May 1 - Nest Check
We checked the nestbox today to check if Princess continued laying. Last time we weren't sure if one of her eggs had a puncture but it looks like it might just have been a dark spot. When we checked today we found three eggs, one that looks like it might be the one we though was damaged and incubation has begun. If there is a fourth egg laid we'll know that the first egg wasn't damaged, if only three, then could be that egg one was damaged and was quickly discarded. In any case, the three eggs today all look great as does Princess and Smiley.

Can you provide us with an ETA for hatching? Are the Royals in the nestbox or the East ledge? TPC, you must feel some relief to have the forum back up. Catch a breath, you now have a season of work ahead. I, for one, sincerely appreciate what you (and others) have done for us. :) Smiley has an emoticon named after him. ::)

I am glad that Princess and Smiley are in the west nest box. It will be great to have sound from both McKenzie Seeds and the Radisson nests this year. I am looking forward to seeing and hearing the chicks and parents, feedings, and all of the excitement! Woo hoo!! ;D

Bless you TPC! :-* I don't always post in the off season but the minute the birds started coming back, I felt that I was cut adrift without any way of knowing what was happening.
We have eggs, yeah Princess. Am waiting for the cameras to go live.

Birds are in the west nestbox this year thankfully, one less thing to worry about with a new male and an older female who got a wee bit beat up earlier this year (more on that later when I have more time - and yes, she's fine, no worries). Smiley didn't seem to much like the nestledge, liked the nestbox but he has atrocious manners - he poops in the box and has yet to figure out how to make a scrape, which is unusual in my experience with males. Actually Smiley's an unusual character all the way around - more too on that later when I have more time ;)
But you want details, okay ... look for a hatch date at the end of May/beginning of June - I'm inclined to think beginning of June though. That would put banding late June, fledging in the second half of July. Both CBC and Eye-Spy are knee-deep in upgrades to the computer hardware/software (XP related) but we are still hoping everything will be in place to go live at least a week before the eggs hatch.

He is and he isn't :D
Smiley is the son of Terminator who is the daughter of Zeus who is the son of Phoebe who is the sister of T-Rex who was the father of Trey who was the father of Ivy. So Smiley is related the Radisson birds, but back before Princess arrived and added her genetics. Hurricane and Brooklyn are the only birds who are fractionally more closely related to one another and they are distant cousins in the scheme of things. Beau and Beatrix and Hart and Joli are not related at all to their mates this year. So though we have lots of newbies (Beatrix, Hart & Smiley) they are providing a whack of new material to our gene pool. Who says romance is dead ;)

LOL! Had to read that several times in order to connect the dots. Almost sounds biblical... "Terminator begat Smiley, etc. etc." Have no idea how you keep it all straight, TPC. But am certainly glad you possess such a gift. 8)
Great news that Princess & Smiley have eggs. Will be interesting to see what kind of dad Smiley is.
On another note, weren't Princess & Hart an "item" before Smiley claimed the Radisson nest box?
If so, could it be possible that some of those eggs have Hart's genes in them? Just wondering? :-\

I was going through withdrawal without my spring peregrine fix. Smiley the little guy that looked like he was going to stay in Winnipeg for the whole winter is back. As I recall he tried scratching last fall. He is a character. Princess is having a fling with a younger male. :o Gosh I hope that works out!
Thank you TPC for getting the forum back up and running. I can just imagine how terribly stressful that must have been. It is appreciated. Thank you to all concerned.

Actually, this is Smiley's second shot with this strategy - though he failed last year, he was in the right place with a very receptive female with Joli until Cowboy came back. And he's in good company ... Trey did exactly the same thing and look how well that turned out! And Screech out in Brandon was another right time, right place male - he happened to be around when Zeus took one of his sabbatical years and the result was - Brooklyn! Another good result. Sometimes the sneaky (aka patient) peregrine begats a dynasty.

Without actually diagramming Smiley's ancestry, I'm guessing that his relationship to Trey is distant enough that he is actually bringing new blood to Princess's offspring. It'll be interesting to see how he differs from Ivy.

Will miss Ivy this year - (hope he's ok!!) - but it's nice to have a new birdie to get to know. Princess will train him well I'm sure. I'm just SO glad they're in the West Nest - shelter from the howling winds and rains - Phew!! ;D

Yes this is his first nesting - he hatched in 2009 in Grand Forks. His full sib & nest mate is Alice who was in Wpg in 2010 and Brandon in 2011). First report on him after he fledged (so far as we know) was in West Winnipeg in the spring of 2010, then again in 2012 and then at the Radisson in 2013, then HSC when Ivy booted him out and then south of the Radisson territory when Cowboy kicked him out of the Logan territory. Now he's back and he's hit the lottery, an experienced female and the top spot in Winnipeg.

Actually, not really.
Pop was our first male who was replaced by his son (from the first wild nest) T-Rex, who was replaced by Simba, a nephew of T-Rex's from Brandon (Simba was a son of Phoebe), who was the replaced by T-Rex's son Trey, so was replaced by Trey's son Ivy and now Smiley who is a 2nd cousin once removed through Terminator (grand-daughter of Phoebe).
So still in the family and making a pattern of sorts, 2 Radisson males, 1 related outsider, 2 Radisson males, 1 unrelated outsider ... Simba was around for 2 years, Smiley is 5 years old now so we'll have to see what kind of longevity he has ...

His longevity may depend on how well he performs. Princess is not known for her gentle nature.

Would depend on the alternative ... if she returns (keep in mind she is 12 years old this year) and if she has two candidates - Smiley and another male - then Princess may side with Smiley or she may just stay out of the "negotiations" and go with whomever wins. She didn't seem to have any problems choosing between Hart and Smiley this year, so theoretically she could do the same next year.

Thanks to Eye-Spy the cams at the Radisson are back up and operating. Now we need to wait for the CBC upgrades to be completed and we can finish getting the Radisson equipment ready for us to go live. When the CBC upgrades are ready we should be ready to go out to Brandon and reinstall all the cam computer gear and then we should go live shortly thereafter. Tentative "go live" date is after the Victoria Day weekend sometime. When I have a better estimate I will be sure to post it.

Oops, almost forgot :o Eye-Spy reports a 4th egg in the nestbox and my first look through the cams again was of Smiley looking not half-bad getting onto the eggs to incubate. Maybe he will turn out to be a keeper after all ... have to wait and watch and see ...

This may be a dumb question, but if Smiley was unable to make a scrape, did Princess make it? Or did she just lay the eggs (four - yay!) without one?

Princess made the scrape, not as deep as the one Ivy used to make but certainly what she needed. Considering how fast Smiley has figured out how to get four eggs under him, I'd like to think he will figure out that a good scrape makes him more appealing to the ladies.

I have seen some fly bys with a couple of unidentified Peregrines demonstrating their tuck, dive and soar skills this spring and I couldn't help but wonder if Smiley was showing Princess a favorite spot of his. Last night at 12:15 a falcon landed outside the bedroom window with the usual sqwaking that I associate with Smiley. I did not get to identify the visitor but it left this morning at 6:05 when my cat meowed. As I am moving soon (in June) I was thrilled. I know how lucky I am.

No she was fine, just a bit banged up. Caught her on video doing all the usual stuff, flying, hunting, scrape building.

WOW! Went to your photo album, F2F - those are awesome photos! 8) Interesting, that close-up of the very distinctive patch of grey feathers on left breast. TPC or Dennis may be able to ID the bird from your amazing photos, although no ID bands.

The link to your photo gallery works very well F2F - and looking at that bird's feet, it is a female. There are a whole whack of tundrius birds on migration right now so the bird might hang out or might be gone one morning. To my eye, that is a mature female, no reason she shouldn't be on a nest somewhere so she may not stay long.

