: The Peregrine Chick March 11, 2017, 23:43
And we are up and running ... first bird spotted at a nestbox this year at 1445h today ...

... from what I could see of his band, I think it was Hart - looked like him too.  Last year he arrived after Princess and Smiley were back at the Radisson and he hung at West Winnipeg until Faith arrived and then there was a bunch of canoodling before he was "escorted" out by Ty and he went back to Logan to be with Joli.

First birds last year were Princess and Smiley at the Radisson on March 10th.  Same first bird back date the previous year.  In 2014 however, first bird didn't arrive until March 23rd and Hart wasn't back until April 2nd.

Wonderful!!  I was wondering if anyone had come home yet given the strange weather and other nests laying early this year.

I await Princess, will she come back this year...I hope so!  :-*

the Hotel had some interlopers today.  Dennis and I were there to add some new gravel to the nestbox - we'd taken most the gravel out last year and decided to hold off replacing it last fall because it would be frozen solid at this time of the year and given that Smiley is a rather poor scrape maker, we thought we'd wait until spring (aka now) and add new, dry, unfrozen gravel so that if Smiley returned (never a given any bird will return) that he would perhaps have an easier time of making a scrape and if Princess returned, that she would choose the nestbox over the nestledge ... she hasn't been there for a while so anything that helps keep her in the box is a good thing.  Knock on wood she returns and chooses the nestbox.  But we weren't the only interlopers, looks like we have two more birds in town - both look to be females. One I will definitely need to read the band number on, there are more than a couple of possibilities.  The other one, I'm pretty sure I know who it is but I'd like love to get a second look ... perhaps tomorrow she'll still be around and cooperative.  Oh, and the male that has been around since last Saturday is definitely Hart.  What I can say is that Princess is definitely not home yet but it is early days yet, this is about when our birds start to return and with the warmer weather over the next two weeks we have more returnees very soon ...

Bird is sitting on the east side Hydro sign in the morning sun.  Too far away to say who it might be.  Know that a bird has been in/out of the box a couple of times this morning and though it is probably Hart but if new birds are starting to arrive, I'm going to hedge my bets when I can't actually read the band and say that it looks very much like Hart  ;)

I was downtown for the Jets game last night.
Some very dark birdie was sitting on the nesting box for a good 1/2 hour around 6:00.
Then a little while later he/she was sitting on the southeast corner of the hydro building
overlooking the construction site.
The construction crew at True North were still working - could almost see birdie saying,
"so what are you guys up to now?
Welcome home!!!!!!!!!!

Saw a bird sitting on the west nest at 7:10pm last night - and again at 9:40am this morning. - Whoever this is - they seem to have taken a liking to our prime spot!  ;) - Where are you Princess?  8)
: Re: Radisson - 2017 / Pip & Princess
: The Peregrine Chick March 22, 2017, 13:11
Princess is definitely not in town and we haven't seen hide nor hair of Smiley either.

Hart and Joli are the pair making themselves at home at the Radisson over the last few days.  Joli seems to have driven out another bird that we are 99% sure is Spencer out of the territory on the weekend.  Didn't seem to be much of a fuss over that, the bird we are pretty sure was Spencer was at the Radisson and then an hour later, it was Joli.  Better part of valour on we-believe-Spencer's part given that Hart is around to back Joli up, not that Joli needs much backing up.  Joli proved that just before lunch when into town flew Faith and she made a beeline for the Radisson nestbox and she and Joli had a no-holds-barred knock-down, drag-out fight - actually 3 fights in the nestbox and who knows what kind of aerial combat.  Both seemed to be without obvious injury after their last round in the nestbox - no blood that I could see on feet, feathers or faces so hopefully it was more sound and fury than injurious.  Both birds have flown off - Joli has been back a couple of times so who knows.  Faith and Joli are very equally-matched, can't say it will be the last fight over the nestbox between these two.

This is the kind of spring excitement I could do without ....

: The Peregrine Chick March 22, 2017, 13:36
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C7iuTegVwAAJBMm.jpg)

Both of these females are large and unwilling to back down without a fight.  Lots of foot holding, a bit of biting on the beaks, yelling and posturing but neither looked to have blood on them when the last fight ended.  Both birds seem to have flown away without any trouble.  Joli has been back to the box a couple of times and looked okay.  Princess had a hum-dinger of a fight a few years ago and she looked injured but was able to fly and after a couple of days of resting at and in the nestbox (without disturbance) she was right as rain.  Both Joli and Faith are younger so I think they should be fine.

And yes, we have let the rehab organizations know that the birds are back in town and to let us know if they receive any peregrines.
And yes, we are keeping a close eye on all our cameras to see who turns up where and how they look.

Oh wow, it sounds like Hart & Joli have staked their claim. - First time Princess isn't the obvious resident at the Radisson.  :( - I hate to think what might happen if she shows up now - Yikes.  :o - Fingers crossed all goes well all around!!!  8)

I don't think anyone will concede to anyone if Princess turns up ... at this point I think the Hotel is Joli's.  As for what would/will happen if/when Princess arrives home, well, she has held this territory for 12 years and it isn't the first time she's had pretenders to her throne ... we'll just have to see.

It was a serious territorial conflict but for a talons-on fight still looked relatively civilized compared to others I've seen.  That could be good for all the birds involved - or will be involved ...

Wow, these are exciting times!  I'm glad it appears both birds are ok.  I am wondering why all the birds see the Radisson as the best spot?  It appears to consistently be the first place everyone goes to.

I hope that everything can be settled at this nest without injury to anyone. I also hope that Princess returns soon, before either Joli or Faith gets the idea that the nest is theirs. Each of them has a nest of their own to return to.

Come home, Princess!

Territory has everything they need - food nearby, a nestsite, perching places, places to cache food and places to defend the nestsite from.  This was the first site to be occupied in 1988 and it has been occupied ever since - even when every other nestsite was empty, this site will have a bird at/on it during the nesting season.
: Re: Radisson - 2017 / Pip & Princess
: newchick March 22, 2017, 15:39
Maybe because the Radisson was their original nesting grounds for most involved, or it's the highest, easiest to spot.  I hope Princess and Smiley are just delayed, and will figure out where they will nest if they do return.  It's very early in the season, and the veterans, maybe waiting for warmer weather.

Whatever the outcome, hopefully there isn't to much ruffling of feathers to cause intervention of the Rehab centre.

