Title: West Winnipeg - 2013 / Beau & Jules
Post by: GCG on February 14, 2013, 06:13
TPC, is there a possibility you will try to lure Jules and Beau back to their WW nestbox this year?  ???

Oh, more than a possibility GCG - actually we are going to try to stop them from the "bad" site right from the start of the season so they have to go elsewhere - and since they have nested nearby before, they should shift there just like they shifted a couple of years ago when we lost their 2010 site.  We are still in the planning/prepping stage but when I will be sure to post more concrete news when I have it.

Well then you better get started, because I think somebody is home!
Driving to work this morning, spotted birdy up on the "t" on the diner south/west side. The "t" is sometimes deceiving...looks like something there when there isn't. So, I rolled down my window and had a good look. Definitely a bird, his/her belly tawny in the morning sunlight.

I suppose it could be somebody other than one of the west wpg birds...but definitely somebody there. In this freezing weather!

OMG! Cooper, I hope what you saw was not our PF. -40 degrees with WC. On the other hand, maybe our PG's can predict early spring better than a groundhog. For us, AND them, I can only hope.  ;D

There has been a crow or raven on the Diner for the last week sitting on the signs and I think cleaning out the prey remains from the peregrines' cache behind the sign ... might it have been him/her Cooper?

I'll second Cooper, she's been around long enough to know the difference.
Buff chest, no way that could be a crow or a raven.
But still we look and seek.

Do you think it could have been a Cooper's Hawk (No pun intended!). They seem to be back here a little earlier than the PF's and we have had one hang out in Wolseley for a few weeks every year in March. They are a good size and have a light colored chest.

Puns are fine. Coincidentally, I chose my screen name for the bird. Some years ago, I happened to make the heinous mistake of suggesting that a bird hunting in my yard was a peregrine falcon. My daughter, who has followed the Radisson birds for years before me, rolled her eyes and said, "Oh Mother! It couldn't have been a peregrine. (and she proceeded to tell me all the reasons why). It was probably a Cooper's hawk."

But, sure it could have been a hawk or other sort of falcon. However, the colouring, the stance of the bird and other more subliminal factors (I've observed the falcons on the letters more times than I can could count), suggests to me, I saw what I saw.

To be continued, Cooper. My son is a letter carrier. A couple of years ago, he delivered mail in an area that have Cooper's Hawks. One day, one was sitting on a fence, flew down to the ground and then up into a tree. He then took a picture from his cell, forwarded it to me, thinking it was a PF. Sent this to TPC, she confirmed it to be a Cooper's Hawk. I agree with you, spring may have come early and we have the first of our PF's. Time to get the countdown timer up. ;D ;)

You are lucky. Thanks for sharing this. I look up there every time I run by even though I didn't think I would see anything. Now I have something to look for. Any sightings since then?

I wish I had something more to report. But no more sightings yet. I look every morning on my way to work and there has been nobody there when I've gone by. I try to look on the way home too, but often sunset in the eyes or darkness prevents me have having a real good look.

I'd really like it if someone else caught the next glimpse (and soon!). So keep looking!   :)

Well, it very well could be a peregrine since one was spotted last season on March 12/ 2012 by Mother Hen. Pam took a photo and she posted it on the forum. Here is the link.

Hmmm... Saturday morning, about 10:00 a.m. I saw large bird sitting on southeast corner of Clarion Hotel. I would have said it could be a PF except that his/her chest was quite a rosy beige - not as pale as I would have thought. Of course it could have been sunlight tricks. Silhouette was falcon-like but I think a bit larger than the bird I saw before. Was keeping my mouth shut about it, lest you all think Cooper's just hallucinating, until I saw your post this morning. Maybe we saw the same bird.

There was a red-tailed hawk in the Polo Park area end of last week, got a good look at it across from the Clarion Hotel (the apartments on the south-side of Portage) and it had a rosy/rusty coloured breast.  Darn near caused me to drive off the road and into the Assiniboine River!  Have been watching the WW site pretty intensely for the last week after Cooper's initial bird sighting but nothing in any of the usual spots until this red-tail.  With BirdNut's sighting at HSC though, maybe maybe.  If we can figure out who's at HSC it would narrow down the possibilities ...

Hmmm, I'll bet it was the red-tail that I saw!

I commiserate with your driving issues TPC. It's hard bird-watching and having to look out for the darned traffic in that area too. :)

Spotted a bird on the south side of the diner. Wasn't sure which kind of bird, but not a crow. I lifted my camera to zoom in and get closer look when my batteries crapped out. Very quickly replaced the batteries, looked up and the bird was GONE - ahhhhhhh!

Scanned the area and a bird was soaring high and headed east-ish. Lost sight of it.

Did find a huge flock (murder) of crows relatively close to the Tower.

Looks like Beau is back in West Winnipeg but I only had binocs with me so while it looked like him, I only got very brief glimpses of what I think was a red leg band on his right leg ... Dennis and I will try to get a confirmation on the bird tomorrow if he/she cooperates of course ....

Not a great close shot like Dennis'!  It was taken with a small pocket camera zoomed to the max and cropped.
But since I like to ask for photo confirmations :)

The bird I saw at the Diner this evening has a head that looks darker than Jules' and looked smaller overall but both Jules and Beau are larger birds, not like our Radisson offspring who are smaller overall.  The black on "his" head looked like more than any of our other birds in town at the moment, which is Beau's distinctive feature at least to me since most of our pre-Princess birds had very full black caps.

As for the red band, I just think I saw red.  Now whether it was full red or black over red, I can't say for sure.  The only other birds we know of in town with red on its band is Jolicoeur and this bird did not look like her ... nor Alice who has stayed/passed through town in previous years.  Sandy from Fargo who has visited in the spring in past years also has a black over red band but this bird seemed male sized.

While I was watching, bird's head was on a constant swivel looking for his/her mate.  Then a crow came by and protested the peregrine's presence and that set him off and he took off after the crow like it was another peregrine.  Seemed like territorial defense to me, another indication that this bird is one of the WW resident pair.  After lots of aerial acrobatics and yelling, the crow went one way and the peregrine went north to do a few lazy circles before returning to the Diner to sit in the NE corner in the sun.  About a 1/2 hour later, he took off to the north very fast - I suspect to go kill something.  And that was the last I saw of him ...

