Title: Logan - 2016 / Hart & Jolicoeur
Post by: The Peregrine Chick on March 19, 2016, 09:57
Dennis spotted a bird with what looks like a black band near the Logan site but he was just passing through the area on his way to photograph owls (darn owls!  ;) :P)

Might be Hart or Ty, Beatrix, Sundance, Kelly, Spencer or even someone else like Hurricane or Brooklyn or Andamooka before they head west or even Bridtol if Terminator has returned or Annie if he's decided to explore new horizons (not very likely I don't think) or it could be someone else entirely ... the fun begins ...  8)

Hart may be back, may have seen him rooting around in the West Wpg nestbox ... had a female with him but she didn't look familiar and I only saw her very briefly on camera.  Didn't look like Joli or Beatrix.  Did have bands from what I could see and the important one for our purposes looked dark - but whether it is black or black/red, I can't really say for sure ...

For the moment I am going to continue to post here since we have confirmed Hart's identity at the West Winnipeg nestsite ... but since Ty and Beatrix aren't home yet and we don't know who his lady friend is, we are going to keep him and his roaming here ... if he takes over somewhere else, I will move this thread en masse to wherever it needs to be ...

So yes, our Roaming male is Hart ... and since he's a Radisson kid, I know why he looked so comfy on the ledge trying to stare down Smiley.  Smart enough to move along when Smiley asserted his claim on the Radisson and neither bird looks worse the wear from the skirmish I saw at the hotel.  If Hart does keep hanging out at West Winnipeg, he may get the same "hello" from Ty, who we suspect is willing to assert his claim with less restraint than Smiley did.  Both Smiley and Hart are pretty laid back, Ty is very much his father, Trey's, son.

Just so we are talking about the same birds in the same place ... yes the sightings were at West Winnipeg but they are of Hart so until we know where he is going to settle - or get kicked out of, I'm keeping sightings of him here.  We've had cross-over sightings in previous springs and it has gotten confusing, so I'm trying it this way this time.  ;)

I did confirm ( band # ) Hart was at both the Logan and West Wpg. Perhaps trying to decided on a 2 star or go for the 5 star accommodations...time will tell.

Yesterday, March 21, at just after 6 pm, spotted a bird in the WW area on the wall by the nestbox. We had just finished checking out the area with no sightings, when on the way home... there was a bird. So we turned around and headed back. He/She did jump into the box for less than a minute, and then was back on the wall. We left at 6:15 as we had stuff we needed to do.

Yesterday, before 6 pm, spotted a bird in WW on the south east corner. Usually, we would see them on the east or south signs.

Hart and his lady friend are still bouncing from WW to Logan ... I'd like to see him convince her to stay at Logan (if Joli doesn't return in the next few days) so that West Winnipeg is open for Beatrix's return (still pending vet - more on that on her thread).

I may have an ID on Hart's new friend however ... just crossing the Ts and dotting the Is to make sure and then I'll post the information.  She doesn't look like any of our current birds - much darker head so I'll post a photo from the webcam at the same time so folks can put a "face" to the ID.

Hart's little friend looks to be a 2013 wild-hatched chick from the Greysolon Plaza in Duluth, Minnesota.  Dennis and I have been watching her saying she isn't Joli and it is nice to be proven correct.  Her name is Faith.  So far they have just been hanging out at West Winnipeg and at the Logan nestsites, will have to see if it comes to more than that or if she gets pushed out by Ty or Joli (if they return) or Beatrix is she does.

I've contacted the folks in Duluth and they may have more info on Faith to share.  And I'll post a photo of her in the next day - I'll find a good one from the webcam.

I found some information on Faith when she fledged in 2013.   :)

Rescuing young peregrine, Faith, A/33:

