No peregrines as of yet, but the Ravens have started to build a nest on the fire escape on the west side of the McKenzie building.........same spot as last year. ::) There is no doubt in my mind that when the falcons return from their winter holiday they will definitely harass the ravens until they leave.

That will hopefully make it easier to spot the peregrines when they do return!
Last year there were 6 or 8 eggs in that nest as I recall, but they seemed too small and white for ravens (or crows for that matter) but I honestly don't see that many corvid eggs, parents are too protective and appear to prefer spots I would rather not try to reach :o
There should also not be anything nesting in the rooftop nestbox here or at the Tower site - Dennis and I put screening across the openings to keep the pigeons from taking up residence in the "off" season. Cleaning up after the winged KD is not a pleasant experience, particularly not in the hot summer sun! :P

The ravens have been hanging around the McKenzie building all winter. I have seen them perch under the black /green ledge on windy, snowy days, the same place where the peregrines cache their food. They also sit on the beacon lights on the very top of the roof. I haven't seen the pigeons on the McKenzie building very much but they seem to roost more on the Scotia building. The other day I watched the two ravens swoop over to the Scotia bldg and make the pigeons scatter in panic mode.....not sure if they would try and catch one or not. :-\

This sounds familiar :D there have been ravens visiting the Radisson nestbox this winter to pick through the remains of meals in the back of the nestbox. Bet the McKenzie cache sites are pretty clean at this point. ;)

I checked here yesterday......no falcons yet. It appears that someone has opened the door to the fire escape and pushed the ravens nest over to the far edge. I didn't see any ravens around, so they may have abandoned the nest.

I was in Brandon today and I got all excited because there was a birdie sitting on the very top of the lightning rod/flag pole on the McKenzie building. Well, it wasn't a peregrine but a Merlin. I also saw a hawk fly over the building with a couple of crows dive bombing it. Anyway seeing these birds is a good sign that our falcons should be home soon. :)

Our skies and our peregrines help us forget the cold in winter and the mosquitoes in summer.

Actually there are hundreds of Pigeons around downtown Brandon, you just don't see them, when it's so cold they tend to stay out of the cold in any building they can find a way into and to come out in flocks when the sun shines. Last year(2012) Brooklyn and Hurricane arrived near the end of March and the year before (2011)they were here about the 5th of April.

True Rose, I was comparing it to the peregrines' main hunting ground here right now where there are thousands - so many that last year we had three territorial pairs sharing the hunting ground. And I still keep remembering Alice and Zeus hanging out waiting and waiting and waiting and then poof, they were gone and on territory in Brandon and it took a thaw and south wind bringing in waterfowl.
I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that Brooklyn and Hurricane are already on their way home and that they will be winging into the nestbox about their usual time!

I thought that pigeons were as common as mosquitoes in Manitoba. Are there areas of Manitoba that don't have pigeons? (I mean south of the lakes)

Pigeons are an introduced species and primarily live near human activities - buildings, transportation (grain elevators), large institutions that have lots of connected buildings are great because they have lots of nooks and crannies and usually have industrial air intake/exhaust which makes it easy for them to survive in large numbers through our winters. If I'm not mistaken, other than in urban areas, pigeons in Manitoba aren't found north of the agricultural area of the province, so about as far north as Ashern I think.

I think Bev is right - Jim Duncan said something similar on the radio a couple of days ago, that there are raptors hung up about mid-US waiting for some weather systems to clear out before they start moving. Comparing migration numbers for this period in 2012 and 2013 there are definitely fewer birds on the move ... our birds were at least two weeks later than usual, so I would expect the Brandon birds to likewise be delayed ... and at last report, McDermot and Juliet weren't moving either ...

RCF has photos. She was in town about 1300hours, she couldn't get a band number, our lady wouldn't lift a leg but birdie has a beautiful salmon wash on her bib, and also a very full crop.

I am pretty sure it's Hurricane from the photo's I took, also from where she perched. :) She had a very full crop, so I think pigeon pie was for lunch. ;D I only saw the one peregrine.

I'm still a bit of a newbie when comes to telling birds apart. But I too only saw one bird. It was around 4 this afternoon, on the lamp pole. It think it's a little chilly for bare legs. Lol :-D

Welcome EcoGeek!! You may see Rose and I down around the McKenzie building or up on the Town Centre second level Parking area ( good place to see into the nest box and MTS tower ). We'll be the ones looking up and pointing to the sky or have a camera pointed at the sky. Glad to have another set of eyes looking out for the peregrines! 8)

RCF, I think you are bang on - even though she's "full" and puffed, that sure looks like Hurricane - by size, by the rufous on her breast (Brooklyn's so white at the start of the year) and there sure does look to be a smudged edge to her facial markings. Now we need band colours/numbers to confirm .... sorry for all the frozen fingers (from holding binoculars & cameras) over the next couple of weeks!

It's cold. How cold is it? It's colder than it's ever been on this day in Brandon. Early this morning, just before sunrise, temperatures dipped to -17.9 C, breaking the record of -16.7 C set back in 1965.
Although it should be warmer this afternoon — Environment Canada is calling for a high of -2, with sunny skies — the forecast for tonight calls for another record-breaking chill. Overnight, temperatures should fall to -19 C, breaking a record of -17.2 C that dates to 1962.
Today also holds a very different kind of record. It's the earliest date that 30 C has been recorded in Brandon, back in 1977. On the other hand, back in 1990, Brandon was in the middle of a three-day snowstorm that dropped nearly 20 cm of snow.
Warmer weather appears to be on the horizon — although a bit of snow is, too. Tomorrow should be sunny, with a high of 0 C, followed by more sun on Thursday and a high of 1 C. Friday will get up all the way to 3 C, although skies will be mixed.
Clouds are expected over the weekend, with a chance of either rain showers or flurries on both Saturday and Sunday. Highs are expected to be 4 C on Saturday, 2 C on Sunday. Flurries could continue into Monday, with a high of 2 C. Overnight lows through the weekend and Monday are expected to be a temperate -3 C or so.
A year ago today, it was 3.5 C in the afternoon, and -6.8 C was the low, with a trace of snow. The normal high for this time of year is 8 C; the normal low is -4 C.

I can agree with that! At 0800 this am down at Mckenzies it felt like the wind was coming off the North Pole and no birdie seen! I didn't stay long. At 1030 am she was eating pigeon pie, on the Scotia S in the sun.RCF got some really good photos but no legs yet. Right now the temp is minus 9. We are going down a little later and try for her Bands.

Our birdie wasn't showing any leg today, but that's not surprising since it wasn't all that warm with the wind blowing from the northwest. She had her toes covered with her skirt when she wasn't eating. ;D

I saw two peregrines today, one on the MTS tower and the other was eating on the McKenzie roof. They both have black bands on the right leg. I managed to get a part number for the bird on the tower.

I believe that these pics I took of this bird is not our female but the male that is here. The bird is not dark enough to be Hurricane.

Yes that's a 2 and a y. Rcf and I spent about 3 hours down town and I can tell you the wind is coming straight off an iceberg but I think she has some band numbers. I can tell you there are two falcons a male and a female :).

We have banded 8 birds with 2x over Y.
This sequence of bands is for males. We do we know we have one female who was banded as a male in this sequence (Hurricane) and maybe two (Hurricane's sib Chinook, status unknown). All the others are male - Brooklyn (survived), Max (unknown), Ty (survived), Tupper (unknown), Fate (unknown) and Mac (deceased).