This was posted yesterday by the Midwest Peregrine Society.

35 Years 's Success!

Today's highlight is celebrating Canada's contribution to peregrine recovery in the Upper Midwest. Since peregrines are such "wanderers", it shouldn't surprise anyone that Canadian birds may head south, in addition to US birds heading north.

Manitoba started releasing peregrines in 1981, and over the next 28 years, over 200 falcons were released to restore the population in the area. The Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project (http://www.species-at-risk.mb.ca/pefa/p-recovery.html) works with many agencies to monitor and band peregrines in the Province.

Finally, in 1989, Manitoba had their first successful fledging occur at the Delta Winnipeg Hotel (now the Radisson Hotel Skyline) in downtown Winnipeg. This nesting was the first recorded nesting in Manitoba in over 50 years, something to truly celebrate. Another interesting fact is that the female that nested here was "Maud", the first successful fledge in the Midwest since 1964!

Make sure to follow the recovery efforts at the link below. Thank you Tracy and everyone who works for and supports peregrines in Manitoba. GREAT JOB and continue the work!

Faith came back for another close look at the Radisson nestbox.  She was alone in the box but there were a bunch of very fast fly-bys.  She looked fine and she was fairly obliging in that she stood in front of he camera long enough to get a good look at her.  Now feathers can hide a multitude of sins but she looked and acted none the worse for wear a few hours after her wrestling match with Joli in he nestbox earlier.

: Re: Radisson - 2017 / Pip & Princess

Faith has decided she REALLY REALLY wants the Radisson nestbox.  Hart hopped in there a while back and then in she popped and they yammered and beaked each other (maybe courting maybe not) right at the back of the box.  Neither gave an inch.  Then he left and she has parted her but with her back to the Radisson wall in the outside part of the nestbox.  She is staking her claim and she's found a spot where she's got a good solid support behind her if Joli returns to press the issue.  So far all quiet ... Joli's been hanging out at the Logan site and by her nestbox there this morning so who knows ...

Was just looking out an office window. From a higher floor on Broadway I can see the top of the Radisson and the next box, although it's kinda far away. :-\
I saw 3 birds zooming around the skies above and around the Radisson. - Soaring, darting, swooping, up and down. They seem to be sticking to that area so I'm wondering if there's a territorial battle going on.  ??? - I hope not, and it's too far away to see the birds clearly. Maybe TPC has eyes on it.  8)

Thank you for all the updates regarding our peregrines as they return, TPC.

I'm happy to hear that Joli has moved along (at least for now) and I hope that Joli and Faith are both OK. It's still early in the season though and things may change once more males arrive!

If Princess should return I certainly don't want her to be faced with a territorial fight; however, I'm doubtful she would be willing to settle for any site other than the one she has owned for so many years.

: Re: Radisson - 2017 / Pip & Princess
: The Peregrine Chick March 25, 2017, 13:46
Okay, long post here.

On Wednesday (the 22nd) Faith and Joli had a series of knock-down, drag-out (almost literally) fights in the Radisson nestbox.  Since then there haven't been anymore fights on-camera at any of the nestsites we are monitoring.  Yesterday (24th) Joli was hanging out at her nestbox at Logan much more regularly.  And as Dupre & Cooper have reported Faith had been in West Winnipeg since the Thursday but it wasn't until this morning (Saturday) that she actually turned up on-camera at the nestbox.

So why the detail about Joli and Faith comings and goings?  Well at noon on Thursday a bird made a very brief visit to the Radisson nestbox and though I can't be sure until it lets me read its band, my feeling is that it is Princess.  So am I breaking my own rule about IDing birds without a band number? Sort of but I hope not really.  Folks are concerned about Faith and Joli fighting and what would happen to the much older Princess when/if she returns, so in the interest of helping folks feel a bit less concerned, I am reporting we have another bird in town and although I'm not sure it is Princess, the bird looks to have the right band combinations on the correct legs and the facial/body markings look right (when it lets me see him/her).  Add to that the behaviour of this new bird - hanging out on the Hydro B (Faith, Joli & Hart haven't done that this year), the JR sign (no one has done that but her), lunching on the east side ledge and hanging out on the west side Radisson sign. And Princess has always been the hardest bird to get a band number on camera - usually we have to rely on Dennis to charm her long enough to get her band number.  Add on top of all that that Faith and Joli have gone back to their own territories - neither one had shown any interest in their own boxes before the 23rd and since then they have both spend hours hanging out there.  Remember, females fight females so though Hart is a trooper, he really isn't any real help during a fight between females in a nestbox.

We have seen Hart and Faith and Joli and they are all fine, no limping or signs of distress so I am confident that they are doing fine after the dust-up on the Wednesday.  As for the bird I think, might just be Princess at the Radisson, bird is totally serene and unperturbed.  If I am right and it is Princess, sure shows you that there is more to holding a territory than being the first bird home, or be willing to fight.  Sometimes you just need to turn up.

So until we can confirm this new bird's identity, yes, I think, it could, just might, possibly be Princess. And folks can stop being concerned that the fighting over the Radisson will get worse ... it looks like Faith and Joli have retired to their respective corners and the Radisson is currently conflict-free.
: Re: Radisson - 2017 / Pip & Princess
: bev. March 25, 2017, 14:49

I hope it is, I hope it is, I hope it is, Princess!

A little off topic, but it is still from the Radisson

looking west from the Radisson                                               looking down at the east-side Radisson sign "off"

kind of ironic - rest of their building is totally dark though!)

This is a cross-board post that I will post on all three Wpg boards ...

We definitely have females at all three Winnipeg nestsites.  I was able to confirm that at the same time, Joli was at Logan, Faith was at West Winnipeg and a male (Hart confirmed) and "the female we suspect may be Princess" were at the Radisson.

Hopefully with the south winds yesterday some additional males will turn up as it appears that Hart is trying to do "husbandly" duties himeself - have seen him bowing and displaying with Joli and Princess in the last day and I'm pretty sure Faith was yakking at him from her nestbox not an hour ago.  Not sure Princess wasn't giving him a lecture this morning but Joli was definitely willing to succumb to his worldly wiles and Faith I think is just so darn eager to get going on things that she's not being particularly discriminating ...  ;D

And Hart has a spectacular scrape in the nestbox and Princess took food from him yesterday ... not sure how interested she was in him as a mate (I don't believe we have seen any hankie-pankie between these two), tug-o-war for meal and then she chewed on his toes like she wanted him to leave the box edge ... will try to find some time to download the video.

