: 2012 - Kinderchicklets / Peregrine Falcons and Songbirds
: Kinderchick June 21, 2012, 14:09
The Kinderchicklets have been learning about other kinds of birds these days, Tracy, as well as raptors such as Peregrine Falcons. Many of the 'chicklets report that they have backyard bird feeders at their own homes and enjoy watching the birds come to eat bird seed and/or play in their backyard bird bath. Today, they were learning about different songbirds such as Robins and Finches and Cardinals.

I brought a replica of a Cardinal to school this morning and we passed it all around, squeezing it's tummy, in order to activate the actual sound that a Cardinal makes. (We have a replica of a Peregine Falcon like that too in our classroom). ;)

They thought that the Cardinal looked and sounded so beautiful and that prompted a new question... "Do Peregrine Falcons eat songbirds such as Cardinals?"

I'm going to answer this questions here for some of our other Young Fans even though I did visit with the Kinderchicklets (and Skye in Grade 1) on Wednesday.

Yes, the peregrines would eat a Cardinal I'm afraid.  But that would mostly be peregrines that live out east or during the winter months down in Texas, Mexico and further south in South America where they live year round.  We only occasionally see Cardinals here in Manitoba and because there aren't many here, it would be tough for a peregrine to find one.