That's me. RCF and Rose say that the female is doing all the things that Hurricane does and there is a Y on her band, however, there are differences in her feather patterns which could be because she is puffing out her feathers due to the cold but I'm not sure - you know me, I'm very cautious about identifications. So RCF and Rose are keeping a wickedly close eye on both birds in the hope that they will get a clearer band number (the female is not being wildly cooerative) to confirm that Hurricane is back and doing what she does best ... make our lives interesting!

Today, when Rose and I first got downtown, Brooklyn was on the Scotia sign with prey. He flew off with the prey and there was a mid-air tranfer with Hurricane. 8) He went to the east light and she took her gift to the Scotia sign to eat. When we left, Brooklyn was perched on the nest box ledge and Hurricane was on the east light.

That is the top of the wall that surrounds the lower roof (where the chicks have been put the last 2 years). You have to go east from 9th street to at least 8th street to even see the nest box. Isn't it amazing what illusions a camera can create. ;)

I like that shot with the wall in the foreground, you get a sense of depth, that the lower roof is actually there and large and that the nestbox is on the other side of it. Different perspectives are a good thing :)

Very, very interesting! What an illusion! I had no idea that long white thing under the nestbox in one of your photos, RCF, was actually the top edge of the lower wall! :o And like bcbird, I wondered how I had missed it before. Wonderful photo, RCF! :D

Hurricane has been spending a lot of time at the nest box in the last few days. I saw her perched on Thursday evening, then again this morning and she was there after work. Maybe she is thinking about laying an egg! ;D

You may be right RCF or it might be a bit early. Jules and Beau were back together on March 28th and they have just started to incubate today. Generally I count a minimum of three weeks from the time both birds are seen when estimating when eggs will be laid. If Hurricane and Brooklyn met up outside of town on their way in, they may have started courting but canoodling takes place when they get back on territory - have to know you have a home before you start playing house. One or both of the McKenzie Seeds birds were back on April 8th, so I think perhaps you have another week before they start ... but every pair is different and perhaps they were being secretive when they arrived, the weather did suck at the time. We will just have to wait and "see" what you see! :)

Good news, all that canoodling Hurricane and Brooklyn were doing has paid off - first egg is in the nestbox! Only Brooklyn was around when we made our brief visit to the rooftop today but the best sight was hooking up all the cameras and the first thing we see is one very dark (that means new) egg in the nestbox. Usual timing between egg layings would incubation to start early next week, probably no later than Wednesday but with warm/hot weather, they may be able to leave the eggs uncovered for longer in the sun without it slowing the "baking" process any.
The cameras are all installed, same as last year - window cam and nestbox cam. Sound as well is hooked up though we couldn't test it on-site. Will be nice to have at least one site with sound ... the Radisson ledge likely won't because its just too far away.
We only got home a little bit ago (very long day) so I'm afraid a screen capture from the cams of the egg (eggs) will have to wait until tomorrow. And yes, Dennis has photos too, lots and lots of them so it will take him a bit of time to go through them all, but you will see some soon.

Still jut two eggs in the nestbox and they haven't started incubating. Brooklyn and Hurricane have both been "on" the eggs but most of the time they are uncovered and they were uncovered all of last night. How can I be sure? One of the eggs has a large white patch on it and the camera can pick up the glow just enough to tell even in the dark of the night. Not sure about that egg actually, it seems to be "sticky" there are small pebbles and feathers on it whereas the other egg looks fine. Might be that egg 2 was damaged but will have to wait and see. Otherwise all looks good in the nestbox and with the pair - it is still easy to tell them apart if you can't tell by size - Brooklyn still "glows" and has clear edges on his facial markings whereas Hurricane is white but not so neon and her cap is much bigger/darker and what cheek markings she has (particularly on her left side has blurred margins.

I would be surprised if she had another three, she typically lays four and we've never had a five lay in this province. But heck you never know this year.

As of 1545h today, just one egg in the box, parent on the box edge for much of the day but at the moment, BJ (Brandon Jnr) is all by itself. Looks like a lovely day in Brandon, glad the birds get to enjoy it without egg duty.

Well, they are certainly still working on having more eggs. I saw them canoodle at 5:38pm today. ;D Brooklyn was perched on east ledge of the nest box and Hurricane was preening on the mts tower. I have noticed that when Brooklyn is at the nest box and leaves he quite frequently goes over to copulate with Hurricane. :-*

The connection to Brandon is slow during the day so I have to download video after about 11pm. Unfortunately, by that time of night, I don't always remember to post things like reminders I'm afraid ;) Will try though. And folks can subscribe if they want to get a note when new videos are posted.

The eggs were uncovered last night but that's not a worry, particularly with the warm weather we are having right now (mid to high 20Cs).
Today Brooklyn has been parked on the eggs when he's in the box but Hurricane has mostly been just standing over the eggs - not really mumbrelling, just enjoying the need not to velcro herself to her eggs yet. If there is another egg pending, she should lay it very shorty.

They are incubating now - rapid shift changes - 5 or 6 already today. Pretty even matched so far in terms of time on the eggs. And yes, still two eggs and they still look fine from what I can see.
The wind is muffing them up quite a bit, worse than the Radisson pair it looks like. According to the weather office, winds are suppose to die down tonight.

Fourth egg laid today at 0721h CDT - three eggs in the nest, one non-viable and removed
From what I have seen, all three eggs look good but Brooklyn and Hurricane have been making very fast shift changes so I don't get much time to look. When its warmer on Monday, they may change a little slower ... Brandon is expected to hit 26C

Just so folks know re videos - I have to download them at night otherwise it takes 4-5x as long to download. I also tend to find clips and download in groups so I should have more up this weekend. When it gets busier (ie there are chicks) if there are interesting clips I will post them more frequently.

Hurricane is on the eggs right now - still just three. I'm going to keep an eye on them because I can't tell whether it was just a piece of debris in front of one of the eggs or if we have another egg with a problem. Shift changes for these birds are pretty frequent so I am hoping to maybe get a couple more looks this morning.

The sun is out in Brandon and the box is half sun/half shade. It is very windy out there but the birds/nestbox look to be very sheltered, no shaking on the cam and only occasionally are the birds' feathers ruffled. Very different story from the Radisson!
And that egg that looked "odd", looks like it was just debris in the box and against/in front of the egg that gave it that look. Going to keep an eye on the eggs for the next day or two just to be sure, but so far it looks like all is well.

Well all these strong winds have blown Brooklyn and Hurricane's cached food to the street. I saw an intact red-winged blackbird and a least sandpiper on the road by the McKenzie building today.

I see Brooklyn and Hurricane are becoming well known in Brandon, they are being discussed on ebrandon.ca (that's a local Brandon forum). People that work in downtown Brandon seem quite interested in them. It's only taken over 20 years to get to this point. :)

Rain and drizzle off and on all afternoon but dry in the nest box. Hurricane has made sure that the scrape is in the very southwest corner of the box, that's the most sheltered part of the box. Brooklyn on the eggs at 1730 hours and Hurricane on one of the lights. :)

Gee I stand corrected!! Guess I can't see very well but I live a mile away so perhaps the weather is different at The Mckenzie Towers. If that is the forecast for Brandon then maybe she will be washed right out of the nest box(I hope not), so far there has been only 2mls of rain and very little wind :).

