Brandon Babies
Got a report from Dan (even though he is on holidays!) on our peregrines on the McKenzie Seeds Building in downtown Brandon. There were four eggs laid by April 28th, but they didn't start hatching out until May 30th, a week later than we thought. Again, probably because of the cold wet weather we have had this spring. Anyway, there are currently three chicks in the box and one egg that didn't hatch (and won't now). Sound familiar? That's exactly what happened with Trey and Princess, four eggs, three hatched. All three of the Brandon chicks are doing well, their parents are using the nestbox on the McKenzie Seeds Building and are therefore a bit more protected from the foul weather. The McKenzie Seeds nestbox is higher than most/all the other buildings in the area, but they are actually at about the same height as the Radisson nest. Though more protected from the rain, Holly and Zeus have probably had to become very skilled at getting in and out of the nestbox with a head/cross wind. There is no ledge like there is at the Radisson, so their access is a bit more confined. But so far everyone is doing well. As of today, the Brandon chicks are the same age as the Radisson chicks when they were lost, so while the Brandon chicks aren't out of the woods yet, we are pretty confident that they will be fine where they are. We are currently arranging a date to band the chicks, probably around the 23rd of June. Will keep everyone updated.
