And about your last question - these are the dates for this year's eggs ...

May 2 - egg 1 laid (camera not operating yet)
May 4 - egg 2 laid @ 1213h
May 5 - egg 2 damaged somehow and then was removed by Hurricane @ 1812h
May 6 - egg 3 laid@ 2027h
May 8 - incubation began
May 9 - egg 4 laid @ 0721h

June 4 - Day 27 - start of hatch watch
June 7 - Day 30 = estimated start of hatch

This is Brooklyn

Male peregrine falcons are a lot smaller than female peregrines which if you can see if you compare the photo of Brooklyn and Hurricane.  Brooklyn is unique among all our peregrines, he has the brightest white on his breast and cheek patches - they look almost neon!  At night when the light fades and you can't really see who is in the nestbox, if you can see white glowing dimly in the dark, then it's most likely Brooklyn.  If you compare the two photos you will also see that he has a very white cheek patch that is larger than Hurricanes and the black edge of his cheek patch is sharp and clear, no smudges.

Both Hurricane and Brooklyn have a black leg band on one leg and a silver legband on the other leg - I'll tell you more about leg bands when we band the Brandon chicks in late June.

Brooklyn was hatched at the McKenzie Seeds in 2007 so he and Hurricane are the same age.  His parents are Keener-Screech and Holly.
Brooklyn had three siblings - Lukas (m), Jackson (m) and Taylor (f).

Brooklyn spent 2009 hanging out near some wetlands not far from Brandon, then the next year, when Zeus didn't return, Brooklyn took over as Hurricane's mate and became resident male at McKenzie Seeds.  They have been together for 4 years including this year.  In 2010 Hurricane and Brooklyn raised two chicks, Mac (m) and Kenzie (f).  In 2011, Brooklyn and Hurricane both returned and they had two young, Rain (m) and Rosser (m) and in 2012, they had three chicks, Sol (m), Hunter (m) and Maya (f).

This is Hurricane.

Female peregrine falcons are bigger than male peregrines which is the easiest way to tell Hurricane and Brooklyn apart.  If you can't tell by size, Hurricane's cheek patch isn't as white or as big as Brooklyn's and the black at the top of the cheek patch looks like its smudged a bit.  She has lots of white on her breast but it isn't as white as Brooklyn's and the speckles on her belly are darker.

Hurricane was hatched at the Radisson Hotel in Winnipeg in 2007.  Her parents are Trey and Princess.
We named all the chicks that year after types of wind - Hurricane, Chinook, Taku and Mistral.

She was spotted in Grand Forks, North Dakota on her way to the McKenzie Seeds building in the spring of 2009.  When she arrived, she paired up with Zeus, the resident male when his former mate, Holly, didn't return. That is how she became the resident female at McKenzie Seeds.  Zeus and Hurricane raised four chicks - Fate (m), Luck (f), Karma (f) and Kismet (f).

The next year, Zeus didn't return and Brooklyn took over as Hurricane's mate and became resident male at McKenzie Seeds.

Greetings Grade 3 and welcome to the Classroom!

You wanted to know about Brooklyn and Hurricane and their eggs, well how about we start with the adults, I've got some great photos that will make it easier for you to be able to tell who's who in the nestbox.  It will be harder to tell the chicks apart when they hatch but at least you will be able to tell who is Mom and who is Dad.

Greetings from Grade 3!  We read that the ETH for the McKenzie seeds falcons was June 8th.  We will be watching!!  When were the eggs laid?  How many years have Brooklyn and Hurricane been nesting there?