Not sure when the rain started and the forecast precipitation amounts are the possible "up to" amounts. At the moment Hurricane looks find, maybe a bit damp around her face but she's been soaking wet before and all has been well. Considering her eggs are still a couple of weeks from hatching, the next couple of days of wet will be more irritating for the parents than for the kids-to-be I suspect.

Shift change in the last little while, Brooklyn is on the eggs right now and has positioned himself so that he is facing into the wind. Even though he doesn't have floppy ears, I must admit watching him in the wind makes me think of a cocker spaniel with its head out the car window ... looking at the extended forecast, looks like winds over the next week are going to be a bit lighter, 10-20 km/h (its been into the 40 km/h range in the last hour) but mostly from the east so lighter but some breeze for the next few days ...

Looks quite windy in Brandon this evening. Hurricane's feathers are flapping away. Not sure, actually, if it's Hurricane or Brooklyn on the eggs right now. Which ever bird it is, is facing inward in the nestbox so I can only see her/his tail feathers.

If an egg looks "odd" I think it is just the way it may be sitting in the scrape or the way the light/shadow is lighting it up. I think by definition, eggs are egg-shaped, and no I'm not being facetious, I mean that is the way they form/have to form during the process of getting from point A to point B before being laid.
What makes you think the egg looks "odd"? I've been through recent recordings of shift changes and they look fine to me ... :-\

Hurricanes three eggs look normal to me, they don't look odd shaped. ??? From looking at Tracy's video's, even the egg she discarded didn't look odd shaped even though it did look collapsed.
If an egg looks "odd" I think it is just the way it may be sitting in the scrape or the way the light/shadow is lighting it up. I think by definition, eggs are egg-shaped, and no I'm not being facetious, I mean that is the way they form/have to form during the process of getting from point A to point B before being laid.
What makes you think the egg looks "odd"? I've been through recent recordings of shift changes and they look fine to me ... :-\

I checked out the video of the egg being laid and it doesn't look like it was damaged at hatching and it wasn't until hours later that I noticed that there was debris sticking to the egg - it was a few hours after that the "dent" appeared and then the egg was crushed very quickly after that. From lay to discard was about 30 hours and most of that time, the eggs were on their own, incubation didn't begin until after the egg was discarded so it didn't take much for Hurricane/Brooklyn to crush the egg when they were in the box with it. And they didn't do it on purpose, they were being their usual careful selves around their eggs.
So what does this mean? It may just be that she's a three egg bird or that her system needs more time between egg 1 and 2? She's healthy and her surviving eggs look great and her previous years' offspring are all fine, so it may just be her unique nesting quirk. It's also not something we can do anything about so we will be happy with three eggs and hopefully three chicks each year. ;) ;D

You are right, it was just for a few - mostly just Dan and the Green Team student that was working with him that summer. I only ever got to see the images when I visited Brandon and mostly they didn't record anything (it was a VHS recorder) and from what I remember, the CCTV camera was not nearly as good as even the lowest resolution cameras now used for webcams! It was certainly better than trying to peer out of the little window where our camera is now, that was impossible for trying to figure out who was where and what they were doing. It was the best that would work at that location with the technology available at that time but its wonderful how much technology has improved since then.
Having said that, I'm having trouble confirming how many eggs we have in West Winnipeg because of the camera angle this year, so great technology or not, sometimes all you can hope is for the surprise to be a good one. And I remember Dan's email - we needed to make sure we had enough bands for whatever were the genders for the birds so there were a couple of rapid-fire emails to make sure we had enough of all sizes. :D

Winds shouldn't be of much concern for Hurricane and Brooklyn today, maybe some swirling around the building but given the position of the nestbox, probably not much force behind it. Box is on the east side of the building, so air movement from the west they are pretty protected from.
For those looking at the day count, we are on day 20 of incubation. Hurricane's and Brooklyn's eggs usually hatch out at or past the 30 day mark, so if they are still on that schedule another 10 days until the start of the Brandon hatch watch...

On the camera inside the nestbox the gravel looks damp but can't tell on the window cam image ... if there is rain, given the direction of the wind (from the north east) then it/some should be blowing into the nestbox ... so far I'm glad we have another couple of weeks before these kids hatch ... hopefully the rain won't return for their debut ...

1542 hours: That's Brooklyn on the eggs now and he must have been somewhere dry he doesn't look at all wet. The wind just tipped him over and put him up on his nose and now he is playing with the stones. :)

That looks like that was the western end of the storm that was hitting Winnipeg a bit earlier - the system is circulating/rotating east to west ... looking at the radar, once you are past that, the rest of the rain we will receive is sort of the tail end of the spiral if that makes sense. Nice to see Brooklyn and Hurricane dry during a major storm ... not like 2011 when even a nestbox couldn't help out two still a bit inexperienced parents. (for folks who are new to the McKenzie Seeds pair, that was their first really bad weather as parents)

They both like to perch under the black/green ledge on the south side of the bulding where it's out of the wind, it's one of the places they cache their prey. :)

We've been very lucky today! No rain since early am. The reason Hurricane looked so wet, the wind was blowing the water dripping off the roof directly onto her right side. When she got up at change of shift you could see her left side was completely dry and Brooklyn was dry when he came in. They sure don't take long to change shifts, just one off and the other on ( they had lots of practice in 2011).

Brooklyn looks to have taken over in the night sometimes, he was just visible by his shape/size & neon cheek patches when the light started helping with contrast on-camera between 0345 and 0400h. Hurricane took over at 0802h. Bright sun in the nestbox all morning and 3 very good looking eggs.

All quiet in the nestbox this morning ... I can see blue sky with a few clouds with the camera inside the nestbox and the sun is shining in the nestbox and Brooklyn looks to be napping and enjoying the sun. Hardly any wind visible in the box and even when it comes up a bit (not much) this evening, the shift further south should I think mean the south wall of the nestbox could provide some protection and give them a quiet night.

Morning events ....
Shift change, Hurricane "off", Brooklyn "on" at 0449h. Interestingly, like the Radisson adult on duty (Princess in this case), Brooklyn has been off the eggs twice this morning (0848-0852 & 0951-1003) with no apparent reason why. Now both nestsites are in the morning sun and it is strong this morning so no harm would have come from the absences, just interesting that they should be displaying similar behaviours on the same morning. At time of posting, Brooklyn is still on the eggs.

Brooklyn has been off the eggs twice this morning (0848-0852 & 0951-1003) with no apparent reason why.
1424h:Hurricane on the eggs now, also there have been workmen on the MTS tower all day, that might be part of the reason Brooklyn was on and off the eggs earlier. Both Hurricane and Brooklyn usually check things like that out and when there are chicks in the nest they can be quite vocal and you can hear them alarm calling on the mike.

Early shift change again this morning - Hurricane got off about 0452h then back on then Brooklyn relieved her at 0455h and is still there. Eggs looked good from what I can see in the low light at that time.
So we are at day 31 and these eggs could be like Princess' and Ivy's and be a bit later than usual or be like Beau's and Jules' and be pretty much on target. Would be nice to have some chicks hatching over the weekend so long as there is no danger of heavy rain!

