Species @ Risk
Wildlife management in Canada is shared by the federal and provincial/territorial governments. The federal wildlife agency is the Canadian Wildlife Service, a section of Environment Canada. They are responsible for the protection and management of migratory birds, endangered species, control of international trade in endangered species, research on national wildlife issues as well as nationally signficant wildlife habitat. Provincial and territorial wildlife agencies have authority for the management of biodiversity conservation, habitat and land management on Crown and private lands within their borders as well as the permitting and enforcement of angling, game hunting, trapping and outfitting resource activities.

The mandate of Manitoba Conservation's Wildlife & Ecosystem Protection Branch is to protect wildlife resources in a manner consistent with the conservation of species and ecosystems for the benefits of Manitobans. The Branch carries out its responsibilities under the authority of the province's Wildlife Act, Endangered Species Act and Conservation Agreements Act.