Hart is spending a lot of time with Princess at the Radisson.  Today they were in/out of the nestbox pretty much every hour.  Not sure if she's fully invested in him but she's never really chased him off so hard to tell if she's being tolerant or interested.  He's got a very nice scrape going though and Princess has been adding some touches over the last few days so who knows.  Upside is that she doesn't seem repelled by the nestbox, downside is that Hart is not spending time with Joli ... hopefully Smiley or someone will turn up and encourage Hart to go home ...

Title of this stream needs to change, n'est-ce pas?  Now that we know who Princess' new beau is :)

This new look will take a wee bit of getting used to, but I'm so glad our community of phanatics is back!

Thanks TPC and Dennis for making it happen!

Does everyone have a black screen?

At home the screen works right away - but at work, the screen is black. - After trying a few things, this worked for me.
'Right Click' on the black screen  - left click on 'Encoding'  - then left click to deselect 'Unicode' - Voila, the screen comes up.
Give it a try.  ;D

I can watch the site but I do not have audio either.  I'm not sure if we are supposed to have audio or not.  Maybe TPC can answer that one.  I am just so happy to have the Forum and the web cam up and running - audio or not.  :D

I seem to be having a feeling of deja vu. Although I am able to view the cam/Princess, I have no sound. This was an issue last year. I could not view until I downloaded Google Chrome. I am still on GC with no problem except the sound.  IE for me needs to be updated through our computer tech. Princess is basking in the sun/shade.  :)
: Re: Radisson - 2017 / Pip & Princess
: The Peregrine Chick May 13, 2017, 21:33
We are working on the sound but may not be available as we are using YouTube Live to host the cam this year.  Advantage is that the streaming is much more solid than in the last few years and YouTube is viewable on pretty much every platform. Shaw and I are still  on a bit of a learning curve with the new software - and we are still working on the sound.
: Re: Radisson - 2017 / Pip & Princess
: susha May 13, 2017, 22:29
Thanks TPC!  I just wanted to make sure the problem was not with my computer.  I love being able to see the birds and can live without sound.  If I want to hear the kakking and chupping that I love, I can watch another cam with sound ;)

Thanks for all the work you and Dennis do to keep us connected to each other and informed about the birds  :-*

She's been interesting to watch this year - she's been happy to get all the way inside, get all arranged (takes her less time to do that than some of the newbies) and then immediately goes to sleep.  She is so much more relaxed it seems to me this year.  Maybe it is age or maybe some zen is what Pip is bringing to their personality as a pair.  Will be interesting to see how it goes when the eggs hatch.

Has Pip been doing much egg-sitting?

Pip so far is doing great!  He hopped on the eggs shortly after incubation started like he'd been doing it for years.  And he's been doing 1/4 to 1/3 of the incubating since then. He reminded me of Beatrix her first year nesting - they both make it look easy - will be interesting to see how he does when the eggs hatch.

I've spoken before about how each bird has its own personality but that each pair has a personality as well? Well it seems like this year's pair at the Radisson is very laid back.  Given that this is Pip's first year nesting, I honestly thought Princess would be a bit more possessive of egg time and that he'd be a bit more of a rookie.  So far, it doesn't look like either is the case and the pair of them together is like a smooth oiled machine.  Makes me think of her partnership with Trey a bit.  Really looking forward to seeing how many eggs hatch and how Pip does as a dad, not only with the chick-rearing but the hunting as well.  And if he is a neat-freak like Trey, he's definitely a keeper!!
: Re: Radisson - 2017 / Pip & Princess
: ballywing May 19, 2017, 11:09
Oh yes hopefully Pip is neater than Smiley was!  :P - Maybe Princess is gladly accepting the help as she gets on in years and less energetic? . 'Been there, done that' so many times now that she's not so fussy any more.  ;D

Looking forward to seeing the fluffies appear in a week or so!!  8)

(Sure would be great to know what happened to Ivy - and Smiley - they just don't show up and our reliable Princess has to do 'Musical Chairs' with her baby daddies.)  ;D ???

It is has been weird having the camera on for so long ahead of the hatching ... so quiet on the forum, so quiet on the camera for so long ... I honestly didn't think I'd notice any difference because we've been watching the birds for a couple of months now but it really does.  So Pip is not the only creature of habit it seems ...  ::)

Last few quiet days for Princess and Pip - we think hatching should begin Sunday/Monday if Logan's 33 day incubation is a good indicator - only time will tell.  I'm very much looking forward to seeing what these two are like as parents.  It would be nice for Princess to have a really competent (or quick learning) mate at her age - will help make all the work so much easier!!

They both should be the same.  We are using YouTube Live this year so you can watch it on YouTube directly.  The view on the Shaw FalconCam webpage is just the YouTube Live video embedded into the webpage.

She's been spinning this morning which she wasn't doing yesterday.  Now it is just wait and see if/how many hatch out.

Checked the recorder and not quite yet Bally - the wet chick you saw was chick number two drying out.  They are pink when they first come out of the shell and take an hour or more to dry out to fuzzy white.  Other two eggs - white and brown - were still under her on her spin about 1020h.

Bally, I worry too, each year it seems like someone is not getting fed. But, I have noticed over time that they all thrive. Princess is very good at this. Plus, I think tpc once mentioned that peregrines are very good at feeding everyone. It isn't a competition for survival of the fittest as in some species.

As of 1100h CDT, still 2 chicks and 2 eggs.  Watching how quiet Princess is this year, if she only had two chicks to take care of this year, I'd be happy.  Four is always fun, but these are her 39th and 40th chicks, she deserves to have a easy summer and Pip seems to be helping with that ... or at least he's made a good start.

I have often wondered if you have encountered a white egg prior to this egg. As they say about chicken eggs, white eggs...white chickens, brown eggs...brown chickens. LOL! Of course red/brown PF eggs.............. ;D

Maybe - the winter was hard on it so it hasn't been working but if we can repair it during banding we will.

Yes Princess is probably the most experienced peregrine Mom ever!! ( if I find something to worry about I will do it....lol....)  :D - I was saying to my sister this morning that I don't think we've ever had a chick die of neglect - or for that matter, by being stepped on - as I'm sure Princess tromped on the little one while picking up the room service yesterday -  :-\.....as I said, I always find stuff to worry about. ... ;D ;D (And I just saw another feeding 1/2 hour ago, the little one got one teeny morsel and that's it .)  :-\ - Maybe I should stop looking. ... :P

Can't say for sure, I have thought I've seen pips in both eggs, but they could be stuff stuck to the eggs or just a darker marking on the egg that is showing particularly well.  Only time will tell I'm afraid.