Those three eggs are very dark so they could very well be pips RCF! Want to say I look forward to seeing them hatch tomorrow (Sat) but the forecast is for 70% chance of rain and winds from the ESE - not as bad as E or ENE but it would be better if the chicks could just wait until Sunday. Much as I like Hurricane and Brooklyn and as good as they are as parents (and they are good parents!), I sometimes get a little concerned with their habit of trading off shifts even right after the chicks hatch when it rains. Maybe Hurricane will take a leaf out of her mother's book and stick like glue to her babes if they do hatch tomorrow and if it rains so they stay dry at such a young age.

1045h - Brooklyn still "on" - he's been napping quite soundly this morning and just in the last hour doing a little hoovering around the box, occasionally getting up and off the eggs entirely ... according to my weather tracker it is 17C right now in Brandon so no problem getting off the eggs at this stage in the game ...

Hurricane is flipping her head which couldn't have been an drip of rain on her head in the old box but since its not raining (thanks RCF!) and the roof is new, I think she has an irritating insect bugging her and because she can't leave, she has to live with the annoyance ... can't see the bug, so might be a mosquito? or flatfly or something equally small ...

Yes, the little no seeums (bugs) seem to annoy them when there is no wind. ::)

I'm going to try to catch the chick at 1220h - couldn't get bottom out of bottom half of egg and Hurricane just tucked entirely back under - think she rolled her eyes at her first-hatched ::) ;D

Something that struck me as interesting ... see how fast the eggshell has been crumpled some ... the eggshells at West Winnipeg are perfectly intact even now, 4-6 days after hatching, but less than an 1/2 hour after hatching this eggshell looks crumpled, could just be that it was stomped on a few times under Hurricane but given how easily her second egg was damaged/destroyed, I'll be interested to see how the rest of the eggshells here fare ...

I watched Hurricane chewing on the shell and it would spin around each time she bit it, so maybe that's why it looks crumpled.

Two hours after hatch and the chick is still wet ... when dry it will take another hour before chick is fully fuzzy = the feathers don't just have to be dry but fluffed up as well (think towel dried on a clothesline and towel out of a dryer, both are dry but one is a bit more fluffed up).
And Brandon's first chick had its first "davenport" moment at 1443h ... :)

Interesting to note the difference between the Radisson pair and the McKenzie Seeds pair. Hurricane lets Brooklyn come and babysit, and yet Princess is more possessive and doesn't let Ivy do as much.

I'm sure your are right TPC. I watched that entire feed and the pip wasn't there at the beginning but it showed up part way through and I watched it get bigger as the feeding finished. My old eyes thought they were seeing things. :)

I watched my long version of the feed and yes I think the egg did start to pip as the two chicks were being fed. That's pretty Cool!! 8)

Happy to see the third chick has made his/her entrance. It is now that time of year I become a vegetarian. My computer is now focused on both cams. Rose/RCF, your work has now shifted into overdrive. Wish I could view the falcons on TV. All day, all night watching our falcons. CBC, much better than infomercials.

For some Forum Administrators, 10 pages is a long thread. I don't have a problem with the length of the thread (number of pages) it is the size of the posts. For example, there are 15 posts per page and they all take up a certain amount of space before we type in a single word. Add the comment and the post gets physically longer. Add a photo or photos and the post gets longer again. When people quote the photos you are doubling, trebling the amount of physical space being used for each post. The post count per page stays at 15 regardless of the physical space the post takes up. Add to that that I have set the photo size to be fairly large, many forums just allow for thumbnails (150x150) with a link to the gallery where the photo is stored. I haven't done that though I have requested that folks don't post all their photos here, just the important ones.
If you are on a computer with a mouse, relatively easy to scroll through a long thread but if you are on a mobile device you have to scroll up/down on a much smaller screen and whereas photos can be side-by-side on your larger computer screen, they are lined up vertically on the small screens. If you are a guest the newest posts are always at the end, so you have to go to the end and back track to find where you were when you last visited which when there are new chicks or fledging, can mean 10 or 20 pages. And even on a computer, scrolling through the same photo(s) over and over again can be frustrating when you are trying to catch up on the details.
- posts/June = 3497 (June 2008), 9872 (June 2009 - a very big year), 3880 (June 2010), 2578 (June 2011), 2242 (June 2012) & 524 new posts to-date this year
- pageviews/June = 160K (June 2008), 364K (June 2009), 190K (June 2010), 167K (June 2011), 158K (June 2012) & 104K (to date June 2013)
June and July tend to be about the same overall, with May be a little less. If that trend stays true for this year, then our June total pageviews should be close to the 2009 numbers ...
I don't want to discourage folks from posting photos, definitely not! Just the repeating the same photo over and over again in quotes when it isn't necessary. If it is necessary, then quote the photo and whatever else is necessary.
And just as a reminder, every time a photo is displayed the system has to go out and retrieve that photo to display it which eats up the band width the Project has paid for to host the Forum, website et al. So, I post a photo, then 5 other people quote the photo, the system goes out to get that same photo 6 times, 6 times the traffic, 6 times the band width used. And as time goes on, our links to photos increases so we use more and more band width each year. If I get anywhere close to my band width limit, I will have to stop having photos of any type on the Forum which would be a bad thing I feel.
More than you were asking specifically Rose, but hopefully it helps folks understand the mechanics behind the request.

When she came back about 4 or 5 minutes later she never brought the food back. I thought the way she acted was a little strange. she doesn't seem concerned about anything now. ???

Guess the kids either missed lunch or had it late . We were down at the McKenzie Building at 1230 and Brooklyn was bringing lunch. He took it to the louvers of the Scotia towers to prepare it and dropped it over the side, he went to retrieve it but some people came out of the building just as he was coming down so he just flew off. Hurricane came off the nest box, flew around and complained from the top mast of the MTS tower. When last seen Brooklyn was off to catch more lunch. ;D

Wanted to tweak the cam angle on the window cam and often folks get dizzy when I zoom in and out, so it seemed kinder to switch the view while I "tweaked". And besides, its nice to see the world more like the peregrines do from time to time. :)

Hurricane just fed these three and now Brooklyn comes in to feed them. He keeps looking out to see if Hurricane is coming because he knows she will make him leave. He takes the food with him when she comes back. ;D He just wants to be with his kids, Poor Guy!!

I find it interesting that Brooklyn and Hurricane are so different compared to, say, other falcon parents. I've noticed in the past, as well as present, they leave their chicks sooner and for longer periods of time. Not a concern, just a comment...

I think it is funny that Hurricane and Radisson(in Edmonton), have very strong names. I do see a lot of the names in the family trees, and that some have come back to the general area. Ty, Cowboy and more, that link them back to this very watched nests.

pre-dawn - chicks on their own - makes sense, they are 9/10 days old and are pretty much able to thermoregulate & keep themselves warm, not that that is the real issue at the moment ;)

0729h - first wanderer thinks about wandering then returns to chickpile
0755h - wandering free-for-all and Hurricane looks absolutely harried - chickpile reforms about 0825h

1020h - rebel makes its way to front of nestbox to find "own" shade, Hurricane keeps other two in the shade until the roof takes over then leaves the chicks to their own devices with I daresay a sigh of relief ... she certainly looked eager to leave :D

Looking at the McKenzie Seeds chicks, is won't surprise me if we have 2 females and a male when it comes to banding a couple of weeks. But it could just be the age difference between them as they are only half-way to banding age, so it will be interesting to see.

