Nope, no one home quite yet, but won't be long - "early" birds usually turn up between the 12th and 18th. No idea with the crazy weather this year when the kids will be home!

Thanks to Eye-spy and Dennis we have cams up and running at the Radisson as of this weekend. And I'm going to check the recorder and see if I can get a peek at the band. Do know already it has a black bottom - question is is it a full black band or a bicolored band with black on the bottom. Bird looks very comfy at the Radisson so I think it is one ours - who may take a bit of time to find out.
Will post a photo from the cam .a bit later

I read about the unbanded male on the PWRC Facebook page and pray for complete recovery and is able to be rereleased. Is he a subadult, TPC? Dennis?

We will have to see if Hart gets "pushed" out or becomes the new Radisson male. If he gets pushed, hopefully Ella won't interfere with his love life again this year!!

No, he is an adult male - looks very much like Trey, Hart, Pip ... given our family tree here in the province, it is very possible he is one of the family but one we couldn't band for one reason or another over the last few years. ;D

We've had a couple - Joli's nest we had to dig out because Hart was totally buried under the snow with just a little airhole to breath through.
Years before that, Princess and Trey had a nest on the east side of the Radisson that during an icestorm had them and the ledge totally encased in ice.
Tough little birds these.

The cams are running just fine here 😁
Shaw will be partnering with us again this year but we still have a couple of weeks until we go live. Looks like hatch won't be until the Victoria Day weekend so we have a ways to go yet.

There is a fourth ... but with the cooler weather we haven't gotten much of a look at it!
I'm combing through the recordings to find a shift-change where the eggs are more visible - I'm sure I'll find something, Ella and Pip usually change over relatively frequently. With the new camera the image should be great but it has a different viewing angle so I'm getting used to how Ella & Pip come and go ...

How is the incubating going? All covered, all the time?
Was downtown today, just before 10 am, on the fifth floor across Portage from the Radisson. Would have had a great view, if there would have been a bird visible on the edge of the nestbox.
But I thought I saw 3 peregrines flying just a bit south. Two looked to be dodging and diving each other with the 3rd watching from higher up. Anyway, that is what it looked like.

It has been a terrifyingly busy IRL (in good ways) over the past 10-12 days! Fortunately absolutely nothing but napping peregrines in the nestbox. 😁 Better now than in a couple/three weeks when we are on the verge of hatches!&
And FalconCam prep is almost done - we have one more thing to test and we'll be able to announce the launch date! And no worries, there will be plenty of time to get thoroughly bored watching paint dry.

Plus having an Supervisor (Pip) show up ensuring everything was being done properly.

It is much cooler today than it has been recently and it rained like gangbusters overnight (you can see the drip line on the gravel if you look close). That would be enough for these two to be velcro'ed to the eggs! Don't know what her/their usual incubation timing is - Madame used to be very precise but I had years to watch her do her thing. Ella not so much.

Funny thing this morning. At 0500h Pip comes in with food, the chicks weren't particularly interested in the food so Ella eats a bit and then stuffs it, the chicks and the eggs under her and goes back to napping. An hour later, Pip arrives with more food, she grabs the food and leaves, he picks up the food she had tucked under her and which the chicks have been cuddling and leaves. She then comes back with the first food delivery I believe (didn't look the second one) and proceeds to feed the chicks. Do we think Pip pulled something out of the fridge and she decided it needed to thaw out a bit before feeding it to the kids? Mom Microwave? Anywho, both chicks got feed and dropped off to sleep while she ate the rest. Wind doesn't look quite so bad (so far) in the nestbox which might make for a bit less cold day for everyone in the box. Likely won't get many looks at the kids - quick mealtimes then everyone back under the parental duvet unit on duty.

Since Ella has laid her eggs, they have never ever left the eggs unattended. I was hoping for all the eggs to hatch, but it appears only the 2 will be our chickpile this season. Now hoping for successful fledges.

Radisson - for anyone still wondering about the two unhatched eggs .... this is not unusual for Ella, and interestingly not for her mother Hurricane either. Ella's 1st year, 1 out of 4 eggs hatched, next year 3 of 4, last year, 2 of 4 and this year, 2 of 4 again.
Hurricane and her mates had 30 chicks fledge over the 12 years she nested here at the McKenzie building and she certainly contributed to the peregrine population. :) In 2009 the first year she nested here they had four chicks who all fledged. Also, Ella had three siblings and they all fledged. I think she did very well here! :-*

Ah, now this is where the question of what metric should be used to gauge "success". First is to define "success". From a species population perspective, a bird is successful if its offspring have offspring that fledge. Makes sense, that's the passing along of genetics to another generation but it doesn't consider the challenges individual birds/pairs face each year. On the other hand, looking on an annual basis, a bird that comes back, finds a mate, defends a nestsite and raises any number of chicks and migrates out is a success - but it is a more personal success for the bird.
I like both because they look at different things. The Project works to support the annual success in the hope that it translates into success at the species population level.
As RCF says, Hurricane was the resident female in Brandon for 12 years, had four mates and fledge out 30 young, an impressive personal accomplishment for any bird.
Here's how the McKenzie Seeds females stack up against each other - and I'm adding Ella in for comparison. These numbers are averaged over the number of years the individual females nested.
Note: for comparison, the average number of young (fledges) per successful pair in the US Midwest is 2.9.