For those who know who Island Girl is, she is on the move - reached Panama yesterday afternoon. She was pretty much in the same location this time last year. Based on previous year's she'll be on Baffin Island when the Radisson & McKenzie Seeds chick hatch. Three out of the last five years she has reached Baffin on June 4, last year it was June 3rd and in 2010 she got there early on June 1st. Looking at Hawk Count, 25 peregrines were recorded in Michigan alone in the last 7 days - 9 were reported at one location yesterday, we haven't seen that anywhere all season.

The visiting peregrine left this morning at 6:30 am.
TPC - I am quite certain that you are correct that she is passing through on her migration. She looked plum tuckered out and dozed and preened pretty much her entire 36 hr. visit. We are on the south side of the building on the 25th floor so it makes sense that if she was coming from the south heading north, our ledge is a fine resting point on her route.
TPC you mention that you can tell she is a female by her feet. Can you elaborate?

Female peregrines are larger than male - that includes their feet. Males feet are big but more gracile than the feet of females. Females feet make you think twice about getting in their way. Your peregrine's feet were definitely in the latter category.

Love your photos Feather2Fin! The mark on her left breast looks like an old blood stain to me, maybe she was in a scuffle with another bird. :-\

Probably arrived about 10:30 or 11:00 but left again at 11:20 pm. Maybe she wants to settle in Winnipeg but all of the males are taken, or not to her fancy.
If she is going to stay in Winnipeg maybe we should name her. Hmm maybe something to do with her greyish green feathers on her left chest. BTW-I don't think it was dried blood.

We've had birds hang out for a couple of hours, couple of days, couple of months, then take off. Alice stayed for a whole summer then a couple of months the next spring before heading off with Zeus to Brandon. We had seven unbanded peregrines on a building one year who were gone 6 hours later. The tundra birds are moving and should be on their nesting grounds in early June, if you girl hangs out until then, the chance that she will hang out for the rest of the summer is pretty good.
Urban peregrines do apparently if there is enough light to do so safely - remember they fly at high speeds. Some of the birds they like to eat are active after sunset but not over the night so might have been that. Or she could have been checking out where to roost, mostly they like to roost out of the wind so she might have been checking out her choices or she could just have been taking a last constitutional.
As for naming her, without bands hard to know for sure if it is the same bird if she disappears for a few weeks or months. The green on her breast won't stay, it could very well be blood or something else but it will wear off as she preens and/or when she moults as the year goes by. Thing to do is get as many photos as you can without distressing her - head shots so you can see the pattern on her head which will look different depending on how she sits, stands, stretches, etc, but sometimes you can spot a unique feature - like Brooklyn's very white breast and Princess' crown of light coloured feathers on her head. See if you can spot something like this - something that will survive her annual feather moult - and then, if she stays, that's when to consider what her personality is telling you should be her name. T-Rex got his name because of his hyper-protective personality, Hurricane because she hatched in a year with a ton of tornadoes in the province during the nesting season and Ty because he and his siblings were giving me headaches - they hatched on the Radisson nest ledge.

Having followed the forum, since the beginning, I think; it always amazes me at all the new information that I receive every season. Some things I probably forgot but mostly, it is interesting details to add to the peregrine story. There is so much more to learn.

1150h - Princess is dozing on the eggs out of the rain in the nestbox; she was a bit fussy earlier, took her about 90 minutes to get the eggs the way she wanted them. Smiley looks to be doing a decent job incubating, guess the proof will be when we have chicks hatching. Then he'll have to prove he can keep his growing family fed - bringing home the food & technically feeding chicks. But any male after Pop, T-Rex, Trey and Ivy was going to have to work hard to prove himself!

So very glad the eggs are in a protected place this year! It was so awful to watch Princess in that horrible rain last year. Although I will never forget it, her determination to protect those eggs was one of the most incredible things I have ever seen.

I agree, it is nice to watch her sound asleep with her head in the gravel in the nestbox ... she's been a bit fussy arranging the eggs when she takes over incubation, might be a function of a shallower nestscrape (don't know for sure, just a thought) but once she's on, she seems to settle nicely.

interestingly Smiley comes to visit Princess when she's on the eggs. She barks at him and he hangs out on the box edge nonetheless. On the other side of things, when he's had enough OR if he hears her when we can't, then he hops off the eggs and sits on the box edge until she turns up or leaves and she comes bolting in a minute or two later. And they both seem to feel protected enough so sleep pretty deeply by all appearances. Hopefully he's a more relaxing presence, last thing our "grand dame" needs is more a hyperactive youngster for a mate.

No idea, she just seems, at least right now in the middle of incubation, less agitated, less control-freak, less diva-like. Maybe she will morph back into Scary Princess as it gets closer to hatch, we'll have to wait and see ...

I'm sure that being IN the nestbox this year is making a big difference.
With more peregrines in town and passing through, demands on territory would be increasing. Last year they were on the ledge and fighting to keep others out of the nestbox. They would have needed to be very scary last year.

Was in the downtown area this morning for an appt. On my way home, around 11:00 AM, , I was fortunate to see 2 PF heads poking out of the nest box. While I was waiting at a red light, 1 of the birds flew off. They must have been doing a shift change. 8)

A couple people have commented on the "pellets". There is a huge second pellet from the most recent visit. The first one looked like she had horked (is that even a word?) up a dehydrated mousey, bird alien. Is this falcon poop? I am used to seeing the whitewashing of walls so I wasn't sure which end this came out of.

Horked is s very apt word for pellet expulsion. The first time I saw it happen I was horrified. I thought I was watching the bird choking to death on something. I was so relieved when I saw what was actually produced after all that effort.

"Horked" is very apt. Pellets are peregrine versions of cat hair balls except where a hair ball is a cat's own hair, the pellets are the undigested remains of meals - feathers, bones if birds, if bugs like grasshoppers or giant water bugs, wings and carapaces. So yes, "horked up a dehydrated mousey bird alien" works. :D

I am not sure that the female is alone anymore. This morning I saw two falcons flying to the roof. I'm concerned that they may try to nest on the roof. I'm not sure how keen the mangement of the building will be about a nest on the roof. Also, they are doing some work on coating balconies which requires scaffolding from the roof.
What is the legislation about discouraging nesting or interfering with the nest of an endangered species? ???

TPC updated the info on the main index page of the Forum:

Eggs at Radisson & McKenzie Seeds are due to hatch about the beginning of June.
So long as all the upgraded computer equipment will "talk" to each other,
the CBC Manitoba Falcon Cams will go live before the chicks begin hatching.
I will post launch date when we have one.

Princess is napping on the eggs. She is tucked in under the roof on the box all nice and dry, doesn't even look like her beak is getting damp (it has in the past!). The gravel in the exterior part of the box is damp an there is some water puddling on the nestledge but nothing that will make the peregrines take any notice of.
Oops, now she's bored and playing with pebbles ... definitely into the second half of incubation!

With all this rain these days, I'm so glad that Princess & Smiley chose the West nest box to lay their eggs & raise their upcoming brood. :)

Box is nice and dry, Princess has been sleeping on the eggs with her head inside and just the end of her tail and wing feathers outside getting damp, didn't seem to bother her in the least. Smiley came in just before 1000h to relieve her. No rush on either of their parts - heck, he even had time to preen a couple of breast feathers before walking over and getting on the eggs. This young man needs to up his incubation game. Eggs aren't at risk, he's just not as diligent as our Radisson males have been in their incubation duties!! We'll have to see if he's better at the "chick rearing" stage.

Maybe, or maybe just his personality. Not a big character flaw if it is.
He likes to preen a lot does Smiley, maybe he feels he must live up to his name and always be presentable and smiling ;) (yes, that is very anthropomorphic!)

I'm glad for a couple of reasons - one of course is relative ease of access at banding - the other is that these two are sleeping during incubation more than I have seen them do in a number of years. Nice that they can do that undercover and out of the weather but also from anything avian that might disturb them.

