Peregrine Falcons make their public debut

It was a special day at the Pulliam Power Plant in Green Bay as the Peregrine Falcons made their public debut.  Stormfeather, Hiccup, and Pulliam Pigeon Patrol Pete met the students who came up with their clever names.  The birds live in a nexting box at the top of the plant. Today they banded and had a blood test in order to find out where these protected birds flock to during their lives.

There is a very short video of the banding with the article:  http://www.wfrv.com/news/local/94547059.html

Thanks, Alison!  :) The reason I have been asking about names lately is that I have decided to make myself up a chart to try to keep some of the nest sites straight in my head and to begin to make connections between some of the nestsites (ie. how some of the peregrines are related). I find it to be quite a daunting job, keeping all of the information straight, in my head! :o

Mom and the chicks:

Kinderchick, you asked if the parents have names. I don't have absolute confirmation that they are the same two adults as last year, but if they are, the female is Beth, banded black/green 25/B, from the Midwest Generation Power Plant in Waugekan, Illinois, born in 2003. This will be at least her fifth year here.

The male is banded black/green, 45/H, from Grand Haven, Michigan, born in 2001. This will be at least his fourth year at this site. I don't believe he has a name.

The three chicks at the Pulliam nest have now received their names:

Peregrine falcon chicks at WPS power plant in Green Bay are named

Three elementary students were named winners of the peregrine falcon naming contest sponsored by Wisconsin Public Service and the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Kasey Richert, a fourth-grader at Holy Cross School, chose the name Stormfeather.
  • Casey Jepson, a first-grader at Hemlock Creek Elementary School, picked the name Hiccup.
  • Alyse Cherveny, a fourth-grader at Pilgrim Lutheran School, chose the name Pulliam Pigeon Patrol Pete.
The chicks are the latest to be hatched in the nest box built in 1995 on the roof of the WPS Pulliam Plant.
