Logan - 2011 / Cowboy & Kate
« on: April 19, 2011, 10:56 »

The birdies(whoever they are)  are hanging around HSC again this morning... Both birdies were on the usual letter at 7:00 this morning for about an hour.

And somebirdie(the male by size???) was sitting on the the HSC smoke stack wiring about 10 min ago, but he/she flew off to the west.

Hmmm, according the cam, Ivy and Princess weren't far from the nest for long between 0600 and 0800 so think this was probably Beau and Jules a-wandering ... they did this same thing last year during courtship ...

Making lots of noise, but I only saw the one bird.

1435 hrs

Dennis was at HSC watching who he is pretty sure (without binocs or camera) are Beau and Jules playing around on-the-wing.  Down onto their favourite building then off and up and away and around and back then way-way up high and then out-of-sight.

I checked the cam at the Radisson while I was chatting and Princess was in the midst of trying to shove Egg & Eggette underneath her and from the way she keep alerting to something outside the box, pretty sure Ivy was not far away.

Dennis and I spent the last couple of days chasing the West Winnipeg peregrines and trying to confirm whether or not they are ones being seen so regularly at HSC.  They do get wanderlust during courtship but its been bugging us.  But we couldn't come up with a reason for the WW birds not to be in WW unless they were at HSC.  We have one now.  We have a new pair in town.  Meet Cowboy and Kate.  Cowboy is a 2000 wild-hatch from Brandon who was last seen in 2002.  Kate (or rather Katherine) is a 2005 wild-hatch from Fargo and there have been no reports of her since she fledged.  We have no idea if this is their first year together or if this is just their first year together here.

For two peregrines "in love", these two are very quiet and secretive which is behaviour I have observed in the past when a pair has nested in the Radisson territory.  We don't know where/if these two will nest but we be keeping an eye on them and if we can help them out to make nesting this close to the Radisson a little less stressful, then we will try.  But it will depend on the birds and where/if they decide to nest.

More news as we have it.

Didn't Birdnut often see peregrines at the HSC last year?  Possible these 2 were there last year too, and you folks just thought it was one of the other 2 pair?

Nope, those where birds migrating through.  They were bandless and didn't stay to nest.  (good memory though)

Kate's family tree

proper/full name: Katherine
hatched from the First National Bank (now Bank of the West) in Fargo, North Dakota

parents are Dakota Ace (1997 Sioux Falls SD) and Frieda (2001 Dairlyand Coop Alma WI)
Dakota Ace was a captive-bred bird released and Frieda was a wild-hatched female.  Dakota Ace is still the resident male in Fargo.

Kate's siblings (known to have survived/nested) include: Holly (Brandon 204-08), Lewis (Minnesota 2005 & 2010),  Dakotah (Sartell, 2005-09), Bear (Grand Forks 2007-08) and Roosevelt (2009-10).

Interestingly - Kate and Cowboy share a common ancestor - MF-1 the famous Minneapolis resident female.  Maud our first resident female at the Radisson is one of MF-1's kids and it is through Maud's daughter Phoebe that Cowboy is related.  MF-1's son Malin is the father of Gamma is the father of Frieda who is Kate's mother.  So Cowboy is a Great Grandson of MF-1 and Kate is her 2nd Great-Granddaughter.