Everything's looking so good this year for the Royals - much preferred nest location, Princess back as wonderful as ever and desirable (non-related and young) male to be the new dad. ;D

Accident maybe. Or just very late and knows he's too late. Or very late and Smiley explained the new pecking order and he's off somewhere else. Or he found another lady friend ... he been awfully friendly with ladies in the past - Lucy, Jules, Princess, Sandy and Joli.
If he is around somewhere and someone gets a look at his leg bands, they will hopefully report it and we'll get notified, but could take more than a few months depending on when reported and how big the backlog is at the banding office.

Shift change about 15 minutes ago and Princess is on the eggs once again. Don't think we are quite ready for hatch, she tends to do all the incubating once the kids start to make noises inside the shell. Smiley had his usual shift from 8 to just a few minutes ago so all seems to be progressing the way it usually does. We are day 28 of incubation by our count, so 4-7 days more if the time remains about the same. But every year is different ....
Equipment is talking nicely to one another at the Radisson, now we are checking that it will talk to the internet ... hope to have a launch date for everyone very very soon.

I just checked the CBC site and low and behold I can view the web cam this year at work. Nice clear picture. I have no sound tho. Who knows if I will continue to get it at work tho. One day I could view Dennis's photo site and then at lunch it was blocked and has been since then at work.

Easy ways to tell Princess and Smiley apart
- Princess is larger than Smiley but there isn't as much of a difference as there was with Ivy
- Princess has more light coloured feathers on her head, Smiley's is all black. If you see wisps of light colour on his head it's because his "do" is messed up - doesn't happen often, he preens more than any bird we have ever had
- Princess' speckles come up higher on her breast, Smiley's breast is whiter

Heard on "Up to Speed" that the webcam was live ;D Rushed home to tune in and have checked in every once in awhile all evening to see Princess on the eggs...yawn ::)

At the moment, Smiley has the incubation thing down, well, except when he leaves before Princess arrives, not a real issue, just not what she's used to. The real test will be how he deals with the increased work load (hunting, hunting and more hunting) when the kids arrive. He's also a bit bigger than Ivy so he may be able to help out more keeping the kids cool/dry in the first few days after they hatch - there was a point after about day 7 when Ivy couldn't get them all under him, which wasn't so much an issue when they used the nestbox but was an issue on the nestledge.

That would have been Smiley leaving ... more times than not he's been leaving before Princess arrives.
Don't worry too too much about the colour of the eggs, it's a function of the laying process - it gets "painted" as it travels, sometimes darker, sometimes lighter, sometimes with more splotches, sometimes with less. Princess has laid lighter coloured egg(s) in the past with no problems.

2156h - light is just about to go and for those wondering who is on the eggs at the moment, it is Smiley. Usually the parent on the eggs at 2200h is on until shift change at between 0400h and 0430h. Usually it is Princess who is on the night shift but perhaps she knows what is coming and is taking a bit of extra time for herself ...

Shift change at 2354h last night - Princess came in for the night shift a bit later than usual. This mornings shift change was right on time 0441h, Smiley came on for early morning and then Princess took over again at 0920h which is a bit earlier than usual if I recall. She seems to be pretty happy napping on the kids, might be that she doesn't want the afternoon shift which is much warmer though there is a nice breeze in the box so that may make it more comfortable for whomever is on duty.

the forecast doesn't mention it but the wind is currently East 30 gust 40 km/h - since we can see movement in the box, must be swirling around the top of the building

Yes, that is Princess right now and yes, Smiley is bigger than Ivy but still smaller than Princess. I know, that doesn't make it very much easier for you :)

Usually Princess' eggs hatch out between 32 and 35 days so we may have chicks here shortly or it may take a bit longer.

Thanks, TPC. :-* I guess if I keep in mind that Smiley's head is all black & Princess has some light coloured feathers on her head, that should help me. Just have to be able to see their heads, though. If they are not facing the webcam & I can only see their tail feathers, it is difficult for me to tell them apart.

I always think of shuggling as being the more gentle rearranging during incubation than the spinning just before hatching. Or maybe it is just that the frequency goes up and they seem a bit rougher when I know the babes are about to arrive. I'll have to watch a little closer ...

1157h - Smiley stayed on the eggs until Princess came to relieve him - that's a first. He was talking to her but she was dead silent coming back into the box and settling down. Couldn't see any sign of pips on the eggs but often hard to tell in this kind of light (it's overcast outside today).

How great to come back after ten days without internet to see that the webcam is up and Princess is on the eggs! (well, mostly on the eggs--there was some nest cleaning going on and the eggs were visible every time she leaned forward) Thanks again to the Manitoba Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project and CBC for this excellent and informative opportunity to see nesting birds.

Finally, Smiley didn't leave the eggs uncovered before Princess arrived to relieve him. Usually he just takes off and she turns up a couple of minutes later. Might just be the cooler temps tonight or he's learning or perhaps the chicks are making their presence known ... only time will tell.

Princess is in the top corner, Smiley on the bottom corner. (Photo on the left is slightly more zoomed in than the one of the right)
You can see there is a difference in body size but not as much as with Ivy. If you look closer, you can see that Princess has more mass than Smiley and her wings/tail are a bit longer.

1603h - shift change, Smiley off, Princess on. Smiley didn't leave until she arrived and she usually doesn't like to hang out in the nestbox in the heat of the afternoon unless she has young chicks or soon will have chicks.

He's getting better - he went out to have a little look around and to pick on some pebbles but now he's back. Guy has a hard time staying on the eggs/chicks past a certain length of time - fortunately, the hardwiring seems to be kicking in and overcoming his natural inclination to wander off.
The air temperature is warm so no worries for the chick if left uncovered for short periods of time. When the sun comes around however, he or she better keep their butts on the kid to keep him/her cool, it is a warm sunny day today!

Had a look around with the skycam and the spycam and couldn't see Princess in any of her usual spots, but that's not really very unusual, she often sits where we can't see her with the cameras - the towers on top of the building is one of her favourite spots for example ...

Actually at 1543h Smiley did turn up on the edge of the box with a meal and he hopped into the box but she wasn't getting off to get it from him (which she did during incubation) so he flew off again ... she's an experienced female, got to believe she knows what she is doing, however ... :-\

I was feeling sad each year Smiley made another long trip back to Winnipeg but not able to find an available mate, then spending his summer alone. Great to see he is now enjoying this exciting new experience :) Hopefully he and Princess will adjust well together as we all want the chicks to be provided for, of course.

Another year, another brood, and it's still as exciting and nail biting, as ever. :P

We have been spoiled watching Ivy and Trey provide for their families. Chicks aren't born hungry, they have been living on the yolk and still do for the first day after hatching. When they are hungry chicks prompt their parents so our first chick probably happy napping through the day then decided it wanted food which point, s/he got fed. Would explain Princess waving Smiley off earlier in the day and the couple of shift changes that didn't include any food.
So all is good folks.

After the rain stopped, Smiley started making pretty regular visits to the nestbox, mostly with food I think through the night = 0148h, 0319h (mealtime I think), 0435h (refused), 0442h (mealtime), 0501h (wo food), 0616h (wo food), 0619h, 0626h (failed handover? or refusal?), 0632h (mealtime), 0850h (meal for Princess, chick napped).
If he gets his pattern regular in some fashion and he manages to figure out what Princess wants for the kids in terms of size & packaging, then Smiley could do very well. I was having a look back through some of my notes and he seems to be very interested in what Princess is doing with squishy-fluffy which Ivy was as well, but Smiley seems much more interested or attentive. This an anthropomorphic description but similar behaviour in Ivy preceded his development into a phenomenal provider for his family, so we'll have to see if the same holds true for Smiley.