Check out the smallest/youngest Logan chick (4 days younger than its oldest sibling) in the photo I just posted there - kid has a crop so full it would choke one of us!!  Food doesn't seem to be his/her biggest problem - s/he keeps getting mistaken for a pillow by his/her sibs!!

Yes heat is a problem for them and yes, the Radisson nestbox gets the sun in the afternoon.  But they should be fine though for a number of reasons

As for dehydration - the chicks get all their moisture from the food they eat, so as long as they keep getting fed they should be fine.

Having said all of that - they are still small so there is plenty of room (even with the eggs) under Princess or Pip to keep to stay in the shade so it will be easier than if they were a week older ...

Dennis, Eye-Spy and I were off working behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly - means didn't get to spend time checking the cams.
All the chicks are fine, weather was great - sunny, warm, enough clouds to keep from being too hot - great for the chicks and the adults alike.  It was basically a day of eating and sleeping!  And the chicks are rockstars at both!

It is a week since first hatch (May 30th) and 3 days since last hatch and Princess has been letting Pip come in and hang with the kids for longer periods of time, so I'm inclined to think the last egg won't hatch - Princess had only 3 last year too - not bad for a Grand Dame of her age.

Princess hatched in 2002 in Minneapolis - she nested for the first time here at the Radisson in 2004 with Trey.  So she is 15 years old and this is her 14th year nesting here.  Bonus factoid - she's had 4 mates = Trey, Ivy, Smiley & now Pip.

One of the chicks looks in distress   ??? - I may be wrong but it looks like he's breathing funny, keeps coughing or burping, like he's trying to gag something up - and there looks like something sticking out of his stomach - My sister thinks a feather tip stuck into him. (Rewound to approx. 4:55pm and watched for several minutes. )
She saw one of the chicks swallow and choke on a full feather earlier today and gag it up, then swallow it again, maybe it's stuck in his throat.  - Are we just paranoid TPC or is he acting strange?  ::) :P
: Re: Radisson - 2017 / Pip & Princess
: The Peregrine Chick June 13, 2017, 21:22
All the chicks do that "gagging" behaviour - it can be that they ate a lot or they are attempting to yak up a pellet - as they get older more indigestible material gets into their diet - which sounds like a bad thing but yakking up a pellet is a kind of self-cleaning system from the stomach up.

Our PVR at the Radisson has finally given up the ghost so I'm afraid I can't go back and check recordings I'm afraid. Will keep an eye on them and see what I can see ...
: Re: Radisson - 2017 / Pip & Princess
: The Peregrine Chick June 13, 2017, 22:11
Just ran back the couple of hours that the webcam buffers and the chicks looked fine - napping and hanging out with one of the adults (not sure who it was because of the light) and didn't see anything that causes me immediate concern.  None of the chicks were "gagging" and I couldn't see anything on any of the chicks that looks like it doesn't belong but they keep dropping back to sleep which is probably a good sign.

I should mention that I see the same behaviour with chicks in all the nests I have cameras on and I assume on any other nests we don't know about and probably in the McKenzie Seeds nest when the chick is older.  I think we don't have anything to worry about but I will check periodically tomorrow ....

Looks like we will be banding these tots sometime in the next week - should have a date for you in a day or two.

We are having problems with our recorder which affects more than just our recordings so while Eye-Spy is working on the tech, I am making no guarantees that we'll be able to stream it live but we are working very hard to get there!!  More news on that later too.

And yes, we will be having a "Name the Chick" contest again this year!!  More news on that after the banding when we know what mix of genders we've got.

Any news on whether we'll get the 'Outdoor Terrace' view this year?  ??? ;D

That's the plan but it is tied to the repairs on the recorder - without the recorder we can't remotely access the cameras at the nestbox - the sky-cam and the balcony-cam for sure - the ledge-cam will need to be replaced so likely not as we can't do work on it while the chicks are in the box for chick-safety reasons.  If we cant get the ledge cam to work we'll try to keep track of the with the skycam if we can ...

It's fun watching the chicks as they are starting to get more active now, but still so fluffy and cute!  I was wondering TPC do you notice a difference in banding when you have an experienced mother like Princess?  I mean are they calmer than the newer mothers, because they know what you are doing will not hurt their chicks or do they still tend to get really upset?

It's NUTS how fast they grow.  :o - Starting to show their feathers too - soon all the white fluffy stuff will be gone. I sometimes wonder if it hurts to grow that fast. ...lol... ;D

I watched the chicknapping as well.  Saw their new bling when they were returned, and boy were they screaming.  I, too, think it is 2 females and 1 male.  TPC should let us know soon.

Hey Folks - busy day today so apologies for being late reporting.  Yes today was banding day at the Radisson , the youngest chick was 22 days old so old enough to get his bling -and yes the smallest one is a male, the other 2 females.  Princess was In fine form and interesting Pip was off hunting or some such and arrived late - bit like his dad Hart - but when he did arrive he was immediately trying to comfort Princess which was sweet and in character from what I've seen.  Chicks were all great - one female likes to bite and all three have very fast feet - good reflexes in a peregrine. And the little boy is definitely isn't losing out to his sisters at mealtime so no worries there.

Dennis has only just started on his photos so should have one or two shortly to share and the rest will be available on his blog/gallery soon enough. 😊

Thanks TPC for your update. Another biter???? Hope you kept your thumbs tucked in! Thought I would check in to see the little Royals. Princess nearly blocks the view after bringing in pre-breakfast. Great to see the chicks "cutting" up their own meal and feeding themselves. However :'(, ones thoughts go to the time left to watch their journey to fledging. Looking forward to banding photos, Dennis!  ;D

These chicks are growing and developing faster than I, for one, want to see. I am now watching them wingercising. Too soon. When you chicknapped them yesterday for banding, did Eye Spy have a chance to check the cameras for our patio and promenade viewing? ???

We are working on the skycam - the camera itself is fine but YouTube Live is having some trouble streaming the signal smoothly.  As for the one down at the end of the ledge, Eye-Spy is trying to source a replacement camera and if we can replace for this year we will, otherwise it will be something to look forward to next year!