Sorry, went of to turn off the countdown timers before coming back to post more news ... :)

This morning we found Jules sitting in the watery morning sun, then in popped Beau.  No great fanfare, no welcome back, just a little yak at each other, him sitting on one side, her on the other.  She did a little shuffle on the railing at the Look-out and Dennis got a clear look (and photo) of her ring-band.  Beau was on the other side so we broke down Wowzer and the scope and we changed locations and after a long (long) time just hanging out as he ate (must have been a Canada Goose based on the length of time it took for him to eat!) and then napped.  Finally he moved back to an edge so we could get a look at him (with his bulging crop!) and despite the light he "mooned" Dennis and Dennis was ready and we got a look at his band.

So Beau and Jules are confirmed in West Winnipeg ... so far they are playing it cool, probably because its been a long trip north.  Beau didn't share food with Jules which is common courting behaviour and she went off to get her own and she hadn't returned when we left a couple of hours later.  So neither looks to be in a mad rush to get rolling for the season.  Which is nice for a change!

Anyone seen Beau and Jules lately? Twice this week on my way to work I've seen a birdy soaking up the sun on the letters on south side of diner (Wednesday on the "p", this morning on the "r") but both times, I questioned whether I was seeing one of our peregrines. The bird I saw seemed to have quite a bit more golden brown in feathers and was poofier than I'd expect, making me wonder if that hawk was still hanging around.  ???

I haven't seen them but that is likely just my schedule.  Don't know about Dennis, but he'll probably post when he sees your question.  He can' also confirm my recollection that it isn't unusual for Beau and Jules to take off for a few days right after coming back to town ... as I recall, they do it at the start of courtship every year.  Considering the weather is 10C degrees colder than the seasonal norm, it's possible they are in no rush and are off on their annual honeymoon ...

Late yesterday afternoon, took a drive and found one bird at the Bleachers. By the size I would say female.

Didn't see her at first. She was trying to fool us, as she was not at the front of the Bleachers, but rather was tucked further back. Where she was, she would have been out of the wind, but she still had full sun. The give away was her shadow.

Hi TPC,

I have a few questions, I hope you can answer.

Back in 2010, Beau and Jules successfully fledged 3 chicks from the B&B (Bed & Breakfast, for those who are new to the forum), but the past 2 years the building has been undergoing work to the roof area. Do you know if that work is completed? When they were doing the work, was the nest box there removed? I'm just wondering if that location may be a possiblity for nesting this year.

It does look like they have finished the exterior work on the building but we have been waiting for confirmation from the Board of Directors.  We've also been waiting for an answer as to whether or not we can put a box back up there - and yes, it would be a new box, their old box we moved to the Diner so they would (hopefully) recognize what it was and nest there.  They do recognize it based on the scrapes he makes in it each year but she has her own preferences.

TPC, thanks for the info.

Yesterday evening, did a drive around the area and found Jules once again hunkered down at the Bleachers (same as two days ago, her shadow gave her away). She seems to be keeping a low profile there. We had to get right up close to see her. Someone checking it out from the street probably would miss her.

Yesterday afternoon, drove by the Bleachers and had one falcon land. He was kakking very loudly. Took a couple of pictures and realized from the red band it was Beau. After a few minutes, we decided to go look for Jules. Just as I finished packing up my camera, Jules popped up from somewhere at the back of the Bleachers and flew off. We followed her to the Lookout.

Dennis and Wowzer were checking on Jules and Beau today in West Winnipeg and their love affair has shifted into hot-n-heavy.  Best of all, after a little canoodlin', Jules flew over and hopped into the nestbox on the Diner!!!  And she stayed there for awhile while Beau watched from the far side of the building.

Wish I could say that Jules stayed there but she and Beau did apparently go visit the "unsuitable" site ... hopefully they are deciding it is unsuitable too ,,,

Yes and no  :D

Yes, the birds do, or now did, like hanging out at the stadium ... for those who know it, they like to sit on the rafters under the roof, particularly on the east side.  And on the yellow rails that held the lights.  Tough to find them when they sat there, far away and dimly lit.

No the Bleachers isn't the stadium.  The site was named the Bleachers because we used to watch the birds kill things nearby and it made us thing of the Roman Coliseum ... hmm, that does still sound a lot like the old Stadium, but no, sorry, different location.

Oh we keep trying but without permissions/cooperation on-site, there is only so much we can do I'm afraid.
And if they have started incubating we are already working on options for the banding which will likely be in June.

Though I can't see into the tuppernest clearly, some of the female's behaviour today looks like she is laying or starting to think about incubating.  Another 24 hours of observations and it should confirm the likelihood of eggs if not the onset of incubation.

When it's confirmed, we can start working on getting access for banding ...

Hi Kinderchick,

If memory serves me, a Tuppernest was installed in 2011. At the time of installation they had laid four eggs, two of which were damaged, which TPC removed and two were put into the tuppernest. Both hatched that year but one did not survive 24 hours, the other was banded and named "Polo" (like Solo, because he was alone). I don't recall that the tuppernest was ever removed.

No it wasn't.  Because we have so much difficulty accessing the site, we leave it there just in case.  If we can get on-site and block them great, if we can't then at least we can help the birds out a little bit.  Sometimes, little things are all we can do in difficult situations.

Thanks for this info, dupre & TPC. I do remember a "tuppernest" being placed in this spot a few years ago, but I just assumed that it had been removed afterwards, so as not to encourage the birds to nest there again.

So This means that thet wouldn't give you access to put a nest box there, or not permission to band any chicks there, or they are actively doing something(s) to keep them away?

Okay, this is going to be hard to describe but I will do my best. We have asked for help to keep the peregrines off the building and we've provided information on how to do it.  And it does happen, but not consistently enough to be effective.  So we have been asking to get access to the area of the nestsite before the birds start nesting to block off the site so they literally can not nest there, but we don't get all the necessary permissions in time.  And yes, we do start months in advance.  Same thing for the banding.  Now that makes everyone who works in the building isn't being helpful and that would not be correct, they are very nice, helpful people.  But access to the actual site is a bit complicated so helpful and willing isn't quite enough to get it done I'm afraid.  We are working with new strategies this year, so I have to be hopeful, but time will tell.  :-\

Yup, looks like we have eggs in the "bad" location, but they look safe in the tuppernest and they certainly have more protection than the Radisson birds have right now!!  Can't tell if they are incubating (think there are just two eggs still but ...) or rather just making sure the eggs are safe from the wet/cold weather today.

The Bleachers is very warm in the afternoon, so I think perhaps they are into incubation, just that the site is warm enough they can get off the eggs when its not too hot.  Seems that they have been incubating almost as long as the Radisson pair - we'll be able to count backwards once the eggs hatch which will give us a good confirmation since the camera angle at this site is less than optimal at the moment ... not due to the cameras, due to the tuppernest being moved just out of camera range!

as of 1545h today ... one of the adults, looks like Beau by the size is tucked firmly on the eggs despite the warm weather and the sun ... we'll see what happens when the sun moves over a bit and not quite so directly on the tuppernest.  He was off the eggs just after lunch when I went by, he was perched in the sun soaking up the rays.