So maybe the recent hatching of a 3rd chick is the reason why Princess would not leave the chicks & let Smiley take over for awhile. :-\
At this stage the only reason she let's "dad" sit with the kids is when she needs to get out to do whatever lady peregrines need to do, then she's back and booting them out again ;) Won't last too long and Smiley seems very enthusiastic about helping out ...

I couldn't say that males have never been on the eggs when hatching but that would be the exception to the rule I believe.

I watched this happen live. It was so funny, when he showed up she's yelling at him that he's not needed and he's not leaving, then she settled and still he waited. Then I wasn't sure if he was poking behind her trying to get her off the chicks and eggs so he could take over or if he just wanted to make sure they were still there (status quo). I guess the evil eye she gave him finally sent him away. Hahahaha....

Princess is not used to this, having the Dad coming in the nest box and just staying. Usually the others took off as soon as she squawked. He is quite persistant. I like seeing the two of them in there at the same time.

Not sure about calm Alli, but I think she is becoming resigned to the fact that she no longer has a kow towing mate. Yee haw, a new generation of birdies that break the rules..... love it.

I find it so interesting how even raptors/birds change their behavior, habits, body positions, etc...It's very intriguing and captivating.

I possibly saw Princess return with food this morning, think it was just before 11:00 but was in a rush so could be wrong.
I’m guessing Smiley is probably exhausted from trying to fetch food and guard his family over the last few nights. When he is on the eggs, it appears he nervously watches for Princess to return, only to quickly boot him out again!
Hopefully if allowed sufficient time with the chicks he might be able to relax better... and possibly even catch a nap.

I believe last year, 1 chick died shortly after hatching, due to the nasty weather, 1 egg was not viable & 2 chicks hatched & fledged successfully. So I guess it's just "wait & see" now. :-\

If the remaining eggs hatch, an absolutely wonderful thing of beauty.
But, for the reasons unexplained by nature, we were only meant to have two chicks, well, they are nature's gift.
There are a lot of variables with a new mate this year, and, Princess is getting up there in age.
But, I'm also writing this with no expertise, so, not sure...
I'll take two adorable chicks, no matter which way it goes! :)

Breakfast at 9:00. When Princess left with the carcass, Smiley flew in, had a good look at the chicks, tried to get on them but Princess flew back and chased him out.

Went back to check the video and just two chicks during the last meal I'm afraid. Interestingly, when I checked another camera angle, I saw Princess doing something with one of the eggs, like picking at the shell - I don't think it was just the surface. Could be we have another hatch on the way or maybe the egg is non-viable ... Princess has always been difficult about keeping her back to the cameras, no different this year!

When he brings in food - take a look at it, so far it looks mostly like large passerines though it is hard to tell what exactly. Noot sure I have seen a pigeon in the bunch and I'm not sure there have been any/many shorebirds either - he likes to leave the legs on and I'm not sure I've seen shorebird-long legs. Not sure where he's hunting but he's persistent about his choice of prey as well. They may be smaller than Princess may want at this point but they aren't easier to catch so point definitely in his favour!

I also noticed the different type of prey coming in and have not seen one pigeon so far, was wondering what the new prey was, and what happened to the pigeons.

Any chance viewers of the Radisson would have an online option to enable switching between a ‘Nestbox View’ or ‘Ledge View’ Cam, TPC? Would sure be nice to see what is happening on the ledge, and during the night there is added help from the street lights! I’ve seen this on some other live cams. Maybe out of our reach, but just wondering.

Mortality drops off significantly after year one so that average lifespan has been reported at about 16 years. But as you can tell from watching all the webcams, lots of birds aren't resident breeding birds for all that time. As for an individual bird's fertility, I'm afraid I can't tell you.

We missed a feeding while the cam was out ... Smiley brought home KD - actually Smiley brought home the ENTIRE HUMONGOUS INTACT KD - Princess almost couldn't drag it into/across the box and then after feeding the kids still almost couldn't drag it back out of the box!! ;D

Two chicks yes, but I don't know about the eggs. Even going through the recording, its almost like they were there one minute and gone the next while Princess was on them (before her little housecleaning near the camera). Might be they are on the far side of the chicks or it may have been that she finally broke them up ... just have to wait and see I'm afraid ... keep your eyes open folks ...

There a few ways to tell Princess from Smiley (other than her personality), not always fool-proof depending on light, location & how their feathers are sitting ... however, here are a couple of things to look for if you are so inclined ...
- Princess is still larger than Smiley though definitely harder to tell because he is larger than Ivy was
- Overall colouration - he's darker than she is overall - she's always had lighter-coloured markings on her head and she's older and her feathers are more light slate-grey than dark slate-grey
- Head patterns - Smiley's head is uniformly dark, no markings though sometimes you can see the lighter-coloured under-feathers all peregrines have. Princess has her crown which this year is more roughed-up, less crown-like - with their back to you you can see their heads usually.
- Breast patterns - Princess has speckles higher up on her breast which granted is hard to see when she's on the eggs/chicks, so look up the sides of her breast by her wings - you can usually spot speckles high up the sides - Smiley doesn't have those.
- Facial pattern - often you can spot a white band across the "bridge" of Smiley's beak, Princess' isn't as evident unless the light is right; they both have decently sized and irregularly shaped cheek patches, problem is facial feathers move around as the birds move so unless there is something very distinctive - like T-Rex's full black cap or Princess' crown, feathers patterns are a tricky thing to use for identification
- Leg bands - unless you can read the numbers, the bands won't help you much they both have black/green bands on their left legs and anodized purple bands on their right legs. And when they are in the nestbox, they tend to stay low so hard to see their feet
Anyone else have other distinguishing characteristics to share?

Okay, here's what I have observed.
When the birds are on the chicks, Smiley has his left wing tip over his right. Princess is just the opposite, right over left.
Princess hunkers down while on the nest, Smiley is more upright, sort of like an on guard pose.
When you can see them face on, Smiley's malar stripes appear squared off and rectangular while Princess's are more rounded.

Well, that was interesting. Chicks left alone briefly and start complaining, both adults arrive and have a "conversation", then Smiley takes off and Princess settles on the chicks. Very different sounds from the two adults.

Great to have all those tips on IDing the difference between Princess & Smiley... The 2 chicks sure are growing up fast. I guess the other 2 eggs weren't viable. Still, good to have 2 hatches, at least. And hopefully, they will be banded, given that they have nested in the west nest box where TPC, Dr. Bob & Dennis can access them. :)

There was a cute exchange between Smiley and the chicks a few minutes ago. It looked as if they thought he was going to feed them, and he touched beaks with them in a "pretend feed" manner. That is what it looked like, anyway. Perhaps someone saw the beginning of it and he actually did have food.

I think Smiley is there now and the chicks want food but he does not have any. The chicks keep reaching up to his beak for food. It looks so cute. He is just sitting there and looking at them. Would be a nice picture but I don't know how to capture one.

Hard to know for sure. Could be environmental, she does migrate so gets to sample prey from lots of locales. Could be her age, she is 12 but that isn't over the hill yet or it could just be this year with one suitor, then a fight then a new suitor she wasn't going to produce 4 viable eggs.
Another possibility is all 4 eggs were viable but only 2 of the chicks were strong enough to hatch out.

No, these eggs are definitely Smiley's, the timing doesn't work for Hart ... and Smiley is old enough, he's five years old, Hart at only two was more of a question mark for us this year, but that too didn't seem to be a problem.

I use non-viable for both infertile and did not hatch for whatever reason - didn't develop, didn't develop enough, chick died in the egg, etc. Technically I believe eggs that don't hatch are either infertile or non-viable. Since we don't candle eggs and rarely get our hands on eggs (and don't make the specific effort to retrieve eggs) non-viable is for me the term I prefer because I don't know if they are technically infertile or non-viable. A bit like no news is good news - all the eggs are viable until the parent destroys it or flies it out of the box.

