: Little Owl - Netherlands / Beleef de Lente
: birdcamfan May 23, 2012, 16:48
The Beleef de Lente site has featured a pair of Stone Owls (European Screech Owl) for a number of years. This pair of tiny owls has 3 eggs this year and the first one has just hatched. The chicks are very cute in a homely way but it is fun to watch them grow and morf into beautiful full grown owls.

Owl lovers can find this site at http://www.beleefdelente.nl/vogel/steenuil

From TPC:  Steenuil translates as "screech owl" however true screech owls are restricted to North America.  They have also been called Stone Owls which sounds neat but there actually isn't an owl species by that name.  These owls are technically Little Owls (Athene noctua) and they look alot like our Burrowing Owls.  Back to the screech owl part, it's possible that screech owl is a common name rather a technical name - like calling peregrine falcons "duck hawks".

Thanks for telling us about this, bcf.  I've been keeping my eye on Pa and the drama (or lack thereof) in his "closet", but now I'll be checking this nest as well... 8)

Just checked in to see if I could see a baby, but mom is staying tight on that nest.  She looked at the camera as if to say "What?!?"  Just want to see the chick, mom... ::)

I looked this morning but could only seem something squirming under her. I'll have to spend some time watching tonight. She is really glued to them isn't she?

The chick can be seen squirming under Mrs Stone Owl's butt. She is a bit nose down so the chick is under her but visible. It sure can move!

I had a good look at this active youngster. There is some worry at the site since the male has not been seen for a few days. The female owl broods exclusively and the male brings food. This female has had to leave the eggs and chick exposed in order to hunt and has only been able to bring back worms and larvae rather than mice. Without a steady supply of food and warmth, there is a worry that the eggs and/or chicks may not survive.

Oh no, that's too bad, bcf. Is there still only one chick or do you know? ???

Still one chick and two eggs.

Unfortunately, the male did not appear last night. The female has instinct for "chosen" not have to go hunting, but the young and the eggs remain. This means that the pup is still virtually no food had.

natural process - We expect them to go hunting today. The young will therefore not survive. Probably it will during the course of the day of death. We have seen that the female at a given moment of the dead young begins to eat, or even eat. That is a natural process that we include also the stork seen.

non-intervention - We have with the RSPB and other species groups agreed not to intervene. So we are not feeding. Each year failed a quarter of the owl nests, for several reasons. That one parent disappears (dies) is a common cause. It is very annoying every time to see, especially if the residents are involved in 'their' owls. And that is obviously true. We therefore understand the call for feeding. We stand behind the appointment just to look (and us to wonder about) to what is in front of the cameras going.

other eggs - We do not expect the other two eggs are hatching, before it's too long ago that the first young hatched crawled. At some point we collect the eggs to explore them.

Drop Clutch? - It happens that in this kind of situation a replacement clutch is started. Of course this is another male. That can sometimes go fast, we know from experience. We will have to wait and see if that will happen here, but we will certainly follow.

Oh no!  That's too sad!  I was watching the nest last night (early morning for them) and was intrigued by that roly poly little chick.  There was a visitor hanging around for quite awhile, looking into the nestbox and looking at times as though he/she wanted to visit mom and babe.  Looked like a dove.

I'll be very sad if that baby dies but it doesn't sound like there's much hope :'(
: Re: Little Owl - Netherlands / Beleef de Lente (2012)
: susha May 26, 2012, 09:49
The visitor is still there and looks as though he/she is trying to get into the nestbox ???
: Re: Little Owl - Netherlands / Beleef de Lente (2012)
: birdcamfan May 26, 2012, 11:02
At the end of last year, they erected a tighter opening so that the crows and doves could not get into the "hallway" outside of the nestbox. Last year was a constant battle between the owls and their visitors as several pairs tried to lay eggs in the hallway. It has not been a factor this year and the visitors vacate as soon as Mrs or Mr Stoneowl poke their heads out and squawk.

I got such a giggle last night as I watched the little chick running around the nest, falling over onto its back, then on its face, falling asleep for a few seconds before running round again...peeping away for its mom to return to the nest.  Thought all this was normal stuff and that mom was feeding it.  When I looked in earlier today, when mom was off the nest, the babe was moving so much more slowly and there was no peeping.  Too sad, knowing the baby won't survive.

Mom is on the nest right now. She looks to be sleeping. Not sure if the chick has died yet. :-\ Does anyone know? Very sad circumstances. :'(

Just looked in on this nest in time to see the mom leave for a few minutes and the chick was not only alive, but cheeping and moving around like it was yesterday!  Then I watched the clip showing that the mom brought in food four times in an hour, so it looks like she's been able to feed the baby on her own.  I can't understand the comments, but it seems that there is quite a bit of controversy about whether or not people should be intervening to help feed the chick.  This is excruciating to watch if that baby isn't going to be able to survive with only one parent... :'(

So nice to hear that the chick is still alive and hopefully thriving. :D Mama is on the nest right now, trying to catch a few Zzzzzz's, I think. I haven't yet had the luck of seeing the lone chick. I guess Mama has abandoned the other eggs. She is no longer incubating them.