Sorry Qumran, getting my locations mixed up now with all the talk about the Diner, the Bleachers, the Lookout and the B&B  :-[
There are three nestsite buildings in this territory and one old one that would be neat to get back into operation but I don't think that would be possible.  The Bleachers is one of their favourite roost sites - like the Diner, the B&B and the Spa ...

On Sunday we were in the area and about 12:55 there must have been a shift change.

We spotted Beau when we were across the street from the Diner and decided to get closer. One minute we are watching Beau on the Diner, when he ups and takes off. Of course he did this while I was looking down at my camera and fiddling with the settings. Then when I brought my camera up to take his picture he was gone. So while frantically searching the skies we see a peregrine in the distance headed for the Bleachers.

Get in the car and race for the Bleachers. On the way there we see a peregrine take off and lose sight of it. Well, we stared up at the Bleachers for a few minutes and couldn't see anything and no one came back. So then we decided to head to the Tower. That's were we found Jules.

At last report (beginning of May) Juliet was making her way back towards Winnipeg and got to about the Morris area when she turned back around and headed back to Minnesota - lots of small lakes east of Grand Forks and north of Bemidji.  Haven't had an update since then.

Lilith died in mid-November on her wintering grounds in Arkansas.  They found her remains so it wasn't a case of transmitter failure but I haven't heard whether or not a cause of death was determined (or could be determined).

Light is a bit dim at this location, but looks like Beau in the tuppernest and Jules hanging out at the edge of camera range ...  These two shouldn't be affected by the weather at all today, they are pretty well tucked under cover

Forecast for Winnipeg

Day - Overcast with rain in the afternoon. High of 19C. Winds from the ESE at 10 to 15 km/h. Chance of rain 60%.
Night - Overcast with thunderstorms. Fog overnight. Low of 10C. Breezy. Winds from the East at 10 to 20 km/h shifting to the NNE after midnight. Chance of rain 90% with rainfall amounts near 12.7 mm possible.

Dates we know about for Beau and Jules ....

up to May 2 - Beau and Jules were near/at/on the tuppernest but did not look to be incubating though sometimes at night they would hang out in the tuppernest with their egg(s)

May 2 - Beau and Jules look to have begun incubation on who know how many eggs though 4 is likely based on past experience

May 29 - Day 27 by our estimates
June 1 - Day 30 = very estimated start of hatching date

Hi RCF,

You're photos of Beau are much clearer than mine. Another way to tell it is Beau, is that his head and cheeks are so black, there really isn't any mylar bar, I finally figured that out this year, now I can tell if it is him right away.

The first two shots you have are at the Bleachers, the third is at the Diner.

There are still 2 chicks in the tuppernest that I can be sure of but at times they seemed way too active to just be two chicks and I wondered if there might be a third newly added into the mix ...

The WW pair have been off the chicks today too for periods of time - Beau to hoover around the tuppernest (not in the tuppernest which really really needs some housecleaning) and Jules to sit up high and glare a the world.

Saw Beau perched at the corner of the Diner on my way to the car after work yesterday.  Thought 'I'm going to try for a picture this time' since I still had my camera in my purse from our weekend excursions.  Turned it on, zoomed in, crap! wrong flash setting.  Changed setting, zoomed in (again), crap! wrong shutter setting.  By the time I had it set up to take a long distance photo, on a bright day, against a blue sky, Beau got bored and did a beau-tiful glide off the Diner and out of site.

Still seeing bits of birdie strewn about from time to time, but not as much as last year.  I guess most of the meals are eaten at the nest site now.  At least he still visits us from time to time though.  :)

Jules doesn't like me right now  ;D

Was able to move the tuppernest back within camera range and in the process Jules managed to scratch me up a bit (legs and arms) but no worse than at banding time and it was well worth it to be able to get a better look at the chicks!  And they are very pretty little chicks, all three of them  ;)

She's a great mom and doing all the things she's suppose to do.  We know she is a captive-bred bird which, if she is an escaped falconry bird might mean that she's more, let's say "comfortable" standing up to a human because she's had a lot of hands-on interaction with them.  If she was a captive-bred bird but purposely raised to be released to the wild, she would be like every other wild peregrine, she just grew up in a different environment from ours.  There are lots of other females that won't get out of their nestboxes when banders come to "borrow" their chicks for a wee while, its nice to have one here too!  And hopefully we will know her background someday.

With the tuppernest within camera range, was able to watch Jules feed the chicks four times this morning - 0611h, 0733h, 1103h and 1208h - she did a great job all the chicks got fed, including one that is obviously a day, maybe two behind the others.  Not a problem at this age, they grow so rapidly that in another few days they will all be the same size and at the same stage of development.

So far today at WW ...

0341h - first meal
0821h - second meal

Jules is on the chicks most of the time ... this morning they have been very squirmy so they have been keeping her from resting while brooding them ...
Title: Re: West Winnipeg - 2013 / June
Post by: The Peregrine Chick on June 09, 2013, 11:35
these chicks are very active, or rather squirmy given their age ...

0544h - first meal
0707h - second meal
0957h - third meal

Looks like Beau is doing what Ivy usually does which is stuffing his kids ... this is good, food at this site has not always been so abundant but this isn't really so surprising, given the stress that this site puts the adults and young under.  One for instance is that the adult on duty with the chicks is almost always awake and alert which is not something we see at McKenzie Seeds or at the Radisson - there the incubating/brooding adult does nap/cat-nap while on the eggs/chicks.

Like the Radisson birds, Beau and Jules (mostly Jules since she is with them most) have been off the chicks a lot this morning.  And its not because they are defending the site, they are perched either just a few inches or a couple of feet away from the chicks, but the chicks are uncovered ...

I'm going to provide chronologies for full days here I think, I've been doing them like the Radisson and McKenzie Seeds sites but they have cams you all can see so a bit later today I'll post the full chronology for yesterday so you can follow along with this pair better.  If we have other nests in the province (Brandon Tower for example) and we manage to get a camera on them, I'll do the same thing there.

Just so you know the 3 chicks are fine, had their first meal at 0557h delivered by Beau and their second by Jules starting at 0904h.

Probably not yet because even though we can see them well enough for monitoring sake, the image isn't close/clear enough for viewing.  However, we do hope to move the chicks at banding at which point we shouldn't have any problems with captures.

