Western skies!