Not a clue, Beatrix was around but we didn't see her downtown and when I saw her during the day she was calm and totally untouched. Beatrix has been stapled to West Winnipeg since she came back into town, rarely did we not see her at/near the nestsite. So no, not Beatrix and not Joli either, she didn't arrive home for another 5 days. No Smiley either. At that time Beau and Beatrix were involved in serious hanky-panky in West Winnipeg and Hart and Princess were the only birds in town and they were both at the Radisson and he was courting her. No other birds on the cameras, no other unidentified birds seen around town either.

They will when they are ready to, or not.
Chicks will be old enough to thermoregulate, if egg still there, likely will get rolled to one side and ignored if not removed.

On the Crescent birds could be any of our Winnipeg birds and too close to be another nesting pair, so just birds on the move. All our birds hunt over the rivers, waterfowl and waterbirds are their preferred prey. Smiley in particular has this year been partial to waterbirds/shorebirds.

The Radisson birds are high and dry in comparison with everyone else so a little drip is nothing to worry about ;)

Princess is napping and so are the kids under her and everyone one is dry. One of the kids is using the egg as a pillow.
Humidity is starting to fog up the camera some, but that will clear up when it stops raining.

Interesting how nesting boxes are built in many styles. The bottom of this box extends right from inside the nest to outside, but no visible puddles! Must have excellent drainage!

I've only ever posted once before here, but I read updates daily.
There was a 4pm meal in which, the one sibling tried to eat a whole feather and in the process, because the parent was in the way,
it looked like the sibling was getting hit in the head with a feather. They couldn't get the feather down so they eventually managed
to get it dislodged. Then, the other sibling decided it would be a great idea to try and swallow a whole feather. For 15 minutes, I
sat watching my screen, driving my husband crazy, screaming for this bird to get the feather out. Finally, he/she got the thing out
and all was well.
I never wanted to climb a building and grab this feather from its mouth, more then I did at that moment. By the looks of things in the 'chick pile', he/she doesn't seem even remotely bothered by what happened. Next time I will just remember to breathe.... ::)

My husband is legally blind so when I'm yelling at a computer saying things like 'GET IT OUT!!! Don't swallow it!!', he tends to wonder if I've lost all my marbles. Which I may have but, that's another matter entirely. lol
I hope there is a recording, it was cute in a way and very stressful at the same time. The poor thing had his/her sibling climbing all over it while it had the worst case of dry heaves I've ever seen. Even though I will never admit when my husband is right, he did tell me several times, once I told him what I was yelling at, that the bird will be fine.
These birds are amazing to watch. They gave me my excitement for the month. ;D

Oh Vivianne, your not the only crazy. I'm sure everyone of the peregrine phanatics would be the exact same way. My family has observed me reacting to a mother stork killing its infant on live cam. I was definitely certifiable. I'm glad I didn't see this scene with the chick choking on the feather "live" but knowing the outcome I'd like to see it now.

Every year, they seem to try and swallow enormous pieces, sometimes with feet. In all my years of watching the falcon cam, I've never seen it turn out badly BUT I also stress every time and hold my breath. :o

It's great to see how the chicks grow and become more assertive about getting food, and take it from the parent's mouth, rather than waiting with mouths open to have the food put in. One chick just snatched a mouthful that was still attached to the dead bird by a long string of something (tendon? vein?) and needed the adult beak to snip the string for them. :-X

lots of hacking up or trying to hack up pellets today. Scared the pants off a lot of first timers let me tell you!! The number of emails I got :D
Yet another thing that isn't pleasant to watch when they are young. Mind you, the adults don't look all that more graceful yakking up a pellet either. Afterwards they just pretend it didn't happen which is kind of funny though.

And it looks like Beatrix might have inherited some of her grandfather's (Trey's) neat genes. Her box has just one small black head sitting in the corner from when it was raining so hard. No feathers or legs or anything. Not like the Radisson - man o man, Smiley has got to learn to just bring the edible bits so the inedible bits don't collect. Never seen the Radisson box this messy this early.

Actually when they try to eat feet they end up having to yak them up again (or have them removed by parent/sibling). That doesn't stop them from trying. Food gets stored in the crop until it passes on to the first of the falcon's two "stomachs". The legs tend to get caught at that part - think sword swallowing. They can eat bones, one of their stomachs I believe can dissolve they, but I don't believe they do it much or often on purpose.
And how do the parents prepare the meal for the chicks? Besides removing the feathers. ???
Usually, food is "packaged" before it comes in. Head off, wings off, legs off as they aren't the edible parts (or not chick-edible parts, the adults do like brains). Often many or most of the feathers are removed as well. Makes it easier to carry food - a pigeon is big - easier to just carry the torso than the whole bird. Can mean larger meals come in - or rather more food per delivery. Trey was the master, Ivy was not so neat but delivered tons of food. This year Princess and Smiley have to pluck their meals in situ (hence the feathered nestbox). Hopefully Smiley will refine his technique as he gets more years and experience under his "belt".

I've been a little preoccupied with other things for the last few weeks, but when I have watched the cam, I see Smiley feeding the chicks a lot.
Now the cam is misbehaving for me and it's hard to devote time to watching it.
Tracy, Vesper was my first peregrine love, Smiley is now my second.

Okay, I'm going to go out on a limb here. A feeding started at 2:34 pm. One parent, one chick. I believe it was Smiley feeding the chick due to the fact that the lunch was not plucked before hand and was done during the feeding. And that only one chick (greedy guts) was fed.
After about 5 minutes the other parent showed up with a meal for the other chick. This meal was less frantic, leading me to believe that it was Princess.
Neither parent showed enough of themselves to make a positive id, but given the behaviour, I'm going with Smiley for the first feeding and Princess for the second.
Again, I could be totally wrong.

I thought it was Smiley - dark head, left wing tip over right, etc. - but I didn't know if Princess was really giving him free reign over the chicks. ;D She wouldn't let him near them for very long when they were tiny. Good for Smiley!

Way to look for the subtle signs, and quite often that's all they give us.
Just my opinion, but I think that Princess is a little overwhelmed by Smiley and his persistence.
Both Trey and Ivy gave way to her all the time, but Smiley seems to be a force that she has not had to deal with before. And she's perplexed by him.
Gotta love the "new age" dads. :)

I'm waiting to confirm that the time works for everyone but it looks like we will be banding the Radisson chicks on Saturday, June 28th at 0930h CDT. I will confirm the time here as soon as possible. Plan is to stream live as usual and there will be a "name the chicks" contest when we know what genders the chicks are.

Less than a minute later, hearing the unmistakable screeches of baby falcons and the chupping of a parent, I tuned in again to see an adult obviously feeding someone...still unseen. Guess they've decided that sitting on the balcony is the place to be!

I did a quick check at around 6:00-ish. I think it was Smiley against the wall, napping, and one of the chicks was out flat in a corner. I checked again a few minutes later and the other chick had appeared. The chick didn't seem to be wet but I think it was just starting to rain. It looked windy when I checked the first time. The feather carpet was blowing a bit in the breeze. ;D

Radisson Banding
With only two chicks to band, it was a very fast banding this morning. We did a little pre-prep to make sure we had everything in place so that added to the "speed". Princess and Smiley have two female chicks this year, one just a tiny bit bigger than the other - not sure if it would be enough to tell on the webcam but if the the chicks were sitting side-by-side, but maybe. Both of the chicks were vocal and feisty, nice things in female peregrines. We did the usual - banded them, photographed them, tidied their nestbox and put the chicks back. Because they were independent little ladies, we put the board at the opening of the nestbox to make sure they didn't rush out on the "balcony" as soon as we put them back in the box. Both Smiley and Princess were in attendance and while not pleased we borrowed their offspring, she's been through this before and that helped to keep him from getting too stressed, this being his first banding. Just had to clean out a wee bit of the nestbox - it may have looked bad on the webcam, but it was much worse in-person!