I watched for a long time last night. She left several times and returned with Larvae of some type that are plentiful and easy to catch (according to the website). It should not be too long before she can leave the little one alone for longer and hunt for larger prey that the chick will need. I hope the little one can hang in there for a while and get to that point. The website monitor feels that the other eggs will not hatch, it has been too long. The last thing she needs is more hungry mouths to feed. I still hope and pray for this pair.

I have been following this site for awhile now and was feeling so bad when I thought the baby wouldn't make it. It sure is a feisty wee thing and sure is trying to survive. Also happy that "dad" found his way home to take over the "hunter gatherer"duties. I Can't imagine the other two eggs will be hatching as they were out in the cold when Mom realized she had to be both mom and dad.  One chick is better than none in her world.  Will have to keep an eye on them to see how it all unfolds. That wee one will be so cute in a week or two.  They have such cute expressions and a head on a swivel!

I checked out a few of the clips and it would appear that the pigeons are bigger than the adult owls, so it is a relatively little owl.

The pigeons were attacking the male adult and knocking him off of the outside entrance shelf.

Ever since dad got back from his escapades, mom hasn't been off the nest much, which is great for the family of course, but affording us little chance to see the baby.  I just checked in and mom was off for a quick break and the seemingly contented wee babe was visible for a minute or two.  He\she definitely seems to be thriving and becoming more and more pleasantly plump :)  I saw many regular and plentiful deliveries of groceries last night - is dad making up for his absence I wonder or is this a normal nighttime routine?

: birdcamfan May 30, 2012, 22:28
Great to hear Susha because I sure haven't seen the baby since Mom was relieved of her dash and dine responsibilities. You are right the Dad seems to hunt at night likely because it is humid and the larvae are out on the ground as well as the mice, rats, and other critters they love to eat.

Posted today on the Steenuil website - they will be banding the mother owl and weighing the chick at 3 PM Dutch time. That is about 8 AM our time tomorrow morning. They do this every year to assess the development of the chick. This mother owl is new and unbanded so they want to try and keep track of her. The chick is still too tiny to band.

I have seen this before and they access the nest box from inside the barn on which it is installed. The owls get a bit funny afterwards and will stand in the corner staring like they are in shock for a while. This group almost always posts an interesting clip of the banding and weighing and it is really neat to see how tiny these owls are. they will also report the weight and development of the chick as well as indicating if it is within normal range or not.

It is fortunate for these owls that they have such a dedicated group of people caring for them. We are lucky to have such an interesting website brought to us.

The clip is posted from this mornings ringing and weighing. The chick is 28.5 grams which they explain is a bit underweight. They hope that the weight will be caught up now that there is a steady food supply. There are pictures of the Mom and chick at http://www.steenuilenrondwinterswijk.nl/logboek/geringd-en-gewogen
One of the remaining eggs was examined and did not contain an embryo so was unfertilized. The other one stuck to the Mom and she carried it out on her foot today.

I watched the whole thing and was amazed at how docile the mom was when she was picked up.  Poor little thing recovered pretty quickly, but I'm glad you warned me that she'd be in the corner, looking stunned, when she was first put back.  Very endearing, these wee creatures! :-*

So the little birdie has a stiff leg that seems to be impeding his/her mobility.  They don't know the cause and they don't know if the chick will be able to leave the nestbox when the time comes to go out and become independent - about three weeks typically.  The researchers say that they often find dead chicks in the nestboxes that they provide for the owls, but this is the first time that they (and the world) are able to see a drama like this unfold.  They will watch to see what happens, but they expect that if the babe can't get out on his own, the parents will eventually stop feeding it and it will starve to death.  The researchers don't intend to give in to the inevitable public pressure to rescue the chick and keep it in captivity, but they will take it and euthanize.  Just a wait and see right now.  The chick continues to grow and thrive and anything can happen!

 :-* :'( :(

I was very sad when I read this news. They have been watching this little one for a week with the injury/stiffness. I haven't seen anything indicating how this happened. Maybe it was born that way. We have to keep our hope for this little one up. Maybe with some growth, this will turn around for the better.
: Re: Little Owl - Netherlands / Beleef de Lente (2012)
: birdcamfan June 16, 2012, 16:59
Little Stone Owl's leg is quite obviously stiff and formed differently than his other one. He is getting around now that his Mom is less frequently hovering over him. He is starting to get some feathers and flapping his wings madly. He seems to have a lot of strength and I hope that helps him overcome his problem. His first battle is to get out of the nest box which has an elevated small hole leading to a small "hallway". In other years the chicks have gone to this area as soon as they could manage the leap and it seems to happen when their wing feathers have grown. They fledge within a week to 10 days after going out of the nest box to the hallway.
: Re: Little Owl - Netherlands / Beleef de Lente (2012)
: susha June 16, 2012, 18:06
He seems to be a strong little thing and is obviously eating and growing...it's very painful to watch that poor wretched leg, but the little owl doesn't seem to be aware of anything wrong and just keeps going.  Once the chicks make it out into the "hallway", do they go back and forth from the nest box, bcf?  Or so they stay in the hallway?  I guess the odds are against this wee creature, but he's so full of spunk, that he just might make it!  I sure hope so. :-*
: Re: Little Owl - Netherlands / Beleef de Lente (2012)
: birdcamfan June 17, 2012, 13:50
I have seen them go back in the nest box but they tend to stay in the hallway and look outside or stand on the ledge, then one day they are just gone. I wonder if this little guys leg is a developmental abnormality. I was looking back at the earlier clips because it had bothered me that when he was less than a week old he would often be on his back with his legs kicking in the air. I had never seen an owl chick or any other chick do that after the first day or so. Maybe he already had a problem at that point. The Mom here is thought to be a first timer, she really dotes on the chick.