The next day we watched the birds and all of them stayed on top or inside the nest box. They were practicing flapping their wings a lot. Later that night, I went to check on the birds again and I noticed one was missing from the box. So I decided I should go look for it. Moments later, I was driving down Superior Street and I noticed a young peregrine perched on a chain fence. She was not far off the ground and a crowd of people were taking photos of her. At this point, I rushed over and talked to the people, I was able to get someone to stay there until I could get our rescue kit. I was told when I returned that she had hit a window of the restaurant she was perched near. I was not sure of her ability to fly back up so I grabbed her and put her in the cage. Again, I contacted people at the Greysolon and brought her up to be evaluated and released. Thankfully, she was also OK after the crash. Now, here is the funny part: Around 20 minutes after I put her back up on the roof, she found her way up a ladder, onto the ledge of the building and was trying to fly again. She took two short flights on the building and one longer one. She flew around to the front of the building and tried to land on it but was instead scraping her feet and flapping her wings wildly trying to land somewhere. I went to the front of the building and found her on the overhang above the Greysolon building entrance. This was the lowest but still safe enough perch for her to be on. So, my coworker Miranda and I decided to stay and watch her a while to make sure she did not end up in the street. Eventually we had to go, and she did not move for a few hours. We were nervous to leave her, but we informed late night businesses nearby of what was happening and told them to call if there was trouble.

Well, Dennis in his wanderings wandered past the Logan nestsite today and spotted a bird he knew was not Faith.  How did Dennis know without reading her band number, well a) she looks very different from Faith even from a distance and b) Dennis has a crush on Joli and while we don't have the new female's band number yet, we can say that she has the same colour combination on legband as Joli has and Hart was sitting with about 10 feet of her - something two adult peregrines don't do at this time of the year at nestsites unless they know each other.  Hart's been a wee bit cloistered, so chances are, Joli has returned though we do need to confirm her band number and of course, stranger things have happened ....

Dennis managed to catch Joli's band number while she was flying overhead this morning - so we can confirm that Hart and Joli are back at Logan.  Question is will Hart be a faithful husband or a bit of a rover?  :o

Hart and Joli have a nice clean nestbox - we couldn't clean it last fall because the weather went very wet and usually we would have the nestbox all checked out and waiting for them before they got back or just as they were returning, but they are back a bit early so this year we were a bit late.  Won't make any difference to them, Joli is already asserting her dominance over the nestbox and the surrounding area.

Hart and Joli (both confirmed at the time by the leg bands) were canoodling near the Logan nestsite so all looks good with this pair for this year.  Hart is hard to read, our little surfer boy, way too laid back and often late to the party (ie, nest checks, banding).  But he seems to work well with Joli and their kids are always well-fed and taken care of and she couldn't do that on her own.  Could just be he is one of the more invisible males - an uncle of his was like that at the Radisson many years ago.  This year, that invisibility may help him if he actually attempts to two-time Joli ... and yes, he was back at the West Winnipeg nestbox this morning to do some renos on the scrape in the nestbox.  Didn't see him involved in some extra-curricular hanky panky with Faith, but who knows.

And the nesting season has begun for Joli and Hart - they are currently incubating 3 eggs (maybe 4 soon).  Hatching should begin after Victoria Day if it is a 4 egg nest, maybe a bit earlier if only a 3 egg nest.

Given the cooler, wet weather recently, haven't been by to disturb Joli & Hart to check them out.  But not really a great need, Joli has done very well as a parent and while Hart is still a bit of a lightweight, he does seem to know what he is suppose to do and does it well enough to keep Joli in top form.

Hatch here isn't due until about the last week of May so lots of time yet.

Took advantage of the break in the rain to check out Hart and Joli at Logan.  We estimated their eggs were due to start hatching on May 24th and looking at the chicks this morning, it looks like they are about 3 days old, so our estimate looks pretty good.  Can't say for sure if there were 3 or 4 chicks - when we checked for eggs last month there were just 3 and incubation hadn't begun.  Suspect that Joli would have laid a 4th but she, and the weather, have not been cooperative.  We space out our visits to only when necessary so once we could confirm she had eggs and that incubation was about to begin we knew we didn't need to check on them until hatch time.  Hatch time came and went however because with the rain we weren't going to take a chance of the chicks getting wet. Then came this morning and it hadn't rained overnight and there was only a 30-40% chance of rain so we thought we see if we couldn't get a quick look.  Took us 4 minutes to get a good look, mostly because Joli was coming in with a meal (a rose-breasted grosbeak - a first for me as peregrine prey).  Chicks remained pretty oblivious to everything other than the fact that mom wasn't sitting on them anymore.  Couldn't tell for sure how many chicks there were in their little pile, but I think 4 - we could see two heads and I think another two butts that couldn't possibly be attached to those two heads no matter how flexible chicks are.  Won't know until we check on them again, which won't be for awhile and will of course depend on the weather cooperating.