One of the two girls decided to hang out on the balcony during the last rain (after 1600h) and now is damp and napping at the far end of the nestbox. The other chick has been more circumspect about when she goes out to play and is still dry and napping near the camera.

It's relative - the box looks cleaner than it was but it still has lots of debris in it - I didn't have the tools to clean up much beyond the covered part of the nestbox. Hopefully the chicks will eat outside more (if it stops raining!!) and the wind will help blow out the bits, most of what I pulled out was feathers and a few legs and a pellet or two.

1842h - raining here in Winnipeg (yet again) - 22mm in the last 24 hours.
All our chicks are soaking wet but they are all old enough to get wet and still be okay, particularly since they all have siblings to "pile" with and parents who will join them when it gets colder/wetter. At the moment, just the chicks together in a pile in the nestbox at the Radisson.

An unseasonably intense storm system centered northeast of the Dauphin area is producing strong westerly to southwest winds over southwest Manitoba and the Red River valley today. Winds gusting to 70 or 80 km/h are being reported with a peak gust to 96 km/h at Brandon Airport earlier this morning. These winds together with full tree foliage and saturated ground are leading to several reports of tree branches down along with local power outages. The winds are expected to stay strong into this evening before they start easing off overnight as the storm system weakens somewhat. Until then residents in the advisory area should be aware of the potential for further local tree damage and power outages today due to these strong winds.
The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.

Wasn't sure I could see it from the Radisson but Portage Avenue west of the Hotel curves north enough that we had a clear view all the way to Assiniboine Park. Couldn't seem to find the fireworks at the Forks though .. maybe my timing was off ...

Haven't posted a fledgewatch countdown yet, given the date the last chick hatched, the chicks will be 35 days old on July 10th but they are both females so sometime between July 10th and the 20th.
As for names, have passed along names to the folks at CBC so they can set up a poll on the webcam site as per usual. I'll post more information on the choices when they get the poll ready - hopefully Monday?

I was watching around that time last evening, too. The other chick moved from the back of the box to lie down beside the sister who was preening. It is hard to believe that they will soon be flying off and living by themselves, and flying long distances alone, after being so close for so long and seeking companionship in the nest box.

Just so folks know, I have submitted names for the Radisson chicks to CBC but I haven't heard back.
I've also offered to set up the vote if there is a problem or delay with them running it so hopefully it will be up soon either on the CBC site or somewhere on our site.

The girls have spent a lot of time inside the nestbox today - might be the sun or the novelty of outdoors is starting to wane. Or maybe a growth spurt. Who know, lots of napping today though. Maybe as it gets a bit later and the sun is less full blast on the box they will come out and do some sightseeing from the balcony like they did yesterday.

The chicks have some temporary distinguishing features: One has a large tuft of white feathers in the middle of her back, and the other has tufts on the sides. ;D
The middle-tufted one was on the nest box edge for quite awhile, pulling feathers and wingercizing. I know they need to build strength and agility, but ... yikes! I hope they stay off when the wind gusts are strong today. Oh good grief, now the other one is up there and not looking too steady. And they are both up!
(Wasn't it just yesterday when they were tiny and we were worried about the rain and the cold?)

Girls are inside when the wind picks up then our girl with no tape goes scooting back outside when the wind dies down. Same thing when it rains. Crazy bird - when the winds were really getting going and before the rain, she scooted outside to grab a snack to eat during the storm! This one may not be afraid of anything ... :o

That would be our little no tape (aka silver) band girl on the box edge. As long as she learns to sit, flap, jump up and jump down before fledging properly that is all we can ask!! So far so good though ... not sure she will go for a few more days though ...

Radisson girls are 39 days old today - given the temperature, the wind and their behaviour, I think we may have a few more days to go, but they are smaller so will keep an eye on them today and update again tomorrow.
Unfortunately, this is just my assessment, the peregrines will do as they please without consulting us :D

Both being females, they may take their time before they go - or the least ready may set the timing if her sister doesn't want to start without her. We'll have to see ...

The girls have been particularly cute over the last couple of hours. They have gotten to the point where they like to nip at each other - lots of tail and beak nipping. And if one is napping and the other isn't ready to nap yet, the napper gets leaped on. When these two decide to fledge, pretty sure they will go together.

It may just be the amount of traffic Susha - know that doesn't help much.
I checked the cameras and they aren't freezing so it is an internet connection somewhere. It could be from the hotel to CBC or from CBC to your computer. I checked my CBC site on my laptop, so running wireless and I'm not having any problems, so perhaps it is that in your particular (geographic) area the connection is a bit slower at this time of the day? Just speculation on my part of course!

I've been having the same issue as Susha for over a week now. I know its not my internet speed as I can download
as fast as 4MB/s almost all hours of the day and night. I just assumed it was something with CBC. I even have really
big problems just loading the page without running the cam. Not sure what to make of it, but yes, its a little annoying.

It's been fine at home, so I figure it either the time of day (more traffic) or the browser I'm using at work. Should be working instead of gazing at the birds, but I do like to have the option ::)

Interestingly, I just checked the CBC from both my laptop and my desktop - both are the same age and run the same software and OS. The interesting part is that my desktop which is hardwired to the internet was choppy while my laptop using wireless wasn't - both at the same time. Both using the same version of Firefox. Not sure I can offer anything that might be helpful .... :-\

Went back into the recorder and our no-tape chick has been playing on this ledge all day it seems. She hopped down there just after 0800h this morning and has been up/down the ledge lots of times and back up and down from the box edge as well. And she finds the camera interesting - not sure if she's talking to it or wanting to eat it ...

I'm having problems with the cam freezing for a few seconds...starting and freezing again and it's very annoying >:(
Seems to happen a lot this time of day...anybody else having the same problems?
Yup, I have had the same problem, susha, but usually just in the mornings.
Also sometimes have difficulty logging on to the Forum in the mornings.
When this happens, I receive a message which reads "This page cannot be displayed."
If I am patient, and try again a little while later, I can usually log on then.

We currently have one birdie on the ledge and one on the nest edge. Ledge birdie is trying to get behind the black metal 'rungs' and under the nest. She is also hopefully trying to encourage her sister to come on said ledge by pecking at her feet. LOL Typical sisters
and typical siblings!
On the bright side, my choppiness seems to have settled down for the moment. ./happy dance!

This evening, at home, the "choppiness" is gone. I use Google Chrome at home, but can't get it at work, so the browser could definitely be the issue. And/or the time of day. But I do agree that we are indeed fortunate to be able to see them, however they're being presented!

Earlier today (think it was shortly before 2:00) it appeared a parent flew in (possibly with a bit of prey). I didn't clearly see what happened, so not sure if that was a quick in and out teaser, or if one girl managed to grab something and take it inside with her. If she did, the other one made no effort to steal it. I know the parents might be holding food back, but haven’t been able to watch much today. Anyone know if/when they actually ate?

Haven't found her yet, but not really surprising, mostly can't see them once they go. There was no wind and her departure was intentional and she had good trajectory so fingers crossed she's perched somewhere safe. Princess and Smiley were on the Hydro building (on the sign) earlier so entirely possible they could see her which would mean she's not far from the Hotel.

It was a great time fledge watching this a.m. with bccs. Yesterday's fledger returned safely to the nest box early (very early :)) this morning with Princess and Smiley not far behind her. Her sister, "Vimy"? must have become inspired by her adventurous sister and spent the early morning wingercizing and walking/hopping up and down the ledge. Both parents were nearby most of the time: Princess perching on the tower on the Radisson roof and Smiley doing fly-bys every so often. There was no food drop-off while we were there.