We are working on it.  The skycam works great problem is when it talks to YouTube it won't stream without stuttering.  We've worked our way through most of the "easy" things to try to fix it, now we are into some of the more labour intensive ones but we are working on it and hope to have something very soon!!

In the meantime, will post photos here as often as I can

So sad to see chicks appear to be gasping. Temps now at 31C/87F and they are now getting the West sun. I know we see this annually, but I for one wish they had an AC. The forecast for tonight partly cloudy. 30 percent chance of showers late this evening and overnight with risk of a thunderstorm. Low 15.  :(

The chicks are fine - they aren't gasping, they are panting - other than their feet, that is the only place that birds have direct skin to air contact.  That's also why they lie belly down on the gravel when it is in the shade, it is cooler and the pebbles can get through their feathers next to their skin.

As for A/C at the nestbox, that would not be a good thing.  Part of what makes AC work is the passage of air over water that is constantly being cooled - in a space like a nestbox in hot weather there would be a build up of moisture/condensation and that would potentiall make a nestbox full of chick poop and dead birdie parts a soup for all sorts of pathogens which would not be good for the birds.  So the chicks follow the shade around the nestbox and nap - they are much more active early in the morning and evening/night when it is cooler.

And storms don't seem to phase peregrines - Hurricane in Brandon got her name because she and her siblings sat on the edge of the Radisson nestbox and watched the t-storms that birthed the Eli tornado.  And at this age, they like to dance in the rain - if it does rain this evening/tonight and if there is enough light I'll see if I can get a screen capture of them dance if they do.

This is, I think, the first time I've seen them on the box edge ... will check the recorder later today if I can to verify ...

Actually  :) Squeak is the Winnipeg (Logan) mom of the chick that ran into trouble from the Bell Tower in Edmonton.  Squeak is Pip's sister.  So many adults and chicks to keep track of now - hard to complain about that though  ;D

Thanks for the view, Eye-Spy!  Do you have a EDF (estimated date of fledge), TPC?

Technically they are all old enough to fledge anytime ... they are 36-40 days old.  I suspect that it won't be for another few days at least, maybe as long as next weekend.  No one seems to be in a big rush this year - the Logan chicks were very late, even the male and the West Winnipeg chicks may be on the wall today but they haven't seemed much interested in jumping quite yet.  Today was the first day all three Radisson chicks were up on the box edge and they haven't figured out they can run down the ledge, but hey, the days not done yet ....

Sorry folks, was working and couldn't get back to switch the cam for you earlier ...

And we've had an accidental fledge of at least one, but I suspect two of the chicks ... one has been picked up and I'm off to rehab with it, the other hopefully is higher but don't know where at the moment.

More news as I have it ...

Yup accidental fledge - little brother and one of the sisters - little brother was found on the ground and we got him off to rehab.  So far looks fine but holding him overnight to make sure.  Technically he's old enough to fledge and he isn't big so despite the white fuzzy feathers on him, this was kind of normal.  No news on the sister yet, we'll look for her again via camera at first light and have alerted all the rehab facilities that fledging season has begun!

No news yet on the other sister that fledged - have checked all the nearby buildings but can't see anything.  Will keep checking through the day - sometimes as the light changes the chick will become visible.

As of fledge time yesterday, little brother was 36 days old and older sister was 40 days old.  That is the start time for fledging so the have the wings to be able to do, they just may not have been ready.

More news as I have it.

Princess and Pip don't have any problem finding their kids when they call.  This is sort of standard.  It may not have been a graceful fledge but when they go, they go and then it is mostly up to Mom, Dad and the chick in question.  We really can't do much more than try to rescue them if they get into trouble but even then, sometimes there is nothing we can do, sometimes they don't really need our help - one of the Logan chicks provided that this year!!

When the chicks fledge, Princess and Pip will keep track of them, will feed them, will taunt them into following them and defend them if the chick is in trouble AND they can do it without injuring themselves.  Only takes the chicks a few days to get the basics of flying worked out and after about two weeks we generally don't have to worry about them as much.  Another month, six weeks after that the chicks will start taking trips out of town or across the country on their own.  So not much more time to watch them on-camera ...

How's the little brother, TPC?

A quick look at him last night didn't show any obvious injuries but I asked for him to be held overnight just to make sure all was good.  So long as he is fine later today I'll put him back in the box tomorrow morning - hopefully without scaring his sister too too much ...

I haven't see the adults at all but that isn't unusual - they tend to fly outside of camera range unless they are coming the nestbox.  It is warm outside, so I suspect everyone has found a perch to wait until it is cooler.  That is what they tend to do at least.  Chick might make her way back up to the nestbox this evening or tomorrow if she is okay and so inclined.  She's out there on her own which is, funnily enough, just as boring as hanging out in the nestbox of chicks.  No reports yet today but if I hear anything or see anything on camera, will post here.

TPC, I remember a few years back when a fledgling got stuck in a (chimney?) and was heard by workers.  Luckily she/he was saved.  Is that place still a hazard or has it been taken care for for our fledglings.

Just curious. :-\

Nothing has been done at the site - but it isn't a common occurrence - it has happened twice in 35 years - first time the chimney was still in operation - no it didn't get toasted, the chimney was for heating so turned off and cleaned in the summer - the second time was with Beatrix a few days after she fledged.  I send an email around to folks who have had contacts with the peregrines in the past when they start fledging so they can check places like that - so far no reports.

A more fascinating one was the chick that got caught in a paint booth exhaust (about 18 inches wide) on the top of the old Eaton's building (now MTS Centre). The paint booth wasn't used any more but an employee on the floor below heard something odd and called us.  We went to check the roof and couldn't find anything.  Then just as we were leaving we walk past this exhaust (we had no idea what it was) we heard a little scratching.  No idea how the bird got in there but it did.  Heck can't even remember who that was now or who I was with but I seem to remember another set of hands ... going to have to do a little research now ....

I don't know. Either one fledgling was returned to the nest,  or one made it back on their own. The one at the top of the image is the one who was not there earlier. He/she was not visible for long; I think he/she went into the nest, since the other chick was looking in that direction.

Hopefully TPC will have an update soon. I hope the missing girl is safe somewhere.

I'm sure you're right, Ballywing, that the male is the one who has been returned to the nest. When I see him side by side with his sister, he is quite a bit smaller.

