Radisson - 2012 / Ivy & Princess
« on: January 20, 2012, 09:52 »
No sign of any peregrines yet, but when I had a peak through the video this last week, a pair of ravens turned up a couple of times to forage through the snow for the remains of the peregrines meals which are near the front of the nestbox.  It was very cute, and always at the same time of the day - about 0730h.

I lived in the Yukon for quite a while, and ravens were terrific to watch.  Very clever!  Once we watched two ravens distract our two dogs, while others grabbed a large bone  from the the dogsīpen!

Very cute, indeed!
They did seem to be a content pair, following each other around near the end of the video.
As long as this visiting adheres to time share rules, with no direct contact between seasonal guests, we can enjoy the ravens antics now.

Its also hard to know/tell if this is what they have always done in the peregrine off-season ... will be interesting to see what happens for sure.

Move it to the best place...I didn't want to look any farther.

If you don't receive the Winnipeg Free Press, thought I would pass along this link.
This is what is about to/taking place this winter/spring.
If you aren't familiar with Winnipeg, this development would start 1/2 block west and across Portage from the current West Side Nestbox...that is just a bit close...hope they (the birds) like cranes, jackhammers and what ever else is involved in this demolition and construction.

Oh boy.  I hope the birds can deal with the noise.  Hopefully, the nest box is high enough up that the construction sounds won't bother them... :P  They seem to tolerate the traffic noises, sirens, etc...

The peregrines didn't mind the Hydro construction but they nested on the nestledge when the MTS centre was being built, so not sure what will happen.  Ivy doesn't like the ledge much, not like Trey who hatched there, so perhaps he will just watch the construction and not be too twitched about it all.  Here's hoping at least.

Will also depend on what they are doing when in relation to the peregrine nesting cycle.  Once they are down on eggs, it usually takes alot to get them to move/abandon them!

TPC, do you think then, that Ivy has had more "say" in nest location than Princess?

With Trey, they (Princess and Trey) always spent alot of time on the east side of the building.  Ivy doesn't seem to hang out there much - top of the building and on the west are his sides.  As for who chooses, its the males who make most of the scrapes and then the women choose from among them.

T-Rex hatched in the box but nested at least once on the nestledge with Madame and that's where Trey hatched.
Trey dragged Madame there once in the two years he nested with her and then three times with Princess in six years they were together
Ivy has been with Princess for two years and they have used the nestbox both years

Of the 22 actual nestings at the Radisson, only 6 have been on the nestledge ...

It is great that Ivy is calm!
What a wealth of personalities you have described, TPC, among the males of the Radisson lineage.

our peregrines at the U of A. still nested and they where constructing right across from nest box for 5 years. Cranes etc. The fledges have to be careful with cranes, when they first fly but after they get going the cranes act a good place to roost.

Of course , we all hate the big building right in flight path of nest box, but try to watch fled lings.

Hope all goes well this year.