Rose and I went to the Brandon General Museum today knowing they had a display featuring Brooklyn and Hurricane and they also had a very large monitor that is streaming the CBC nest cam in Brandon. They have two stuffed peregrines from 1926 from the Oak Lake area. (from the B.J. Hale collection). One looked like an adult and the other a juvenile. After speaking with the young lady who was there about the display, she told us that someone had been speaking to a person from the recovery project and said they were going to visit the museum. I would only assume that it was TPC she was talking about.

Even though the display says it's a juvenile peregrine, it looks more like a merlin to me. I had a good look when I there and the legs are much smaller than the adults peregrine legs. I thought by the time they are banded/fledged, the legs are the same size as an adult. These taxidermy specimens are over 80 years old.

To my eye, their immature peregrine is a Prairie Falcon .... same basic size as a peregrine, we generally only see them in passing here, more common (relatively speaking) out west.

For those who are wondering, the museum is right across 9th Street from McKenzie Seeds - it's in the Manitoba Government Telephone Building - the MTS tower that RCF has photos of the birds sitting on, is on the roof.

Peregrines have big feet - the breast is streaked rather than spotted, so my thought is juvenile Prairie Falcon or sub-adult at least ..

Ok so at approx 7:18 (or so) pm some sort of snack was brought into the nest - it was NOT a bird! Long skinny tail and 4 legs! :o - a rat? - They don't eat rodents do they? Yikes it was strange! ???

I guess they'll eat anything if it was up high enough to catch. :o Maybe they found it hiding under the Poplar tree growing out of the southside blocked roof gutter, that's about 11 stories above street level, maybe it climbed up the drainpipe. Only TPC can tell you, she has the tape she can refer to. ;D

Holy cats, have they been eating everything else in town?!! :o
Peregrines are bird specialists - they are aerial hunters and flying at high speeds is dangerous if you are hunting at ground level. Some local populations will exploit other prey species if they are locally abundant, like bats if a pair was nesting right near a roost site or some northern peregrine populations will hunt small mammals at certain times of the year because locally they are as abundant or more so than bird prey species. Urban peregrines eat pigeons because they are locally abundant - but not all, we had a pair that appeared not to eat pigeon often but seemed to dine daily on gulls - the gulls were more plentiful at the site than pigeons. If I recall on an old prey survey at the Radisson, the remains of a bat was found once and the assumption was it was a peregrine kill, but of course, nothing like having it "on-camera"!!! The anatum peregrine subspecies is technically an avian predator - but as Hurricane just proved, sometimes there is an opportunity for something a little different - I'm just hoping it was running along a roof somewhere when it was caught as opposed to dead on a roof somewhere ... also that there are still a few pigeons or waterbirds around for this pair - much healthier and safer for all concerned.

0815 hours: The storm has passed and the sun has peeked through, only 70mls of rain (2 3/4 inches) since 0330h. This was a normal Prairie Storm, lots of thunder, lightning and rain but no wind or hail. Chicks got fed and mom didn't feel it was necessary to stay with them all of the time. Now we wait for the official forum forecast but the weather eye says more of the same weather waiting in the wings. :)

0700h: Breakfast, everyone looks a little wet but still willing to be stuffed. :) The rain started about 0200h with occasional thunder and lightning. Rain amount 30ml from 0200 until now. It's still raining a bit and the sky has some breaks in the cloud cover. The radar shows most of the system has passed for now.

0900h - meal - could have been one dawn/pre-dawn but the water either from the roof or pouring down obscured the camera's view
Hurricane has been with the chicks about half the time, chicks on their own the other half of the time. They are/have been a bit damp but at this age and in this nestbox they should be fine - suspect Hurricane isn't there so much to keep them dry but rather to keep them a bit warmer - the wind shouldn't be a big problem in the nestbox according to the forecast (NW winds - box is open to the north and the east) but the high for today is only 16C - so wet and a bit cooler than it was yesterday (high yesterday at the Brandon airport was 25C) - not cool enough to cause a problem but Hurricane and Brooklyn can give the chicks a bit more warmth and they may decide to do so.

a slow moving low pressure system over southwest Manitoba will track into the interlake today into tonight bringing an area of moderate to heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms across the warning area. As of this morning general rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm have been recorded across southwest Manitoba with locally higher amounts under bands of thunderstorms. For today the axis of heaviest rain is expected to shift northward into the Dauphin and Lake Winnipegosis areas with amounts of 50 mm or more possible over the next 12 to 24 hours. Further south.. additional rainfall amounts of 10 to 25 mm are possible on top of the amounts received so far today. Boy don't need a weather forecast to tell me it's raining in downtown Brandon! Now in the last few minutes the sound has actually come on and you can hear the rain, mike has buzzed all day I don't bother reporting it because the sound has been like this(buzzing and real sound) off and on since the cams went up. :)

Coincidence I think RCF because the softwares (sound & cam) and hardware (cam, sound, CBC & Project) are all separate. And when I switch from one view to another, it's the software, there are no moving parts ... :-\ ... puzzling ...

- looks like one of the adults was in or on the box most of the night ...
- 0659h - like the Radisson birds, later than usual breakfast due to the rain
- 0911h - sun came out, chicks awake doing some preening and wandering
- 0937h - Brooklyn dropped by for a visit - couple of minutes and no food, kids didn't look impressed
- 0954h - Brooklyn turned up with food, Hurricane co-opted right to feed the chicks (bossy moms this year!)
- 1025h - Brooklyn returns with food & feeds chicks (sneaky dads this year too)

Rose, I know I like that Tracy has been posting the weather as I never check the Brandon weather (TV, radio, internet) and rarely even check for Winnipeg weather. So it works for me so I can know what the chicks and parents are in for.

What a perfectly logical explanation! ;) I never saw or read the old Blog but I have been a member of this forum since it's beginning and I never knew the reason for the forecasts. I just supposed that like me and wanted a forecast for a different part of the country or world you just Googled what you wanted. That's really good of you to think of the large percentage of forum members and guests that don't live here and can't look out the window and see what's going on. Thanks again for the explanation, so now I know. :)

Chronology up to now today ....
- 0430h - all 3 chicks awake and up and looking around
- 0435h - nap time!
- 0514h - breakfast & naptime
- 0755h - sun shining full into the nestbox and the chicks have moved to the front edge of the box to sprawl & nap
- 0818h - second breakfast, followed by a food coma
- 1206h - lunch, followed by yet another food coma
- 1307h - Brooklyn arrives to nibble on leftovers and he shares with kids
- 1330h - chicks collapse to nap and continue with very very squirming until to the present time

The feather grows within a sheath which is what makes it look a bit like a Q-tip - as it grows, it grows out the end. The sheath that you see breaks down and the chicks clean it off as they preen. At this age when we band them we get some of this stuff on our clothes and hand - its dry, flaky.

So, just my opinion, we owe a great big debt to RCF and Rose for their dedication and sharing regarding the Brandon birds.
Yes there is a cam on the downtown site but a great percentage of what we know about these birds are due to the updates from RCF and Rose.
These two ladies have spent so very much of their time ( more than the Winnipeg watchers )
observing and documenting the Brandon birds. And they do it at their own expense and time.

We caught Hurricane feeding the kids this evening, we could see them all from the bus mall (about a block away). There were people on the balcony across the street so Brooklyn & Hurricane weren't happy.