Jules is trying to get the kids under her at the moment but she or the chicks haven't quite got the "mum-brella" think worked out yet ... she's covering them but she's not actually shading them from the sun so it makes me think of hanging out on the beach on a warm (not hot) day with a blanket wrapped around you ... ahhhh, finally, now she has her back to the sun, wings extended and the squirmies all "shuggled" into a suitable formation under her ...

Holy cats these chicks have eaten well this morning!!

0157h - first meal of June 15th
0353h - second meal
0535h - third meal
0746h - fourth meal

Jules is mostly off the chicks during the day and night (one of our cams can see in low light) but she keeps them company.  Looking back at the recordings, looks like she is right on schedule, her youngest chick appears to have just turned 10 days old.

The West Winnipeg kids just made a break for it ... chick one left the tuppernest at 1526h, chick two at 1841h and our smallest chick was not going to be left behind and followed at 1847h.  Sigh, now they too get to wander out of camera range ...  ::)

Since the chicks went over the tuppernest wall yesterday afternoon, I have only been able to track the adults and a couple of times little peeks at chicks.  As they get more mobile over the next couple of days hopefully I will see more of them.  One adult seems to near/with them at all times so that is at least a comforting thought ... until I see all three of them on camera again though, well, I'll just have to be patient ...

Little terrors have more places to hide out-of-camera range than within camera range!!  Know all three are fine though because they all popped into view yesterday evening just after 1830h.  They were in camera range more last night and look to be a bit more active at night than during the day, but that is based on one night's post-escape viewing, so we'll have to see over the next little while ...

Chicks diddy-bopped into view a few times overnight and this morning and they all look great - fuzzy white like the McKenzie Seeds chicks (though drier) with just the start of flight feathers showing, less than the Radisson chicks though since they are a few days younger.  They are roaming as well, 1/3 of the time I can't see any of them or any parts of them the rest of the time I can see a foot or a body or whole bodies but they are roaming like the Radisson chicks are.

The West Winnipeg chicks have been banded and moved to their new accommodations.  Three females - one a bit larger than the other two but all healthy and growing very well.  Jules was not pleased when we took her chicks as you might imagine but this time the only blood that was shed was ours and due to the chicks not her!  She is an excellent mother except for her choice of nestsites ...

Oops, sorry, yes, Beau and Jules are taking care of the kids.  Because we could get access to them at banding age, they were young enough to "move" rather than "remove".  They now have time to imprint on the new location before fledging in 3+ weeks and because there are three of them they shouldn't fledge before they are ready to go.

Am I right in assuming that the new location of the 3 banded females must be close to where the parents had been nesting with their chicks, TPC? I'm very glad to hear that the project takes the privacy agreement seriously. That is as it should be.

But I do wonder when the relocation happened. If it was a day or two ago, it would have been nice to read about it. Was it this morning? Before 11:30? If so, I can fully appreciate the word would not have gone out. Life happens and we some times have no control over events.

However if it was a day or two ago, and we had been notified, I could have saved money on gas and perhaps spent my time with Pam in a more productive manner.

No, we did not band them this morning, we like many other people had plans for the long weekend, so we spent a very long day doing all our peregrine work so that we could enjoy some time "off" knowing all the chicks were safe and settled.

And as a point of order, we are not required to publicize or provide prior public notice as to when or where we will be banding the chicks as bandings are not events that are open to the public.  With the webcams at the Radisson and McKenzie Seeds however, we have been able to take advantage of the loophole the cams provide to tap into the feed and stream the bandings live - allows us to share more than we normally would be able to without further impacting the birds or what we need to get done.  Our other sites we comment on because we know most people are interested in all the birds we have in the province.  If, however, this becomes an issue, we may have to do what Ohio does which is to discuss only the sites with webcams and provide a report on other sites at year's end.

Thanks for the explaination Tracy.
I and others are fully aware that you do not need to offer any justification for what you do regarding the birds.

My only point was that if more people knew what was going on, as it was going on, the more streamlined the whole event could be.

There is a wealth of people out there that is  so very much committed to the birds.  I hope you involve them and use them.

Beau and Jules are doing great with the move, its like they have always been there.  They are defending the roof as well and the chicks haven't ventured from the nestbox from what we can see so they aren't feeling neglected or scared enough to need their parents' company.  Usually one or the other adult is parked on the edge of the building within sight of the chicks in the box.

Been away from the boards and cams for a while, office is moving to a new location and so has been crazy busy!  Reading this thread, however, explains the sentinels stationed on two corners of the building whereas in June I'd be lucky to see a quick flyby once a week.  They were doing a lots of screeching last week when my coworkers and I decided to dine outdoors.  Lots of peregrine poop and bits of birdy floating around as well.  The kids are very well fed by the look of things  ;D  It's wonderful to know that I may get the chance to see a falcon fledge in person before our office relocates!

Thank you TPC, Dennis and all the others who keep us up to date on ALL of our birds, not just the webcam stars. It is greatly appreciated!

On Saturday, we went for a drive to check out the falcons. Easily found Beau, but he was sitting in the middle of the north wall. This is not where we normally find him. Also I could have sworn that as we approached there was a falcon on the NW corner, but none there as we looked closer. Then we drove away and as we were headed back home, there was a bird on the NW corner and Beau still in the middle of the North side. So either Jules was playing hide and seek with us (ie feeding the kids), or one of the younguns decided to check out the edge.

I counted 4 on the walls this morning - at least 2 were chicks though likely one adult and all there chicks.  Winds were light at the time which is a good thing, their fledge site has very strong prevailing winds (usually west to east).  All the nestsites in West Winnipeg are windier more often even than the Radisson.  Radisson is loudier and more problematic - more swirl than the winds in West Winnipeg.  Means the West Winnipeg chicks will have to learn to fledge with more consistent winds than the Radisson chicks - there is no place to really get away from the wind at any of the West Winnipeg nestsites.  Different skill sets for different nest sites that's for sure.

Okay, either these chicks are ready to go any minute or they had visitors from downtown. I drove by the diner this morning about 8:30 (ya, late for work and in no hurry) to see four birds on the building. One each on the NW and NE corners (often see the parents in these positions) and two more on the East side, with middle birdie flapping like crazy, looking quite strong, and somebody (maybe more than one of them) calling and making a lovely-to-hear racket.  :)

Considering the kind of contortions it takes to get a look at all four sides of that building while driving, we are probably just lucky we didn't crash into each other!!  Next time I'll wave just in case  :)

Was in the area to do some shopping after work and remembered to bring the binocs.  Stood and watched for awhile - one of the parents on the north-east corner and one of the chicks further along on the north edge.  Just missed the other parent flying off, probably to get some dinner.