Our luck held this morning, it started to rain 20 minutes after we left Logan. Joli would have retrieved her grosbeak, fed her kids and everyone would have been neatly tucked back under her before the rain began.

Joli, Hart and the Logan kids are doing well - still hanging out in a tight pile so can't be sure yet if there are 3 or 4.  Dennis is inclined to think 3, I think the pile looks like 4.  Our visit yesterday was very quick and given that yesterday was their first break from the rain all week, we didn't want to disturb anyone if we didn't have to ... and we almost didn't but Joli has very sharp eyes ... we were gone a couple of minutes later and everyone settled right back down.  Chicks didn't even wake up and you know how loud annoyed parent sounds!!

Okay, lunch time which means it is time for a story ...

Once upon a time (June 14), in a galaxy a long way away from the Radisson, there were the cutest four wookies, oops, sorry peregrine chicks who had a visit from stormtroopers with pails, oops, Dennis and I.  Well just me, Dennis was making goo-goo eyes at his girlfriend Joli yet again.  Actually, Joli was being very cooperative from Dennis' standpoint, she was refusing to get off the ledge as we approached her chicks so Dennis just got low behind me and kept snapping pictures as she kept snapping (figuratively in a mama peregrine kind of way) at me.  She did not like the look of those big pails - whether that was because of her banding or previous banding I couldn't say but she was not pleased that we were there nor that we were about to disturb her babes.  And speaking of the babes, it looked like someone had dropped white piles of cotton candy from a great height - imagine a war zone with fuzzy white bodies sprawled out seemingly lifeless.  They were fine of course, just the polar opposite of the Radisson chicks - their dad Hart's genes maybe?  Certainly not Joli's on this particular day.

Anywho, took just a couple of minutes to scoop the little fuzzballs up, place them in the pails and take them inside - Joli squawking all the time and Hart doing a not bad job at trying to scare us off.  Nothing like Cowboy of course but the boy is doing a not bad job of imitating is grandpa Trey.  So off we all toddled back inside so the chicks could make the acquaintance of Dr Bob and his oh-so-pretty collection of legbands.

They were lovely little chicks - very polite, only a little bit of grabbing (mostly they grabbed themselves a foot or a wing a couple of times) and a very little bit of squawking but nothing like the din their cousins at the Radisson had subjected.  I think I mentioned before that it was like being in a parallel universe where everything was opposite.  They were lovely guests, let us measure their feet and get bands on with no fuss at all, often they just sat in my hand with their feet hanging down while they glared at us.

There were three males and one female, all of the birds here much smaller in the hand than at the Radisson, but the males were about the same weight it seemed to me but the Radisson females were ginormous in comparison with the female here.  All very healthy chicks (though Bob says he saw a bug on one of them) - at least two of the four had very engorged crops - so engorged in fact that when we were banding them (they were males) as I was holding them in my hand, the crop got moved around to the side of their necks and it looked from the back like they had growths on their necks!!  Took me a minute to realize that because they are so much smaller, holding them as I was their crop was off to one side a bit.  Think second chin or neck waddles on a human and you can sort of visualize how they can move - but only when they have food in there, empty and it sits below the feathers.  Very cool actually.  As I said, they were lovely little banding guests and no one regurgitated on us and only one decided to illustrate his displeasure with a little poop-art in his pail (easy cleaning - yet another reason for the pails).

Once the bling was on and Dennis had taken pictures for his files (cute chicks) and ours (band numbers), it was time for the chicks' return to whence they had come and the end of their second rite of passage (first was surviving past to banding age).  Back out we went, Dennis flirting with Joli again, me doing all the work  ;).  Chicks went back in a corner, in a pile for comfort and after a couple of parting family group photos, we pretended, for Joli's sake, that we had been driven off her nest ledge by her terrifying presence.  Door closed and locked behind us there was only a bit of packing up to do and off we went in search of cold water and hot coffee, another job well done.

Many thanks to Dr Bob for coming into town to band with us and to Dennis for distracting Joli with Wowzer!  Many thanks also to the folks at the Logan nestsite for their support, interest, help and discretion.

Looks like one of the four musketeers decided not to wait for the others and fledged today.  They were all together this morning, then they were roaming all over the ledge and then there were three.  So far no reports that this guy has run into trouble and no news is good news.  We'll have to see what tomorrow brings ...