They have both been dancing on the edge of the balcony.

As you can see, little brother is back home in the nestbox.  We were hoping the rain would keep her glued to the nestbox even when we got close and the parents started freaking out.  No rain but she didn't do anything foolish and we were very quick and minimalist in returning him to the nestbox.  It was all over in about 12 seconds.

And yes, the other sister is fine.  Dennis found her on his way to the Radisson as I was coming in with little brother.  She's next door, many storeys above the street and it appears no worse for wear and in no immediate or particular danger.

Remember, no news is good news :)  The no news on other sister was definitely good news!!

You had other access problems with Firefox ... I think it might be your settings ... I run Firefox on all my computers (new and old operating software) and don't have a problem with photos here ... Nope, other sister fledged late yesterday - that is little brother, he's been up and down the ledge by the nestbox and I think he may well have voluntarily fledged as well, but can't be sure as if he did, he did it off camera!  We'll see what he gets up to over the rest of the day.  And the accidentally fledged sister has found somewhere new to perch - can't find her on the building she was sticking to now.

I've got the skycam keeping an eye on the ledge, the balcony cam watching the balcony and the inside box came, well watching the inside of the box - theoretically if someone comes or goes we should see it!!

So other sister has fledged. I hope she is safe, wherever she is. In fact, I hope all three are safe. If lilttle brother fledged, it is very recent, since the image I posted was from about five minutes earlier. You have an advantage, TPC, with three cams, while the rest of us can only view one.

We aren't sure - the angle of his take off from the nestbox could have been either, but he was back on the ledge very quickly - which could mean he took an abrupt turn back or he flew to the ledge right off the bat.  I'm trying to put together the different camera angles to answer that question though ....

Watching the Radisson webcam on shaw channel 9 every day for 2 hours since the chicks were tiny (3 hours on Saturday and Sunday).  What a beautiful experience!  Sometimes it was hard to watch Peewee aka (Lost) being shoved out of the feeding line.  Nature has its way, survival of the fittest.
Now Peewee looks weak and seems to have having difficulty flying like his sisters.  He's alone most of the time, at least from the perspective of the shaw webcam.  Any one who knows more, please post it.  Thanks.
I guess my motherly instincts popped out again.  I even dreamed last night about a songbird chick in a nest, which was a hole in the grass.  An elementary school full of children were in my backyard learning about life.  I guess these little Peregrine Falcons and  their very busy mom got to my heart.  🐣🐣 🐣  God go with you little ones

It can be tough to know what's going on the first year you watch the peregrines and watching on Shaw TV you have a great view but it is only just at one time of the day so you have only seen one part of their lives.  The good news is that all the chicks at the Radisson are doing very well and in fact are doing as well as their brothers and sisters in previous years and are no different from their cousins around the province (we watch over them as well).  Little brother, the last chick at the nestbox is 4 almost 5 days younger than his sisters which is why he hasn't fledge (taken his first flight yet) - getting bumped off (or being the bumpee) also may make him a little less impatient to get flying.  He ended up fluttering down 30 storeys to the ground when he accidentally fledge, then he was rescued, transported, checked out for injuries, had a sleep-over, transported again and then was returned to the nestbox - all things he wasn't thrilled about so if he takes a bit more time to want to fly again, that's fine - he's getting stronger and braver everyday.  His sister who also fledged accidentally with him spent four days hanging out by herself on a nearby rooftop out of sight of the nestbox before she tried flying again and we found her up with her sister across the street from the nestbox on Saturday.  He on the other hand had his other sister with him until just a couple of days ago and he can see his parents and sisters most of the time, he just doesn't want to fly yet. And that's up to him - every peregrine has their own personality and he'll go when he doesn't want to be alone anymore - they all do eventually.  And the parents will keep him and his sisters fed wherever they may be, then they will start tempting their chicks to follow them for the food so that they can start to teach them to chase prey and hunt.  The chicks really like this stage of training!!

And don't worry about little brother's health, he's not weak at all (I have the cuts to prove it!) - it is warm in the nestbox at this time of the year so he likes to find the shade in the box or out on the balcony or on the ledge (which is out of camera view).  And the peregrines like most predators (and our companion cats and dogs) spend a large part of every day napping both as chicks and as adults - so he's doing just what everyone else is doing.  Occasionally you will see him with his wings drooping after a big flap on the edge of the nestbox - that's because he's still building up his wing strength and that's tough work for a chick that is only 43 days old.

So nothing to be worried about at this point, little brother is doing what we expect, just taking a little extra time and when you consider how small he was when he hatched, a little extra time is perfectly understandable.  We've had chicks stay longer and some who didn't wait at all, every chick is different.

And if you haven't, please do vote for your favourite names for the chicks - maybe that will encourage him to fly  ;)

As an update - Little Brother fledged at 1206h CDT - went back to check the recorder - pretty good launch too and he made a wide sweeping turn around to the north and disappeared around the Hotel and maintained good altitude from what I saw.

Will see what I can see on the cameras!

Thank you Old Bird, all the information you gave and reassurances put a smile on my face!  My little Peewee (younger brother) is ok!  The smile turned into a big grin with your news today that he fledged!  ;D
I've been trying for years to follow Princess and Piper but the internet had problems.  I just stumbled across shaw ch.  9 about 4 or 5 days after all the chicks were bornthis spring.  I was very excited and so was my cat. Ha ha.
I voted for the names, although I can't say I particularly like the possibilities.  I just love the falcons, names aren't that important.  I think I'll always call the little brother Peewee, I've always called him that name.

Got a call that little brother grounded himself again - took 8 hours to do it though, which I think is better than last time!  He's had a checkup and everything seems fine but he's staying overnight again with PWRC just to be sure (we did the same thing last time).  So long as all is good, we'll get him back up to the nest box and perhaps the third time (knock on wood) will be the charm.  So far so good.

Not everyone likes the names we propose which is fine and often folks refer to them privately by nicknames.  We do have a couple of rules we try to live by - we give them names like Crash or Splat because 5 to 7 out of every 10 chicks dies in the first year of life and that's just bad karma.  We also don't go the Fluffy or Sweetie-Pie route - hard to take a peregrine seriously when he or she is named Fluffy.  We also try not to duplicate names already in the Project - for most our birds we don't know who's still alive and going to pop up someday, so we play it safe that way.  And finally, we are superstitious on two points - first, we don't name them after living people, we've not had good luck with that one in the past and second, we name them as though they will survive and return and be one of our resident birds - like Ty, Hart, Pip, Hurricane, Sol, Sundance, Spencer, Loki, Daer, Elizabeth, Bristol and Beatrix - who all came home this year.  Other Manitoba birds nesting elsewhere this year include Alley, Terminator, Radisson, Annie, Andamooka and Chaos. In case Nature appreciates a well-named peregrine, we plan to keep giving them names they can survive and thrive on - and with a little help from the falcons' fans for the Radisson chicks.