I see them every morning now on the way to work.  'Tis the season to watch out for crazy bird watchers, waving and looking skyward and possibly baking cakes ::)

Some pics from about 6 pm.

There are two chicks, one can clearly be seen, the other is ducked down/laying down. Can't see the chicks when up close. These pics are taken from quite a distance.

Do these chicks have transmitters? I think I can just make out the wires, especially on the one that is ducked down.. Or is this part of the video tech by the nest box?
Title: Re: West Winnipeg - 2013 / July
Post by: The Peregrine Chick on July 16, 2013, 22:15
So folks know, there is a ledge on the inside of the roof wall around the nestbox so the chicks can be on the roof, or up in the nestbox or up a bit higher on this ledge or up on the roof wall (as seen in Dupre's photos).  When we build this type of nestbox for use in West Winnipeg, we make sure there is this inside ledge because the wind outside of downtown is more constant and can be quite strong and these rooftops are wide open.  With the inside ledge, the chicks can see over the wall but still  be mostly out of the wind.

Between 6:30 and 7 p.m. you could find Beau on the NE corner, Jules on the SW corner, and chicks on the west wall....
Although, when I was taking pictures of the chick from below, Beau did a fly over of the little park I was in and went straight back to his corner.

Nice to see them not fledged yet ... they are big female chicks and the longer they get to grow and strengthen their wings before fledging the better!
As of today, they are 42 days old.

Dennis had the same experience and couldn't find them anywhere else either.  But likely the winds have them down on the roof behind the walls because Jules was on-site and our experiences with Jules are that she doesn't leave the chicks during the day so if they had fledged, she should be with them, not still hanging out ... but we'll be checking on them periodically and I'm sure you will too Cooper!!  :)

Wohoo SUCCESS!!!

Out looking for the falcons at 6 pm. Nothing, no chicks, no adults.

About half an hour later, spotted one chick on the NE corner. My husband dropped me and my chair off and went shopping. I set up, in a very breezy spot and froze in that wind. But, while I was watching, Jules showed up flying overhead. She just hung in the air like a kite, occasionally swooping around then hanging again. Beau showed up and perched on the NW corner. All this took a while (sometime after 7 pm), the next thing I knew, there were 3 peregrines in the air and another chick showed up on the NE corner and kakked at them. Jules flew lead, and Beau flanked the chick. Jules and yhe chick wheeled around and flew back to the east wall. Jules followed the chick in on the landing and all landed safely. ;D

Was checking the winds speeds out in the western part of the City and the base wind speeds are basically within the same range in West Winnpeg as they are downtown, but the gusts at Fort Whyte and the Airport (most westerly weather stations I can find) show that the gusts are perhaps consistently a bit higher, say 5, 5-and-a-bit km/h higher.  But still, nice weather for fledging!

We sure were. Fledge from Thursday is flying well and landing well.
Birdie number two fledged this morning sometime. Not to a great location, but it should be able to make it's way back, might have to go from building to building, but certainly doable.

Number three still on the roof and the parents are both accounted for.

Two questions bccs ...

1.  About what time approximately did chick 2 go?
2.  How difficult is it to be able to see the coloured tape on the chicks' bands?  The site is higher than McKenzie Seeds and the chicks have a wide ledge around the roof to sit on so I know it can be difficult to read band numbers but I wondered about being able to see the coloured tape on their silver bands ..

Time - somewhere before 10 am. I got there then and the only juvie to leave from the ledge is the one that fledged on Thursday.

No bands, he/she was hunkered down most of the time although there was some grand flapping.

Good news is that Dennis showed up with the big lens. He might have been able to capture one.

Wonderful morning at WW location with bccs and Linder.  Saw parents flying.  Saw one chick flying and doing well.  Heard one chick on the roof when a parent came in and next thing we knew the chick that we believe fledged first, flew in with a lot of Kaking.  The parent we believe was Beau flew out there very quickly.
There is another chick on a lower building roof. I think the building is only about  4 stories high. Saw him/her flapping wings a few times but most times he/she was lying down.  As bccs said it must have fledged some time before she arrived there.  I arrived about 10 min after she got there.
Dennis and Wowzer showed up and Wowzer is all set up and ready to take pictures.

Rain is getting heavier in the west side of town, constant but not sheeting yet.  The chicks won't fly in the rain if its more than light, so wherever the chicks are sitting right now is probably where they will stay until the storm has passed.  Looking at the radar the edge of the storm has just reached us so it will be awhile yet before anyone will be flying again ...

It was Jules that was on the corner watching over the kids, could tell by the head markings from a photo...she never leaves them ! Beau showed 30 min later and Jules moved to the nest box corner and he to the other end.
Some calling from the chick on the low roof but no action...so don't know who fledged today ?

My husband and I were in the area and watching between 4:30 and 5:00. All 5 falcons were were confirmed at the same location at 5:00.

When we first arrived we checked out the north side of the building and didn't see much. Next we took a drive out to see if we could see much of the west wall. One chick in the NW corner, but as we headed out I was sure I spotted one on the south sign. On our return we parked across from the south wall. Both adults were on the south sign. Beau sitting casually and Jules was having a early dinner. By this point it is starting to rain. One of the chicks decides to fly down close to Jules and beg for food. After a few minutes Jules moves away from the chick, taking dinner with her, and then moves further still. Beau was just watching the goings on. Then another chick shows up on the south wall. We could see four birds at once. Well, now it is really raining, so we took one last drive out and confirmed that the third chick was still in the NW corner. All birds looked well.

Could only see one bird on the building this morning but did see two flying just south of there playing touch-toe-tag. Seemed a bit out of character for the adults at this time of the year but also seemed way way too aerobatic for the young newly fledged but someone was playing ... maybe a chick.and an adult ...

Saw at least 2 of the chicks, maybe 3. Did not see either Beau or Jules.

When I arrived, one chick flew off the nest box building flew over the park then circled around and around, drifting away, then flew up the south face of the Bleachers and landed at the top. About 15min later one chick flew over me and landed half way down the west wall from the nest box. Didn't stay long. Flew up, circled the building then travelled south, circling further and further away, till she was just a dot. Just as she was disappearing, a chick flew off the south side of the building, flew over me and landed on the NW corner where the nest box is. Stayed all of 30 seconds then took off east.

I don't know if the first chick was one of the 2 chicks I saw later.