: susha June 17, 2012, 14:31
I noticed that he did lots of lying on his back and kicking his little legs, but I haven't seen these owl babies before, so didn't realize that it was abnormal.

Translation from Dutch

first observation - posted by: Ronald STONE / date: June 25, 2012, 8:03 p.m.

A first observation of the dead young learned that apart from a stiff leg more was going on. The condition that the gap in the first 3 days, the rose can not catch up. Far from even. The first impression it made was that it definitely does not look like a young 30 days old. It looked much younger.

weight - At home I have the young directly on the scales. It weighed only 73, 9 grams where the expected weight at that age around the 145 grams. A young 9 days weighs around 75 grams, which for comparison.

wing - The wing length was significantly behind. At an age of 30 days, measuring a wing normally between 124 and 126 millimeters. Measurement at this young yielded only a meager 53 mm at a normal size for a youngster of 14 days.

condition - With the aid of the age and weight, we can calculate the condition index. When a young, which is in good condition fluctuates around the one (margin 10%). The calculation for this young comes out at 0.5. Thus there is a very poor structural condition and growth retardation. What we all images on basis of suspicion, now confirmed, this young was in such bad condition that it is never on our own cabinet would have to leave, let alone outside the cabinet could survive.

further research - These are just the bare facts. Further research might learn the cause of the poor condition. The prey supply in recent weeks can not lie, that was enough for the young to feed. Once we know more we bring you up to date.

This was my first season watching these cams and I'm looking forward to watching next year.  I sure hope that Pa and the next little owl who comes along (is it ever the same one?) both have better experiences!

They only know that they are the same owls year-to-year if they are banded. Neither the male or female were banded this year. If I recall correctly, only one of last year's pair was banded. They think the female this year was young and perhaps having her first clutch of eggs. She was clumsy with the eggs and chick, and had irregular incubation at first. I guess there could have been other factors at play too. There is never a short supply of other birds vying for this nest-box and creating a lot of stress, which is why they closed down the opening to the "hallway" this year.

There are currently chicks at this location. There had been four, but on June 7th one of the chicks died.

http://www.beleefdelente.nl/vogel/steenuil/weblog/400 (http://www.beleefdelente.nl/vogel/steenuil/weblog/400)
Interesting video on June 7th, where the mother removes the dead chick, putting it next to the exit. When the father comes with prey, as he is about to leave he notices the dead chick and returns it to the mother.  This was then repeated with the mother removing the chick and putting it next to the exit and the father, after delivering a meal goes to exit, backs back into the box and returns the dead chick to the mother. The third time the mother moves the chick to the back of the box.

Okay, the link does not take you to the video, it takes you to the website. Look for the June 7 video "Een kuuk dood" (A chick death).

You may not want to watch the June 8 video "Toch nog nut" (Still useful) as the dead chick becomes food for its siblings.

Yesterday was the first time one of the chicks went outside the nestbox. Then again in the middle of the night, one chick went outside the box. Both of these excursions were short, but it is expected to happen more often as the parents will begin to tempt the young to come out.

June 27 - after the chicks were banded and returned to the nestbox, all they wanted was to be in the corner. They all wanted to be in the same corner and by trying to go under the one already there, two of them end up lifting the one that was there first. The video was funny to watch.

Okay, that might be the best webcam view I've ever seen.
So cool seeing them out on the branches ... :D

The videos for June 30 gave me a heart attack.

First "De Val" (the fall) shows all three chick out on the limb at about 4:30 am. One of the chick decides to try to leap from the branch to the top of the nestbox. There is a lot of wing action and talons scraping on the sloped roof, but the chick slides off and falls. They show this part in slow motion as well, so you can clearly see the chick fall from view.

Then "Avonturier" (adventurer) shows two chick at between 7 and 8 am outside the nestbox and in the background you can see the third chick making it's way back up the branches till it is back with it's siblings. YAY! Way to go chick!

The site is up again this year, with a total of SIX cameras on two locations. Right now, at the first location there is one owl inside on cam2 and one outside on cam3.

On Cam2, they are currently sitting on three eggs. One of yesterday's videos shows the owl getting up and there is a nice view of all three.

It's been mentioned before that the camera placement outside the nestbox is excellent. Its close, it captures all the comings and goings and the chicks venturing out, etc.

But the video clip on March 19th actually had them blurring out some parts of the clip.  :o :o  A little too close.

These chicks are growing up. Still a bit of fluff on the underbelly, and it looks like they have a bad haircut.