I'm putting together a list of the orevious years' Radisson chicks' names and where they came from - will be sure to post a link here when its ready.

TPC..... Who calls you TPC when birdies are grounded? - Where was 'Brother' found? - If any random person comes across  a big unfamiliar bird on the ground, how do they know what to do? - I'd think alot of people would just look and continue on. - Just curious :)  - I don't even know who to contact if I'm ever the one who finds a chick -  ie phone numbers etc.  ???

With the advent of smartphones folks google us and our phone number is on the website - just as a note, the number has changed this year.  Or they google injured wildlife and get one of the rehab organizations and their websites and answering machine messages provide them with information on local drop off locations - some of which are open during working hours, others 24/7.

Sometimes they get the phone number from the Hotel or 311 or the Winnipeg Police.  In last night's case, none of these three sources managed to find our new number - and yes we give them this information for just this kind of eventuality.

Sometimes folks call the City or Province who then forward them on to the Humane Society or one of our wildlife rehab organizations.  Wildlife Haven and Prairie Wildlife usually give me a call if a peregrine comes through their door or there is a report that sounds like it could be a peregrine (rather than a merlin or some other raptor species).

Last night is was a bit of everything since more than one person was calling.  I got the call through Prairie Wildlife as it was late (almost 10pm) and I was nearer than any of their volunteers.  WHS Emergency also turned up which was cool.  Not a lot of folks available on a weekend - pretty much just us. :)

Ideally I'd like to get little brother (it will be nice when he has a name) back up in the nestbox tonight so he can calm down and think about what he wants to do instead of rushing to do it just because he's so glad to be away from us.  But we'll see how it goes ...

I have some interesting information on one of the people that you chose for one of the chick names. The doctor that Jean Ann Purdie was married to delivered my mother at her home which was not far from Griswold. Then their son who was also a doctor (Dr. F.J E.Purdie) delivered me and my two brothers. So who should I vote for...I may be biased!  ;D

Jean Ann Purdie (1883-1991) –  nurse, doctor’s wife.
Born at Edinburgh, Scotland on 18 April 1893, she came to western Manitoba with her family in 1910, when she was 17 years of age. She took nursing training at Neepawa, graduating in 1914, after which she worked at the Brandon Mental Health Centre. On 16 July 1918, she married Dr. F. K. Purdie and the pair moved to Griswold to practice medicine. The Spanish Influenza hit Griswold in 1918 and the Griswold School was turned into a hospital to accommodate the many patients. For three weeks she nursed the patients, then went on to Alexander to help set up an emergency hospital there. During the epidemic, she helped to treat 200 people, only two of which died.
for more information: MHS’ Memorable Manitobans – JA Purdie

Mrs Purdie was a tough lady – a great quality in a peregrine! Also, the Brandon Mental Health Centre used to be a favourite place for non-nesting peregrines to hang out during migration and occasionally through the summer if they were in the mood to stay.

Sorry to hear little brother took revenge on your arm today, TPC. He must have been quite frightened after a couple experiences on the ground!

Your latest tweet said he was back in the box but I'm not seeing any sign of him - unless he's tucked in already - so I'm thinking he might have left shortly after you put him back.

I sure hope poor little brother isn't in trouble somewhere ... I'm worried.  :(

Dennis and I put little brother back into the nestbox this evening in the hope that he would just cool his jets overnight (and maybe tomorrow too?) before trying his hand at flying a third time.  He has done well so far to be grounded twice from 30 storeys without an injury, but he doesn't need to prove to us he can do it a third time (right?).  We'll have to see if all he's waiting for is dawn or if he decides to take a couple of days - maybe until the weekend when its quieter downtown even - before trying his wings again.

Nope you aren't dreaming mspeach - your memory is quite correct.  We have had informal flrdgewatches in years gone by - they differed from the flrledgewatches we had many years ago in hat folks would come down when they could as opposed to two people working. 6 hour shifts from dawn until dark.  That's more time than folks can generally donate and because of the tall buildings it is hard to keep a constant watch on the birds.  Our mr informal fledgewatches were as much to appreciate the birds as to help them if the chicks run into trouble.  The Project has over the last number of years has worked to modify nestsites to give chicks more opportunity to practice flying before taking the big leap and that seems (knock on wood) to be helping - for instance putting the chicks on the rooftop nestbox rather than the box on the wall at McKenzie Seeds - doesn't make it as easy to see them from the ground but fledging injury and mortality has gone down. Same with Ramos from box to roof at a couple of sites - even though the chicks can get up on he roof he inevitably go down onto the roof and then spend the next 2-3 weeks running and flapping and taking short flights across the roof - all in preparation for the big leap.  Accidents will still happen and some birds just need more chances to get it right but overall we are (knock on wood again) doing so very badly these days.  The chance to get together and talk peregrines when fledgewatches was a great part of the events - and you are right, the sharing of sightings and tales was great fun.  I had to go back and count but those fledgewatches started 9 years ago - a number of our original phanatics have retired, moved etc - they still drop I. To see what is going on and a number of folks keep an eye on the twitter feed to get updates as well.  I guess the upshot is that things, except for the peregrines, change and we adapt.

Nice to have you back for a visit MsPeach  :D

They might come back once or twice but the FalconCam won't be live all summer and Shaw TV won't show an empty nestbox for the next couple of months either.   We monitor the cameras year-round, so if someone pops up we'll probably catch a glimpse of them and if we can catch a decent photo we'll be sure to post it no worries.

It's a world of laughter, a world of tears
It's a world of hopes and a world of fears
There's so much that we share
That it's time we're aware
It's a small world after all

It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small, small world

There is just one moon and one golden sun
And a smile means friendship to everyone
Though the mountains divide
And the oceans are wide
It's a small world after all

It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small, small world

Just putting some thoughts out there.  :)

Watching peregrine falcons on live cams is educational for humans so naming a chick in honour of an educator may be a way for us to express gratitude to the peregrines; considering that, I think it would be nice to name our male in honour of Wilfred Gilbert Pearce, educator.