On the way past this morning, could see 3 "spots" on the building - 2 looked like chicks, third seemed smaller so perhaps Beau since all the kids are females ...  didn't see anyone else on buildings or on the wing ...

Nice day for young falcons to improve their flight skills ....

Going from point A to B by way of West Wpg this afternoon found 1 chick on the top of the bleachers and another some distance west and dad keeping an eye on them from where they hatched...Jules couldn't be seen and knowing her nature (sticking to the chicks)...perhaps # 3 has fledged and she is watching over her ????

Had dinner with a friend this evening in the West Winnipeg area. Always carry my binocs with me in my car. Was able to spot 1 of the "girls" on the northeast corner of the nest box building & another "girl" on the northwest corner. The "girl" on the northeast corner of the building flew away & then returned not long after. The "girl" on the northwest corner remained in the same place pretty much all evening, without flying anywhere. Maybe this is the one who hasn't yet fledged? :-\ Looked all over but did not spot Jules or Beau or the 3rd "girl".

Dennis reported this am being able to see one chick in the nestbox (head bobbing so likely eating), one chick south of the building, Beau on the SE corner and Jules at the Crow's Nest watching in the general direction of Beau and the kids.  Likely means that little girl 3 is in the area and Mom is watching over her ...

Dennis and I decided to do some tuppernest site cleaning last night ( :-X) and then went chick hunting.  We thought we had two chicks at/in the nestbox and Beau in his usually corner and Jules over at the Crow's Nest but couldn't find chick three and we did go look - high, low and under.  In the end we took some time to just watch the kids for a bit before heading off.  Then it occurred to us that "Beau" was a wee bit too dark ... so squealing tyres and a couple of two-wheel turns and we were close enough to get a good look with binocs and with seconds to spare, there was a flash of light on a packpack before the bird hopped down onto the roof.    Then the little terrors did the we're-so-cute-three-peas-in-a-pod thing ... like they couldn't have done that two hours earlier?  Anywho, got work done and found all three chicks.  Jules was watching them all but from far enough away they couldn't bug her for food and Beau was in his usual anonymous location.  At some point we'll figure out where he hangs out watching but given that these birds can see very well for a couple of miles, it's going to take more time I suspect.

Thank for the report, TPC.  I usually see at least one bird on my drive to work, but without binocs, can't tell if it's a chick or parent.  The other day when I thought I saw four birds, I went back after work and using my binocs, saw that one of the "birds" was a thingie on the roof (looked like a camera ???).  At that time, there were two birds, both chicks.

Sure hope the parents are able to teach the kids how to hunt before the snow falls :P  Brrrr!

We watched the 2 if not 3 of the chicks very nimbly soaring and landing after work today - when you consider how short a time they have been flying their progress is remarkable!!  They have been flying the same length of time as the McKenzie Seeds birds for those who were about to go off and count  ;)

Sure hope the parents are able to teach the kids how to hunt before the snow falls :P  Brrrr!

These ladies will be hunting by the end of August no problem, then there is lots of food around as birds start to stage for migration so they will have plenty of opportunities to practice their skills before migrating themselves ...

Just got back from a short drive in the rain. Beau was on the south sign of the Diner. Two birds on the south side of the bleachers. Could definitely make out one was a chick, the other was hard to tell, with it's damp back towards us. Will have to review my photos to be sure.

Not sure who or where from, but this morning there was a bird circling the Safeway store at Portage and Cavalier, kakking away as it circled (reminded me of Vesper). It was too high for me to make out whether adult or chick without binocs (and don't usually take them with me when I go for groceries). Certainly wasn't expecting to see or hear a falcon. Usually there are gulls, pigeons and crows around, but this morning there wasn't another bird in sight. It headed off towards the river, out of sight.

Was on Beverley Street last night when 3 PFs flew right over my head making all kinds of racket. I have heard them almost every time we are on that street. Earlier in the spring there were two adults getting "friendly" on top of one of the Elm trees. I'm assuming these are the Wpg West birds.
So nice now that I never see the Radisson family on top of the Delta anymore!

Actually CB I believe what you saw are merlins on Beverley there are a couple of pairs in that immediate area that have young fledging right now.  The fact that you saw them "getting friendly" this spring in a tree is an additional clue that the birds you are wstching are merlins.  The young look similar to peregrines particularly in flight and the two species sound very much alike but merlins are smaller and the live in/among trees.  They are great fun to watch them - they are amazing woodland specialists!

I did not know to go anywhere than here good to know where the youngsters are

Usually I post here and in more detail then post something on Twitter if it seems appropriate for a tweet. Not much going on right now that we can see at the nestsites or on camera, so it was definitely tweat-able.   That day I couldn't access the internet and then couldn't access the forum (not a forum glitch) but I could reach Twitter on my smartphone.  So I reversed the order and forgot to go back to post on the Forum when I could get online the next day.  Twitter is new for us and so far it is working well, so for those who want to follow along on both, help yourselves, but if you follow here on the Forum, you won't miss anything - or rarely as was the case this time  :)

One chick on the nestbox at the Diner - or it looked like a chick as I drove by.  Only that single bird though no sign of either the adults but checking my notes it looks like this is Beau's and Jules' normal routine at this time of the year.  Come September they do tend to come back and hang out more intensely just before they migrate.

Oh, I've seen them quite regularly on the diner. This morning, one adult on the "u" south side. Last night at about 6:00 p.m. one adult on letters on east side. Previous to that (forget which day) one adult on letters on East side and what appeared to be a chick on the northeast corner. So they're hanging about.

One day I thought I had seen two chicks on the diner, but that was on a day you'd reported the chicks in Brandon, so perhaps it was both adults.

Whoever they all are it makes my day to see them as I pass. :)

Looks like one of the WW girls may have died in North Dakota.  Her transmitter data is showing a distinctive pattern that usually isn't good news.  We have made arrangements for some support on the ground to track her down so I hope to have more news soon.

Can confirm today that we did in fact lose Koh-i-Noor in North Dakota.  I don't know where exactly yet, but I do know that her cause of death is unknown, she was found near a fence.  There will be a necropsy so more news when I get it.

So far we know of only 2 deaths among the hatchlings this year - that is far below the 50-70% we need to expect and the migration season is only just beginning.  Hopefully we won't have many more such announcements to make but statistically, unfortunately, we probably will.

Couldn't agree more Cooper, particularly since the sisters did so very very well at fledging.

As I recall, Beau typically hangs out in town in the fall while Jules goes wandering.  Last year he was last spotted on September 27th ... and he was the first bird to arrive back this spring on March 27th ...