That is the plan and I say "plan" because there is a small possibility that Eye-Spy will not be able to join us. For those of you who are new, Eye-Spy is responsible for all the cams on the nests and for filming the bandings. If he can't attend, he plans to provide us with instructions that hopefully won't be beyond our collective technical skills. As a last resort, we may have to tape it then convert it and make it available through the CBC website after the fact. Given all those options, excellent and well-thought-out as they may be, we are still hoping Eye-Spy will be there so there won't be any problems.

Brooklyn has been hanging out in the nest box with the chicks this morning. He tried to feed them earlier but Hurrricane showed up and he left, but he's back now.

- 0528h - second breakfast - explains why they didn't settle after FB
- 0551h - after more wingercizing, everyone sprawled in their own corner
- 0900h - everyone sprawled along the east (front) edge of the box - hard to tell where one ends and the next begins
- 0908h - happy sprawl over, third breakfast arrives courtesy of Brooklyn - Hurricane arrives and both the adults leave together and the chicks pick over the leftovers
- 0942h - Brooklyn returns, hangs out in the box with the kids, sometimes in the shade, sometimes being the shade - same thing is going on at the Radisson - guess the parents do have access to the weather report!

- more preening, more napping and general annoying one another
- 0839h - Brooklyn arrives, sans food but doesn't stay long
- 0845h - second breakfast - everyone hungry again and you almost can't see Brooklyn behind the little behemoths
- 0910h - chicks settle down to nap again
- 0925h - Brooklyn returns to check things out, kids mostly don't bother moving any
- 0955h - all the chicks have moved to the back of the box and into the shade from the roof - Brooklyn joins them, or rather he gets his head in the shade at least

Nice looking "bling"! Looks as if everything went well. :D Chicks are being fed now. 2 males are feeding on the nestbox ledge right now. Hadn't seen that before. Female chick attempted to climb up on the nestbox ledge, but did not appear able to.

Very funny to watch this feeding. 1 male on the nestbox ledge got lots to eat, next the female in the nestbox was fed. The male in the middle who really didn't get much to eat at all appeared to have his wings on this hips and was squawking as if to say "Awww! Come on ma! How about some for me?!" LOL! :D

Looks like the male with the green tape has been out of the box and on the roof. I didn't see him leave but saw him return and I think he used the ramp.

Sorry folks, had a we bump so I'm not moving quite so fast today. Have tweaked the cam to show more of the box & ramp. I try to keep the cam aimed where we can see the most chicks or where we can see the chicks most or most frequently.
And yes, priority is to get the banding recording converted and posted as fast as possible.

The female left shortly after her brother and has been wandering out of view. The other one seems content to stay in the box, I am sure as soon as mom or dad bring food that will change.

I don't know if any one was watching but the little male is sure full of energy. After being fed, he was in the box dancing around in circles, bouncing off the walls, flapping his wings, and bugging his sister by biting her tail. Lots of fun to watch! ;D

Last year when the chicks left the box, they never went back. These three have all been out of the box wandering around and now two of them have returned to box for the night. There is one outside the box, lying down by the ramp. Oh wait, it moved. Now it wants in the box.....tried to jump in but that didn't work. Still trying.

Well I definitely got a few chuckles out of that. It was like the other 2 kept telling this one USE THE RAMP, it walked underneath it two or three times, tried to jump on it more than once, and then finally figured it out. Precious video, thank you. :) :) :)

There is always one that seems to have a problem with ramps ... not just at McKenzie Seeds but at West Winnipeg as well ::)
Nice to see them coming back to the nestbox, means its easier to keep track of the little darlings with the webcam.

The ramp isn't actually needed, the chicks were able to jump up from the inside so technically they can jump up/down on the outside as well. We put the ramp on to encourage the chicks to go in/out after they left the first time, if only to provide them with the option to have cover during hot/wet times. The ramp isn't the full length because the birds don't like to have their tail feathers touching when they sit perched somewhere so we try to make sure they have "edges" that are high enough to keep the chicks safe and the adults/older chicks with tail feathers comfortable.

You are right RCF there is a bit of a difference but not more than 2 inches which granted is a fair distance for the peregrines at this age and stage. The 2x4's are actually about an inch or less - they are part of the old nestbox. We realized that the roof was just uneven enough that even though we were on a high spot, we needed to shim it a bit in order to keep it somewhat level. Neat thing about the chicks is that once they figure out how to do something, they pretty much have it nailed. The small male and female were up on the riser 2 hours and 20 minutes after they were put in the nestbox. Now a couple of days after the fact, I daresay one if not all of the chicks could jump up on the riser from the outside if they wanted to. It is common for chicks to leave the nestbox if they can to follow their parents - the Radisson chicks would do if if they could get over the wall (it is higher even than the riser on purpose) and the West Winnipeg chicks have done it everywhere they have nested. Knowing we were going to put these guys on the roof, we decided to make it easier for them based on what we had seen of chick behaviour elsewhere. Without the ramp, they wouldn't go back and that's fine, we'd just like them to have the option. And these little guys were very quick to figure the ramp out - faster even I think than Rain/Rosser or Sol/Hunter/Maya. Like to think that will be a good sign come fledging - smart chicks hopefully will be able to avoid getting in to serious trouble.

The chicks have been wandering about since 0440h - they all appear to have slept out of the box but right outside the box ... at least two of the chicks have been in and out of the nestbox already, perhaps all three ... at the moment, two are outside the box (one visible, one not) and one is inside the box ...

Little male decided he didn't need the ramp and jumped for the top of the riser. Fell back the first time but that didn't deter him from trying again and with a bit more wing action and a little grab and pull with his feet he was up. Looked very pleased with himself. Now he's inside with I think big male but can't be sure.

All three chicks are in the nestbox away from the worst of the sun. Not many prey remains in there so even though hot today, not stinky & hot.
Light is very bright so I've opted to zoom in for a bit instead of just watching glare from the roof. Have to be away from computer for a wee bit but will be back and will change view if necessary ... should be shadier then and the chicks should be outside.
Winds are from the south and shaking the cam some ... first time both our cams have been affected by wind at the same time!

Chicks have decided to go "camping" - they are napping in the plants along the south wall of the roof, Lake McKenzie is just to the left of the image off camera. The roof looks like it might be a bit damp still (which is why the plants are so healthy) and therefore cooler - looking at the nearest weather station in the Brandon area, it is 28C but feels like 31C so a cool damp spot to lie on must be a pleasure!

Parents are still complaining, the camera has been put back on the nest box but haven't seen the chicks yet. Sound has been real good sounded like there was a real party going on. The parents complaining, people talking and everyone having a fine time.

Yes, today is the day that the McKenzie Seeds chicks were retrieved from the roof and individually fitted with a satellite transmitter as part of a research project looking to identify travel patterns but also habitat choices for young peregrines on migration. Given all the changes on the landscape in the last decade - modifications to intensive agriculture methods, draining wetlands, increased urbanization, wind turbines, power lines, oil and gas exploration, fracking, etc, knowing what young peregrines look for in their first couple of years could be a way to decrease their high (70%) mortality rate in the first year.

RCF has asked if it is necessary that I switch to the nestbox cam when trying to locate the chicks on the McKenzie Seeds rooftop. We do so because between the lag time between here and Brandon the cam moves in such a way that many viewers find it difficult to watch. I also understand that some viewers would like to watch these moves so I will try to split the difference. Because we can't warn folks when we are moving, long moves will get switched, shorter or slower sweeps I will try to keep viewable. Warning, there is usually alot of zoom in/zoom out so that we can make fine adjustments to counter the angle of the sun or reflection off the roof.

