Caught on camera: Bald eagles return to nest at John Bunker Sands Wetland Center
by Mathew Richards / Inforney.com / 22 September 2015 22:03

KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A majestic sighting was caught on camera on Sunday evening — high above the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center in Seagoville, Texas.

A high definition camera on a tower within the man-made wetlands captured the moment a pair of nesting bald eagles returned to their perch where they will begin preparing their nest for new eaglets in 2016. In addition to the video capturing their return, seen below, the center also has live 24/7 video of the nest, including night vision.

“Keep in mind, the pair of eagles will not be sitting in their nest 24/7,” stated the center. “They will begin to prepare the nest for new eaglets in 2016.”

The pair returned on Sunday evening, according to the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center. The pair has been nesting in the wetlands since 2011 when their nest was spotted on a live high-voltage transmission line tower.

In 2014, the eagles’ original nest atop the transmission line tower was relocated to a safer, newly-constructed tower to primarily serve as their new nesting location — approximately 1,200 feet from its original location.

For more information on the eagles and live video of the nest, visit the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center website or Facebook Page.

The Wetland Eagles

Eagles have been nesting in the John Bunker Sands Wetlands since 2011 but in the summer of 2014, after the eaglets had left the nest, the nest was moved to a new location.  Because eagles add to their nest each year (until the tree or whatever finally breaks - their nests can get to be up to 1 ton in weight), this expanding nest was getting dangerously close to nearby high voltage wires.  So in July 2014, a group of individuals, local business, state and federal agencies relocated the 200lb nest and the metal "tower arm" where the nest was located to a new and higher tower built and donated by Falcon Steel in order to provide a safe new nesting location for the eagles.  On September 21st, 2015 the eagles returned to the nest to begin preparations for next year's nesting activities.