Pearce rhymes with pierce and our cute “little terror” has been known to pierce skin (in his defence against humans), so the name Pearce would again be fitting for this youngster (in my opinion). And of course I’m hoping he will live a long life as a fierce and powerful adult peregrine.

You get three choices but once you vote you can not go back and change them - you have another day to make your final choices, so you have a bit longer to take the leap!

Oh no, they aren't ready to support themselves yet.  They may just be starting to catch things on their own, but not enough or well enough to support themselves - they are still growing babies still - they are only 57, 56 and 53 days old as of today.  They will need another few weeks before they are fully self-sufficient.

A couple days ago my sister was waiting for a bus on Portage across from the Radisson.

She saw 1 of the kids soaring around, then it landed on a window ledge at the Radisson. Then another kid came and landed on another ledge.

Then 2 more birds came - not sure if it was it was Princess and Pip, or the other sibling and 1 parent - but there ensued a lot of screeching and yelling for a minute..... Then the 2 kids flew off the ledges and went with the other 2.

I'm guessing they were in the middle of a training exercise and the kids were goofing off so got an earful.  ??? :P ;D

TPC have you seen all 3 of the chicks? - Do we know they're all ok?  :)

Love the pics you posted, TPC! Very handsome fledglings!

It's good that they have names now. Thank you for all the thought, research, time and effort you put into coming up with a selection of names, and the background behind each.

Have not seen anyone at the nest, except for a couple of partial views of a juvie a couple of days ago.

Yes, they are! I was doing a cursory check of the nest, where no-one ever seems to visit, when I saw a beak peeking  out from below the overhang. The beak disappeared immediately, but then the juvie did make a short appearance.

Chick "band" (actually tape) colours this year are:
Porter - is silver - no tape on left leg(all our males were silver this year)
Purdy - green tape on left leg
Pippy - red tape on left leg

We don't really expect the tape to last longer than a few months, so if you see a bird with no tape, likely it is one of the males but maybe, just maybe, one of the girls may have removed the tape already.

I find the tape colours serve an excellent purpose, though not for long. Initially, I couldn't find leg band info for the chicks, but thought I should at least ask about the band colours tape colours - sorry about the poor wording.

Past the first year, having colour on the silver band doesn't really serve a purpose.  When they are chicks and based on where they are seen we can tell with a certain level of confidence who a bird might be - so a chick at the Radisson nestbox in July is likely (99%) the red Radisson chick.  In September a chick with red tape could be any of this year's red taped chicks because the chicks are travelling further away and returning irregularly.  A bird next spring with red tape on its leg will have adult plumage and could be any of the red taped chicks from the last 10 years - or could e a bird from any other project that also uses tape to mark their birds, and many do.  So, the tape works well because it sticks long enough to help us through fledging and usually through until the chicks migrate.  After that reading the leg band is best for the ID.

I wasn't really sure where to post this...I'm not from the Winnipeg area, so I'm not overly familiar with downtown Winnipeg.  I know that we don't have any control and urbanization will continue, but does the construction of True North Square cause concern for future Radisson Peregrines?

True North Centre - no - it is a number of blocks away and south and west of the Radisson.  By the time it is built it may in fact become one of our (not counting our chicks before they are laid mind you) chicks' favourite spots to hang out post-fledge.  From what I have been able to visualize of the skyline of the project and its position, (knock on wood) by the time the chicks can fly up to rooftops, this one will be about the same distance away as the Delta Hotel which for the last few years has been a favourite place to play.

Closer to the Radisson is a new development that we are watching with more interest.  Actually there are two developments at the moment, one 8 storeys, the other 30 storeys.  The 8 storey development is where the Regis Hotel & its parking lot are now (https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/local/st-regis-hotel-to-close-next-month-ending-107-year-run-422456543.html).  The 30 storey development is SkyCity (http://skycitywinnipeg.ca/#top)  is just south of there - the old post office parking lot - so northeast(ish) corner of Graham and Smith.  Now we are continuing to try and keep the peregrines from nesting on the east side of the building so it may be a moot point until the chicks are fledging and if/when they fly around to the Hotel.  Or maybe it won't be much of nothing - like the Glasshouse (http://glasshousewinnipeg.com/) and Alt Hotel (http://www.althotels.com/en/winnipeg/services/) on the west side of the Hotel and north side of Portage.

Fortunately the west side of the Radisson is pretty user friendly for the peregrines - the Hydro building is a couple of blocks away and (knock on wood) yet to cause a fatality.  The MTS Centre, Eaton Place, the Somerset Building, the old Woolworth's store, Met Entertainment Venue, Centennial Library, old Winnipeg Free Press building, Air Canada Building as well as the Dollarama & MEC buildings are all lower with large flat roofs for landings.  The Rogers Building, Glasshouse and Alt Hotel are used regularly by the chicks in the first week after fledging and the adults use the Alt Hotel sign as a perch during big storms during the nesting season.  All of which, so far, has been pretty good for our peregrines - knock on wood (and anything else you like in addition) it will stay that way.

(and yes, when it comes to tempting the fates, I will knock on wood whenever and however many times it takes to not cosmically-influence the peregrines' safety  :o)

Yes it is Pip still hanging out in downtown Winnipeg.

Haven't seen Princess or for sure Faith in the last couple of days but we think one or both are still around.  Pip was kakking at someone just before he departed the sign, going to assume it was one of the girls but I couldn't find them wherever they were.

Pip has moved over and is sitting on the north side Rogers sign - out of the wind there as it is on the east side of the Radisson.  He doesn't seem to hang out on the Hydro sign much which is interesting - his grandfather Ivy was a big fan of the Hydro building sign.  So too was Smiley.

Nice to know some are sticking around , as long as they don't wait toooo long to flee to the warm south!  8)

So would I!!! Bird looks like our rockstar Trey perched there - hoping it is one of his kids or grandkids.

Running out of time before the little darlings bolt for good, but maybe with some nice weather today he'll put in another appearance and will be willing to "show me some leg"  ;D

Just the thought that one of Trey's offspring would be the birdie in the photo would be amazing.  ;D

I've been thinking about our peregrines and hoping they are all somewhere warm and cozy. :)  We're having a cold spell here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and tonight it is expected to be -35°C with an extreme wind chill of minus 44!
