n the 1950s, the peregrine falcon population plummeted. The species was placed on the endangered list as scientists bred peregrines in captivity and released them into wild areas. Some of these birds migrated to skyscrapers in eastern cities. As cliff dwellers, peregrine falcons flourished in urban settings, where tall buildings are plentiful. An abundance of pigeons and starlings supplied the falcons' diet. Biologists recognized this adaptation to city buildings and began releasing them on urban rooftops. In 1988, the Nebraska Peregrine Falcon Project released a pair of peregrine falcons atop the Woodmen Tower, which was the tallest building in downtown Omaha at the time.

Manitoba ConnectionsFrom 2012 to the present, the resident male has been
Mintaka (2010 Lincoln NE) wild-hatch. Mintaka is the son of Alley (2004 Radisson Hotel in Winnipeg) and 19K (2001 Des Moines Iowa). Mintaka has had, to-date three mates (in order) Hera, Charity and Chayton and has raised (so far) a total of 35 chicks.
From 1996-1999, the resident pair was Zeus (1994 Rochester NY) and
Winnie (1994 U of Manitoba in Winnipeg). Winnie laid a total of 18 eggs (4:4:5:5), all the eggs hatched and 11 survived past their first year. Of those 11, 4 have been resident birds in Minnesota, Missouri, Kansas and North Dakota. Winnie is a child of T-Rex and Burnsie. T-Rex was the resident male at the University and later the Radisson and is from the first wild nest in the province after our reintroduction efforts began in 1981. T-Rex was also the father of Trey.