1045h - thought we might have had a second fledge here, but no, just one of the three chicks decided he wanted to sleep on a different section of the roof.  These three don't seem particularly interested in fledging quite yet, not a lot of wingercizing this morning but who knows!  They are the right age for it.

As of today, these four are (best estimate) 40 days old.  They are also the smallest of our chicks.

1550h - think we have had a second fledge and know we have had a first return - but don't know if return is chick 1 or a quick return for chick 2 - no matter, both/either are good news!!

Yup, we definitely had a second fledge yesterday ... only two left on the ledge - male and female and they are not so willing to head out at the moment - they are sound asleep nose-to-nose on a ledge in the shade.

Nice to know the female and one brother are resting comfortably; I hope her other two brothers are somewhere safe.

Chick three fledged but couldn't get back to the nestledge and dribbled down to the ground.  Picked him up and returned him to the nestledge but not before his sister made her first flight - and a very nice flight it was, maintained her altitude, made a bit up at the end but didn't quite manage to reach the ledge she wanted to land on.  Instead she landed on a wide ledge about 3 feet below without a problem.  When she screws up the courage to try again, and if she does as well then as she did the first time, she'll be back on the nestledge in no time flat.  And her brother (fledge #3) is waiting patiently for her - these two are very much best buds.

Our three chicks have returned - I say three because the chick that fledged first has yet to return so far as we can tell, but sometimes it is hard to see the tape on their bands.  And it is not unusual for one chick to just take off - Hurricane and Alley were like that and they did fine.

So, our lone female who fledged just as I was putting chick 3 back on the roof took all day but it wasn't the time, it was the incentive.  Joli and a very plump dinner item was the real reason she came home.  She's wanted to for much of the day but it has been too high and she hadn't figured out yet that she just needs to circle round and that would get her up there.  So it looks like Joli used the food as a very effective lure and our girl was not graceful but she stuck the landing like a pro - and then she scarfed all the food and would not share with her brothers.  She is still picking at the bones (there is absolutely nothing she hasn't eaten) and the boys are napping a few feet away.  All in all, a happy little picture and I suspect they will all stay together tonight - today's fledgers don't seem inclined to venture out again and fledger #2 very much prefers company.

The three Logan chicks (female & 2 males) are back again for the night.  Logan girls best brother is tucked up in a fledgling chick pile with her napping on the ledge.  Other brother is napping nearby sitting up.

Yes, they have.  For whatever reason I was really twitchy about publishing the names before they fledged - like it would jinx it or something.  Not sure why, maybe everything was going so well made me nervous.

Anywho, the Logan chicks are named in honour of Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday and the Duke of Edinburgh's 95th.  The chicks are Elizabeth (green tape), Philip (no tape/silver), Mountbatten (red) and Windsor (yellow).  Windsor was the first to fledge, Mountbatten the little charmer was the second and Elizabeth and Philip have been pretty much inseparable - he even came back at night to sleep with her right until her last day on the nestledge.  Haven't seen much of Windsor since he fledged, but Mountbatten kept coming back to visit (and for a meal).

Classy names! :)

That's so sweet to hear how Elizabeth and Philip have been sticking together. I hope they stay that way for a while ...

Finally I've caught a bird on camera at Logan.  Bird was by the nestbox preening but they were twisting so much that it looked more like Hart than Joli.  Then s/he was in the nestbox looking just as distressed as Princess and Smiley at the state of the box - but their box is much smaller so it isn't actually as bad just more locally concentrated.  Anywho bird hooped out of the box to preen again on a different perch and I though maybe I saw a flash of pink on the leg and which goes with my overall impression that it is Joli even though I couldn't really see her speckles - maybe the light or the fluffed up feathers while grooming ... I really need to get name tags for these birds for when the light sucks in the late afternoon!!!

Colour band is on the wrong hand for it to be Hart ... So had to be Joli but her silver band just was the right colour ....  Will have to do some snooping on the recorder in case she's been around at other times today ...

Had a long look back through the recordings and had a very early morning visit by a bird with a black head and very nice broad white breast - Ty and Hart are our only boys with that and Ty doesn't seem to stray from West Winnipeg and this bird looked particularly familiar and comfortable where he was, so it it was anyone it would have been Hart.

Joli was around yesterday at an odd hour of the afternoon (odd for her at least) doing a lot of preening by the nestbox.  Couldn't read her band number but her coloured band is on the opposite leg from Hart's.