Where exactly did Chapelle come back to? Was it out of camera range? It's useful to know where individual birds return to, it may be part of their personal pattern of preferences which makes it easier to find/identify them later on.
I've checked the recorder for all the cameras and this is the timeline the cameras caught
0303h - adult (Smiley by the size & flight control) dropped by the nestbox without food and Vimy rushed out from inside. Smiley took off and Vimy spent the next 5ish minutes flapping madly on the box edge. (skycam)
0533h - food delivery - again Smiley and Vimy rushed out for food - he didn't stay long and she didn't go back "inside" and was visible on the cams (skycam & ledgecam)
0545h-0700h - Vimy on & off flapping like mad, stomping around in the box, up/down on the box edge
0708h - Vimy hopped out of the nestbox and down the ledge - doesn't like being alone - tried to get under louvres with more force/determination than other Radisson chicks (skycam, box cams x 2 and ledgecam)
0913h - Vimy finally hops back into the nestbox & immediately goes inside (skycam & ledgecam)
0925h - napping in feathers in box (box cams x 2)
1113h - away & up onto box edge (sky cam, box cams x 2, ledgecam)
1126h - food delivery from Smiley and Vimy lunged at him after she took the food (aggressive little thing) but hasn't started to eat it (skycam & ledgecam)

5:40-5:45 would have been my estimate, too, as I arrived shortly after 5:30 and it was a few minutes after that. She flapped her wings "like crazy" as she circled and then went into the box. After reading the report of the timelines of the recordings, I was wondering if we saw Smiley doing the food drop off but our sighting was definitely later than 5:33, and I think we would have seen him carrying the prey and also flying off afterward.

Was fledge watching downtown this afternoon btw 2:00 & 3:00 PM. Spotted a juvie on the nest ledge, to the extreme right of the nest box. Also spotted a PF tucked into the cross bar on the "H" at the Hydro Bldg. Wasn't sure if it was a juvenile or an adult. :-\

Vimy fledged at 5:34 this morning. It was a good fledge, nice and smooth.
She landed on the new condos that are being built and was still there as of 1/2 hour age.
Dennis and I saw her go, poor Sparkster missed it by two minutes.
We walked all around but didn't see Chapelle.
Princess kept her eyes on Vimy, and Sparkster found Smiley on the n of the east Radisson sign.

:( Missed Vimy's fledge. However, it was exciting to see Princess standing...er, sitting guard on the crane and then flying. And to see Smiley, as well. Thanks, bccs, for the acknowledgement of the sighting. At least I was somewhat useful! And thanks also for the great info; I appreciated your experience and knowledge. Both mornings were very enjoyable.

Had a spin around with the camera and couldn't see anyone but one of the adults on the Hydro sign - looked big so I suspect it might be Princess. There are work men on the roof of the new condo building now and I looked everywhere for her but couldn't see her so I suspect she has moved to another building.

Was downtown fledge watching with des btw 9:30 & 11:00 AM today.
We also looked everywhere for both fledglings but were unable to spot either of them.
You're right, TPC, lots of action going on, on the roof of the new condos across the street.
Men working & crane's swinging... so Vimy probably has moved on.
We did, however, spot one of the parents half way up the antenna on the roof of the Radisson.
Might have been Smiley, but not absolutely sure.
He/she stayed there for quite awhile & appeared to be looking north, across Portage Ave.
So we were wondering if Vimy had moved over to the tall glass building across the street - the Assembly of Chiefs Bldg? :-\

A parent stopped by the nest about 3:05, just caught the end. Then, about 3:23 a parent with food arrived and left, and again about 3:27. Hopefully a sign the kids may slowly be getting closer to home. ???

bccs and I fledge watched this a.m. from 7:00-8:10. Looked everywhere but didn't see anyone perched. I saw one in flight, probably a parent, gliding down between the top of the Radisson in a north/northwesterly direction but was unable to see where it landed, as a building was blocking my view. It is very windy today.

Haven't been able to spot the adults in any of the usual perches (can't see the antennae on the top of the hotel of course) and when I checked the recorder this morning, there were no visits by adults or kids.
It might be that this year is one of those years that the chicks don't come back to the nestbox. We'll probably wait a couple of days more as chicks if they want to return to the box generally do within 48 hours, and then the cam may go off for the season. We'll keep an eye on the cams of course and report anything that happens.

Had a look around with the cameras and all is quiet around the Hotel. Smiley then Princess when for a visit to the east side nest ledge - got to be cooler there in the shade at the very least. Couldn't see any chicks on the east though. Checked on the west side and ditto, I'm afraid.

I was wondering that, too. My husband and I went downtown last night as I thought we might see them flying around.
Some years the chicks hang out together in the downtown area, some years they return to the nestbox to hang out, eat and nap, and then some years, they fledge and we don't see them again unless it is as they fly by. Their parents will keep track of them, feed them, encourage them to improve their flight skills and then start teaching them how to hunt and then they are independent and they (the chicks) will leave Winnipeg to go exploring before migrating in the fall. Last year chicks from Manitoba were spread out from Alberta to Ontario and down to North Dakota at the same time. Then they all started to move in unison southwards but they never hooked up again and all overwintered in very different locations (100s of kms between them).
We may see Chapelle & Vimy after they become more confident of their flying skills and start to explore more on their own - no unusual for them to reappear after a month or two at the Radisson for a day, or a week and then they are gone.
As much as we would like to see them again, learning to fly safely without crashing into things is really what we want! ;)

Was at Boston Pizza @ City Place and on way home I am pretty sure I saw 2 falcons flying around rooftop of Delta Hotel. For the last 2 or 3 years the fledges have hung around there. If you are downtown check out this area. It was 8pm when I spotted them.

I think it went off this morning, as all I have seen today is a black "screen". :'( It has been particularly difficult because we haven't had the Brandon cam this year. It just happened so suddenly. Having said that, the nestbox is a sty and I don't blame the chicks for not going back to it. :-X

bccs and I were downtown late this afternoon and saw Smiley on a "flyabout" at around 5:45. He landed on the top of the Artis triangle facing southwest, preened for a short while, and took off when we weren't looking. Unfortunately, there was no sign of Princess or either chick. :(

The buildings there are lower and there are a variety of them and it's closer to the river - for young birds looking for places to land, those are big pluses - the river is a magnet for them. The last couple of years the chicks have spent considerable time there, but they also used to come home at night and to visit regularly for quite a long time after fledging - so the "other" buildings aren't the reason why Chapelle & Vimy aren't returning to the nestbox, they are just where they are hanging out. (hope that made sense ...)

I'm sorry, I thought I answered this one already ... multi-tasking doesn't always work :-\
When the adults fight, it is over territory and hormones play a role in that. The chicks aren't hormonal or territorial so no, no fights. Now chases, that's a possibility since the little terrors chase things all the time - one of the reasons peregrines can get shot is because they chase after crows and being about the same size and dark on their backs and being the last one in the group, well, they can become a target. Would the adults fight over territory now, no not really in part because there are no hormones driving the need to possess territory but they do still defend their territories and will defend their chicks wherever they maybe if they perceive a serious threat.

It's not that unusual Bally, no worries. We usually have one we don't see or only see a couple of times after fledging. It is more unusual for the chicks to come back to the nestbox at the Radisson funnily enough, so we've been a bit spoiled over the last couple of years. Hurricane we never saw after she fledged, Radisson too. Don't recall seeing Ivy either come to think of it. Tenzing and Hillary vanished as well. Maybe the chicks appreciate a clean, neat nest so they don't want to go back and sit amongst the carcasses. It was the messiest nest I've ever seen at the Radisson and they all seem to get pretty bad by the end of the nesting season. Smiley was a great provider but needs to hone his carving and serving skills to keep things a tad cleaner. ;)

Lots of flybys the nestbox in the last couple of days - will see if I can download a few clips. Birds are of course moving too fast to identify, but nice to see anyway. Smiley's visits are less frequent - but spotted Princess over on the east side nestledge on the gravel (so away from the edge of the building) doing some preening in the light breeze. Nice to see her.
Usually in August/September the resident male will start making some new nestscrapes in the nestbox as part of his post-nesting season bonding activities, will be interesting to see what and where Smiley makes scrapes. Maybe he'll do some cleaning first or perhaps it will be the thing that convinces him on-going trash runs are best next year.