Unfortunately, news from the B&B is that the work will continue for a couple more years apparently.  This year was a great year once we had them transplanted to the nestbox, the girls didn't have a single problem, it was kinda scary.

We do finally have approval to block off the horrible nestsite next spring and that hopefully will send Beau & Jules off to the transplant site.  But given difficulties in previous years, I'm going to wait until we actually have it blocked off before I'm happy.

But that is still 6 months away and we should enjoy that we have only had two mortalities (that we know of) this year and not borrow trouble from next year ...  ;)

I rolled by earlier than that and had a bird that looked like Beau on the "s" ... looking out it was just his breast that was visible and it looked smaller.  He does like to ply Jules with food so she came in to eat and he went off to find more ...

Yesterday afternoon going by, I had two birds, both with breasts that were too light to be chicks, one bird larger than the other so pretty darn sure it was Jules (south side "v") and Beau (on the south side blue "box").

I caught the same view at about 5:30 yesterday evening!

This morning again two adults, this time smaller bird (assume Beau) on south side and larger (Jules?) on the east side. It seemed weird to see them on different sides of the building - almost like they were ignoring each other, giving each other the silent treatment.  :)

Actually, even though West Winnipeg suffered a loss, unfortunately a female, it was a successful season for this pair of birds, considering how it started!  All I can write is, these birds absolutely know how to create a, "Soap Falconopera"!
All the best to our birds and we look forward to your return!

Who knows Allikat, perhaps you might see another one of the WW girls in Saskatchewan next year if we are lucky  :)

That made for an early morning for you Cooper - good sighting though, nice to know they are still around.  Seeing all the geese in the fields outside of town and as we had our first frost warning last night, perhaps we shan't be seeing this pair for too too much longer  ... however much we might like to ...

Just one birdie this morning as I made my way into work. Beau, I think. Although I'm not 100% sure about that identification. Dirty white bib but the rest of his belly seemed quite a bit darker than I would have thought. Maybe just the light.  On the "p", east side of diner at 8:15.

In case it helps, I often notice the lighter tip on the juveniles' tails more easily or perhaps more often than I notice the lighter band on the adults' tails.  Still not easy while you are driving ...  :)

Had a look through Dennis' photos first, well, because he photos are so much better than mine  ::)  Keep in mind that these are excellent photos taken by an experienced photographer with hi-tech equipment and a steady hand.  Driving a car on a busy road during rush hour trying not to hit other motorists and possibly walkin-n-textin pedestrians is another thing entirely.  But it should help some I hope.

adult tail tips - 2012 Radisson (http://www.pbase.com/photosbydennis/radisson_2012)

I chose galleries because you can see their tails in lots of positions and that both chicks and adults have light coloured tips, just that the chicks' are often bigger than the adults and often the adults have "wear" on their tails so they look a bit ragged and that often makes it hard to see the light colour that is there.  Just as being able to see that a breast looks white or gold will tell you adult or chick but only if you can see it, the same applies to tail tips.

Update on our two surviving girls from West Winnipeg from the last couple of weeks ...

Andamooka - has been ranging from the south basin of Lake Manitoba south to Devils Lake and up/down the Red River Valley in Manitoba and North Dakota/Minnesota.  The distance from her most northerly point to most southerly point over this period is over 300km.

La Peregrina - not travelling with her sister at all.  Her explorations have been from Lake Manitoba east to the Whiteshell and south not quite to the US border.  Distance from two most distant points in her travels is 200km, so she's still covering a lot of ground.

Neither of these birds has been returning to Winnipeg so the birds we are seeing in West Winnipeg are likely Beau and Jules.  If a chick has been observed then it's either a Radisson chick, maybe an HSC chick or perhaps a chick on its travels from North Dakota - remember that is how we first met Sandy and Smiley as well as Luck from Brandon.

It's nice that you are still seeing at least Beau.  :)  I don't really know how long the west Winnipeg birds stay before they decide to migrate.  Last year Sept 21st was the last time I saw Brooklyn and Hurricane was here until the 2nd of October. Brooklyn seems to be staying a bit longer this year, but he was back a week later than he was in 2012.

As I mentioned in the Brandon Tower thread, migration is underway for our birds - one of the West Winnipeg girls was tracked over Kansas last week - that is too far south for a little autumn adventure, she is on her way.  I wasn't going to post until I had information on who it is.  The bird started heading south from north of Winnipeg so I'm assuming it's La Peregrina because she was the one still in the province, but Andamooka could have returned from the US for a last visit ... so have requested more information.  Because we were talking migration on the Tower thread and I mentioned the WW chick, I figured I had better post what little I had heard here too.

When I get proper information I will post it.

It is our little pearl, La Peregrina, who has taken the lead on migration this year.  At last report, the other four wild chicks with transmitters hadn't started to "move" yet.  For those who don't remember my last update on who was where ...  Andamooka was the one who was already in North Dakota, La Peregrina was still hanging out between Lake Manitoba and the Whiteshell.  From the current report, looks like La Peregrina just decided one morning that that was day and she headed south, leap-frogging her sister and is now half-way to Mexico.  Haven't heard but she may even have leap-frogged her older sister Juliet who has been in ND much of this summer as well.  Will be interesting to see if she keeps on going or stops for awhile.  As for how far south she will go ... last year's three chicks didn't leave the continental USA whereas the year before, one of the Brandon chicks bombed across the Gulf of Mexico from Louisiana (if I recall correctly) to Mexico then almost immediately worked his way back north to Texas.

A bit of general update on WW girls ...

La Peregrina is still working her way south - only one state between her and the Gulf of Mexico now but Andamooka is still hanging out in North Dakota.

Juliet (2012) has joined her younger sister on the move, she's back in Iowa and though I'm not sure, I think she's not too far away from where she spent most of last winter ... will have to see if she keeps moving or hangs out again.

Andamooka has started her migration and definitely working her way south now but she is more than a few states behind her sister.

La Peregrina is our speed demon this year - she's reached the Gulf of Mexico.  Now to see if she slows a bit or keeps up her pace and direction.

Title: Re: West Winnipeg - 2013 / Oct - Dec

Dennis' visitor is none other than Beatrix!   She is a 2011 wild-hatch from the Radisson and the first of Ivy and Princess' kids that we know of to have survived through the whole first year.  We suspect that McDermot (2012 Radisson) might have done as well but his transmitter is faulty and we haven't had a "beep" (or a report) of him since his first winter so we can't be sure.

