Here is a summary of the steps ....

1.  Go to page in your Flickr account with the photo you wish to upload.
2.  Above the photo, there is an email icon (an envelope) and a Facebook icon and a Twitter icon - just beside the Twitter icon, there is a downward pointing arrow - click on that arrow
3.  The pop-up menu that appears, click on the downward arrow beside Grab the HTML/BBCode
4.  Click on the radio button (round button) beside BBCode
5.  Copy all the coding that appears in the box
6.  Paste that code in the reply textbox on the Forum thread where you want to post your photo

Remember, post one or your best photo on the Forum in order to reduce the number of times the Forum has to access your gallery to display your photo - each time it does that, it costs the Project some money.  At the moment we are fine, but the more photos we have, the more of our reserve we use up.

So, just display one or two photos and then let folks visit your gallery on Flickr to view more/the rest.  The Flickr code we have just used to display your photo here contains a link directly to your gallery, all folks have to do is click on your photo.

One of the advantages of having folks come to visit your gallery, they can leave comments.  From someone who leaves comments on photographers' websites, this really is the best way to leave a message about a photo you enjoy and as a photographer who has received complimentary comments, its a great way to collect kudos and answer questions.  If you want to see what I mean, check out Dennis' gallery at (www.pbase.com/photosbydennis).

That is true TPC, I try to weed out the spammer's

Check to see what Flickr has in place to protect from spammers (which are usually automated responses).  Flamers (folks who are being purposefully mean/cruel) are different and they can be members or non-members.

What you might have is the ability to review (some call it "moderate") comments made - that is you see them before they are posted - if they aren't offensive you approve them and they get posted to your gallery, those you don't approve are deleted without them ever seeing the light of day ....

Just wanted you to know photobucket is in maintenance mode until around midnight.  ::)
As I said last night, I registered an account with Photobucket last evening but could not upload any photos to my photo gallery, so now I know why. ::) Will try again maybe tomorrow evening and then will likely have questions about Photobucket on Thursday evening.

... If you don't have an account and don't want to get one, try leaving a comment, if you can't, no harm done.
Well, I tried to leave a comment in eagle's photo gallery but could not because I don't have an account. So I guess that answers my question.

I believe that is the default that Flickr applies so that it can get more folks to sign up.  I believe that anyone can set it so anyone can post, it's just that the account holder needs to go in and actually click the button for it.

For some folks, they don't really care about comments OR they get lots of spam or crank comments when anyone can post a comment so they leave it on a members-only setting just to weed some of those folks out.

Here's the link for the Getty Images information ... Eagle because you have an account, if you are signed in and then click on the links in the text, I believe it will take you to more detailed information.
http://www.flickr.com/help/gettyimages/

Here is the link to more general information on things you can do ...
http://www.flickr.com/help/faq/

Don't get twitched by the amount of information here, just decide what you want to look for and then look to answer one question at a time ... like how you can set up your gallery to accept comments, and then just read up on that one item.  When you have that solved, ask your next question.  If you try to read through it all, its abit overwhelming (for everyone!!! this is what I do)

Really? How on earth can I do that, TPC?

One the right side of your photo, a bit further down the page, there is a copyright line ... in your profile area (I believe) you can decide on what level of copyright you want to apply to your photo or photos.

Give me a sec and I'll find the FAQ on Getty Images ...

Great idea, TPC! :) Question then, does an individual who is viewing someone else's photo gallery need to register in that person's photo gallery to leave a comment about their photos?

One of the settings folks can set in their profile is who can post comments - For Flicker I believe there are three levels - anybody, folks who have a Yahoo or Facebook account or no one at all.  If you don't have an account and don't want to get one, try leaving a comment, if you can't, no harm done.

I agree with you about people wanting to share their photos. I have been looking for a place that is free cause I can't afford to pay for a site.  I always sign my photos makes a bit of a deterient for people want to claim and theirs.

Flickr also has a licencing levels which makes it illegal for folks to use your photos anywhere.  They have partnered with Getty Images who are pitbulls when there are copyright violations.  You can even set it up to make money if you want.

We'll do the same kind of thing with Photobucket (and any others) on Thursday evening.

And I'm going to use Dennis' gallery as an excellent example of what can be done with really very little extra effort.

And why shouldn't folks showcase photos they have taken - someone has taken the time to take the photo and would like to share it, so why not do it up right.  Since folks have to have a gallery of their own to post photos here, why not take full advantage of the services they are providing you!

The advantage is that folks can showcase lots more photos on their galleries than I can support here and folks who want to say "thank you" or ask questions more questions (or kudos) about the photos can do it on the photographer's gallery instead of a couple here where no one will see them.

If you want to know what I mean, visit Dennis' galleries (www.pbase.com/photosbydennis) and you will see that folks posts comments all the time!

What we are going to be asking folks to do is set up galleries in their Flickr or Photobucket or PBase or whatever photo-sharing service they use and then post ONE photo here with a link to the rest of the photos in the gallery.

That means that there is one photo for my system to post as opposed to 20 photos

AND it means folks who want the words, not all the photos don't have to scroll through so many pages on threads to catch up on what the birds are up to ...

You do not have to use the little photo/image button you just need to paste the BBCode you copied from Flickr

Okay, now look right above your photo ... there is a little envelope, then the facebook icon and then the twitter icon then a little downward pointing arrow ....

click on the downward pointing arrow ...

\okay so what am I doing wrong?

You just haven't copied the correct code ... once you know where it is it will be a simple copy and paste, trust me.

So, have you got a second window open with your Flickr gallery?

Flickr has set up a system where you can't just use the URL at the top of their page ... they have set it up so you have to specifically go for the information ...

Now I'm going to use the photo or image code to insert a photo.  What you need to do is click on the "quote" button just to the right of this text and then read the rest of my message.  The photo/image code won't appear when the message is posted because it posts the photo instead ..

What I did was push the button and this is what appeared
<-- this is the image code, it tells the forum that the link is to a photo

Then I copied the url address from the photo I wanted to post (more on where to find that next) and I put it between the photo/image code

By putting the address between the photo/image code, it tells the forum to show it as an image

Then this part is easy ...

When you type your reply to this message, look at all the buttons above the text box.  One line has formatting information - Bold, Italics, Underline etc - the next line is for adding photos and links to websites and the like.  The second button from the left is a square which is suppose to be an image of a photo, meaning that is the button to push if you want to add a photo to your post.

Take a look and see if you can see what I'm talking about ...

Tutorial 2 - Flickr

Hey all, Larry was driving so I did get to my front door at 8:30 and then straight to the computer :)

Happy to talk with anyone about this now or we can wait for Thursday.  Today's roadtrip wasn't planned until yesterday and we left this morning expecting to get back for 6-6:30.  Took a bit longer in the end - the wind didn't help us much.

On Thursday, I have nothing planned so I will log in earlier and stay online as long as folks have questions to ask about posting photos et al ...