* we stopped banding at McKenzie Seeds in 2017 so we can't be positive of the number of birds that survived to migrate, but we didn't have any unbanded birds reported injured/dead in western Manitoba that might be one of the McKenzie Seeds chicks.
** it is early days for any of Ella's kids to return to nest somewhere, so this number will hopefully change as time goes along
Sorry - missed explaining that a "survivor" is a chick that fledges and that doesn't die before December the year it hatches. In this case I am assuming that a chick is alive unless we know it has died. "Returned to nest" is only the birds we know about, could be higher - this is the passing down of genetics part.

Checked from 5th floor on Broadway and can see 2 of them - presumably Pip & Ella - swooping & circling near the nest box. ;D - Can't wait to see if boy/girl and hopefully change the cam view so we can see them outside - Have fun with the Banding TPC! :D

Banding went very smoothly - was a bit worried we wouldn't be able to get the chicks, they do like the balcony do these two! Chicks were on the balcony when we arrived, then Ella came in with some food and we needed to wait until the snack was over. Then one chick was outside and the other chick was half-in and half-out. So we came out on the roof and let Pip find us, then Ella in the hope that their parents' protests would push the kids inside and it worked - or rather worked just enough for us to scoop up the outermost chick before it knew what was going on. All was pretty standard after that :) We have put red tape on the male chick's band so he should be easy to spot as they continue to grow.
As for the camera, yes, we are working to switch over today - or rather tonight. With the new setup for Shaw, I can't do the switch but Eye-Spy can. Unfortunately he couldn't join us for the banding (day job and all that) to make the switch over while we were there. Instead he's going to work on it this evening.

Usually hot weather keeps them in the box - more active in the mornings/nightime when its cooler but they won't fledge at night so if they are going to fledge during this hot spell, best to keep an eye on them in the morning :)
Neither seems to be getting itchy feet so to speak. And I don't think Luke will go before Leia is ready or almost ready, these two seem to not be in a hurry. They flap but I haven't seen the frantic, almost lift off flapping yet. Or maybe I've just missed them ...?

A lot sure has happened. I went into the hospital with pneumonia, when they freshly hatched, to come out and see they are close to fledging. ;D :D :o

Opened up the cam this morning to see.....nobody. :( - Went backwards about 4 1/2 hours and managed to see somebirdie fledge!! - Looked like a good strong takeoff, and I think the other one had already gone - no sign of either of them now. :) - Hope all is well for Luke & Leia!! 8) :-*

Not quite a fledge, rather Luke taking a big leap down the ledge. He did it well though especially because he hasn't been running around outside the box for more than a day and a night! Was able to see where he landed with one of the other cams. He took a few steps after landing and I lost sight of him when it looked like he went through the opening in the louvres near the end of the ledge (there are two on this ledge - one just a foot from the nestbox and the other down near the south end of the ledge). There are openings in the louvres on all four sides so they can pick and choose where they want to spend their time!

When you were panning the camera I noticed when you went by the Roger's building it looked like there may have been birds on the R and S. The shape looks like a falcon laying down. It looked like the one on the R moved position as in sitting up and then it lay back down. ??? :-X :-\ Then again this could be the way the signs letters look normally. ???

They look a bit like that but they are much too small - Pip has liked to cache food there in the past so I suspect that's what they are ... would love to know what they are but can't get close enough to get a clear image. When the chicks were young he only brought really small prey for Ella to feed to the chicks ...

This morning I could see a falcon (bright white front) perched on the nest box with my long lenses camera. Last evening I thought there was one perched but had it's back to me. I also saw a falcon chasing pigeons and it looked brown like a chick. :)

Bright white breast will be Pip - Ella has too many speckles too high to show as noticeably white at a distance! And it was likely Pip on the box too, haven't seen Ella on the box for at least a month and he's been there much more regularly. And you are very likely right about the chick - hadn't seen the chicks on camera and then in the last few days I've seen one - can't say it's just one still around just that I have only seen one at a time!
Best time to spot them and where:
- West side Radisson nestbox & west side sign - morning while box is on the shade and evenings when the heat of the sun is "off" so after the dinner hour usually - almost always Pip these days
- On the Alt Hotel sign (east side of building) - when the sign is in the shade - could be any of the birds, they all use it
- East side Radisson nestbox & sign - (like everywhere else) when it is in the shade, so noon on - hunting usually - Pip has started tempting Ella to the ledge again to check out his post-nesting season scrapes - she mostly just takes his food ... maybe next month she check out his hard work! - if you have your camera - this ledge really is just like photographing at McKenzie Seeds!