I can understand why you would move the picture when using the cam to look around. Sometimes when it is very windy and the Radisson cam is shaking, I get dizzy and can only watch for short periods. That said, if you are moving the cam slowly, shouldn't be a problem watching and would be interesting to see.

The kids are all back together in the SE corner, could be they know to batten down the hatches - smarter to do so in the nestbox but the garden corner will do in a pinch as well.

The chicks are back in the garden corner (SE corner of the roof) in the shade. Sun is full out so we are zoomed right in we can get some detail - the silver paint on the roof, old as it is, reflects the light very well, I'm sure it helps keep the building cooler but it is tough on the cam image at times.

It can be used on younger chicks but with the downy feathers the feathers come out end up in their eyes which can be irritating. By the time they are this age, most of the downy feathers are gone (usually just some on the top of the head) and the hood sits on smooth flight feathers.

Just a little note about RCF's photos. The original building is seven stories( that's what you see in the photos) as you can see it's a little bit of a drop from where Sir Green Boy is sitting. That copper Cornice extends across the east side( front of the building) and around both east and west side for as far as you can see from the photo. Below the wall is a two storey building, the drop there is five stories. Further to the west closer to the nest box wall the drop will be seven stories. So if he should decide to explore the best place to start would be right from where he is sitting. :)

I can only assume someone who lives in the building (mts tower building) put this up to scare something away. It doesn't seem to bother the peregrines. Maybe they were annoyed at the sounds of screaming peregrine parents the other day. This is new and has only gone up in the last two days. When we first looked we thought it was BatMan, ;D I think it's supposed to be an owl.

I think the the little male spent the whole night on the wall, but can't be too sure. He was on the wall after midnight. I guess he likes to see what's on the other side of the bricks. It just occurred to me they had a big wide view when they were in the wall nest box.

The kids are back on the wall in the corner where they spent last night. The chicks will be 37 days old tomorrow so it's nice to see them moving so easily up and down from the roof to the walls and back again. Great pre-fledging workouts.

Only caught a glimpse of one of the chicks this morning preening on the north wall. Usually by this point most if not all are tucked down in the shade to ride out the morning sun and I assume that is where they are now, just can't see them with the camera - probably in the shade between two of the skylights if I had to make a guess.

Haven't been on the forum for a while but wanted to say how gorgeous the three musketeers in Brandon are! I also love the brownish coloring of these little sweethearts. I notice that at least one of them has a transmitter.....or do all three have them. What about West Wpg? Transmitters? Considering all the storms and heavy rains all the young'uns have fared very well. Have a good fledge!

Chicks are 38 days old today. Radisson male (Tenzing) didn't fledge until he was 40 days old so hopefully the two males here will wait until then and continue to practice their short flights across the rooftop. Radisson female (Hillary) didn't fledge until she was 44 days old. Neither has had any problems which is exactly what we wish for all of this year's chicks!!

I watched the little male fly off the north wall today. He circled to the east, over the annex building then over 9th Street between the mts tower and McKenzie bldg. He landed on the ledge at the bottom of the clock tower......a full circle gaining height. I have no idea if this was his first flight, but first time I have seen him fly. He sat up there and preened. ;D

Thanks Susha, I have notified CBC and hopefully they will correct it very soon. Because we gave folks both male and female names and told them what the gender of the chicks were, I have no qualms choosing the top two male names for the male chicks and the top female name for the female chick - it is what we do every year. I think perhaps because the folks at CBC are knee-deep in Fringe and other projects, it was an slip of the keyboard ...

I checked on the birdies this evening and the little male (Bogart) is flying very well. He flew up to the west light where Brooklyn was....twice, maybe he was trying to knock him off of it. ;D He did quite a bit of flying back and forth over to the Scotia building and back, then finally landed on the McKenzie roof. I left around 9pm and he was perched at the bottom of the clock tower. I guess he likes this spot.

Severe thunderstorms expected this afternoon into this evening.
A low pressure system moving through Southern Saskatchewan is expected to push into Southwestern Manitoba and trigger severe thunderstorms this afternoon. Large hail, damaging winds, torrential downpours and frequent lightning are possible with any storms that develop. In addition...Depending on the evolution of this system, there is the potential for tornadoes to develop later in the day. The meteorological service of Canada is monitoring the situation and will upgrade the severe thunderstorm watch to a tornado watch if warranted.
Severe storms should move out of the province by late this evening.

Looks like the wind is picking up in Brandon, usually the camera is pretty protected but it has a shake right now. The sun isn't shining and it is only 20C in Brandon right now, so I'm interested in the two chicks' decision to hang out in northeast corner - they don't need to be in the shade to stay cool and they aren't entirely out of the wind so while they are still young and need more rest than their parents, their choice of location is interesting. Besides being very photogenic, they are very watchable chicks ...
Just as a heads up, the cams will be going offline next weekend as CBC needs the streaming resources for upcoming projects. Given that these chicks are 41 days old today, we should them all up and flying before that happens.

Looks like Bogart and Spencer are up on the wall (one facing in, one facing out) and Kelly is in the corner. All three are just sitting there, almost like they are waiting for something to happen or to pass. Think there might have been some lightning as the camera did a bit of a reset (the configuration data shows in the top left corner) and that usually only happens when there is a power fluctuation. Guess that could mean the storm(s) is/are on their way ... :-\

I was watching the cam and one of the chicks flew south from the northeast pillar, a few minutes later there was one on the southeast pillar and then flew off and went north. I got in my car and went to Brandon. I found the fledger on the west side roof of the McKenzie building. It was Kelly and I would estimate 5pm for her fledge time.

Nope, I was wrong, it was Bogart. When he got up again, I had a clear look at two dark bands - one black, one green.

Spencer has fledged, but he is not in an ideal place. He is perched on top of a hydro pole on the north side of the annex building (Pacific Ave). The hydro pole is probably 20 feet high. I hung around for a couple of hours but he didn't seem to be going anywhere fast, so I came home and will go back later.

When I went back this evening Spencer was not on the hydro pole, so I did some searching around the area and found two kids on the annex building. After a while the third kid showed up, so that made me happy. The two on the annex bldg are Kelly and Spencer, Bogart was flying around and landed on the McKenzie roof.

I saw Bogart and Kelly today and they were having a bit of a tug-a-war with prey on the northwest corner of the McKenzie roof, Brooklyn must have brought it for them since he was on the east light. I didn't see Spencer or Hurricane, but I am sure they are there somewhere.

Dennis was putting the tape on and I think the red tape was a bit short and didn't go all the way round ... so you could be right RCF or it could be that you are seeing the short end ..

It rained most of the day on Monday and the three chicks were fairly wet when I saw them. When the sun came out for a while I watched a food transfer from parent to kid. 8)

Yesterday all three kids were perched at the bottom of the clock tower between takeoffs and landings. Hurricane was on the east light and Brooklyn was of course in his fav spot sitting on the edge of the nest box. Kelly was the only one of the three kids that just sat and preened on the roof edge.