The best news......... a peregrine just flew by my new home and she was yelling the whole time.

I have no idea whether it was a Radisson kid or a West Winnipeg kid, but the vocals were music to my ears.
And given past experience, my money is on a girl.

We've never witnessed it here in town but we also haven't had any injured (or dead) chicks found with injuries that might indicate they came in contact with another bird. Adults will defend their chicks but the chicks don't have any imperative to fight with each other so no reason for the adults to get involved. We do know that adults will "adopt" chicks that aren't theirs - it's called fostering and it has been used for years to augment small nests or to relocate orphaned or "extra" chicks. The adults just count them in amongst their own. We've even seen adults treating after-hatch-year birds as though they were chicks or adult birds roosting near hacksites have helped with the feeding of the captive-bred young to be hack released.
We try to scout out and help with nestsites that are far enough away from one another that the birds don't come in contact with one another while their hormones are set on "full throttle" because we'd like everyone to get along, so far, mostly so good. The birds are pretty good at picking their battles, so hopefully, young birds just out exploring the town continue to not be cause for adult concern.

Smiley visited the nestbox an hour ago in order to make a post-nesting scrape to impress Princess and he couldn't find a spot to work in - his little feet started scraping but he couldn't put his breast/belly down in the mess to do the job properly. He wandered all around the nestbox (inside and out) looking for a spot but nothing - then he sat on the box edge, did a lot of preening (just in case something got on him??) and then he just refused to look at the carnage in the nestbox any longer! :D

Was downtown today around 1:30 and had a walk around the Delta, Holiday Towers and other buildings in that area but did not see or hear any falcons. It wasn't that hot and not too windy so thought I might see some action. No luck.

Thanks for making the pilgrimage Linder! It has been very quiet around the Radisson as well - did see one bird (Princess?) on the JR sign early yesterday and then her or Smiley on the sw Artis sign later in the day ...

I missed the JR sign seating! I haven't seen anyone there since Trey left, and it's been very disappointing as it's right out the window and I used to see Princess there all the time.
On the other hand, if they're finding the Artis sign interesting maybe they'll be flying right in front of my window on a regular basis next year! A girl can dream. ;D

I hope Smiley doesn't decide that the east nest ledge is an ideal spot to make a scrape! Perhaps the Radisson would provide "cleaning service" to the west condo nest box after they leave for the winter? :D

Oh, it won't be the Radisson, rather Dennis & I who will be doing the honours. In the spring when we were checking the box, before Smiley even arrived, we had decided this was going to be the year to change the gravel. Generally we only do it every few years because too clean is not (believe it or not) quite as appealing as a little "lived-in". So we'll clean it out this fall once it has had time to dry out (and air out) that way it will be able to "age" over the winter.
As for nesting on the nestledge, he better not. He seems to gravitate to nestboxes - West Wpg, Logan and now the Radisson - so hopefully he will continue to do so. He was hatched in a nestbox for whatever that is worth (hopefully it is worth something). Only way to know for sure is to wait until (if) he returns next spring.

Sorry, that was my fault for being confusing .... since he turned up a couple of years ago he has centred his attentions at nestsites with boxes - first West Winnipeg two years ago, Logan & Radisson last year and legitimately at the Radisson this year. Last year and the year before as I recall, he was at these sites before the resident pairs so not the birds attracting him, rather the sites. Haven't seen him much if at all on the nestledge and hopefully, though the female make the final choice, he doesn't start taking an interest in the ledge. Next year the construction on the condo building across the street will be finished so it should be quieter on the west side next year ... and if the "other" condo building goes ahead, it should be noisier on the east side (if I have the location correct). But who knows, can't count our peregrines before they arrive next March ...

I was downtown for the concert last night. About 7:30, 3 birds were chasing each other between the Hydro building and the Radisson. There are also about 10 crows hanging out on the Wpg Ballet building earlier. One of the birds was definitely a falcon; there was a lot of kakking going on.

TPC -- Just to let you know, I really enjoyed the Quick Visit video. Although a very brief appearance, it was so nice to see Smiley again!

I’ll continue to hope someone might surprise us with a photo of Vimy or Chapelle; meanwhile, I’m wondering if you tried to get a clip of the girls in those fly-bys? I presume you felt they weren’t clear enough (or you probably would have shared). However, we haven’t seen any photos since they left, so I’m thinking it might be interesting to see whoever appeared to be “the girls".

TPC, Sorry I left this aside for a while. I found it quite sad when Chapelle and Vimy never returned to their nest. I’m sure many of us wanted to watch them learn from Smiley and Princess … and to know they were able to fend for themselves … still, I like to believe they managed to find each other.
Your explanations are always appreciated, and this particular answer - including the last part - does make sense; although, the more difficult task was coming to accept it as it is.

I was in the downtown area for an appt. today & spotted a PF on the SW corner of the Assembly of Manitoba Chief's Bldg., across the street from the Radisson. :)

I am glad that there is a sign of peregrine falcon life downtown. I thought I saw someone on the west nest ledge last Friday morning, but didn't trust my sighting without binoculars.
Smiley stayed until around the end of October last year, trying out the different nest boxes. I wonder if he will feel comfortable leaving earlier this year, now that he has established a residence and found a lady friend. ;)

We are having technical problems with the internet connection to the Radisson at the moment so haven't been able to try and identify visitors, but I certainly hope to be able to again soon as this is the time of year when we sometimes get some surprises!!

This morning on the CTV morning show a Peregrine was sitting in front of their camera that faces the Forks. At least I think it was the Forks. I was so busy looking at the Peregrine Falcon. It was very close up and it was defintely an adult. I am not that good at telling them apart but I am thinking it was Princess because there were speckles all the way up his/her chest. The bird must have been sitting there for awhile because when I saw it they commented on how he was still there. The falcon filled the whole TV screen. Feathers were blowing in the wind. :)

I've been talking with the CTV folks to see if they have any additional photos ... not likely I know ... in case I can get an ID on the bird. If I had to guess right now, looking at photos from this time last year, I wouldn't be surprised if this turned out to be Smiley.

I just want to let you know I have updated U of a , Bell and Weber to best of my ability right now. I will do Genesse in next few days
I know how frustrating it is when you do not see your young after they fledge. Every year is different and it changes as adults change.
But Radisson is proof that just because you do not see them, does not mean things are not O.K. I have said this before.
let us hope all our birds migrate safely and we see them at some site.
We have a female form the Mis in Edmonton nesting on Red Deer River and a young male from Weber nesting at the Mis.

Possible/Probable sighting of at least one, maybe two, peregrines downtown this afternoon. As an aside, I recently moved offices such that while I used to be looking up at the sky from ground level, I'm now up in the sky and looking at the goings on from bird's-eye view. Quite different.
In any event, when I arrived back at my office after running an errand, it was reported to me by two office mates that they had been watching what they thought were two falcons flying around and acting all "lovey-dovey" to each other and they wanted me to confirm that these birds were indeed falcons. Unfortunately the two love birds had vanished by the time I got to the window.
I suggested that they may have been pigeons which have been rather plentiful in the skies over the last couple of weeks. My colleagues were indignant and adamant that the birds they saw were not pigeons.
Then as we were talking I saw one bird fly by that most definitely did appear falcon-like. I wouldn't swear it was any peregrine we know, I didn't recognize the bird's colouring or flight pattern. And that's because his/her flight was affected by the load s/he was carrying off - and that WAS a freshly caught pigeon.
I lost sight of her at that apartment building that looks like a milk carton at the corner of York and Carlton. I suspect that's where the meal was eaten.