Beatrix's nestmates were Carson, Cade and Fyfe.  Fyfe died at fledging.  Carson got up close and personal with the Hydro building but didn't have serious injuries and Beatrix found herself at the bottom of the old Eaton's smokestack.  She was retrieved and returned to the Radisson along with her brother Carson.  Their other brother Cade was funnily enough hanging out on the wall right above the nestbox and watched their return with great interest.  After that, they managed to stay out of trouble.

Interestingly, it sounds as though she continues to be small female ... while Dennis was watching her she was snatching small birds (or perhaps even insects) out of the air with amazing skill and speed, something only smaller birds tend to be able to do.  No idea where she has been or what she has been "up" to in the last couple of years, but she looks great (and like her mother).  And yes, I'm sure that Dennis will post photos online when he has a chance.

Dennis was looking through his photos and it was bugs Beatrix was hunting so diligently - Giant Water Bug (Lethocerus americanus) in fact - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lethocerus_americanus

I thought they would be kind of nasty tasting so I talked to a wetland naturalist and she too thought they would be bitter tasting.  Obviously not, or not to Beatrix at least, from Dennis' description, she was targeting the GWBs specifically and this location has lots of other food options available for her if she wanted it.

It sure would be interesting to know what she has been up to. Did she not have a transmitter, TPC? I thought she did...

No she didn't have a transmitter, she fell into the old Eaton's smokestack and the vet/rehabbers cleared her for re-release but we didn't want to take the risk that she had a minor soft tissue injury that would have been exacerbated were we to have fitted her with a transmitter.  Carson we knew took a bump from hitting the Hydro building because he did have some blood in his nares but he showed no problems while he was in care and when he was re-released with Beatrix he was raring to go, but again, not taking the chance.  McDermot was the Radisson chick that got a transmitter the next year even though he too went down but he didn't hit anything, rather he just "dribbled" down a couple of storeys onto a flat surface when he didn't make a landing on the corner of a roof.  No hit, no great height and a very soft landing.  We scooped him up and he got a transmitter and off he went.

Also, interesting to hear of her eating Great Water Bugs. Is that very unusual for a PF, TPC? :-\

Eating insects, no, particularly if they are plentiful.  Hack release in the early 1990s in West Winnipeg there was a huge influx of grasshoppers in Winnipeg, they were on buildings, sidewalks, lawns, heck downtown on Portage Avenue in front of stores.  The chicks hacked release that year ate so many grasshoppers their pellets were green and filled with the grasshoppers carapaces - made them look almost sparkly in the sun.  As for giant water bugs, that is a new one for me, but then, unless there are remains in pellets that you can find OR someone like Dennis can catch them on film, I don't know how easy it would be to document it, so maybe it's more common than one would think.

Okay, Dennis and I have been looking a photos again and we aren't so sure it is Beatrix but the lighting and the angle is poor so we aren't sure if we had one black banded bird on the Diner on the 8th and Beatrix on the 9th.  We are sure about the 9th, it's the 8th sighting that is making us suspicious.  On the third hand, how likely is it that we would have two "new" black banded birds in the same territory within 18 hours of each other ... at this time of year, possible though maybe not likely.  Rain or no rain (rain is forecast for Friday, Saturday and Sunday here in Winnipeg) we are going to be keeping our eye on the WW territory in case we can catch sight of the bird(s) again before she/they bolt ...

If I had to guess, I would think that perhaps the bird you are seeing is the Global bird Kinderchick ... if it is Smiley, that would make sense because we know that he has been around all summer in and out of the downtown area.  But, who knows, Beatrix might have made a trip home.

My suspicion is that all of our resident birds - Hurricane & Brooklyn, Princess & Ivy, Cowboy & Joli and Beau & Jules have left on migration.  I suspect that the birds we are seeing now are visitors passing through ... but without a closer look at the birds, there is no way to confirm, but it has been the way in the past - residents move out, transients move in for a short while then follow everyone else south.

Returning from a road trip ( Oct 8 ) we decided to stop and check on West Wpg. to see if we could spot the bird that is still hanging around. With a bird spotted both Tracy and I agreed (for once) that it appeared to be a different bird. Late day and bad light only revealed that the bird did in fact have a black band on the left leg.
The next day found a bird in the same area...and confirmed that it was in fact Beatrix, sideways Y over 4 from the Radisson hatch 2011.
The chances of having 2 birds with black bands on the left leg in the same area are slim...but you know how it goes.
I'm going to say chances are that it was the same bird.

Yes, the breast seems darker. In fact all the birds that I've been seeing there (and I would say that there have been at least two, one larger than the other) in the past couple of weeks seemed to have "dirtier" looking breasts than Beau and Jules. I said dirtier because rather than "rusty", they look greyer to me (like they've been playing in dust or not using Tide for their laundry)  :)

Originally, when I assumed it was Beau and Jules I was seeing, I figured the less than bright white chests must be their non-breeding/winter season moult. It didn't occur to me that I might be seeing different birds because there really had not been any significant period that I hadn't seen them.

Andamooka is Texas/Louisiana area (not with Bogart - its a large area) and La Peregrina is in eastern Mexico - remember, she was the first to head off and she has been hanging out in the same relative area as where she came ashore I believe (she flew across the Gulf to Mexico).

Juliet (2012 West Winnipeg) has decided to return to her overwintering grounds in the central US states again this year.

Thank you for the update on these and the other chicks. It is wonderful to hear good news about all of them. They are amazing brave birds to fly so far alone, not all that long after leaving the nest.  :o

Hmmm... Don't know who (or even what), but somebirdy was visiting the letters on south side diner this morning. I was stuck in traffic so was able to watch as he/she sat on the "t" for a while and then took a little flight over to the "r". Definitely falcon like in profile, both sitting and flying, but had more buffy brown colour than I would have thought for a Peregrine. Although that could have been effect of sun on his feathers as the sun was indeed shining on him.

I checked the recorder for yesterday and yup, Smiley was still downtown, not for long but he was there.  I'm not surprised he's made a trip out to the Diner - that was where Dennis and I first caught sight of him and confirmed his band number back in 2010.  He arrived before Beau, then got kicked out of the area a bit more than a week later, and he moved over to HSC.  He wasn't even a year old when he turned up here, bit like T-Rex, Trey and Ivy actually.  T-Rex never had any intention of going anywhere else, Trey remained a bachelor until he got his chance at the Radisson and though Ivy had two mates before Princess, neither of those pairs had successful nests.  Considering how successful these three males have been, could bode well for Smiley so long as he chooses an unoccupied nestsite to claim.  We know he's not unappealing to the ladies - Joli's been pretty smitten with him "married" though she is ...