Hubby and I were in downtown Brandon checking out some old cars yesterday and I was ecstatic to have a bonus.....checking out the Brandon family! One was sitting on a chimney(?) on a lower building on the north side of Rosser. I thought likely an adult from colouring and size. There was one on each of the east and west lights. I didn't notice one on the nest box but just read that's Brooklyn's fav spot so I probably missed him. When in The Cinnamon Tree I asked if they often see the peregrines and the answer was they often HEAR them!! All was quiet while I was there though.....darn! Thx for your photos and comments RCF.

I was down there too between 6 and 7pm. :) It must be good karma or something because I was treated to the chicks taking turns knocking each other off their perch. 8) ;D

Often I've wondered why the chicks sometimes leave small (relatively speaking) pellets on the low edge at the back of the nestbox. This morning, part of that was revealed ... not peregrines but a pair of pigeons (fat pigeons) perching on that low edge right at the back of the nestbox ... and leaving little "calling cards". Saw them climb down and sit in the sun against the south wall at the back of the nestbox for a few minutes but missed their departure from the box - no evidence of murder or mayhem, so I assume all went well. Will have to check the recorder when I have a bit more time ...

From what I have observed from being downtown, the pigeons will sit very close to the peregrines. ::) The peregrines don't seem all that interested in them unless they are flying. ;)

A very wet day for the peregrine family today. The only one not sitting out in the rain was Hurricane, she was under the black/green ledge staying dry.

I saw all five peregrines yesterday and only Brooklyn and Hurricane today. Brooklyn was sitting on the edge of the nest box this morning and Hurricane was on the west side Scotia sign napping this afternoon.

Spencer because he has a little wrinkle in the end of the transmitter aerial and a feather sticking up on his back where the transmitter is....we noticed this from day one of them wearing the transmitters, so we can usually tell who it is from the other two.

I saw both parents and two kids this morning. I think all five were there but it's hard to tell since I was following moving targets. ::) It's just not possible to be in two places at the same time. I saw one chick on the mts tower after work and one flew past the tower heading somewhere towards the east.

Brandon chicks have been wandering as well, not as far as the West Winnipeg chicks but they have been down to the Souris area and out to Rivers - for those of you without maps ;), that is south of Brandon and north and west of Brandon. They haven't been there regularly, just the occasional long hop and then back to Brandon/McKenzie Seeds area so that they can visit with RCF.

RCF pointed out that I missed posting this sighting on the Forum as well as on Twitter ... IBrooklyn was on the nestbox this morning, just sitting in the sun. Hurricane arrived and they did their usual (at this time of year) bowing to one another for about 30-40 seconds, then he left and she had a little scrape in the back of the nestbox and then she too bolted from the box. Same kind of thing has been happening at the Radisson and I daresay in West Winnipeg as well now that all the kids are doing exploring. Reminds me of empty-nester parents redecorating their kid's room after he/she heads off to college or a new job or a new apartment.

Two chicks were chasing a parent, couldn't tell which parent as it was too dark and it was cloudy. The parent perched and the two chicks lit on the mts tower for a few minutes yelling their displeasure at Mom or Dad . Then both kids were chasing a pigeon that had been on the mts building, one chick made contact but the pigeon is a fast flyer too. I had to leave to go to work so I hope they caught their breakfast. I didn't see any of them after work.

Looks like Hurricane perched on the east edge of the nestbox. According to Environment Canada there is a light rain shower in Brandon but right now and it looks like rain in the background on the camera but can't see any "wet" on the box itself.

I didn't see Hurricane but I saw Spencer and Brooklyn today. Spencer was eating on the north edge of the McKenzie roof and Brooklyn was perched on the Scotia building. I also watched seven Sandhill Cranes fly over the McKenzie building......there were five and then two stragglers. 8)

I have only been seeing Brooklyn and Hurricane for the last few days, so I don't know if the chicks are still around or off wandering somewhere. I'll check on the weekend to see if they are around. :)

There were three peregrines at the McKenzie building this morning (6:45am). :) It was light enough to see so it was Brooklyn, Hurricane and the one kid, so there is at least one chick still hanging around. I saw one chick on the louvered ledge of the Scotia building after work (2:40pm).

I saw Hurricane and Brooklyn and one of the chicks today, it was Bogart. He was on one of the louvered ledges of the Scotia building, Brooklyn was also perched up there. Hurricane was on the west side McKenzie roof, sitting in the gutter until Bogart chased her off. He did a lot of yelling, I think he was begging for food but was being ignored by his parents. ::) :-X

I happen to be in Brandon right now and was driving over the 8th St bridge late yesterday (Sept. 11) afternoon. Somebirdie was hanging out on the light on the east side of the clock tower. As I was driving and don't have my binos with me I couldn't tell you who it was. It was a real treat for me to see a Peregrine as I haven't seen many in Alberta. :D

Bccs asked about when we will be able to post the Brandon banding video - the answer is I'm not sure. CBC wasn't able to do the conversion from tape to digital for us - we had the same problem last year but I hoped we'd solved it. No such luck. Eye-Spy offered to convert if for us but when I received the dvd (its a very big file), the video was unreadable, so we are at a bit of an impasse. If I can get it converted, I will post to our YouTube channel.

Well, I saw three peregrines this morning, Hurricane was on the green post on the mts tower, Brooklyn was perched on the east ledge of the nest box and one chick was sitting on the west light of the clock tower. So, there is still one chick hanging around. After work I only saw Brooklyn and Hurricane on the louvered ledges of the Scotia building, no kids.

Update on the chicks' travels .... they have been checking out all the places a peregrine would find tasty eats at this time of the year ...
Kelly is in southern Saskatchewan and looks like she hasn't been back to Brandon in at least 2 weeks.
Spencer has been exploring east, west and south of Brandon even down just over the border but he's coming home regularly.
Bogart is our homebody relatively speaking. He's travelled not quite as far as Spencer and it looks like he's more interested in the area west of Brandon but he too has been coming home regularly.
* regularly doesn't necessarily mean back to McKenzie Seeds each night, just back to Brandon

Bogart and Spencer are still hanging out at the McKenzie building. Bogart was more accommodating than Spencer picture wise. Hurricane showed up just before I left to go home.

1430h - finally managed to be checking the cam while someone was around. Brooklyn perched on the edge of the nestbox watching over his territory. Had a swivel around with the cam which he was very suspicious of. No one else around that I could see.

Brooklyn was also perched on the nest box at 11:45 am and flew over to the mts tower, so I guess he was back and forth from both places today. Spencer was at the bottom of the clock tower doing a bit of yelling and preening ::) and Hurricane was on the north light.

Was in Brandon today and no luck seeing anyone at McKenzie Seeds ... likely not early or late enough in the day.
Lots (and lots) of pigeons looking way too relaxed and comfortable so I think Hurricane had been away for awhile! ;)

It looks like the Ravens have taken up residence at the McKenzie building again this year. There was two of them perched at the bottom of the clock tower this afternoon. Maybe they will keep some of the pigeons at bay. ;)

this is how we truly know the peregrines are gone in our area. the ravens are a plenty.

Bogart is hanging out in Texas/Louisiana along the coast, Spencer is in Texas and Kelly is in western Mexico.
Looks like Spencer decided that Texas wasn't to his liking and has relocated to Mexico.

I haven't heard anything since, but I think in this case that is not good news ... the plan was to see if someone local could check out the area where the transmitter signal was last recording ... will post if I hear anything ...
